Alle Links in den Shownotes. >> Black Country, New Road – Forever Howlong (Ninja Tune) Wir müssen reden. >> The Completers – The Completers (Yeah You!) Brasilianischer Post-Punk. >> Great Grandpa – Patience, Moonbeam (Run For Cover Records) Vom Schredder-Post-Rock zum schluffigen Country-Emo. When someone can cry because of a melody, there is something humane in them. If you are stressed, you can take this music like a tablet. It's music to cool down. It's not music for dancing, but maybe it can make you dream." 04:11 01:08:11   Opening background music: Unknown Artist, side A, Ambient Battle Samples: Phase One: Enter The Stargate Manifold...(2003    The Crypticon Media Cartel). Around 2010 I became somewhat obsessed with Japanese pop and ambient music of the 1980s - in particular the Yellow Magic Orchestra, the solo records of the members of the group: Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi and music by Akiko Yano, Yasuaki Shimizu and Hiroshi Yoshimura amongst many others. Last year I discovered that this was an enthusiasm shared with architectural historian, and very occasional pop music writer, Owen Hartherley who has since written an article partially on the topic: https://www.jencksfoundation.org/explore/text/japan-at-number-one-ryuichi-sakamoto-s-riot-in-lagos Although much of the episode is on the music itself, we also touch on the politics - particularly how these artists were influenced by and reacting to the culture of the 1960s New Left, during the extraordinary economic boom of the 1980s, and how some of these musicians reintegrated the memory of 20th century Japanese imperialism in Asia into their music. If you'd like to explore some of the music we discuss in the episode you can find an accompanying playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1eM8f2mq7vJYtYuTDq2EKW?si=7dd8d970fb8d4ad2 As well as tracks from the 80s, the playlist also includes some records from the folk rock era of the 1970s, as well as from Vaporwave and Future Funk genres - both of which were influenced by much of the 1980s work that Owen and I discuss. Unfortunately, there are plenty of fantastic records from this era that aren't currently available on the streaming services - including Akiko Yano's best work (especially the album Tadaima) Paradise of Replica by After Dinner, Ichiko Hashimoto's Beauty album, Miho Fujiwara's Heartbeat, Untotooku by Chiemi Manabe and the soundtracks to the animated films Akira and the Wings of Honnêamise amongst others. Do check those out too if you can - many of them are available on YouTube or to purchase from Bandcamp and other such outlets.

The Hey Robot board game Today, we’re playing with voice assistants and thinking about the role of voices in gaming with our guest, game designer and NYU professor Frank Lantz.  Over the past nightmare year of the coronavirus, many of us have been hunkered down, trying to figure out how to pass the time with our families. Board game sales on Amazon were up 4,000% percent in March, when Americans began sheltering in place. And, of course, we’ve also spent way more time interacting with digital technology. These two things have come together in a weird and delightful way in Lantz’s game Hey Robot.  Created by Lantz’s family-owned company Everybody House Games, Hey Robot is a guessing game you play with a group of friends—including your voice assistant or smart speaker. The premise is simple: Make Google Home or Alexa utter the words written in a deck of cards. The questions it raises are complex: What are these digital entities that many of us interact with daily? How have web searches and voice-based computing changed the way we talk? And what does this reveal about language itself?  Hey Robot is available in a free online Quarantine Edition that you can play remotely with your friends. The board game edition is available on Amazon. Today’s show was written and edited by Mack Hagood.  Fake Cumbia music by Mack Hagood.  Ambient music clip taken from Hiroshi Yoshimura’s album Green.

This mix came about from an idea by a listener, Kevin. He suggested a mix based on artists from Japan. I asked for track recommendations and Kevin came back with an entire list. That list fills out most of this mix. I added tracks by Hiroshi Yoshimura, Geskia!, Sawako and Akira Kosemura. Kevin also suggested the title - "Not seeing is a flower" which means that reality can't compete with imagination. The mix itself is a fairly straight forward mix of ambient tracks from Japan. Thanks to Kevin for doing all the heavy lifting on this mix. I think it turned out great. Daylight and the warmth within the glow of a morning are elements which maintain immense value to Gregg Kowalsky. This year marked the release of his first album in some eight long years, an elegant ambient excursion which was widely championed by an array of critics and listeners. Blending the use of analog synths alongside modern day mastering techniques and the use of technology he managed to create a dreamy, ethereal assortment of music which remained as singular and individual as ever. His music is a result of self exploration and lived experiences in climates far warmer than in which we are writing. Both Miami and Los Angeles have been home for Gregg across the last ten years, perhaps this is why he is able to channel musical expression towards the sun, something those in the UK are often lacking. Anyway, all social commentary aside he has truly set the bar for the future and "L'Orange, L'Orange" is a beautiful piece of work. We invited Gregg to record a mix as part of our Monday ambient series as he selects music from the likes of Hiroshi Yoshimura, Harold Budd and many more.
