Nathan and Ben reflect on some of the hiccups and highlights of their podcasting partnership. Then, they weigh in on a particularly unfavorable early-decision program, debate the merit of a tip for evaluating LSAT answer choices, advise a PhD chemist considering a pivot into IP law, and discuss a host of other topics from the mailbag. LSAT Demon LSAT Demon iOS App LSAT Demon Daily Watch Episode 365 on YouTube Thinking LSAT YouTube LSAT Demon YouTube 8:04 - BU Bound - Listener “Unbound” shares some information about Boston University's binding early-decision program, “BU Bound,” which excludes applicants from scholarship consideration. Ben and Nathan think you'd have to be crazy—or crazy rich—to bind yourself to a school in that way. 17:42 - Pearls vs. Turds - “Pick the answer that is hardest to argue against.” Nathan and Ben evaluate Demon student Brad's mantra as a Pearls vs. Turds candidate. They discuss how it might apply to both passage-driven and answer-driven questions in Logical Reasoning. 24:29 - From STEM to IP Law - An anonymous listener with a PhD in biochemistry seeks a transition from scientific research into intellectual property law. The guys share their thoughts on the best time to take the IP bar exam and encourage Anonymous to connect with actual IP lawyers. 30:55 - Find Your Best Hour to Study - An anonymous listener has raised their practice test scores just by listening to the podcast. Now they're ready to sign up for Demon Live and ask the guys how to maximize progress. Ben and Nathan reiterate the importance of focusing on accuracy and understanding. One high-quality study hour per day is the first step to success on the LSAT. 37:41 - Bad Grades in a Personal Statement? - An anonymous listener asks whether they should explain poor grades in their personal statement. Nathan and Ben veto this idea and suggest that Anonymous highlight facts in their favor. 44:01 - The Opposite of Our Advice - Listener Alexander recently discovered the Demon and is “shocked.” His former LSAT tutor had given him all contrary advice: He learned not to use real practice tests, to skim passages, and to diagram sentences—even in Reading Comprehension. Ben and Nathan advise Alexander to forget all the shoddy advice and to begin building effective study habits with LSAT Demon. 57:38 - You Don't Need a Curriculum - Listener Andrew has spent months studying another prep company's “core curriculum” and hasn't taken a practice test since his diagnostic. Nathan and Ben insist that solving one actual LSAT question at a time is the only curriculum you need. 1:10:55 - Reaching the 170s - A new Demon student asks how to reach the 170s from their current low-160s range. The guys recommend practicing daily, reviewing explanations, and taking advantage of the Demon's killer Ask button. 1:16:04 - Screw You, LSAT! (Just Kidding) - Demon student G confesses a newfound love for the LSAT and thanks the Demon team for their help. Keep it up, G!

#58: 23.10.1980 – Top Of The GearThe latest episode of the podcast which asks: has anyone ever done that to someone else’s nostrils? Really?Neither willing to go out and pissed off with staying in, your favourite podcast about old episodes of Top Of The Pops elects to bury its head once more into the comforting bosom of the Eighventies, so come and join us, Pop-Crazed Youngsters – it’s a many-teated beast. This particular episode of The Pops sees our Thursday-evening treat still enclagged with the amorphous goo off the chrysalis it emerged from after the Musicians Union strike of the summer. They’ve had celebrity guests, a news section, two interviews with The Old Sailor and a wedding announcement from Dollar, but this week they’ve gone too far: they’ve done a tie-in with the 1980 Motor Show and filled the studio with cars that no-one can actually see and none of the audience gives the slightest fleck of a toss about. And oh dear; the combination of the smell of new car and the sight of bored-looking women in Talbot t-shirts standing about brings on predictable changes in our host, clad in a racing driver one-piece with the zip slung low: The Living Gnasher Badge… Musicwise, it’s cast-iron proof that 1980 really was the Ken of the Eighventies. Quo tap their noses at us as they lumber into the new decade. The Nolans get ready to rip through Japan like a four-headed Kay’s Catalogue Godzilla. Andy McCluskey gets given a bass in a doomed attempt to put him off his dancing. Poor Legs & Co get stared at by blokes in cars, like a Disco version of Never Go With Strangers. The Number One is more adult-orientated rammel. And DLT goes full-on PLP with Elkie Brooks. Rock Expert David Stubbs and Taylor Parkes join Al Needham for a leaf through the Exchange and Mart of Pop, swooping off on such tangents as how rubbish it’s going to be when we come out of lockdown, how unprepared your local market was for the onset of New Romantic, Gilbert O’Sullivan’s Erotic Meat Buffet, Eighties synth-duo intermarriage, and SCREW YOU, JOANNE GREENWOOD FROM CLASS 4A.Video Playlist | Subscribe | Facebook | Twitter | The Chart Music Wiki | Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Before he was the front man, bandleader and namesake of a Los Angeles-based project on the Merge Records roster, Mike Krol was a Wauwatosa teen who loved ska. Recently, while in Milwaukee to play a homecoming show in support of his latest/greatest album, Power Chords, Krol met up with My First Band host Tyler Maas to talk about his very early musical endeavors. In a studio space that was kindly offered to them by WMSE, Krol openly talked about his "checkered past" in suburban ska projects like Spazmatics and The Reactants, recording a demo at UW-Oshkosh, playing shows in churches, his short-lived Saved By The Bell tribute band called The Lark Voorhies, and the impetus of his solo venture (which he almost named "World Denominators"). Before setting out on the European leg of the Power Chords tour, Krol also sent us a few Reactants songs to play at the end of the episode, including a never-before-heard demo about his high school teacher's hairstyle. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and PrideFest Milwaukee. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and The Reactants ("Mrs. Ward" and "Screw You").

Welcome to the All Fired Up Second Annual Crappy Awards! In this nail biting episode, we hear rants from people all over the world who are letting us know their thoughts on the sh*ttiest diet culture trend for 2018. Hilary Smith, social justice warrior, pole dancer AND winner of last years’ Inaugural Crappy awards, is here to judge the contestants, and my goodness it’s a stiff competition! Pour yourself a drink and get ready to be utterly gobsmacked by the utter diet culture bullsh*t delivered in 2018!   Show Notes It’s time for the 2nd annual Crappy Awards show! Thank you to everybody who submitted their audio rants, we have a very high standard of entries this year! And it is fantastic to have applications from listeners as well as non-diet health professionals. What was the worst, most irritating diet culture trend for 2018? I am joined by last year’s Crappy Award winner, Hilary Smith, who has kindly agreed to come on the show to judge this years entrants and crown the new winner! Hilary will judge each nomination according to Creativity, Quality of the Argument, Passion, and Number of Swear Words. Louise needed to have a little rant about her pet peeve for 2018, the f*cking intermittent fasting craze, with a special mention to Michael Mosely for expanding the spread of such bullsh*t. And to all of the health professionals and researchers pretending that this stupidity is the key to long lasting, effective weight loss, Louise says SCREW YOU! Crappy Award Nominee #1, from New Zealand’s Tania Vincent from Thrive Nutrition: A horrific facebook ad for a fat shaming phone app, using cute little cartoon characters to sell calorie control. Crappy Award Nominee #2, from listener Jade Pettersen: After having gastric surgery, it seems like your body becomes public property! And the support groups online are like breeding grounds for eating disorders! Crappy Award Nominee #3, from listener Ava: Louise reads a heartfelt email about how the weight loss surgery business model is targeting vulnerable people. A good friend of Ava’s was encouraged to take out her superannuation to pay for the surgery, even though her friend has significant mental health issues. Ethics anyone? Crappy Award Nominee #4, from Mind Body Well psychologist Janet Lowndes: The incredibly unethical “Fast Track to Health” trial being run here in Sydney and Melbourne, where adolescents are being  put on intermittent fasting diets for an entire year, in spite of the lack of efficacy for this type of diet. This is just a recipe for an eating disorder, and it is equally heart breaking and enraging that it’s allowed to proceed! Crappy Award Nominee #5, from Heather Eisman all the way from Alaska!: The “Bright Lines Eating” program by Susan Peirce Thompson, a horrendous example of monetising the 12 step programs and increasing restrictive thinking in people who already have eating issues. Crappy Award Nominee #6, from UNTRAPPED member Alyssa: Unsolicited health advice from thin people who think they are doctors. Crappy Award Nominee #7, also from Alyssa: The Cookie Diet - almost no words! Crappy Award Nominee #8, from Anna Hearn from Haven Wellness: The entire diet culture and its relentless toxicity, in particular this idea (incorrect) that we can all ‘choose’ our own body weight. Not supported by science! Crappy Award Nominee #9, from Sona, member of Haven Wellness: Policing people who speak about HAES beyond the idea of body acceptance/body love. Crappy Award Nominee #10, from Natalie Haider, psychologist and yoga instructor from Haven Wellness: Placing the pursuit of health on a pedestal while ignoring all of the other ways humans can be absolute shits to each other. Crappy Award Nominee #11, from listener Mia in California: “WW” and the awful Mindy Grossman, planning to get WW into every home on the planet. Please bugger off Mindy. The Second Annual Crappy Award Prize is a Bullshit Button! The Crappy Award winner is Alyssa, nominee #6, for unsolicited health advice! Unbelievably well delivered sarcasm means Alyssa wins, with 4 equally amazing ties for second place! David Messier is a  multi-talented artist and music industry powerhouse based in Austin, Texas. A Trustee of the Recording Academy, Messier is an accomplished producer, entrepreneur, singer and songwriter hailed as “ a hurricane force of music.”   He has served as President of the Texas Chapter of the Recording Academy and as a Governor of the Academy. Messier was the front man of the Boston-based band Papermoon, and after moving his studio and himself to Austin and working both in music and in philanthropy, received the “Austin Under 40 Award” in the category of Arts and Entertainment. He recently released his new album, the self- reflective Time Bomb, which took only 22 days to write and record at his recording studio in East Austin, Same Sky Productions.  Always alert to music and the workings of his lyrical mind, the album’s guitar heavy title  track is based on a Wurlitzer lick from one of Messier’s many phone recordings. The Living Roomers , a new punk band comprised of Tru, Lucky and Rico,  started in the living room of the band’s home in LA in late 2017 and just self-released their first single, “Screw You” along with a video for the track. Influenced by the Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Ramones, Velvet Underground, X, The White Stripes, Joy Division and Courtney Barnett among many others. The trio calls their title song, “Screw You” a call to action. It pushes back against those who try to put people, women in particular, in boxes, something totally foreign to the fresh sound and deep energy of this trio making a name for itself in LA.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the grape (and region) that is most associated with California wines to the average consumer and wine drinker. However, there is a LOT more to California wines than Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnays which have been buried in oak so much that they may as well be coffins. There are a lot of cool things going on in California Wine that aren't really talked about, which is why the focus of this episode is the 2016 Pretty Young Thing Cabernet Pfeffer, from Winc. [https://www.winc.com/hi/cburkett] (They usually have some fun and interesting goodies available, so use that link if you want to join in the fun... it gets me some more wine, and gets you some too.  For the record, they are not a sponsor.) I chose the 2016 Pretty Young Thing Cab-Pfef for a couple of reasons.  For one, it is a wine that can easily induce conversation on several topics, such as the winemaking technique of Carbonic Maceration, and the increasing popularity of "natural wines," especially in vintages from California. (Just what counts as a "natural wine," anyway? Which reminds me, I want to give a shout-out to my other new favorite wine podcast: Natural Disasters. I only found out these guys about after recording this episode. They're hilarious folks, go and listen. https://soundcloud.com/user-562369794-993024923 )  Gary and I also dabble with the great mystery surrounding Cabernet Pfeffer--namely, just what the hell IS Cabernet Pfeffer?   Also, this bottle was kind of a "Screw You" to the people who are demanding I review a California Cabernet for this podcast.  Here you go.  This is your California Cabernet.  (You didn't specify WHICH Cabernet, bitches.) I acquired this bottle with my own cash from Winc.com, and while this bottle is long gone, there is another Cabernet Pfeffer there right now.

I like murder mysteries, I like seeing vigilantes dole out murder, hell I like flocks of crows. I like killing so much, I kill TIME. But everywhere around me, there’s people just ignoring all the possible murder they could be doing! Look people, you gotta make room for murder in your life. Take a step back, relax, and lay the smack down on some chronal units. You’ll be much happier. Have you ever seen a sad serial killer? That’s what I thought. It used to be, back in the day, when you would hit something on the road, it was one of two things. Either you just helped tame the rabid coyote population of the town you were in, or you put some hobo out of his misery. In our hustle and bustle of modern life now, chances are it’s neither and it’s just some speed humps. Somehow these coyotes and hobos banded together and got these installed everywhere, and now they’re copulating into a stinky coyote/hobo mutant breed. So, uh, watch out for those. They won’t be the first of your problems though. First, you’ll have to survive the YouTube invasion. They’ll start with the bombings. Mass thumbs downs everywhere. Next, the sleeper cells are activated. Good, hard working people that you’ve known your whole life will grab you in your sleep, shake you and yell "GET YOUTUBE RED”. Then, the final phase: total destruction. Spiderman and Elsa from Frozen will descend from the heavens, twerking on and pranking everyone until we all submit. And as you walk through what used to be the streets of Chicago, now known as Google State Sector 115.AX, with your aging, second generation feeding device beeping at you, warning of low battery, you’ll be wishing for a universal feed port. But no, the competing companies made like five different kinds, and changed them every year. So now you have to tear open a feed pod, re-hydrate it, and force yourself to swallow it. Good luck buddy, that last one’s liver and onion flavored. We also taste test this week's voicemails to see if they're as spicy as last week's. Usually this is where we thank you for listening, but not this week. Seems about right for this administration. We were probably asking for it, though; flaunting our high-speed connections and posting information whenever and wherever we wanted. We probably secretly wanted this. No? No one wanted this? You're telling me 99.7% of the population actively said "NO WE DON'T WANT THIS" and they still did it? Well, I'm sure we still all had it coming.Headlines:FCC tosses out your comments because SCREW YOUFCC keeps all the fake anti-NN comments because SCREW YOUFCC releases new policy titled SCREW YOU, during Thanksgiving dinner because SCREW YOUFCC moves to block states from protecting citizens because SCREW THEM TOOUber . . . . grooooaaaannnnnnnnStill Uber . . . . ughhhhhJeez, Uber. On Today’s episode of The World In My Eyes, well I have my panties in a bunch about something and I think you guys might find it interesting, so I thought I’d go ahead and share it with you. As many of you know, I have a good friend by the name of Alice who was going through some work trauma last year, and it’s taken her a while, but she’s finally ready for me to share her story with all of you. For 10 years, Alice dedicated her life to working for Screw You, LLC. She rose through the ranks from analyst to senior manager. But her path wasn’t smooth. I told her to find another job many times before because they weren’t treating her well. When it was time for her to get a promotion two years ago, she was passed over for another male colleague. The guy was qualified, but she was more qualified. Unfortunately, she had to wait another 6 months before being considered again. The great kick in the pants is the guy who got promoted quit six months later taking some other job. For managers out there, this is your worst nightmare because those employees who you didn’t promote will not only secretly laugh at your poor managerial decision; they will also make you regret your choice as well.

In episode six, we examine society and hilarity ensues. Cats are drunk, people are wielding swords, the literal Nutty Professor proposes goat testicles as the cure for everything, and the President of Iceland wants to ban pineapples.   So strap in, cause we’re in for a crazy ride... But not one that will kill you, (although, Dave will tell you about one that will) - one that will make you laugh and marvel at the ridiculous world we live in.   We’re drinking Beer Run IPA from Ninkasi Brewing and Red Stripe Jamaican Lager   Dude, Did You Hear?   Alexander the Great hosted an Olympics. But since no one knew how to sport, they just got hammered instead.    Someone designed a roller coaster that will literally kill you. Because some people might want to ensure they go out in style. And because nothing makes population control seem fun like loop-de-loops.   Spotify releases the top songs to have sex to. And it turns out Australia is into getting down to some out of this world tunes…   Speaking of “out of this world,” scientists make a big discovery of the exo-planetary kind.   People start going to happy hour with their cats and the rest of us facepalm while we ponder the future of society.   Sword Watch 2017 is now officially underway.    Andy and Dave get excited about what it would look like if modern day US Marines fought the Roman Empire. Please make this happen Hollywood. We Recommend:   Carrying a pocket knife. Whether it's fending off wino cats or opening a bottle of Pinot in the desert, you need a pocket knife. DO IT. BE PREPARED.   “Man of the People” from the Reply All podcast. This story contains goat testicles. That should be enough for you.   Developing UPenn's key to the ultimate secret of success. Rooster Cogburn would approve.   American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson. Because we all need a refresher on the craziness that was that trial. Get on it Netflixers!   Dave has begun his journey through the AFI’s top 100 movies of all time. He recommends you do the same. We Don't Recommend: Paying your employees too much money. LISTEN UP GOOGLE!   Dave doesn't feel the pull to the Light Phone. Which is basically the e-cigarette of smartphones. Use self-control like a real person.   Lying to beer snobs (even in Ohio). Because they will find you. And they will sue you.   Dave and Andy go valiantly to the defense of pineapple on pizza. Because it’s delicious. SCREW YOU, ICELAND.   Dave and Andy predict that Jason Segel will eat someone’s face.   Stick Around while Sir Patrick Stewart and his crew receive a distress signal from an underground Icelandic group of pineapple lovers. We uncovered a very special "Captain's Log" in honor of his upcoming poop emoji role.

You knew this was coming. Anyone who thought the Iranians were just going to roll over and capitulate to Trump's ultimatum does not understand the culture or the social pressures of the Middle East. Now Ayatollah Khomeini has fired back in a statement saying the Iranian nation will respond to Trump's comments on February 10th. Nobody knows what that means, but I'd expect it means another missile test designed to send a big "SCREW YOU" in America's direction. While Trump has worked had to avoid a conflict with Russia he seems determined to start a new conflict with Iran and ruffle feathers with China and Mexico.Don't get me wrong; I've got no issue with our President ruffling feathers. There's far too much consideration given to public sentiment and media response. But I do worry when our Presidents words could expand our war footing and put American lives at risk. ***We're also going to talk a little about gun control and open carry today. You won't find anyone more pro-gun than me, but theses open carry nuts often do more harm than good with their provocative display of weapons. It's another great show, Don't forget to like and share.
