After 27 years, Melvyn Bragg has decided to step down from the In Our Time presenter's chair. With over a thousand episodes to choose from, he has selected just six that capture the huge range and depth of the subjects he and his experts have tackled. In this second of his choices, we hear Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss one of his favourite poets.Their topic is Thomas Hardy (1840 -1928) and his commitment to poetry, which he prized far above his novels. In the 1890s, once he had earned enough from his fiction, Hardy stopped writing novels altogether and returned to the poetry he had largely put aside since his twenties. He hoped that he might be ranked one day alongside Shelley and Byron, worthy of inclusion in a collection such as Palgrave's Golden Treasury which had inspired him. Hardy kept writing poems for the rest of his life, in different styles and metres, and he explored genres from nature, to war, to epic. Among his best known are what he called his Poems of 1912 to 13, responding to his grief at the death of his first wife, Emma (1840 -1912), who he credited as the one who had made it possible for him to leave his work as an architect's clerk and to write the novels that made him famous.WithMark Ford Poet, and Professor of English and American Literature, University College London.Jane Thomas Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Hull and Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University of LeedsAndTim Armstrong Professor of Modern English and American Literature at Royal Holloway, University of LondonProducer: Simon TillotsonSpanning history, religion, culture, science and philosophy, In Our Time from BBC Radio 4 is essential listening for the intellectually curious. President Trump is done waiting. From the Oval Office to the world stage, he's calling on Republicans to end the filibuster and push his agenda forward—warning that despite holding power across Washington, America is slipping backward. Abroad, Trump is doubling down on support for Israel and Prime Minister Netanyahu, even as BiBi faces three corruption trials and new questions emerge about his alleged role in funneling funds to Hamas through Qatar.Today, geopolitical analyst Halsey English joins Joe to break down explosive new revelations that the U.S. is preparing to build a $500 million military base on the Gaza border. Is this about peacekeeping—or planting America deeper in Israel's conflicts? With 10,000 troops planned and zero transparency from Washington, the stakes for Middle East stability—and U.S. taxpayers—couldn't be higher. Then in Follow-Up Wednesday, Joe takes aim at previous stories around campus violence, societal erosion, and government corruption. From UC Berkeley's racial double standard to Senator Scott Weiner dodging real questions, and DC Draino calling out election crimes—Joe connects the dots on a system unraveling. No filter, no fear—just truth that cuts through the noise. Buckle up.
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 13, 2025 is: peremptory puh-REMP-tuh-ree adjective Peremptory is a formal word used especially in legal contexts to describe an order, command, etc., that requires immediate compliance with no opportunity to show why one should not comply. It is also used disapprovingly to describe someone with an arrogant attitude, or something indicative of such an attitude. // The soldiers were given a peremptory order to abandon the mission. // The company's president tends to adopt a peremptory manner especially at the negotiating table. See the entry > Examples: “Cook had changed. He seemed restless and preoccupied. There was a peremptory tone, a raw edge in some of his dealings. Perhaps he had started to believe his own celebrity. Or perhaps, showing his age and the long toll of so many rough miles at sea, he had become less tolerant of the hardships and drudgeries of transoceanic sailing.” — Hampton Sides, The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook, 2024 Did you know? Peremptory comes from the Latin verb perimere, meaning “to take entirely” or “to destroy,” which in turn combines the prefix per- (“throughout” or “thoroughly”) and the verb emere (“to take”). Peremptory implies the removal of one's option to disagree or contest something, and sometimes suggests an abrupt dictatorial manner combined with an unwillingness to tolerate disobedience or dissent, as in “employees given a peremptory dismissal.” Not to sound peremptory ourselves, but don't confuse peremptory with the similar-sounding (and related) adjective preemptive, meaning “marked by the seizing of the initiative,” as in “a preemptive attack.”
Are fermented foods the missing link in our health, or just the latest wellness trend? In this episode, Professor Tim Spector, a world-leading scientist in gut health and co-founder of ZOE, challenges what we think we know about yogurt, cheese, kombucha, and more. Tim uncovers why milk and cheese aren't the same in your body - and the surprising science showing cheese might not be the heart villain it was once made out to be. He also shares emerging evidence that fermented foods could influence inflammation, immunity, metabolism, and even mood, often in a matter of weeks. From a groundbreaking Stanford study to insights from ZOE's research on 9,000 people, this episode reveals why fermented foods are more powerful, and more misunderstood, than most of us realise. Tim breaks down the easiest ways to actually eat more fermented foods without overhauling your life. By the end, you'll be questioning what's in your fridge - and wondering if one tiny daily habit could do far more than you'd ever expect. Unwrap the truth about your food

If you've ever read a translation like the King James Version, you know when you get to the word “patience,” the older English translation will use the word “longsuffering.” This is because the Greek word for patience literally means to suffer a long time, which doesn't sound very promising. What it's saying is that patience is the trait by which you are able to bear up under difficulty without giving up or giving in to bitterness. There are two kinds of patience: there's patience under difficult circumstances and there's patience with people. And Romans 12 is a remarkable passage about how to be patient and gracious to people who are opposing you. This passage gives us 1) a principle of showing patience, 2) some ideas on how to practice it, and 3) how to get the power to do it. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on May 2, 2010. Series: The Real Signs of the Spirit. Scripture: Romans 12:9-21. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. If execution stopped being the bottleneck, how would you build? We sit down with Dr. Alex Mehr—former NASA scientist turned serial founder—to unpack a seismic shift: AI can now translate plain English into working software, from slick landing pages to full MVPs. That means speed wins, iteration compounds, and non-technical founders finally have a real shot at competing with incumbents.Alex shares the arc from launching multiple apps before one hit to building Famous.ai, a platform designed to compress the distance between idea and customer. We talk about why most teams don't fail; their first ideas do. The fix isn't more debate—it's more experiments. With AI handling the heavy lifting, you can validate a concept in hours, not months, and keep cash for growth instead of sunk costs. He breaks down realistic timelines, how direct App Store submission works, and why web apps can be live the same day. This conversation is part playbook, part mindset reset. We get honest about what entrepreneurship really trades: you don't get free time, you get free will. You choose how to suffer. The dopamine hit of a launch that lands is unmatched, but it relies on a foundation of small and fast failures. Alex calls out a new divide—before 2025 and after 2025—where the ability to ship quickly becomes the primary competitive advantage. We dig into when to pivot, how to avoid “dying on the wrong hill,” and why you should test markets instead of predicting them.If you've been sitting on an idea because you can't code, this is your wake-up call. Build the first version, learn from real users, and iterate. When tools remove excuses, momentum becomes a decision. In our latest episode of Kosher Money, we sit down with Rabbi Shais Taub — one of the most sought-after Jewish thinkers of our time — to explore one of life's most misunderstood topics: money.• What's the deal with Jews AND money? • Should we care what people say about it? • Is money spiritual or material? • Why does the Torah's view of wealth differ so radically from society's?In this eye-opening and deeply soulful conversation, Rabbi Taub reveals that money is not evil — it's energy. It's potential that can build worlds or burn them down.Eli said it was one of the top five conversations he's ever had in his life. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 12, 2025 is: abide uh-BYDE verb If someone cannot abide someone or something bad, unpleasant, etc., they cannot tolerate or accept that person or thing. Abide can also mean "to accept without objection" and "to remain or continue." // I just can't abide such blatant dishonesty. // Residents agree to abide by the dorm's rules. See the entry > Examples: "If a legal party ... doesn't like a district court ruling, it is free to challenge the decision to a federal appellate court and then the Supreme Court. But while the appeal plays out, the legal party must abide by the ruling." — Will Rogers, The Baltimore Sun, 22 July 2025 Did you know? Abide has abided in the English language since before the 12th century, picking up along the way several meanings and inflections that are now rare or no longer in use. For instance, one of abide's former meanings was "to stop" and its former past participle was abidden (whereas we now use abided or abode). Today, abide often turns up in the phrase "can't abide" to say that someone cannot tolerate or accept something. The expression abide by, which means "to accept and be guided by (something)," is also common. Related terms include abiding, meaning "continuing for a long time" or "not changing" (as in "an abiding friendship"), abidance ("continuance" or "the act or process of doing what you have been asked or ordered to do"), and abode ("the place where someone lives").

Gary continues going through 1 Corinthians 15 with Kim Burgess. In this episode, they discuss death as being the final enemy. Kim brings up some very interesting points that are not obvious from our English translations. Sheol, or the realm of the dead, was a very big topic in the mind of first century Jews and this is what Paul is addressing.

We've been sitting on this idea for a while, but with Chloe Zhao's Oscar hopeful Hamnet opening this month, it seemed like as good a time as any to finally move forward with one of the biggest topics a film podcast can tackle: big-screen adaptations of the work of Elizabethen/Jacobean playwright William Shakespeare, the most-adapted writer in film history on top of being the most famous name in the history of both English drama and English literature. Such a grand subject deserves a bigger crowd, so this week, Tim is joined by no fewer than three Alternate Ending regulars: Gavin McDowell, Brian Fowler, and Caleb Wimble. Together they discuss what makes a good Shakespeare movie, what we should do with adaptations that discard the original text, and why there are such a disproportionately high number of good Macbeths. Before the main event, our regular movie roundtable covers a wide range of movies, as wide as the number of genres good old Billy S. touched on his career: Brian has caught up with Black Phone 2, Gavin celebrates Armistice Day with nice, pleasant WWI/Armenian genocide movie, 2016's The Promise, Caleb has checked out the brand-new Predator: Badlands, and thanks to Patreon supporter Robin Zimmerman, Tim is here to discuss 2015 cult film Turbo Kid.

I get it - make and do can be super confusing. You've probably learned that both verbs mean "to take action" in some way. But for example, how do you know when to say make a mistake or do your homework? That's what we're going to clear up.Today we're going to talk about two small but mighty verbs in English: make and do. These verbs show up everywhere - but the tricky part is knowing when to use which one. So today, we'll go over the core difference between make and do, and I'll give you lots of real-life examples along the way. Let's get started!Build Vocabulary With My Free Vocabulary Workshop: https://learn.myhappyenglish.com/vocabulary-workshop-signup
Send us a textMilk and honey don't just flow; they're worked for, guarded, and gathered with skill. That's our doorway into a bigger truth about writing: promises carry processes, and pages are built on practice. We start with a vivid reading on diligence and devotion, then unpack a grounded approach to creativity that swaps waiting for inspiration with building muscle memory. If you've ever asked “How do I start?” the answer is simpler than you think—start small, return often, and let experience do the heavy lifting. We walk through practical rhythms that make words show up reliably. Record a specific moment each day and watch how those fragments stitch into a voice. Try writing out of sequence—begin at the ending you can already see, or drop into the middle where the heat lives. Draw courage from scripture or your core texts, not as slogans but as seeds that bloom into scenes and questions. Think in your first language to access textures English can't easily name, then translate the meaning in a way that keeps your persona alive on the page. Let the fall be part of the dance; drafts are allowed to be clumsy on their way to clarity.Research expands range. We make the case for stepping into physical libraries, where serendipity outperforms search and forgotten histories surface—like how everyday foods and places evolve into cultural icons. Travel when possible, or travel deeply where you are: listen to streets, study routines, collect details that anchor story. Along the way, we get honest about validation, ghostwriting without the ghosts, and the simple schedules that help you keep momentum—ten minutes, one page, consistent returns. Writing isn't easy, but it is possible, and possibility makes room for ease.If this conversation nudged you to pick up the pen, follow and subscribe for more craft, courage, and concrete practices. Song: Set Us Free Music by: Elise Witt Notes: Elise is an inventive songleader and huge heart in Georgia, USA, whom I met online during the pandemic doing vocal improv with our shared teacher, Rhiannon... but I had been in contact with her before then because I wanted to sing a song of hers with my community chorus. Here, she has set words from the Rev. Timothy McDonald, calling us to the kind of integrity that gives freedom. I teach the song a capella, so you can sing with just my voice -- and then do it with piano at the end, so you can experience it that way -- and then if you follow the shownote links, you can sing it in Spanish and English with Elise, Judith & Lisset Rodés -- Lisset wrote the Spanish words... and it's a little slower, a little more legato than I sang it. I love it when there's a chance to compare different versions of the same song! Songwriter Info: Elise's concerts of Global, Local & Homemade Songs™ and her Impromptu Glorious Chorus™ workshops create and connect singing communities around the world. Born in Switzerland, raised in NC, and living in Atlanta since 1977, Elise speaks 5 languages fluently and sings in at least a dozen more. The Elise Witt Choral Series features choral arrangements of her original compositions and she recently published All Singing, a songbook with 58 original songs including music notation, lyrics and chords, stories and photos. A founding member of Atlanta's Theatrical Outfit, Elise spent many years as a Resident Artist, visiting communities around the state of Georgia and the Southeast, teaching global music and writing local songs with students of all ages. From 2009 until 2024 Elise served as Director of Music Programs at the Global Village Project, a non-profit, special purpose middle school for teenage refugee girls in Decatur Georgia, for which she published Imagine A Circle: The Global Village Songbook, Using Singing and Songwriting to teach English for Multi-lingual learners. Elise currently gathers singers of all persuasions in joyous circles, and continues her global touring.
