Interview with retired ATF Special Agent Roland Ballesteros. Years of Service: 1987-2018Roland grew up in Texas in a large family with a history of law enforcement going back to the 1800s to his great, great, great grandfather, who was a deputy sheriff. That service history continued through his family, with one brother becoming an ATF Special Agent and another working for the Air Force and, ultimately, the NSA.As Roland was searching for what to do with his life, one brother took him for a ride along in high school, and from that moment on Roland realized he wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. As Roland was finishing college, he knew he didn't want to work in an office and was trying to decide what law enforcement agency to go into. His brother told Roland to join the ATF, which Roland knew little about. After researching the agency, Roland applied and began his career in 1987 as a Special Agent.During his career, Roland has worked on investigations focusing on felons in possession, fugitive apprehension, militias, the Centennial Park Bombing, the Eric Rudolph manhunt, homicides, gangs, home invasions, drug trafficking, the DC Sniper, and numerous other investigations.Roland has been involved in investigations throughout the United States and other countries, including Mexico and El Salvador.During this interview, Roland tells numerous stories about his career, including a harrowing recounting of the search warrant served at the infamous Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas.

Eric Rudolph spent five years on the run before being captured early one morning while searching for food in Murphy, N.C. Investigators spent the next few years learning more about what turned him into a bomber as he led them to hundreds of pounds of dynamite he'd stashed in the mountains of North Carolina. As he prepared to go to trial in 2005 for the bombing of an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, he made a startling decision that would spare him from the death penalty. On July 27, 1996, a domestic terrorist's bomb shattered the safety of the Summer Centennial Olympic Games held in Atlanta, GA. The FBI's flawed search and the media's fixation on the wrong man have been the focus of this moment in history for nearly 30 years. But the story didn't end there. Eric Rudolph, a fervent follower of the white supremacist Christian Identity Movement, wasn't finished. The terrorist planned his next, more overtly political attacks on two abortion clinics, one in Birmingham, and one in metro Atlanta, as well as a lesbian nightclub, also in the Atlanta area. Co-produced by Tenderfoot TV and iHeartPodcasts, Flashpoint will revisit the manhunt for a serial bomber and delve into the harrowing aftermath, and the victims overlooked, a chapter often forgotten. The series will explore the impact of these attacks through the personal stories of the victims and their families who were left to pick up the pieces. Flashpoint sheds light on the impact of these events through a personal lens, unearthing Rudolph's motivations, while exploring America's greatest threat, the political and religious radicalization of homegrown terrorists. The secluded mountains of North Carolina turned into an excellent place to hide for a man named Eric Rudolph, who was charged with a series of bombings in 1996 and 1997, including one that injured hundreds of people in Centennial Park at the Atlanta, Ga. Summer Olympics. Who was the elusive "mountain man" and how did he evade capture for five years? For 5 years, the 1996 Atlanta Olympic bomber had been living on the lam in the woods. Locals sold shirts that read “Eric Rudolph: 1998 Hide and Seek champion.” Meanwhile, Eric ate salamanders, shot bears, and racked up the bill for one of the most costly manhunts in U.S. history. How did he do it? What were his motivations? And why was he able to pull off four separate bombings before police finally nabbed him?Journalist Henry Schuster, author of Hunting Eric Rudolph, was there when that first bomb went off in Atlanta, and he joins us this week on Crime Story. For ad-free listening to Crime Story, subscribe to CBC's True Crime channel on Apple Podcasts.

Over the last couple of years, one of the most fascinating guest we've had is former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker. Not only for his part in bringing Olympic bomber Eric Rudolph to justice, but because the unique viewpoint that he brings to the table thru his experiences with the agency and beyond. And this morning he called to talk about the CBS series "FBI True", and as always, 10 minutes just wasn't enough to ask everything we want to know!
Following the war hero of last week, today we have a guy who couldn't make it in the military. Eric Rudolph was pretty shit at everything in his life really. Then after hanging around with some dipshits for a while he decided the world needed more craters in it. There's plenty of incompetence along the way, both from the police and our person of interest for this episode. So prepare to hate everyone. Enjoy!

They say never meet your heroes, but we're so glad we got to meet two of ours, as they gave us the shot of hope at the end of our conversation that we all need, considering everything that's happening around us currently. To be honest, we had been looking forward to this conversation ever since David Louie (Episode 212, if you want to go back and listen) made this introduction, and it was everything we had hoped it would be. Not only because Doug Jones and Bill Baxley are legal powerhouses, but also because they were just two men, doing what they believed to be right, because perhaps they were the only ones who could have fought this fight. And that - the power of one, standing in your beliefs and speaking up for those who cannot - is something we should all carry with us from this conversation. What to listen for: How two white men growing up in the South came to their belief in and advocacy of equal justice The role that witnesses - especially the white wives of Klans members - played in the various trials, both in positive and negative ways What these lawyers would say to people who diminish the ongoing impact of systemic racism, and claim that “slavery happened so long ago”... The most powerful way young people can do so that lawmakers hear their voices About Doug Jones: A celebrated prosecutor who brought long-overdue justice to the victims of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, Doug has built his career on fighting impossible battles. In 2017, he shocked the political establishment by winning a special election to fill a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama—the first Democrat to do so in 25 years in the state. On Capitol Hill, he quickly built a reputation as a well-regarded and effective legislator, passing more than two dozen bipartisan bills into law in just three years. Doug's first job after graduating from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University was as staff counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary for Sen. Howell Heflin (D-AL). Following his stint in Washington, he served as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1980 to 1984. Doug left government service in 1984 and was in the private practice of law in Birmingham, Alabama, until President Bill Clinton nominated him to the position of U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. His nomination was confirmed by the Senate in November 1997, and he served as U.S. attorney until June 2001. It was while serving in that position that he successfully prosecuted 2 of the 4 men responsible for the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church—finally bringing full justice and closure nearly 40 years after the attack that killed four young girls. Along with taking on the Ku Klux Klan, he indicted domestic terrorist Eric Rudolph and prosecuted other criminals who sought to use fear, hatred, and violence to inhibit the rights of others. Doug is the author of Bending Toward Justice: The Birmingham Church Bombing that Changed the Course of Civil Rights which recounts a key moment in our long national struggle for equality and the successful prosecution of two Ku Klux Klan members 40 years later. In 2022, Doug was selected by President Joe Biden to be the Nomination Advisor for Legislative Affairs to help to guide the selection, nomination, and successful confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States. In this role, Doug continued to upon the important relationships he had established while in Congress to help gain bipartisan support for the President's nominee. Today, Doug is of Counsel with ArentFox Schiff, a Senior Distinguish Fellow with the Center for American Progress, and is involved in a variety of different political and civic organizations. Doug resides in Birmingham, AL with his wife, Louise, and dogs, Scout and Dakota. He has three children Courtney (married to Rip Andrews), Carson, and Christopher as well as two grandchildren, Ever and Ollie. About Bill Baxley: Bill Baxley was elected Attorney General at age 28. Remarkably, he was already a seasoned prosecutor, having tried dozens of jury trials as District Attorney in Houston and Henry counties. He served as Alabama's Attorney General from 1971 to 1979 and its Lieutenant Governor from 1983 to 1987. As Attorney General, Bill served as lead trial counsel in every major action on the State's behalf, civil and criminal. He aggressively prosecuted them all. He appointed the state's first African-American assistant attorney general, who later became a federal judge. His successful prosecution of Ku Klux Klansman Robert Chambliss for the 1963 bombing of Birmingham's Sixteenth Street Baptist Church is featured in the Spike Lee documentary, 4 Little Girls. His legal accomplishments are also documented in Lay Down with Dogs, Until Justice Rolls Down, and numerous other publications. Throughout his career, Bill Baxley has served in the Alabama Army National Guard, beginning as an enlisted clerk and rising through the ranks to retire as Colonel, JAG Corps. He has successfully represented clients in the United States Supreme Court, the Alabama Supreme Court, and in appellate and trial courts over which they exercise jurisdiction. He primarily represents large business corporations yet continues to represent individuals of modest means. Those efforts have earned him the distinction of being selected as a Fellow in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers as well as being recognized by his peers as a Super Lawyer. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Andrew Gumbel. A English-born Oxford University alumnus, Mr. Gumbel ““worked for more than twenty years as a foreign correspondent for British newspapers the Guardian and the Independent, including assignments in the Balkans, Italy, the Middle East, and, since 1998, the United States. He has won awards for investigative reporting and political commentary, and written widely for U.S. publications including the Los Angeles Times and The Atlantic.” Gumbel is a White Man, a Racist Suspect. The Katherine Massey Book Club just concluded Dave Cullen's Columbine, which details the failed 1999 bombing in Colorado. Gus began connecting the dots to the many White bombers of the decade. The late Ted ‘Unabomber' Kaczynski, Eric Rudolph - who bombed the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and McVeigh were all actively terrorizing in the '90's. We'll discuss the 2012 publication that Gumbel co-authored, OKLAHOMA CITY. The text details how McVeigh's trial was relocated to Denver, and he and Kaczynski shared the same unit of a Colorado supermax prison. We'll discuss Gumbel's research on the FBI investigation in the bombing and if they ignored or failed to investigate other White Supremacists who may have helped massacre 168 people at the Alfred P. Murrah building. Many of them children. We'll try to include evidence of McVeigh's “bisexuality.” #KeepItProfessional #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 9th study session on Dave Cullen's COLUMBINE. On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 people and injured 24 more at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. This week, we continue our exploration of Cullen's narrative of the events leading up to the massacre, the motivations of the White killers, and the aftermath of the slaughter. The teen duo apparently had contact with enforcement officers well in advance of the shooting. In addition to factual errors, like Eric Harris's supposed tryst with twenty-something Brenda Parker, Cullen omits much of the evidence of these White boys's Racism - such as reports of their Racist Jokes and routine public commentary about killing black people and "Jews." He also omits their fascination with Racist serial killers like Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson. Last week, Cullen told us Dylan was depressed and slacking hard during his final year of high school leading up to the massacre. It's as though we are supposed to forget Vodka is the one accepted to college. Eric had no post graduation plans. Cullen compares the two White teens to other terrorist actors of the decade like Timothy McVeigh and the Palestinian Liberation Army. This ignores other White bombers like Ted Kaczynski and Eric Rudolph who were actively killing people during the same period. The Columbine duo used similar terrorist techniques to Rudolph - secondary explosives to potentially kill first responding police and medical personnel. Klebold and Harris should be grouped with and understood within the context of a decade dominated White Terrorists who bombed and killed for thrills and personal grievances. #MakeMyDay #BomberMan #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 8th study session on Dave Cullen's COLUMBINE. Last week, we got enough detail for Gus to conclude it was criminally negligent that Harris and Klebold's parents, school officials and local enforcement officers failed to intercept this plot. TWO separate White people found one of Eric Harris's explosive devices in advance of the attack. Each of these two highly intelligent young lads had been suspended from school, a felony arrest record, and both admitted to underage substance use. If these were two black boys, they would have been "pipelined" to prison before they could spell bomb - their parents too. Cullen also detailed the extraordinary hypocrisy with Cassie Bernall's parents choosing to publish a book of lies about their daughter's murder. Evidence and witnesses revealed that Valeen Schnurr was the victim who acknowledged her belief in God, not Cassie. In addition to publishing a bestseller with a debunked title (She Said Yes), Misty Bernall took sabbatical from her job at Lockheed Martin to pen a dishonest book. Lockheed Martin is the local Denver bomb-making factory for the US government (so-called). Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, Ted Kaczynski, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold represent the White, private citizen "bomber man." #MakeMyDay #BomberMan #WhatDoesItMeanToBeWhite #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Peter Langman. A sought-after expert on the psychology of school shooters and other perpetrators of mass violence, Dr. Langman “conducts trainings on understanding the psychology of school shooters and identifying potential school shooters for professionals in mental health, education, and law enforcement. He has spoken on preventing school shootings at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, and been hired by Homeland Security to train professionals in school safety. He is also a researcher with the National Threat Assessment Center of the United States Secret Service.” He's written a plethora of reports on the last quarter century of school-based mass shootings. Since the Katherine Massey Book Club continues to examine Dave Cullen's COLUMBINE, we thought it would be great to speak with another expert on these events. Dr. Langman authored Why Kids Kill: Inside the Minds of School Shooters, which examines both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold and other school shooters. He also penned: School Shooters: Understanding High School, College and Adult Perpetrators. THE POX and PUSS PODCAST : An Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker Experience
We are only a few days away from celebrating the Pox & Puss Podcast's 10th anniversary. So, in honor of that day, we bring you b-b-b-b-bonus content from In The Pines, where Pox talks about his 1998 thru-hike and the cast of fugitives and bandits he met along the way. During the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA, Eric Rudolph detonated a 100lbs pipe bomb in Centennial Park. One person was killed and 111 were injured. Three more bombs went off in the weeks and months following the Olympic bombing. What took place after that was an all-out manhunt along the Appalachian Trail and in the Nantahala Gorge. The FBI was looking for Rudolph as far away as the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Pox Holiday was thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1998, around the same time Eric Rudolph disappeared into the mountains for almost 7 years. Pox was even questioned by a member of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park because he looked like a fugitive. In this episode, you will hear untold stories about the search for a domestic terrorist and his accomplices that never made it into a newspaper article or a television report. _____________________________________________________________ Sources https://www.fbi.gov/history/famous-cases/eric-rudolph https://www.smokymountainnews.com/news/item/27038-2003-the-end-of-eric-rudolph-s-run https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Rudolph https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_Olympic_Park_bombing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nantahala_School https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocoee_Whitewater_Center https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kaczynski#Incarceration https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Jewell https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/rudolph/bio.htm https://www.blueridgeoutdoors.com/features/the-hunt-for-eric-rudolph/ https://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/fbi-probes-unabomber-connection-tylenol-killings/story?id=13638602 https://www.ourmidland.com/news/article/Eric-Rudolph-Timeline-7106329.php https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna7398701 https://history.capitolbroadcasting.com/media-assets/into-these-hills-documentary-about-the-hunt-for-eric-rudolph/ https://www.police1.com/police-heroes/articles/former-security-guard-richard-jewell-memorialized-a-hero-ivkeQ57uGKNAQuVw/ https://baxterstatepark.org/general-info/ https://www.operationmilitarykids.org/types-of-military-discharge/
Irv Brandt's evolution from a Navy torpedo man to law enforcement was an awkward transition but it worked out. Irv served with the US Marshal Service for more than 20 years. After leaving the Navy, he went to college to study business. After Black Monday no one was hiring business majors, but there were lots of opportunities in Law Enforcement. “I went into law enforcement and it turns out I was really good at it.” As a member of the Atlanta Police Department, Irv was assigned to Centennial Park during the Olympics. He was fifty feet away from the bomb detonated in the park by Eric Rudolph. “I've been shot at, I've been stabbed, but nothing is more terrifying than a bomb. It's amazing to me that I wasn't hit”. Irv tested for a position with all the Federal Agencies and was waiting for a DEA academy class when the Marshal Service called. The Marshal's academy began earlier so Irv jumped at the chance. We discuss one of Irv's cases that was featured on America's Most Wanted; Jodie Thompson. Thompson escaped from prison and was on the run for more than three months. Victims said Thompson could open a gambling machine quicker with a crowbar than staff could with keys. “He was one of the coolest persons under pressure I have ever seen. I had him at gunpoint and he smiled at me.” Irv spent much of his career working international cases. The US Marshals conduct ALL international extraditions for local to federal agencies. He used to charter jets and bring home cartel members a dozen at a time. Irv says the most satisfying arrests were sex offenders because they will keep offending and leave a wake of misery if they are not caught. Since retiring, Irv has become the author of the Jack Solo thriller series. TAKEAWAY: “Once a warrant is issued, the US Marshal service WILL CONTINUE looking for you until you are arrested or dead."

In this special episode of the CAFE Insider podcast, Joyce Vance interviews Jim Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh, a prominent voice in law enforcement, has extensive experience investigating domestic terrorism and white supremacist violence — threats that the FBI has said are on the rise. He spent over 33 years working at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, where he eventually led the Birmingham and Nashville offices as Special Agent in Charge. In this sample from the show, Cavanaugh breaks down the failed law enforcement response to the Uvalde school shooting and explains the capabilities of the AR-15, the gun used in the massacre. In the full episode, Cavanuagh discusses: – The negotiations with cult leader David Koresh during the Waco siege in 1993; – The investigation into the bombing murder of Joyce's father-in-law, Eleventh Circuit Judge Robert Vance; – The investigation into the Eric Rudolph bombings, which included attacks at an abortion clinic in Alabama and the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta; and – Law enforcement's approach towards domestic terrorism and white supremacist violence. A little before 1 AM on the morning of July 27, 1996, Eric Rudolph dropped his green backpack underneath a bench in Atlanta, Georgia's crowded Olympic Centennial Park, set the bomb's timer for 55 minutes, and walked away. Before morning, two people would be dead and 111 would be injured — and within a week, the security guard who first spotted the bag and saved countless lives would be accused of planting the bomb himself. In this episode, we cover the Olympic park bombing of 1996, as well as the bombings Eric Rudolph perpetrated until he went into hiding for five years in the North Carolina mountains. But first, Zoey tells some extremely corny ghost jokes in this week's Something Spooky.Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2022/03/29/the-bomber-in-the-mountains/
Eric Rudolph. On July 27, 1996, the world sat shocked to its core as a crudely made pipe bomb exploded in the middle of the crowded Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta Georgia. 2 people were killed and over 100 people were injured. A bomb exploding in a park is terrorizing enough, but the timing of this bomb, One week into the 96 Summer Olympic games seemed to violate the Olympic spirit. It would take the FBI nearly 7 years to capture the Olympic bomber, and before his capture 3 more bombs would take the lives of 2 more people and injuring many others. for details, show notes, and pictures please visit Thearchivistpodcast.comSources for this episode: FBI.govBomb sears nation's soul by Andrew Martin and Karen Brandon (Chicago Tribune, July 28, 1996)‘Hero' guard a suspect (News Journal, Mansfield OH July 31, 1996)Olympic bombing suspect becoming more optimistic by Mitchell Lansberg (The Anniston Star, Anniston Alabama, August 2, 1996)Olympic bombing probe plods along. Eric Rudolph was on the FBI's top ten most wanted criminals for years. He unleashed a bombing campaign across Georgia and Alabama killing and injuring hundreds. His most known terrorist attack occurred at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Rudolph's right-wing conspiracies included one world government plots, UN takeover of the US, anti-feminism, anti-LGBTQ, racism but most of all anti-Marxist beliefs. He targeted the Olympics as a symbol of globalism and socialism. The murder of Gabby Petito, and the ensuing search for her boyfriend/ person of interest Brian Laundrie has captivated the entire country. But to get a closer look into the FBI's case, as well as the recent discovery of remains believed to be that of Laundrie, it's always best to talk to someone who knows more than a little about the process, which is why we talked to former FBI Assistant Director, Chris Swecker. Swecker served in the FBI for 24 years. He served as the FBI's on-scene Commander in Iraq, and later served as Special Agent in Charge of North Carolina Operations, where he managed the capture of the Eric Rudolph after the Centenial Olympic Park bombing, and dismantling a Hezbollah terrorist cell. He's also appeared on CNN, CNBC and Fox News....and this morning he talked to us. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Eric Rudolph was a wanted serial bomber being hunted by the FBI when he vanished into the woods of North Carolina. Five years later, an everyday police officer caught him behind a local store. He claims he lived in the nearby woods, but not everyone believes that is true. Some people think that there is more to this story.
This episode Eric, Kristian and Sam look into the story of Eric Rudolph, also known as the Olympic Park Bomber, convicted for a series of bombings across the southern states between 1996 and 1998 and the manhunt that ensued landing him on the FBI's most wanted list.

This week on Hashtag History, we are discussing the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park Bombing, an absolutely tragic incident in which a pipe bomb was placed at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Georgia during the Summer Olympics that would take the life of one person and injure another 111. This bomb was placed by Eric Rudolph, an American terrorist, who would go on to plant three more bombs over the course of the next two years. Perhaps one of the worst things to come from the Centennial Olympic Bombing though is that the blame would be placed on the wrong man. Jewell would be investigated by the FBI and publicly blamed for the bombing - socially ridiculed and isolated - for several months before the FBI shifted their focus to Rudolph. In this season finale, we track him down to find out what happened to the soft-spoken North Carolinian who brought in a notorious fugitive. As a young boy, I remember my dad taking me camping in the Nantahala Forest in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Now if you’re a rugged Colorado adventurer, you might turn your nose up at our itinerary for the weekend, but to me this was adventure. A weekend with my dad in the woods. I’d get to ask him life’s questions, we’d share some holy moments, and he’d share his heart, and maybe I’d share mine. We would make a couple meals over a fire, camp under the night sky, and then in the morning, brave the class 2 rapids of the Nantahala River, in our own personal rafts called "duckies." As it turns out however, we were not the only ones spending the night in the Nantahala Forest that weekend. Word had made its way around the camp that it was very likely that an out-of-town guest had also decided to make camp in those woods that night. Eric Rudolph, top ten on the FBI’s Most Wanted, the Olympic Park Bomber, who, as time would tell, would last for the next five years hiding out in the Kudzu-laden forests of the Nantahala, had made camp somewhere near ours. Now I was twelve years old. This was no measurable threat. I owned a Swiss army knife and knew how to whittle. I was not fine. I was afraid. I didn’t deserve this! I wondered why God and my dad had brought me to the woods to meet my demise. I slept with both eyes open and I needed the sun to come up a little sooner than was planned for the next day. I wanted to get the heck out of that camp, get in that raft, paddle as fast as I could, and get to where we were going. And looking back, I think I missed out on some holy moments with my dad. I wonder what life would’ve been like as a young Levite boy, traveling with the Israelites in the desert on the way to the Promised Land. They were camping out. If you have a Bible today you can turn with me to the book of Numbers 9:15. And as we jump into this journey with the Israelites today I was reminded of a quote from one of my favorite pastors, Mark Dever, of Capitol Hill Baptist in Washington, DC. --- "The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed." In another book he wrote: "The New Testament is the Old Testament revealed." Whether that saying is original to him or not, I don't know, but I know that he's echoing the words of Paul in Romans 15:4 -- For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope...
In the months that follow the deadly bombing at the1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, more bombing attacks occur in the Atlanta area, but investigators are no closer to finding the culprit. Then in January 1998, another deadly bombing, this time in Birmingham, Alabama, yields evidence that reveals the identity of the suspect…and the race in on to capture Eric Robert Rudolph. The problem is, Rudolph is hiding in the rugged mountain terrain of North Carolina …an area he knows much better than those searching for him. And that’s where the man who is now one of the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” plans his next bombing attack…aimed directly at his enemies.

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk about one of the most famous cases of domestic terrorism in the USA: the 1996 Olympic Bombing. The date was July 27, and the concert in the Centennial Olympic Park was going full speed. Then, just before midnight, a call came in to police saying a bomb was going to detonate in the concert in a half hour. Eighteen minutes later, the triple pipe bomb exploded. One person was killed, and over 100 were wounded. However, the damage was not as bad as it could have been in the Olympic Bombing. A security guard named Richard Jewell found the bomb, called several law enforcement agencies, and got people evacuated. They say without his swift action, many more deaths would have happened that night. He was repaid for his heroism by being the primary suspect in the FBI investigation! Meanwhile, the real bomber, Eric Rudolph got away and planed several more bombings. He blew up two abortion clinics and a lesbian bar, killing one more and injuring others. Why did he do all this? Well for one, he was a wackadoo. He was part of a "Christian Identity" movement that reinterprets the Bible in line with their white power teaching. Second, he wrote rambling letters blaming abortion, the US Government, and the homosexual agenda for ruining the world. Solution? Blow up an Olympic after party? Good call. The really interesting part of this was that after he was identified as the architect of all four bombings, he evaded law enforcement for years by living the rough Appalachian Mountains on his own in full survival mode. The FBI kept pressure on him with regular patrols because they figured it would keep it on the run and unable to bomb again. They were right. When Rudolph was busted doing a dumpster dive for food, he confessed to several caches of dynamite (250 pounds!) near where the FBI was headquartered. If you’re into true crime, survivalism, White Power lunatics, and the madness that was the 1990s, this one is for you! Oh, and did I mention that his gay brother cut off his own hand with a radial saw to prove a point to the FBI? FBI Statement on The Bomber: https://www.fbi.gov/history/famous-cases/eric-rudolph

Wade US Supreme Court decision in 1973, and the role abortion as a political issue played in the formation of the Religious Right. Jaye also reacts to the tendency of the pro-life movement to co-opt equality movements for their own purposes. In addition, alternatives and solutions that would lower abortion rates are presented. Does everyone have to use the term "radical Islam" when describing the terrorists who attacked Paris, or any other ISIS or al-Qaeda attack? A Muslim, 10 At 10 co-host Abdul-Hakim Shabazz, says no. After all, we didn't refer to bombers Eric Rudolph and Timothy McVeigh as "radical Christians."
