If the Department of Transportation has its way, more than 30 percent of jeepneys will be off the road starting this year. Those are the vehicles that private operators did not include in new jeepney cooperatives and corporations required by the DOTr. That will be the first stage of the government's controversial jeepney modernization program. The older, decrepit vehicles will then be replaced by newer models, some no longer resembling the iconic back-entry designs of the traditional jeepney. Modernization is more than new vehicles, Transportation Secretary Bautista is quick to emphasize in his conversation with Howie Severino. Public transport routes will be studied and “rationalized,” so that the number of public utility vehicles will be adjusted according to the volume of commuters along those routes. Despite the reduction of jeepneys plying existing routes, Bautista assures that there will be no commuter crisis, as he says the remaining jeepneys will be more than enough to handle the demand. Even with the modern jeepneys, Bautista asserts that the future of public transport lies not in road vehicles but in trains, as he gives us an overview of the rail projects in the pipeline. Isn't it a disadvantage for chauffeur-driven officials like him to be making decisions about public transport? Secretary Bautista has a ready answer.

What’s up over here? We’re still giving too much headspace to Instagram...but our perspectives are shifting. And we’re also eating some of our very best meals of quar, thanks to Vanessa and Kim Pham, the sisters behind Omsom and its outrageously good Vietnamese, Thai, and Filipino sauces. Dig in? The linkage: Andrea Whittle wrote about whether the protests will change IG for W mag. Whoa, did this @_nanders post get the wheels turning about the WHY of sharing content that’s getting shared a lot. We always love Mary H.K. Choi, and this ep of her Hey, Cool Life! pod about optics and allyship really landed. Another shout-out for 15 Percent Pledge! We are obsessed with Kim and Vanessa Pham’s Omsom sauces, made in collaboration with the NYC restaurants Fish Cheeks, Jeepney, and Madame Vo. Nicole Ponseca is the restaurateur and co-owner of the Filipino restaurants Maharlika and Jeepney in the East Village in NYC as well as the author of the 2019 James Beard Award Finalist cookbook, I Am A Filipino. A former advertising executive turned restaurateur, Nicole's coming-of-age story is familiar perhaps to other Filipino-Americans having been born to a military dad and nurse mom. Moving to New York with $75 to her name and to advance her career in advertising, she soon realized her calling to represent her Filipino heritage and culture. While working in advertising, she moonlighted as a dishwasher, busser, runner, and server. A childhood memory of shame in watching her father eat with his bare hands would only later become the saving grace for her restaurant Jeepney which opened during Hurricane Sandy. This episode delves into the origin stories of both restaurants as well as tackling self-identity in relation to restaurant entrepreneurship.
This is a funny, brutally honest conversation with writer Rafe Bartholomew (Twitter: @Rafeboogs). He's edited for Grantland, written for The Athletic and authored several books including Pacific Rims and Basketball: a Love Story Originally, our conversation was intended to focus solely on the Philippines and basketball there, but with the controversy swirling around Hong Kong, China and the NBA we dialogued about these issues as well. The first part of our chat is mostly about Hong Kong & the NBA, the rest is about the Philippines, but it's all worth listening to. In an era of "sports-shouting" and where honesty can destroy your career, Rafe is a unique figure. Our discussions about he legends and real history of basketball in the Philippines is some of the best storytelling I've captured on this podcast, and I think you'll find he's a brave voice in discussing the NBA and its responsibility to social justice. So hop in your Jeepney, it's time for Pacific Rims! After listening you can find out more about Rafe at his website: http://www.rafebartholomew.com/ His book on Philippines Hoops is here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/306146/pacific-rims-by-rafe-bartholomew/ Now out on paperback, Basketball: A Love Story is here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/558131/basketball-by-jackie-macmullan-rafe-bartholomew-dan-klores/ And check him out at the Athletic here: https://theathletic.com/author/rafe-bartholomew/

Zerothreetwo Conversations: Interviews with the Creative Class
One of my personal joys of this podcast is to reconnect with old friends and learn more about what they went through in their craft as well as their life. I first met Boots Brandon Pajaganas years ago. He used to invite our band, Rescue a Hero, to play music for skate events. Back in the day, I remember talking to Boots about his experience skating around Cebu. It's been a while since I last saw Boots, but I was updated on his goingons through Facebook and Instagram. In the past four years, Boots made a name for himself as a tattoo artist. I remember seeing posts of him winning tattoo competitions, getting tons of clients, and finally tattooing celebrities like Angelica Panganiban and Kitchie Nadal. He was a no brainer for the podcast. Here was another creative doing well in a creative industry. Little did I know, Boots has a really good story to tell. He is an example of what I'm hoping to see more in Cebu. Before he became a well known tattoo artist, he started with very little. At some point, he even got a short job conducting a jeepney just to make ends meet. This is a real story of starting from the bottom to fulfilling a dream. In this episode, we talked about his journey of becoming a tattoo artist, the challenges and tribulations he experienced that changed his world view, the blessings he has received that were uncovered through those challenges, and the importance of giving back to the community. ShEvo vs. The First World | A Skeptical Look at Western Culture
Out of all the natural disasters we’ve survived (fire, flood, earthquake, tornado…) coming through unscathed through a typhoon in The Philippines was of the more mild. Though it did lead us to some really stupid choices. I’m pretty sure the “l” in Manila is silent. We recorded this episode of our travel comedy podcast at the tail-end of a 14-day trip to The Philippines. We had many experiences worth of sharing, most of which we’ve shoved into this episode. Listen in as Evo tries to talk about the lovely island of Palawan. But Sheila won’t let him. You’ve probably heard about the terrible traffic in Manila. It’s every bit as bad as people say, so prepare yourself. If you can, we highly recommend taking a Jeepney as part of your public transportation. Not because these stretched Jeeps decked with more chrome than any cholo’s hoopty in L.A. are faster than walking, mind you. But it’s hot out there, and you need to experience some local color. Because of the traffic and the typhoon, we didn’t get out all that much when we were in Manila. But we really didn’t care, because the fine folks at (http://www.sofitelmanila.com/) ) was a welcome sight for two weary travelers from lactose-intolerant Bangkok. If you see us and it seems we’ve put on a few pounds, we’ll thank you for keeping it to yourself. When we did brave the traffic, it was to either a) battle with the Royal Thai embassy or b) deal with dental emergencies. The first is a story of needless bureaucracy (why the hell don’t all embassies for the same country follow the same rules?) and the second one a gentle reminder that sushi shouldn’t have hard things in it, so check before swallowing. You’ll also hear us rave about (https://travelmassive.com/) was the clear winner. For evidence of that, expect a few dozen videos from her over the next… forever. After that, those with delicate senses might want to end this episode early. Because the next part is a little… blue. First there was Michelle, the overly aggressive prostitute. Then there was the beer drinking contest that Evo won (of course.). Which led to a visit to a sporting establishment (of sorts) that Evo’s still rather conflicted about. However, there’s too much photographic evidence to deny it happened. No, we’re not posting links. We are, however, laying the blame squarely at Anton’s feet, since he sanctioned the event. That may not give Evo the salvation he’s looking for, but it makes him feel slightly better. Though we’re significantly poorer in the pocketbook after the experience. Because apparently it costs money to referee a little people boxing match? You could help us recoup some of those dollars by (http://shevo.wtf/postcards) and we’ll get one in the mail to you right away! Music for our show is graciously provided by the fantastic band Velella Velella. They make killer tunes, and you should buy all of their stuff. It’s fabulous! Want more ShEvo in your life? Well… you’ve got options. (http://shevo.wtf) for links to your preferred listening post. We’ve quite a few!

Colin Marshall sits down in North Hollywood with Carren Jao, Manila- and Los Angeles-based writer on architecture, art, and design. They discuss what rain does to the aesthetic of Los Angeles; the role of the river here as the connection people don't realize they have; the difference between the floods Los Angeles used to routinely endure and the ones Manila routinely endures now; how, growing up in the Philippines, she got interested in the shape and form of cities; Manila's "improvisational" nature not centered around always having functioning systems; the Filipino inclination to make guests' lives easier in any way possible; her entry into the United States, but not the one that "everyone knows"; public transit as amusement-park ride; the important role of the Jeepney in Manila's transportation; her life in the San Fernando Valley, very much a place distinct from Los Angeles itself; how writing has forced her to explore this city and its environs, including still-developing ones like Pacoima's "mural mile"; how to get the wide-openness of the Los Angeles experience across to friends, family, and readers; the "third-world" contrasts of nice homes next to squatters' villages in Manila and the Arts District next to Skid Row in Los Angeles; the boom in interest related to architecture, design, and space-making, and the importance of leaving openings for people to construct their own environments; what she'd look at first after five years away from Los Angeles, and from Manila; this city's long-confused relationship with its water; what the Philippines have learned from other countries; what America could learn from the Asian sense of accommodation; what she learns from having to attend neighborhood council meetings; how fast word and social knowledge travel in Manila, how slow they can travel in Los Angeles, and how both have their advantages.
Penelope Flores discusses her book, "Phiippine Jeepney: A Filipino Family Metaphor" at the 2011 Filipino American History Month Celebration at the Asian Art Museum.
