ONE SIMPLE WORD IS A JOB KILLER A simple bill about plumbing got high jacked by special interests to change on word and it killed businesses. Peter Boddie is sounding the alarm while he runs for Colorado House District 28 to unseat the person who put lots of people and small businesses out of work in what he calls the The Big Backflow Blunder, which you can read about here. He joins me at 12:30 to discuss.
Wharton's Valery Yakubovich isn't worried about generative AI putting people out of work. He says the technology has a long way to go before it won't require intensive human oversight. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
If you've heard the phrase "raising wages kills jobs," you've heard the latest in a long line of lies from the rich designed to masquerade self-serving policies in pro-social language. Nick Hanauer debunks six such lies: Denial, The Free Market Knows Best, It's Your Fault Not Mine, It's a Job Killer, You'll Only Make It Worse, and It's Socialism. Nick and Andrew talk about the fight for a $15 minimum wage, the real reason we have a federal deficit, and a new school of economics called Market Humanism. Every year in Arizona, legislators introduce hundreds of bills, most of which are never enacted. This year, the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry (“Arizona Chamber”) identified 67 “Job Killer” bills which would have imposed substantial new taxes, costs, or administrative burdens on Arizona businesses. Ultimately, none of these bills were enacted, and the story has been similar for years. But this raises the question: what would happen to the state's economy and business environment were some or even all these bills ultimately passed into law? CSI Arizona has utilized the experience and research of our partners in Colorado to estimate the potential impacts on Arizona's economic prospects of enacting some of the many policy ideas on this list. Bills like those studied here are being shopped at state legislature across the country, and many of them have been introduced annually at the Arizona Legislature. Though they have not moved in the past, the lesson of Colorado's anti-business policy transformation over the past half decade shows that climates can change quickly. Our full report can be found here. Our Executive Director and Guest Host Katie Ratlief welcomes Danny Seiden, President and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and Courtney Coolidge, Vice President of Government Affairs, to the show to discuss the report, the job killers, and the past present and future of Arizona's economy. Thank you for listening to Common Sense Digest. Please rate, review, and subscribe on your favorite podcatcher. All of our podcasts can be found here. Danny Seiden is President and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Danny brings more than 16 years of experience in global public affairs and government relations, as well as handling complex legal matters in private practice and public sector service. Prior to joining the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Danny was general counsel to the Valor Global leadership team. He focused on helping achieve growth objectives as well as providing continued public affairs guidance in AZ, WA and other States. Courtney Coolidge serves as the Vice President for Government Affairs at the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Prior to joining the Chamber, Courtney served as the Senior Director for State Relations at Arizona State University and the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Arizona Department of Public Safety where she oversaw legislative affairs, government relations, policy development and implementation. During her time at AZDPS she worked on several significant projects including the Arizona Border Strike Force, self-driving vehicle operations, and management of the Arizona Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit Task Force.

The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Prominent Canadian conductor and artistic director Boris Brott has been killed in an alleged hit-and-run in Hamilton, Ont. on Tuesday. Tributes began pouring in after Brott was identified as the victim fatally struck in the initial collision. Brott was 78 and according to the OCM, leaves behind his wife, Ardyth, and three children Ben, Alexandra, and David. GUEST: Lou Molinaro, Instructor at the Harris Institute for Music, Longtime Hamilton Music Promoter - What's the relationship between Concussions and the risk of delayed neurodegenerative disease ie AD, PD and of course CTE. Dr. Carmela Tartaglia joins the Bill Kelly show to discuss that and more. GUEST: Dr. Carmela Tartaglia, Marion and Gerald Soloway Chair in Brain Injury and Concussion Research and Co-director of the Memory Clinic with Toronto Western Hospital - Ontario's move in 2018 to raise the minimum wage reduced the racialized wage gap, particularly for women, amid rising employment, according to a new study from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). When the $14-per-hour minimum wage was implemented in 2018, business lobbyists made dire predictions that it would lead to massive job losses. That simply didn't happen. In fact, far from being a “job-killer,” wages grew in Ontario while total employment increased by 1.7 per cent in 2018 and by 2.8 per cent in 2019, according to the new report. ALSO: Ontario promises October minimum wage increase to $15.50 GUEST: Sheila Block, Senior Economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"It's the best framework that we, in labor, have seen in a very long time for advancing workers’ rights. It sets a federal jobs guarantee for people who want to go to work fighting the climate crisis, and it also provides for what they call living wages, or family-supporting wages, in that jobs guarantee."
In week 4 of our Halloween movie month the boys decided to stay super relevant with the 2018 Halloween hype and discuss the only movie in the 11 film franchise that doesn’t involve Michael Myers, 1982’s Halloween III: Season of the Witch. There’s no need to watch this movie ahead of time because the boys did, and they still have no idea of what really happened. So join in on their confusion, and scratch your head along with the guys as they ask: How can “The largest Halloween mask company in the world” only sell 3 masks? Why are woman attracted to Dr Dan? Is Dr Dan so drunk that he thinks he is also a detective? Does Ellie have a thing against the Irish? Where is Michael Myers? Also stay around for the biggest plot-hole in this entire movie…hint it has to do with time zones. We’ve got plenty to cover, including the Get a Job Killer’s spreadsheet of neat facts, so make sure you have your Silver Shamrock masks on for the special giveaway at the end of the episode! Bob Epstein, Founder, Environmental Entrepreneurs Nancy Floyd, Manging Director, Nth Power Jack Stewart, President, California Manufacturers Tom Tanton, President, T2 & Associates Greg Dalton, Climate One - Moderator The night before an election that would decide the fate of California’s landmark climate change law, a panel of energy experts convened by Climate One debates whether AB 32 would catalyze or cripple the state’s economy. The measure before voters, Proposition 23, would suspend AB 32 until California achieves four consecutive quarters of unemployment below 5.5%. Jack Stewart, President, California Manufacturers and Technology Association, and Tom Tanton, President, T2 & Associates, argue that with California suffering 12.4% unemployment, now is not the time to burden business with additional regulation. “There’s a lot of pain and very little gain,” in pushing ahead with the law, Tanton says. Stewart agrees: “Do we want to go forward and have a growing economy and hold off on AB 32,” he asks, “or do we hobble the California economy and make it more difficult to employ the 2.3 million Californians who are out of work?” Nancy Floyd, Founder and Managing Director, Nth Power, and Bob Epstein, Founder, Environmental Entrepreneurs, counter that cleantech is the fastest growing job sector in California and critical to maintaining the state’s competitive edge globally. Floyd says that 500,000 green jobs have already been created in California, and that her venture firm alone had invested $200 million in 35 companies in the state. Epstein takes issue with claims by Stewart and Tanton that California’s climate change rules would subject the state’s businesses to onerous regulations and uncertainty. “This legislation lays out a 10-year plan. For an oil company, they tell you every place you need to be for 10 years.” Win or lose on Nov. 2, Epstein says the fight over Prop 23 has succeeded in mobilizing interests – environmentalists, venture capitalists, utilities, and tech firms – with a stake in the green economy. “What you have done, by bringing Prop 23 to the table, is you united a community that really needed to be united,” he says. In these tough economic times, California needs a leader that will bring jobs to the state, not ship them overseas because the labor is cheaper.
