How is Zambia dealing with lead contamination?

“It has made nearly every person, every mother, to have their child contaminated, because the lead levels are so rampant,” says Cornelius Katiti, a father from Kabwe, Zambia, whose three children are affected by lead poisoning. For decades, the town has struggled with remediating 6.4 million tonnes of toxic lead waste left behind by a former mine. A Human Rights Watch report shows 95% of children in Kabwe have dangerously high lead levels. Cornelius, along with many others in the community, is left asking: who is responsible for the clean-up? In today's episode, Alan Kasujja explores the ongoing environmental and health impacts of mining with Cornelius, an environmental chemist , and an environmental consultant.

Oliver grew up in Kabwe, one of the most toxic towns in the world. His mom wouldn't even let him play outside because the land, wind, and air are so heavily polluted from nearly a century of lead mining. Now 18, Oliver sees a new wave of mining sweeping across Zambia. This time, mining companies want to extract minerals for the clean energy boom. Oliver faces a choice: fight the industry as an activist, or join it to change it from within?

For all the women entering their third act in life, I have a message for you. Life does not have to be drab or monotonous. In fact it can be fabulously amazing. Meet Suzette who is taking the world by storm on her own terms. She even found love in this season. Goes to show, that can be you.  Let's talk about it.   ******************************** Suzette Vearnon is redefining her 60s on her own terms. Throwing away the handbook on ageism, retirement and what is "acceptable" in her 3rd act of life, this defier of boxes is writing her own script, choosing to go where joy leads her and trusting that her next will blow her mind. Coach Suzette, as she has lovingly been called for decades, has traded the demands of hustle and grind entrepreneurship - chasing success as the business owner of both a life and relationship solutions coaching business and an administrative/bookkeeping business - to bringing her passion for shared joy to the digital space as the self titled Chief Instigator of Captured Special Moments with some life and relationship lessons in between. If you asked Suzette what's next, she'd tell you she doesn't know. Are you part of a group or community of women who help and support each other? What impact have they had on your life? In today's episode, we talk about the lessons we've learned in sisterhood. I have the pleasure of discussing this topic with Kabwe Yambayamba. Kabwe is a lover of Jesus, project lead in the Bloomers Community, and Co-founder of Genius Zambia. Our story is one written by God Himself and I am so grateful we get to share our lessons with you all today Here's what to expect from today's episode: How to rebuke our sisters with love. How to heal from broken friendships. How to allow ourselves to be rebuked by the Holy Spirit in our friendships. How to assess ourselves in order to be more loving with ourselves and others. Things to focus on to grow and nurture healthy friendships/sisterhood. God wants us to be connected and have healthy friendships. Here are some verses we can reflect on: Romans 12:10: “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above      yourselves.” Proverbs 17:17: “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” Grab your beverage of choice, get comfy, and enjoy the conversation!

JSE-listed diversified miner Anglo American South Africa has noted a class action lawsuit filed against it by Mbuyisa Moleele Attorneys and Leigh Day in the Gauteng High Court, related to lead poisoning claims stemming from the Kabwe mine, in Zambia. The lawyers filed the lawsuit on behalf of a class estimated to comprise more than 100 000 individuals in the Kabwe district of Zambia. The claimants believe they have been exposed to lead contamination. The claimants, which include young children, are reportedly suffering from alarming levels of lead poisoning, which can cause a range of psychological and intellectual conditions, as well as damage to bodily organs, neurological systems and fertility. In extreme cases, lead poisoning can lead to serious brain damage and death. For conceiving women, lead is known to result in the unborn child being subjected to the same concentration of lead as the mother and can hold various risks to the foetus and the mother. A press release issued by the law firms alleges that generations of children have been poisoned by the operations of the Kabwe mine, originally called Broken Hill, which they also say has caused widespread contamination of soil, dust, water and vegetation in the area. The main sources of this poisonous lead were from the mine’s smelter, ore processing operation and tailings dumps, the firms state. The lawyers say the Kabwe mine was part of the Anglo American South Africa group from 1925 until 1974 and was one of the world’s most productive lead mines during this time. In response to Mining Weekly, Anglo American South Africa says it was one of a number of investors in the company that owned the Kabwe mine until the early 1970s and was, at all times, far from being a majority owner. In 1974, the company that owned the mine was nationalised by the Zambian government. It was then managed by a Zambian State-owned mining company up to 1994 when the mine was closed down. The lawyers believe Anglo is liable for damages in that it had a role in controlling, managing, supervising and advising on the technical, medical and safety aspects of the mine’s operations. The lawyers claim that substantial emissions of lead into the local environment were owing to deficiencies in the design and systems of operation and control of lead. They also believe that Anglo failed to ensure the clean-up of the communities’ contaminated land. The lawyers cite experts who claim that about two-thirds of the lead currently in the Kabwe environment is likely to have been deposited there between 1925 and 1974 when Anglo American South Africa owned a stake in the mine’s controlling company. Anglo says it will review the claims made and will take all necessary steps to vigorously defend its position in the matter.

This is the first episode of a two-part conversation featuring the High Leverage Practice of Connection with Martha King. From being a “barefoot connector” in South Korea for the Peace Corp to working with legislators from all over the country with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), Martha epitomizes the practice of connection. She reflects how authentic connections are built on the foundation of where we have come sharing “The way we connect depends on how we were raised, what our opportunities were and what kind of culture we were brought up in.” Martha’s life journey is fascinating and exemplifies how women’s influential power grows when respectful connections are built by bringing the real you to the party!Martha King just returned from almost a year as a U.S. Peace Corps “Response” Volunteer in Kabwe, Zambia. GREETINGS FROM MARGATE!Welcome to episode 15 of Buddy’s Buddies! A VERY special edition at that - this is part 1 of the ‘Margate Voices’ series, which is a collabo between myself and the Margate Mercury!Lucy, the editor of Margate Mercury had an idea of a way to combine forces, whereby the format of the podcast would be the same as always but the guests would be in a somewhat different vein to usual. In this case, she had an idea of connecting me with this guy called Cyril - she gave me a few key details which sounded so fascinating, and we had a brief meet to see about fixing a time to record, and BOOM - the rest was mine, and now YOURS to find out!So what follows is a lovely chat which I was lucky to be a part of, detailing Cyril’s crazy journey from his life in Zambia (living in a town called ‘Broken Hill’ aka Kabwe), to his mechanic leanings and then to his journey to Margate, on a flight with a few quid in his pocket… The rest is yours to uncover, and I don’t want to give you all the details because it’s so much more rewarding to find out for yourself now isn’t it?! I really hope you like it - Cyril’s a lovely fellow and his cups of tea are immaculate, take it from me. I’ll get a few links up here too to give you some more points of reference. In the meantime though, please take some time to hear from Mister Cyril Wilfred Wilson!SEMI SPOILER THOUGH - this episode is released, somewhat co-incidentally, on the 4th anniversary of his liver transplant to the day. It felt significant.
