Simon Kirke of Bad Company Live on Game Changers With Vicki I was Live with Simon Kirke, co-founder of Free and Bad Company, two of the greatest rock bands in history. A huge lifelong fan, it was a thrill to sit down and hear how it all went down, including how Snuffy, a guitar player kinda close to my heart, ended up playing on Free's Heartbreaker. We heard about Simon's very humble beginnings with neither running water nor electricity, talk about building character, his transistor radio, listening to big bands, pre-Beatles, making his own drumsticks, and finding his way back to London from the countryside with a time limit to make it and joining Paul Kossoff's Black Cat Bones just under the wire. How they formed Free, All Right Now, the song that made them, and perhaps, destroyed them. The unrelenting touring, and then Kosoff's unrelenting drugs. How the band evolved before imploding. Ultimately, in part, morphing into Bad Company, one of the greatest straight-up rock bands of all time with Simon co-writing its anthem. He's the only member of the band to be in every lineup since its inception, including the band's last tour. We heard about them all. Thrilling! I so love Simon's solo effort, All Because of You, written for Maria, his wife of 6 years. Reminiscent of Roger Daltry for me, it's in heavy rotation in my kitchen. He's guested on recordings by Wilson Pickett, Jim Capaldi, and Ron Wood, and has toured with Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. The best with the best. We heard great stories about Chuck, Ringo, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Dave Mason, and of course, Kossoff and Rodgers. We talked at length about addiction––the drinking, the drugs, the debauchery, some great stories there, and recovery, tried more than once, and how it was too long ago for Kossoff. But, has gratefully stuck for Simon, who is doing much to give back. Simon works with Road Recovery, aiding teens to get and hopefully stay sober, is on the board of a Rehab facility, Right Turn, and is in the process of writing a Rock Opera about recovery with its CEO. Simon fears with Paul Rodgers' health issues, this is the end of Bad Company after 50 years. He's scored a few films and looks forward to a lot more of that in his future, mirroring another musician turned composer we know who's fared pretty well. They say, be careful meeting your heroes. No worries here. Simon Kirke exceeded all my very high (but sober) hopes, as a person and a rock star. What fun! Can't Get Enough! Bonham - Bullick InterviewIn this episode of the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast I am delighted to be joined by Deborah Bonham and Peter Bullick. In the interview they talk about their new album the current tour, growing up with John Bonham, Bad Company, Free and playing with Paul Rogers and lots more.Deborah Bonham has established herself as one of the finest blues, rock and soul singers the UK has produced. A string of critically acclaimed original album releases, captivating standing ovation concert performances at the Royal Albert Hall, London Palladium and on the USA Stars Align Tour with Paul Rodgers, Jeff Beck and Heart's Ann Wilson, have continually followed her while also garnering rave reviews. “Strong voiced, personable and quite the rock & roll singer. This woman, Deborah Bonham (the sister of the late Led Zeppelin drummer) earned a standing ovation at the end of her set, clearly a welcome addition to the tour.” (Stars Align Tour, Holmdel, New Jersey) – Elmore Magazine Belfast born guitarist Peter Bullick, lauded by the press for his passionate and exceptional playing, paid his dues playing clubs and theatres across the UK and Europe for many years. The constant touring allowed Peter to develop his own style while holding dear guitarist Rory Gallagher and others who were a big influence on his playing. Of all the guitarists that influenced Peter it was Paul Kossoff with whom he connected with the most. Years later Pete's playing would not go unnoticed by none other than Paul Rodgers who selected Pete and the rest of Deborah's band to back him on his Free Spirit concerts and tours of the UK and USA. “Guitarist Peter Bullick constantly showed why Paul Rodgers touted him as a replacement for Kossoff should Free ever reform. His bluesy but always economic fills and solos lit up the stage.” – Tight But LoosePhil Aston | Now Spinning Magazinehttps://www.nowspinning.co.uk

However, in this conversation, her and I connect as like-minded nomads living the RV Life.  We talk about the process of downsizing and how we've embraced the understanding that for this season of our lives, less is more. We've both come to appreciate that experiences are more important than things. However, we're also mindful of the fact that God has created each of us as individuals and we all have to come to grip with what is best for us in each stage of our lives.   To find out more about Amy, check out the work she does at the Institute for Social and Emotional Intelligence at www.isei.com.

Terry and Gideon along with Cameron Tonkinwise developed the building blocks of the initial Transition Design framework and integrated it into the CMU School of Design programs and curricula in 2014, including the Transition Design PhD program. This conversation was a round table with several of this podcast collaborators for this season: Silvana Juri, Marysol Ortega Pallanez, Erica Dorn, Sofía Bosch Gómez and Alex Polzin. In this round table we touched on topics such as how we conceive Transition Design today; in what ways it has evolved since its inception, including a look at the research, contexts and approaches of each of us as PhD researchers in the Transition Design program at Carnegie Mellon University. We also talked about those aspects that we see must be part of a transition designer. Finally, we asked Terry and Gideon what new ideas they are pursuing right now. As a business owner, wife, and mom of 7 kids (one on the autism spectrum) I get PLENTY of opportunities to mess things up. I have had my “go get ‘em” moments where I shine (for a moment) only to fall down a hill, burst into flames and drag myself back up the other side. I have had more than my fair share of life’s chaos. Some I had no control over and some I helped along. So how can I be successful in the midst of life’s chaos? I think the idea that someone reaches success is a unicorn. We are all constantly growing, and changing. What means success to us today isn't what it meant 20 years ago. The first step is defining how YOU define success. Here Comes the Diesel by Leon Kossoff feels like a fight. Viewers must battle our way through the choppy chaotic brambles to even see the title's train.Kossoff drives paint across the canvas like a barrage. It brings to mind the rush of a train, powering through forests and fields. They carry cargo and people across nations. Much like art does with ideas and feelings - trains deliver. There's no softness or sentimentality here or in any of Kossoff's work. Hardcore defines this artist. He's fond of familiar subject matter and paints it with vibrant, powerful strokes. We can feel his resolute realism. This man wields a brush like a weapon. Kossoff wars with us through time and across nations in his paintings. Some believe this work bouts with tech and that the train represents man-made machines. But it's the artist himself. He's the force behind this relentless image, after all. Here are some things that the legendary bodybuilder Bernarr Macfadden believed in: Fasting to cure cancer. Fasting to cure asthma. Fasting to cure – here’s an interesting one – emaciation. “I mean, there’s the old idea of starve a fever, feed a cold,” said Mark Adams, who wrote a book about Macfadden called Mr. America. “For Macfadden it was starve a fever, starve a cold, starve a sore throat, starve cancer, starve kleptomania.” The alternative medicine enthusiast shook up the health scene in the early 1900s with his magazine, “Physical Culture.”  He focused on exercise and cleanses and fasting, sometimes up to seven days, and brushed off modern medicine as “murderous science”. Macfadden’s ideas had a brief moment of popularity in the 20s and 30s but lost luster around World War II. Around the time penicillin started saving lives, alternative medicine – especially a starvation diet – didn’t seem as appealing a cure. MacFadden at work. (Library of Congress/Library of Congress) Almost a century later, updated and repackaged as the “ketogenic diet”, one of Macfadden’s starvation cures is making waves again. “We know it works,” said Eric Kossoff, a pediatric neurologist at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore.“There are lots of different theories about how it works.” The ketogenic diet is not the same as fasting – instead it’s an extremely high-fat, low-carbohydrate regimen that essentially tricks the body into thinking it’s starving. And the diet has made inroads into the medical community for treating epilepsy in children. While Macfadden spent the early 1900s treating virtually everything with a fast, a New York City endocrinologist noticed that some epileptic patients in particular were responding well to Macfadden’s treatment. The doctor presented the treatment to the American Medical Association around 1920 and helped bring fasting for seizures into the medical mainstream. MacFadden and his family. (Library of Congress/Library of Congress)  The ketogenic diet was eventually created to replicate the effects of fasting. Forcing the body to burn fat creates ketone bodies -- molecules also created while fasting. While it’s still unclear exactly why the diet works, switching the body’s fuel source from glucose to fat has been shown to reduce epileptic seizures for some patients. (Kossoff says he sees around a 50-percent response rate.) Bernarr Macfadden never broke down the science of ketosis when he talked about fasting, but his treatment -- and the diet he helped inspire -- went out of fashion as modern medicine developed into the 1940s. “No study really showed the diet not being effective anymore, but I think it got overshadowed by lots of new drugs,” Kossoff said. Macfadden himself could not be saved by fasting. At 87, he decided to treat a bout of jaundice with his go-to method. He was found unconscious and dehydrated in a Jersey City hotel room in 1955. Whatever the initial cause of the jaundice, Macfadden was too far gone, and died two days later in a hospital. But as a new crop of fasting diets – for both weight loss and disease – gains steam, his doesn’t seem so extreme. “I don’t know,” said author Mark Adams, “but my guess is just [Macfadden] was a combination of ahead of his time and completely nuts.”   Hey Only Human listeners, we're hoping to learn more about what you want to hear and how you listen to shows from WNYC Studios.
