2011. 2014. 2016. In a matter of nine years, the three major voice assistants—Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, and Google's Assistant—were released, reconstructing the ways we incorporate technology into our lives. Although Amazon leads in smart speaker market share and Google and Apple lead in monthly active users in total devices, other notable players such as Microsoft Cortana, Sonos, and Samsung Bixby present real challenges to the mainstream assistants. But even as the competition shakes up, consumers are faced with only a few choices for smart speakers and voice assistants. Phillip is a technology product designer. He’s played pivotal roles in consumer voice and multimodal applications at Amazon Alexa, Microsoft Cortana, and four start-ups. Phillip also led product design efforts for Amazon Web Services. In this episode, Phillip explains how Amazon innovates so successfully. Hello and thank you for tuning into this episode whether it is your first time or if you are listening yet again.  Thank you.  While this list of 16 things is not all inclusive, it does highlight some of the realities of our business/working life and our personal lives.  It’s all more blended than ever if you are still working and if you are not working right now – I am empathetic if you want to be working, but many in the list remains true! More Video! Business people are holding way more video meetings than before Coronavirus!  Not only more video meetings but video conversations.  Facetime one on ones, or one on twos!  This weekend I learned how to have 3 people on a Facetime and see all 3 of us on the same screen – Swipe left y’all!  It’s that easy.  But if you hit “more” in the bottom left, you can pull up your photos and put a photo backdrop behind you in the camera.  How cool is that!  It’s helping us feel more connected when we can see and hear our friends and loved ones.  And of course our colleagues at work – sometimes it’s just easier to communicate.  But, there’s a fine line – I come from this space having worked for Premiere Global, now PGi back in the day before web collaboration tools even existed.  We sold audio lines for $0.34 per line!  Then came out the web collaboration tools and we sold those licenses and trained business users how to hold excellent web meetings.  Well, human nature is such that not everyone wanted to be on camera.  The product team of iMeet – a tool invented by PGi in 2008 – allowed for attendees to create a avatar where they could put up after entering the meeting instead of their live camera.  OR they could put up a photo of their choice from their computer.  Cool huh?  So many of us during quarantine, we are looking a bit shabby at times, yes?  Some people wake, shower and dress up – make up, every day because that’s what they do.  But even so we are past due on our hair dresser, nail manacures, and hair is long or turning colors we are not confident in.  I talked last week about doing TOO many video meetings.  We need to give our people some breathing room during the day.  Deliveries not coming I ordered two things off eBay last week and was promised to receive them  one on Friday and one on Sunday.  One item was a Spin bike I paid hundreds of dollars for – the seller cancelled the order = still has my money and I have no idea when my refund will show up.  I’ve heard some people’s grocery deliveries they are having to schedule 6-7 days out and 2 days prior to their delivery day, their order is cancelled. Zoom Bombs So Zoom is the new Webex – or web collaboration tool.  Why I say that is because like Kleenex is to Tissue Webex was the brand name of the solution category.  2019 it became more popular to use Zoom.  Well, if you haven’t heard….a “photo bomb” is when someone or something living gets in the back of your photo without you being aware.  Zoom meeting hosts and attendees have - unbeknownst to them – had un-invited attendees who at some point in the meeting disrupt it.  They draw on presentations…..as written by Fortune, April 2nd, the trolls attempt to disrupt the video chat and upset participants by shouting profanity or racial slurs, or put up disturbing or offensive images in their video feed.  It’s a modern form of trolls.  These guys are hackers.  Since the determination that there were deficiencies in the security protocols on behalf of Zoom, the CEO, Eric Yuan,    has taken responsibility and apologized in this blog posted on April 1st.  Zoom declairs that they designed the platform primarily for “large institutions with full IT support” and that since Quarantine, the user base has expanded way beyond what they could have ever anticipated for.  Regardless, they are under scrutiny of the FBI and NY Attorney general having to answer questions from security experts about the levels of encryption and they have also been served two (2) class action law suits that a feature on their platform (which has since been deactivated) shared privacy data with Facebook. Zoom 101: Securing your Meetings & Virtual Classrooms Some schools and other companies are moving their virtual meetings while Zoom says in the next 90 days they will focus solely on security and not add any new features outside of Security. So, it’s a choice – move over onto something else or stick with Zoom.  I’m personally going to stick with Zoom.  I love the platform.  I’ll follow their guidelines as to how to keep my meetings secure.  One of the things is at this time encryption is not possible when you dial in from an external device like your mobile phone so I will be dialing in from my computer.  I’m happy that the CEO has taken accountability and so I’m going to stay on it and take the security measures that they advise. Tech Talk Boy there must be a ton of people out there who’s skillsets and talents exist not inside technology yet they are having to figure out their home band width, their virtual meeting equipment, kids school computer, website sources to access information….it goes on.  It must feel like another language at times. In my promo video for this episode posted on LinkedIn and some shorter video format duration on other social media I joked, And so the DS 2407 is not available, By adding a block of code at the top of your script called a param block, you can add a parameter to pass into the script.  We will see if Schisizm co can get one delivered to one of their guys houses and we’ll test and engage dept 222 for advanced third tier support. It’s a bunch of jargon but it was to laugh at the fact that sometimes those of us in segmented industries it’s almost impossible to understand sometimes! We need to be able to reach out to people who understand to help us.   Essential & Non Essential Businesses Things are changing so fast and depending on where you live, there are different categories of closures.  The State of Georgia, where I live, went from restricted to “stay at home order” or what I have been referring to as “lock down” last Friday April 2nd.  It’s a little bit confusing as to what is essential and what is not.  I saw a sign outside of new housing development and it said, “housing is an essential business but we are only taking scheduled appointments.  Call this number to schedule your appointment.”  My husband and I were talking about cleaning services. Are they essential we were pondering?  If you look up questions online it isn’t always in your face what is what.  Last night we decided to order food for either delivery or pick up…. Wine Text Do you know Gary Vanderchuk AKA, Gary Vee?  He’s famous in the digital marketing entrepreneur space.  His story if you don’t know him is that he grew up as a young man working for his dad’s liquor store and he brought his dads liquor store online and nobody back then thought it was possible to sell wine online and that nobody would research it or gain info about wine online and he took his father’s biz which I believe was struggling to some extent anyway to a multi million biz  because he took it online back in the day when the internet first came out way before we are today. and so he helped his dads wine co who I believe owns Wine Text – open up this new service – it’s called Wine Text -  it was back before Corona Virus hit. Every day they send you a text if you guys don’t have it – some of you may be using it and enjoying it.  But if you don’t have it every day you get the text, open it up and it has a video of a guy or woman behind a table talking about the featured wine of the day and the features of it.  You get the wine per bottle at a discount and they quantify the number of bottles you can order for a discount and you just text back and tell them how many bottles of wine you want and they tell you how much the shipping will be and you you’re a min. you get free shipping depending on the number of minimum bottles, 6 or 12. And so hello we are trying to stay home and we are trying to not go out and we are stay at home and the govt is telling us stock up - don’t hoard but stock up for a week or two and try not to go out at all until we get thru this apex – this tipping point in the no. of cases and stuff, where the peak is with all the number of cases there are – so having wine delivered to your house!  Some of you may have been doing this thru NAPA or whatever but most people haven’t so if you drink wine and you’ve never heard of Wine Text and haven’t been doing this and you are interested, I’ve really been enjoying it.  It’s cool. Grocery Trips This past weekend the Gov’t announced that the Center for Disease Control urges now people to wear home made masks when they go out particularly to the grocery store while remaining the 6 foot social distancing.  Well, we have seen many people doing more than that:  gloves, shoe coverings, neck coverings under the mask, plastic bag outfits, and even plastic Halloween costume face masks….it’s been nothing short of shocking. Anti Virus-ing This is yet another category where personal choice is coming into play.  Some of my friends are antibacteria and anti virus spraying all of their groceries either before they put them into their trunks or after they get home an unbag their groceries before they put them away.  There’s no right or wrong here. It is true that it can  be helpful because the virus can stay alive for days on the things that people touch in the stores then you put it in your cart and touch it with your hands and then you could touch your mouth, nose or eyes.  People are using bleach and sprays to clean surfaces in their homes….in their cars, on front door nobs – you name it.  This all is very time consuming and a lot to be thinking about every day!  And it is definitely contributing to our mental stress levels or wellness adding up with everything else that we are thinking about. Frequent & Proper Hand Washing So the CDC first recommended singing or humming Happy Birthday Twice as being the simple way to time the amount of seconds you are supposed to scrub the soap on your hands before you rinse and dry your hands.  The CDC has a guide available to de-bunk any miss information about how to kill the virus if it gets on your hands titled Show Me the Science – How to Wash your Hands  I feel like we have all heard it a million times, but honestly today when I pulled it up I did learn that the water doesn’t need to be warm or hot (I’ve been wondering this in the back of my mind lately). The guide, based on studies (of course it comes from the CDC) says, “he temperature of the water does not appear to affect microbe removal; however, warmer water may cause more skin irritation and is more environmentally costly.” Kids Need to Eat & Eat Again It’s hard enough to plan or make our own meals let alone every single one of our children’s meals every day.  Our oldest daughter has a 3 year old and we were on Facetime with her last night and her daughter asked her for food and she said, “I just gave you a plate of chicken nuggets and you only ate half so no wonder you are hungry already.  Not to mention, I ate the other half and I am trying to not eat things like chicken nuggets.  I’m trying to eat like salads and stuff that’s better for me.”  Three year olds can’t make their own meals, but they can watch you.  Leading by example and teaching them while they are young the art of food preparation is a gift.  Our youngest who is 17, I am always cooking for him because I love to cook but I am definitely holding him accountable for helping write the grocery list and learning how to cook new meals.  It isn’t easy because he wants me to do it – he does enjoy some of it at times - but it’s a great time for young people to learn. We had one of his friends stay with us over the holiday season and he was cooking all kinds of things! His mother did a great job forcing him to cook for himself sometimes before Corona Virus hit.  So I’m sure she is having an easier time then most of us in this department right now because her son was already “trained”.  So it does help when the older kids help and it’s safe for them to cook and it’s safe for them to cook – or even more complex meals they can cook the older they are. Some of you have kids who are college age and post college  it just depends but it’s just nice when the kids lend a hand with the food and meals. It’s just nice when the older kids help when the kids contribute.   It helps us working parents! Hair-ness Well I get my hair colored and cut and my husband he gets his hair cut like every 2 weeks!  My hair is turning colors I do not care for and my husbands hair – I like it long haha but he doesn’t. I’ve got some grocery store grade root touchup dies and also some purchased from the beauty supply outlet – called SALLY.  I’m not sure how it will turn out.  I’m quite unsure haha  - I think I need to order a “toner” online.  A toner to kindof tone down some of these brassy shades showing thru.  Who knows whether it’ll show up or not!  But wth us getting onto video cams we want to feel our best. Whether it is Facebook, video meetings or whatever.  So this is taking time and thought also. The NEWS I was guilty of watching too much news at first.  Were you?  I know a lot of people were.  We were like, what is going on? What is going to happen next? What is the deal with the schools? What are they going to ask of us next? What can we do? Am I gonna get it? Are the older people I know going to be ok??  We felt like if we watched the news constantly that it would help us feel real time informed and somehow more in control of our lives.  But then it starts to wear on people psychologically.  It can be too much, even confusing.  So we started to hear advice to “limit it”.  Stay informed but direct activities, work and personal without the news on.  And also everyone has their own ways they like to dedicate and decide on timing as to dedicating it and living with someone or many others, we should work together to try so everyone is mentally doing okay with the consumption of news.  Know what I mean?  What’s worked for your family?  One thing we try to do is watch several sources at times and try to decide for ourselves what is truly important and action oriented. We still have our Ailments Geeze the pollen has been bad here.  Last week, I got the worst head ache in the middle of the day. I didn’t know why I had this head ache.  I finally put 2 and 2 together and figured out it was allergies from all the green stuff outside!  I wasn’t even thinking previously about taking any medicine. I actually have year round allergies but it’s worse in the Spring.  During Coronavirus it’s easy to forget about our other ailments that we used to totally weigh importance on.  The news too – they used to exclaim every morning – OMG the pollen is SO bad today! Don’t go outside! Like it was the worst thing ever and not once this spring have I heard the news talking about it  yes it is WAY WAY WAY less important than Covid 19.  But I must say I think that pollen and allergies can really hurt people who have asthma or other lunch vulnerabilities. So I’m not down playing it.  I’m not saying one is more important than the other but all we hear on the news now is Covid 19 and Corona Virus.  What I’m saying is part of taking care of ourselves is to eat right, exercise, get outdoors, try to sleep enough and take your vitamins and consider your bodies needs, like allergic reactions to pollen so you can feel your best.  We’re under enough stress.  We still have our ailments.  I just wanted to acknowledge that. The Subtle Art of not Giving a F*CK – Now it’s spelled differently from the way it’s spelled on the book but I am a clean podcast so….The subline to the book is A Counterintuitive approach to living a good life Well, I’m not all the way through this book but this NYTimes Best Seller is helping a lot of people. The inside flap of the book Mark Manson says, “Let’s be honest; sometimes things are fucked up and we have to live with it.” For the past few years, Manson – via his wildly popular blog – has been working on correcting our delusional expectation for ourselves and for the world.” “……Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties – once we stop running from and avoiding and start confronting painful truths- we can begin to find the courage and confidence we desperately seek.”  Interested?  Animals & Coronavirus The NY Times news confirmed, “Tiger Tests positive for Coronavirus at Bronx Zoo” and online there are articles that veterinarians are advising us to keep our pets using social distancing which is no less than 6 ft from anyone they are living with.  Some people are going to the extent of covering their pets in protective gear while outdoors walking them. Smarthome Buying Guide 2019 We have been touting the Smarthome for a few years now but somehow have never put together a Buying Guide. So for 2019 we are going to fix that. Afterall, this is the year of home automation.  This list we will only contain products that work on both iOS and Android platforms. As a result, this list will not contain some manufactures which may limit some of the things your platform of choice is capable of. The good news is if you see a product that you like on this list you can be assured that it will work in your home. One thing we would like to mention and if you already have home automation devices you already know this. No matter what product you have, home automation will give you the occasional headache. There have been times where it seemed all my devices stopped working then just as quickly everything settles out. There is a good chance that the issue was wifi related but I never really know for sure. If you use a dedicated system like Insteon, Crestron, or Control 4 you may see less issues. But if you do see issues it may cost you money to bring in an expert or with Insteon cause you frustration finding a solution buried deep down some user forum. Bottomline, home automation is good but it's not perfect. Even for experts like us.  Doorbell Ring - Prices range from $100 to $200 depending on the model. Who doesn't want to answer the door from work?? But seriously it's nice to see when a package is left at your door or if someone is trying to get into your house that shouldn't be. You can go the battery operate route or connect it to the existing wiring. Either way you will be up and running in an hour. Ring also has an app creates a virtual neighborhood watch community that lets you know what's happening around you. If you like Ring they have a family of devices to help you monitor your home.    Door Lock Schlage Smart Locks -  Prices range from $150 - $250 depending on model. Now that you have a way to remotely answer your door you may want a way to let someone in your house. A smart lock can do that. Schlage makes locks that work with Homekit, Google Home, SmartThings and more. It can even work in concert with your Ring Doorbell. Track who enters your home via a custom entry code. You can even make codes work on specific days between specific hours. There is a peace of mind you get when you know that your door is indeed locked! Garage Door myQ Smart Garage Door Opener - Street price less than $50. You can have the same peace of mind knowing that you drove away and didn't forget to close the garage door as well! The adapter is compatible with just about every garage door opener that was built in the last 20 years. Easy to install and controllable via your mobile phone. The myQ Smart Opener integrates with Apple's Homekit and Amazon's Echo. Lighting There are at least a dozen manufacturers of smart lighting and almost all of them do not need a hub. They even integrate with the Echo and Homekit so why then are be picking a light system that needs a hub? That's because the Hue Light System is quite possible the best thing you can do to your house! You can get a starter kit as low as $70. But that's only the beginning. There are hue lights for anything and everything including bulbs, lamps, light strips, indoor, and outdoor. There are even accessories that include, motion detectors, remotes, and even plugs!! If you want you can spend hundreds of dollars creating dramatic lighting scenes both inside and outside your home. Hue is compatible with Homekit, Amazon Echo, Google Assistant, and even Microsoft Cortana. Once you get done creating incredible scenes and timers you will simply forget that you spent $50 on a hub.  Smart Plugs Our advice here… go cheap! Wall plugs just need to turn on and off.  Not much else. Find a plug that works with Homekit, Amazon Echo, or Google Assistant and be done with it. We found one that works with all three!! The Wemo Smart Plug (made by Belkin) costs $20! It's small enough that it does not obscure the other plug but can handle 15A! If you are looking for the one device to start you down the home automation path this is it! Switches When it comes to switches we were torn. We had such a bad experience with Leviton Decora Smart switches when they first came out. They would lose wifi connections constantly requiring full resets to get them back. They did release a firmware upgrade that has seemed to fix the issue. We have been running for about five months with no issues. But we are still gunshy in giving this our full recommendation. We are gaining more confidence in the $50 device with each passing week.  But what will get our full recommendation is the iDevices Wifi enable dimmer switch. It costs twice as much as the Leviton device however. In the three years we have been using this device it has been offline for a total of about twenty minutes.  Thermostats If you have a smart home you'll want to be able to control the temperature and for that you have  a few options. We have installed and used thermostats made by Honnywell, Insteon, and Ecobee. We have experience with the Nest as well. There are plenty of options out there but we have settled on the ecobee 3 ($199). It has a good physical interface as well as great looking apps. It has full Homekit, Google, Alexa, SmartThings integration. You can even buy additional sensors so you can average out the temperature across your entire home. It's kind of nice being able to tell your voice assistant to set the temperature in your house to 72 degrees and not have to get out from under your warm covers! Cameras So many cameras out there. Over the years we have tried at least a dozen brands. If you have a Ring doorbell you may want to use the Ring cameras. They have great night time picture quality and tie in nicely with the Ring doorbell and sensors. They start at about $60 and go as high as $200. If Ring isn't your thing we highly recommend the Logitech Circle 2. THese cameras have a great picture during the day and a good picture at night. The Ring camera is better at night. Both can store your images in the cloud but offer a premium plan for a yearly fee. The Circle 2 cameras start at about $100 for a battery operated one and $180 for a wired camera. The Circle 2 are indoor outdoor. The Ring makes ones specifically designed for outdoor use. Motion Sensors You'll want motion sensors to make lights turn on or let you know if someone is in your house. If you use Hue lights, we strongly recommend their sensors (Hue Motion Sensor $40). The battery lasts for more than a year and the sensor responds immediately.  For the non-Hue people we recommend using your wireless camera as a sensor. And if you don't have a camera you're out of luck… just kidding. Find a sensor that works with your platform of choice. So what we are saying is if you don't have a hue light system we don't care what you do! LOL not really. We don't have enough experience with motion sensors that are multi platform. Smoke/CO2 Detector  Smoke Detector are important as are carbon monoxide detectors. How about one device that does both? The Onelink Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector runs about $80 and will let you know if it's going off via it's Android and iOS apps. It's even Homekit and Alexa compatible.  Moisture/Water Sensor We saved the most important device for last! Braden can tell you first hand (twice) that a water leak costs you money and inconvenience! A Leak Detector is a must. Our pick is a little different than placing moisture detectors around the house. In its simplest form all it will do is let you know that there is a leak. If you are at home you can shut off the water. If you are away from home you could call a friend and ask them if they can shut off your water. Perhaps you can set up individual valves that can be controlled automatically to shut off your water. Our pic is a little different. The Flo by Moen connects to your main water line where it comes into the house. It measures flowrate and helps you manage your water usage. It can detect a leak of just drips or full on pipe burst. It will let you know that the water is when it shouldn't and will automatically shut down your water.  Say you left the house and you set the system to away. You will get a notification that water is flowing. If you are doing laundry no big deal. If you know nothing is supposed to be on you can shut it down remotely. Or you can say, I am away so shut down if you sense water. There is an iOS and Android app. It costs about $900 installed so it may cost more money but it does so much more than a simple moister detector.

After months of revelations and apologies, all the major smart assistant makers have revamped how they handle human review of audio snippets. Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Siri, and Microsoft Cortana were all using third-party contractors to transcribe and vet recorded snippets, adding some human brain power to underlying machine learning algorithms. But the backlash over the lack of transparency spurred new customer controls. And with the release of Apple's iOS 13.

Did you know that all your voice recordings that you make on your assistant such as Google Assistant, Amazon with Alexa, Apple Siri, or Microsoft Cortana, that in many instances those recordings are not private.Recently Apple apologized for listening to Siri recordings. This was discovered because human contractors were listening to extended audio samples and the commands that were given to this voice assistant. This was to improve the quality. However this was disclosed publicly and Apple CEO Tim Cook indicated they will be changing this. They got rid of all their human review by contractors indicating that in the future it was only going to be Apple employees as they can better hold them to non-disclosure standards and they claimed they would no longer keep the recordings.Interesting enough Tim Cook often refers to privacy as a fundamental human right and in this instance they would push out so updates so you are aware your recordings will be reviewed. We end up giving a lot of consent for these privacy issues that exist these days because we don't even want to read the huge and confusing legal acceptable use policies and we just want to use the software or app.I feel that privacy is one of the top issues are our time and it's at the forefront of the news now with things like Cambridge Analytica on Facebook last year. Make sure you review your own privacy and security settings on your accounts and what is being shared. I realize a lot of us ignore security for the sake of convenience, so don't be surprised when something "bad" happens.

Welcome to another episode of 7-Minute Marketing with Pam. My name is Pam Didner. I love sharing a little dose of B2B, digital, content marketing and sales enablement, seven minutes at a time.  In my previous episode, I talked about the importance of keeping up with marketing technology. One of the best ways I mentioned is to talk to various vendors at marketing conferences. When I went to Martech West in the San Jose Convention Center early April, I did my rounds and talked to different vendors. I am not affiliated with any of these vendors but I want to tell you about 3 vendors that caught my eye and share with you what they offer. Voicify You can use their platform to create a voice-enabled application which can be downloaded to Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Microsoft Cortana and your chatbots. It allows brands to seamlessly create and manage their voice content across any number of smart speakers & devices. This is similar to Libsyn, which some of you may use to manage your podcast episodes. Libsyn lets you upload your audio files and then automatically syndicate to iTunes, iHeart radio and other podcast or radio channels.  The Voicify platform is the Libsyn version for voice and more. For Libsyn, you upload the finished audio files. For Voicify, you can manage your content and a list of questions and answers all in one platform. You can update and refresh your content on a regular basis and you can also customize and deploy your content for different voice assistants and chatbots. This is the first voice management platform I have come across. Again, it’s called Voicify. Strala  The next one is Strala. I enjoyed talking to the co-founder, Rob Clarke. He is incredibly passionate about tracking customers’ online and offline touch points to improve customer journeys and quantify ROI, basically tracking all your marketing efforts end-to-end. He said if you really want to track each touch point, you need to standardize your touch points’ tracking mechanism with consistent marketing taxonomies across all channels, publishers, content and messaging. I 100% agree with him. Most marketing organizations are divided by marketing functions. Marketers tend to focus on measuring the marketing they manage. But someone needs to have a holistic view and take ownership of automating the tracking beyond basic UTM parameters. They offer 3 products: Touchpoint, I just mentioned. Journey Stream that shows customers’ touchpoints throughout their journeys. And, Prism is their standard dashboard. I know many vendors offer similar tools. I just thought their approach is sound for standardizing all the tracking, not just using APIs to pull data from various sources. Again, it’s called Strala. They position themselves as “Turnkey Insights and attributions across all online and offline touchpoints.” Very cool. Alyce Ok, this company caught my eye because they want to help you pick the perfect gifts for your customers. Alyce bases its gift suggestions on information that is pulled from customers’ social media accounts. The company can also provide popular gift options on their platform. Apparently, they have more than 30,000 gift options. Their platform uses AI to select the gift options, and is integrated with SalesForce.com to track conversions. In this episode, Teri releases the results of the Future of Alexa in Canada survey to give us a clue as to where we are going with a lot of the features within the Alexa in Canada and Voice in Canada brands. And the Results are….!Teri was overwhelmed by the 95+ responses he got from the survey. The feedback will be very valuable when coming up with a way forward for the Alexa in Canada community. Survey Question 1: How comfortable are you with voice technology?13.8% are beginners (new users of voice technology). This demonstrates that the podcast and flash briefing should be putting out some of the basic information on how to get started with voice devices, and so on.47.9% are somewhat comfortable with voice devices.38.3% consider themselves advanced users of voice technology.The audience of the Alexa in Canada Podcast has different needs as far as where they are in their journey of using voice assistants.Teri continuously tries to provide value for people at different stages of their journey in using voice technology.In future, there will be some more content geared towards the different groups, but all the groups will have access to all the content.Survey Question 2: Which voice assistants do you use?97.7% of the respondents use Amazon Alexa. There were 3 people who said they don’t use Amazon Alexa.42.6% use Apple Siri while 31.9% use Google Assistant.There were less people who use Microsoft Cortana, Samsung Bizby, and other voice assistants.Survey Question 3: Where do you use your voice assistant? Do you use your voice assistant to control smart home devices?98% said they use their voice assistants at home.40% said they use voice assistants on their iOS phones, 27% on their Android phones, and 29.5% use it in their cars.62.1% said they use their voice assistants to control smart home devices.Survey Question 4: Which best describes your use of voice technology?88.4% of people said they use their voice assistants in their everyday lives while 31.6% said that they consider voice technology to be a hobby of theirs, meaning they are very interested in it.Survey Question 5: Which resources do you find most useful?56.2% of people said that they the website and the blog to be the most useful resource of the Alexa in Canada community.55.1% of people said they found the flash briefing to be one of the most useful resources.Survey Question 6: Which of the specific features do you find most useful?82.6% of people like learning about Alexa commands meaning they like being told what to say to their devices.56.5% of people said they like Alexa tutorials.48.9% of people said that they find skill reviews and hardware/smart home device recommendations useful.27% of people said that they like hearing about different sales and deals that Teri has been trying to highlight for the community.Survey Question 7: How did you first discover our community?39.8% of the respondents found the Alexa in Canada resource through Google searches which demonstrates that the content is ranking high on Google.18% of the people found the community through Facebook.17.2% of respondents found the Alexa in Canada community through the Voice in Canada Flash Briefing.Survey Question 8: What is your favorite part about Alexa in Canada?Some people said that its current and Canadian. That seemed to be an overarching theme.Some people wrote that the page is helpful and informative. They loved the information of new skills, instructions on how to use new skills, hardware reviews, the flash briefings, and the podcasts.Somebody said that they have actually listened to the podcasts from number one until now since discovering the podcast.The Facebook community does their best to help others.Someone wrote that they like the attitude and the style of the podcast, and the rest of the brand.Survey Question 9: Ways that it can be improvedThere has been a misconception that Alexa in Canada is the official Amazon Alexa in Canada website, which prompted some people to make suggestions or ask questions about issues that only Amazon can handle. One person said, “Stop treating us like lesser customers than the Americans”In AlexainCanada.ca/29, Dave Isbitski gave the official Amazon response explaining why it takes longer for Canadians to get some of the features compared to Americans.A lot of people said they like it the way it is.There was a suggestion to create a specific stream or area for voice developers with tips, sample codes, and so on.Somebody said they would like a discussion on the future of devices and abilities.Some people would like a “What’s New” portion where they can see when something new comes out in Canada. Somebody said they would like more industry people interviews.A couple of people said that they would like to see more skills in Canada, but skill developers (third-party developers) are the ones that have control on where their skills are released. The voice operating system will become a real companion to a person.The Impact Voice will have on the Elderly in the FutureThere are 10,000 people on average in America that turn 65 every day.Iron Man or the Avengers movies have a great example of augmented reality in Jarvis. This Jarvis kind of operating system will not start the way we see it in the movies. It will start by being an audio system like an Alexa, maybe augmented by a TV screen.Future scenario: Imagine a future 2021 or 2024 when an elderly person has an Alexa in their room, they wake up in the morning and there is a sensor that detects that they have woken up, the lights will turn on in just the way that is best for their physiology, the TV screen will come up, and a photograph of his/her family members will come up on the screen. Alexa will then talk to him/her in a familiar voice, for example the voice of his/her deceased spouse, explaining all the things that he/she could be forgetting every day due to dementia.If we get people to start thinking through voice as an operating system with a long view, we’ll make much better decisions about what we build, what we promote, what we stand behind, and what we support, because we will be thinking about our great, great, great children that we will never meet, but who we will affect with our actions today.The Silver LiningThere are two most important core technologies; Voice and Blockchain.Voice as an operating system is the most important technology that there is ever going to be for individual human beings. Voice will make a more pleasurable and productive impact on our lives than any other technology.Blockchain will be used to ensure data security and enable existing and new organizations to be semi or fully decentralized. Voice technology devices will have to release some of the control that they have in the centralized power system and give people access to their data. The Blockchain ledger being used will hold the related company accountable. The company and the technology will be held accountable. I admit, I use hyperbole quite a bit, but I also religiously try to stick to the data, and the data is saying that nearly $770 million will be spent on podcast advertising by 2020, which suggests a massive trend towards user attention being on audio, podcasts, and Alexa-enabled devices, and there is data to prove it. 22% of Americans have smart assistants in their home, up from less than 1% a year ago. That’s huge, people. This is the next way to get your audience’s attention. Amazon’s Alexa (Echo Device) holds 71% of the voice market, followed by Google Home at 18%, Microsoft Cortana at 10% and Apple HomePod at less than 1%. 88% of 12-24 year olds listened to online audio in the last month. Estimated hours of weekly online audio that will be consumed in 2018: THIRTEEN HOURS AND 40 MINUTES PER WEEK. That’s insane. Name something else other than sleep or work that you do that often each week. When Google wowed the tech world with its demo of Duplex -- the tech that allows its digital Assistant make phone calls to perform mundane tasks like booking haircuts or making restaurant reservations -- Microsoft's Cortana chief was impressed, but not worried. "The technologist in me had no choice but to feel impressed," Javier Soltero, Microsoft corporate vice president of Cortana, said in this episode of Mashable's MashTalk podcast. "The idea that a computer can generate a voice with the right processes, right inflection, all of the right things to mimic humans, is amazing to see in practice, but not entirely surprising." But Soltero didn't immediately think, "We need to do something similar with Cortana so we can catch up to what they're doing." In fact, the Google Duplex demo emphasized just how different the two companies' approaches to voice technology are. Whereas Google is clearly putting consumer-friendly features that automate mundane tasks front and center, Microsoft is looking to make Cortana into a more symbiotic tool -- something that works in conjunction with a human, not necessarily in the person's stead. Think that scene in the first Iron Man movie, where Tony Stark has a continuous conversation with his digital assistant, JARVIS, as he designs the second generation of his armor. "It was clear that that was not where we were headed," Soltero said of Duplex. "We are interested in not that level of having the computer do stuff for you. We're more trying to enable you to do more things yourself." Soltero become master of Cortana in March 2018 after playing a big role in Microsoft's Outlook and Office apps. He first came to the company by way of Acompli, a well-regarded email app that Microsoft acquired in 2014. After successfully turning Outlook into one of the best email apps on mobile, he's now putting his expertise to work to push forward Microsoft's voice assistant. And it definitely needs a push -- the mindshare in the voice-assistant space is dominated by Amazon, Google, and, to a lesser extent, Apple. Even Samsung seems to have gotten more buzz. It's not like Cortana has been stagnant. It's made progress by migrating from phones to PCs (although, considering the fate of Windows Phone/Mobile, it was more like abandoning ship), and the first Cortana-enabled smart speakers, starting with the Harman Kardon Invoke, arrived on the market last year. Still, the Invoke isn't a Microsoft product. Given the ever-expanding number of competing products powered by Alexa or Google Assistant, everybody's wondering when Microsoft will flex its growing hardware muscles (its line of Surface tablets and laptops has been a solid success for the company) to build its own smart speaker. "We have lots and lots of ambitious plans that I can't discuss, but you will be learning more as the course of the year plays out," Soltero said. "And as you've probably seen, we're working closely with Amazon to integrate Cortana into the Alexa and Echo experience as well as having Alexa integrate into Cortana. It's ultimately less about the device and more about where the effect of the assistant is felt." Although everything is "early days" in tech, when it comes to voice assistants, it's not just a line. In this case, science fiction has set the standard for what constitutes success in the field -- an interactive, almost telepathic computer that we can talk to just like we would a human. Star Trek, Her, and other movies have all shown the dream, but it's still a long way off. Getting there will mean taking many, many baby steps to get there, but Microsoft thinks it's on the right path after its acquisition of Semantic Machines. Besides technology, Semantic brings a keen philosophy to voice interactions -- there should be no "dead ends." Which is to say, when you make a query to one of these assistants, and it can't complete the query for whatever reason, it shouldn't just give up and tell you it doesn't understand. Instead, it'll keep asking follow-up questions until it gets you to what you want, and if it still can't do that, it provides an opportunity to teach the AI what the right answer is. The semantic machines team is hard at work with the Cortana folks to bring those capabilities into Cortana. I'm still, along with my team, really focused on this problem... how do we go from, 'Hey, Alexa, turn on the lights,' to what is a much more complicated and natural-sounding articulation." Getting to those natural interactions, tailored to each user, will clearly be a long process, with many steps, but Soltero is clear what he thinks is the next one. "The wake word is the first thing to go."

As we increasingly turn to virtual assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Siri, Microsoft Cortana, and Google, it is already becoming easier to search for information using our voice. Mainstream users are already getting comfortable with speaking to their devices rather than tapping away on a physical or virtual keyboard. However, we don't all live on the West Coast of the US and this technology often struggles to understand different accents. Fluent.ai is a Canadian company offering OEMs and user interface designers a speech interface solution for their products and services. While there are over 150 million phone devices with digital assistants like Siri and Google Assistant, and quickly growing smart speaker devices with Amazon’s Alexa on board, there’s another device that dwarfs these numbers in comparison. While they are considered voice-first devices, there are over a half billion Windows 10 devices (including Xboxes) with Microsoft’s digital assistant, Cortana, on board listening out for your questions and requests. And throw in pieces like Office 365, Bing and LinkedIn, Cortana has a lot of potential data and interactions to draw on in order to help people get things done in a much more efficient and contextually relevant manner – both for personal and business reasons. Christi Olson, Microsoft’s Head of Evangelism for Search, discusses how this lineup of services and platforms is coming together using AI and conversational interfaces to transform how people work, as well as how they’ll engage with customers.

Pat Higbie is CEO and co-founder of XAPPmedia which delivers voice interactive apps and managed services for media and brands looking to connect with consumers on Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana or other platforms. Pat has worked in voice technology for a decade and co-founded XAPP in 2012, well before Amazon Echo launched. The company first worked with mobile audio apps to voice enable their content discovery and ads. Pat says, this is why the company originally built its platform for scale. In 2016, XAPP began working with brands and media companies to build and manage voice apps. Today, the company has hundreds of voice apps under management. Pat talks about what he has learned bringing so many organizations to voice interaction for the first time and what it takes to build a scalable voice platform.

Bixby is the name, the New Samsung Galaxy S8 launching next week is the game. This new AI assistant is going head to head with Amazon Echo and Apple Siri. Of course there are other AI's out there, like Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana, IBM Watson, and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg Jarvis. What Samsung says is different about Bixby will be it's ability to work across multiple applications at the same time.

This session we talk about the ever growing personal assistants trend.  There are many out on the market but the 3 major companies that stand out are Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and Google assistant.  Sadly I have to throw in Microsoft Cortana too. With our hands on these 3 items, we give our 4 cents to the discussion of what we see as the leading candidate with this growing voice activating trend.

Capital One seem to be leading with technology by recently launching a "how much did I spend? skill to Amazon Echo. The service is also being rolled out to users of Microsoft Cortana too.  The ability to ask "How much did I spend at Starbucks last month" and receive an instant answer without any hassle is a real game changer and eye opener to those who manage their finances on the go. I invited Ken Dodelin onto the show to find out more. He's the Vice President, Digital Product Development at Capital One and is waiting to tell us all about the skills available on Amazon Echo and Microsoft Cortana.
