What if the way we've been reading the Bible has been missing something essential? What if the Scriptures aren't just a collection of propositional truths, but a grand narrative - a story that Jesus Himself used to unveil the deepest realities of the Kingdom of God? That's the argument made by author and storyteller Daniel Schwabauer as we dive into the power of story in this conversation. Dan points us to a pivotal moment in the Gospels - when Jesus tells the parable of the sower in Mark 4. Here, he reveals a secret about the Kingdom, saying "The secret of the Kingdom of God has been given to you." But why parables? Why not just lay out the truth plainly? Well, Jesus was doing something profound - He was inviting His disciples, and us, into a narrative journey. One that requires engagement, interpretation, and the work of the Holy Spirit to truly understand. By recovering this narrative lens, the church can rediscover the true power of the gospel message. It's a fascinating exploration of how the way we communicate shapes what we communicate - and how applying the principles of great storytelling can breathe new life into the ancient story of redemption. Join us as we discover the God of story. Daniel Schwabauer, ThD, teaches English at MidAmerica Nazarene University and writes award-winning fantasy and science fiction novels. Is the book Acts about the Holy Spirit? The apostles? Spiritual gifts? Or the interaction with cultures? What is the purpose of the church? What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus in a pluralistic society? How do we build a bridge to communicate the gospel and then confront the new culture with the gospel message? Is there a "pure" gospel? What does it mean when every theology is a contextual theology? Join Travis as he continues his discussion with Dean Flemming, as they discuss the need to contextualize the gospel so that our audience understands it, and is challenged by it. Today's guest is Dr. Dean Flemming. Dean Flemming (Ph.D., University of Aberdeen) is an award-winning author, Bible teacher, and seminar speaker. He is Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Mission at MidAmerica Nazarene University and teaches New Testament at the Missional Training Center in Phoenix, AZ. He served for 24 years as a theological educator in the Philippines and Germany and has taught in many global settings.Dean is the author of six books, including Contextualization in the New Testament, which won a Christianity Today book award, and a commentary on Philippians that received the Smith-Wynkoop book award. He writes especially on the connection between the New Testament and mission. An ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene, Dean has pastored churches in Ohio and Japan. He is active in his local church, which includes teaching an adult Bible class.Today, he joins Apollos Watered to discuss his book, Contextualization in the New Testament, and how the early church contextualized the message of Jesus to its audience and we must do the same thing as well. "Just be biblical!" "Preach the Word!" are phrases we hear from well-meaning Christians who want to see lives transformed. Rarely, however, do we think about exactly how we are supposed to do it. What do we mean by "be biblical"? Does that mean act like those in the first century? And what exactly are we preaching? Christ crucified for sure, but what stories, illustrations, and metaphors do we employ to build a bridge that help our listeners understand what the cross really means? It sounds complicated, but it's actually not as hard as we think. You have probably heard the phrase, "Know your audience!" That's what we are talking about. Communicating to your audience in a way that they understand. As Christians, we call this process, "contextualization." How do we go about communicating the gospel to those from different backgrounds than us that enables us to communicate in a way that they understand without compromising what the Gospel calls for. Today's guest is Dr. Dean Flemming. Dean Flemming (Ph.D., University of Aberdeen) is an award-winning author, Bible teacher, and seminar speaker. We all wear labels. Some of the labels we are proud of, and others bring us a lot of shame. Because of the labels we try to hide, we are quick to put labels on other people. In the parable of the prodigal son, the father invites both brothers—the rebellious younger child and the performance-driven child to see themselves as beloved. Jesus invites us to see ourselves as beloved too. When we understand how loved we are, we are able to walk through the doors of grace and forgiveness… and then extend that grace and forgiveness to others. Welcome to episode seventy-four of New Creation Conversations. We are back after about a month hiatus for vacation and to get this school year started. In August my wife and daughter and I took a long-anticipated trip to Spain, France, and Italy. It was my first time in those places, and we had an amazing time. However, I'm excited to be back to working on some New Creation Conversations. And just FYI, you're going to want to hang in for the announcement of who's joining me the next few weeks. I'm super excited… but I'm also very excited to introduce my guest for today. Dr. Dean Flemming has just recently retired after lots of years of teaching. Dean is now Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Mission at MidAmerica Nazarene University. Dean taught for over twenty years outside the US – at European Nazarene College and at Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary. About a decade ago Dean came back to his Alma Matter – MidAmerica Nazarene University – and finished his teacher career there. He also has an MDiv degree from NTS and earned his PhD in New Testament from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Dean has written six books and contributed to several others. Our conversation focuses on his most recent book, Foretaste of the Future: Reading Revelation in the Light of God's Mission (published by IVP Academic). As you will hear, Dean not only has important insights into Revelation, but his unique gift is helping us to read the Scripture – and in this case Revelation – missionally. It's a great book and a rich conversation.

Welcome to episode forty-four of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by a friend and valued colleague in ministry, Dr. David Sharpes. David has been in ministry for over 40 years, serving as youth pastor, lead pastor, and district superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene. He has served in Philadelphia and Phoenix and several places in between. David is an alum of MidAmerica Nazarene University, has an MDiv from Nazarene Theological Seminary, and a DMin from Fuller Theological Seminary.Along the way in ministry, David has taught as an adjunct at several colleges and seminaries. Just recently, he moved into the academic world fulltime, now serving as Associate Professor of Christian Ministry, the Smith/Cooper Chair in Evangelism and Christian Witness, and the Director of the Center for Pastoral Leadership at Nazarene Theological Seminary. I've been anxious to have a conversation with David because I have deep respect for his pastoral ministry, and I know that we are kindred spirits in many ways. But I also am excited to get to talk with him about his new role as one forming the next generation of ministers, and his passion and perspective on evangelism and witness in the twenty-first century. These are unique days of transition for the church as we learn to extend the love of Jesus to a postmodern, post-industrial, post-Christian, post-Enlightenment… well as one scholar puts it, “a post-everything culture.” I'm really thankful for David's heart, mind, and commitment to helping the church fulfill the Great Commission. And I'm thankful that you're sitting in with us on this conversation.

Humble people doing great things is always inspirational. Prepare yourself to be inspired today by listening to our conversation with Walter Panzirer, Trustee of the Helmsley Charitable Trust. Having lived and worked in rural America, Walter immediately knew where he could make a difference and improve lives when he found out he had been named as a Trustee. “We were given a blank slate to see how we can improve lives around the world.” ~Walter Panzirer Walter Panzirer, is a grandson of Leona Helmsley. Raised in California, he adopted South Dakota as his home. Having worked as a first responder in both states, Walter witnessed personally the significant disparities in quality health care available close to home – disparities that demanded attention. Serving as a paramedic, firefighter, and police officer also made him acutely aware of the range of situations encountered by these professionals – from cardiac and stroke events, to individuals facing a mental health crisis. Upon the death of his grandmother, Walter was to his great surprise named a Trustee of the Helmsley Charitable Trust. He realized the opportunity for investing in better healthcare for Americans in rural communities as well as for supporting communities across rural Africa to build resilience. A passionate advocate for telehealth, Walter is committed to shortening the distance between a medical emergency and life-saving treatment, including outfitting first responders with modern equipment for managing emergencies. His curiosity, coupled with a get-it-done acumen, means that he's always looking for healthcare leapfrog opportunities that can be readily implemented. Walter studied business and history at Black Hills State University, and pursued pastoral studies at MidAmerica Nazarene University. An inductee to American Telehealth Association's College of Fellows as well the South Dakota Hall of Fame, Walter has served on a number of nonprofit and educational boards. He, his wife, and their family own and operate a hunting lodge in rural South Dakota.

Join me and fellow therapist, Valerie Hamaker, as we riff about all things enabling. This episode is a replay of an episode we recorded for her podcast, "Voice About Living" and is the follow up to a previous episode where she interviews a former client about her enabling patterns. In this episode, we discuss: Why do we enable harmful behaviors in our loved ones? How does this happen? How can we know that we are enabling? How does the enabler feel? And most importantly, how do we stop enabling and heal our relationships from this pattern? This is episode 97 from Valerie's podcast that provides background and context for our interview: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/voices-about-living/id1474263480?i=1000524513562 Connect with Geoff Steurer: Instagram Facebook Visit www.geoffsteurer.com for online courses and other supportive resources. Today we salute a veteran who exemplifies everything that our armed forces stand for. This Former US Navy Aviator personifies the Honor, Courage, and Commitment of the US Military every day. Captain Tammie Jo Shults of the United States Navy is a Captain for Southwest Airlines, where she flies Boeing 737's daily. It was in this position, at the controls of Flight 1380, two years ago on Tuesday April 17th, 2018, where Captain Shults safely and confidently made an emergency landing in her fully loaded aircraft saving the lives of her passengers and crew. Sadly one passenger was killed when an exploding jet engine sent shrapnel into the airplane interior, puncturing the skin and blowing out a window. But even with the knowledge that her airplane was severely damaged, down one engine, and that there were a number of injuries aboard including some serious, Captain Shults commanded that airliner to a safe landing in Philadelphia. A native of New Mexico, Shults graduated college in 1983 with degrees in both Biology and Agribusiness from MidAmerica Nazarene University before joining the Navy. Shults always dreamt of becoming a pilot, and initially applied for the Air Force but was unable to test to become a pilot because the Air Force was not accepting female pilot applicants then. The US Navy welcomed her, and she went on to become one of the first female fighter jet pilots in US Navy history. She rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander during her 10 year career with the distinction of being THE FIRST woman to fly the Navy's F/A-18 Fighter Jet and was a member of Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 34 when she finished her career with the Navy in 1993 and accepted a position with Southwest Airlines. Now a Captain with the airline and a mother of 2, she lives in Texas with her husband Dean who is also a pilot. Captain Tammie Jo Shults is a hero and an inspiration to an entire nation.
