Time to prevent shutdown running out; House GOP makes case for impeachment inquiry; Dumbledore actor Michael Gambon dies; Miguel Cabrera's career winding down

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Sept. 29 at 7:06 a.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — The House is in a familiar position with little time left to prevent a government shutdown: It's effectively paralyzed as conservatives feud with Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The California congressman has pushed his Republican conference to embrace a short-term spending plan that would include a sweeping Republican proposal for the southern border. But a small group of hard-line conservatives has defied McCarthy's leadership in a quest to get rid of stopgap funding plans even if it means a government shutdown. The conflict has resulted in a House Republican conference struggling to pass spending legislation just as government funding expires. The deadline is Saturday. WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans have spent more than six hours making their case for pursuing an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. They launched their first hearing Thursday promising to “provide accountability” as they probe the family's finances and the lucrative business dealings of Biden's son Hunter. Republicans so far have shown no hard evidence of wrongdoing by the president, and key witnesses said they do not yet see hard evidence of impeachable offenses. It all comes just before a potential government shutdown. The White House called the hearing a “baseless stunt.” Oversight Chairman James Comer later issued subpoenas for additional Biden family bank records. The National Weather Service is warning of heavy rains and the chance of flooding in the Northeast, including New York City and Connecticut. HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii authorities are looking for a man who fled with a handgun after getting into a scuffle while trying to talk to soldiers at an Army base. No shots were fired but the Army treated it as an “active shooter situation” and two military bases on Oahu went into lockdown for several hours. The Army is working with the Honolulu Police Department to find the suspect, who is still at large. Wheeler Army Airfield also went into lockdown. Schofield Barracks is on Oahu and is about 20 miles north of Honolulu. It hosts the 25th Infantry Division and the 8th Theater Sustainment Command. QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Authorities in Pakistan say at least 52 people were killed and nearly 70 wounded after a powerful bomb exploded in a crowd of people celebrating the Prophet Muhammad's birthday in the southwest of the country. The bombing, one of the deadliest in recent years, occurred in Mastung, a district in Baluchistan province, an area that has witnessed scores of attacks by insurgents. Videos showed an area near a mosque strewn with the shoes of the dead and wounded. Some of the bodies had been covered with bedsheets. Two people were killed in a separate blast at a mosque in the northwest. A champion is crowned in the American League East, the Mariners win a crucial game with a late inning rally, the Blue Jays now have a firm hold on the American League's second wild card spot, the race for the final two wild card spots in the National League remains tight with weather adding a wrinkle to the already tension filled race, and the Lions move to 3-1. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans are making the case for pursuing an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. They launched their first hearing Thursday with testimony from outside experts in tax law, criminal investigations and constitutional legal theory. It's a high-stakes opening act for Republicans as as they try to link the business dealings of Biden's son, Hunter, to the president. But so far they have no hard evidence of wrongdoing by the president. it comes just before a potential government shutdown. Oversight Chairman James Comer says they want to “provide accountability” to Americans. But Democrats argued Donald Trump who is Biden's chief rival in 2024 is egging them on, with no evidence of Biden wrongdoing. THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Police in the Netherlands say a lone gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire in an apartment and a hospital in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam, killing three people, including a 14-year-old girl. The shooting sent patients and medics fleeing the Erasmus Medical Center in downtown Rotterdam, including some who were wheeled out of the building in beds. Police Chief Fred Westerbeke says the shooter was a 32-year-old student from Rotterdam. He was arrested at the hospital carrying a firearm. The suspect's identity has not been released, and the motive for the shootings remains under investigation. WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy grew at a 2.1% annual pace from April through June, extending its sturdy performance in the face of higher interest rates, the government said Thursday, leaving its previous estimate unchanged. The second-quarter expansion of the nation's gross domestic product — its total output of goods and services — marked a modest deceleration from the economy's 2.2% annual growth from January through March. Consumer spending, business investment and state and local government outlays drove the second-quarter economic expansion. The economy and job market have shown surprising resilience even as the Federal Reserve has dramatically raised interest rates to combat inflation, which last year hit a four-decade high. SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The Pentagon says that the American soldier who sprinted into North Korea across the heavily fortified border between the Koreas more than two months ago was whisked to a Texas Army base for medical checks and interviews after his return to the U.S. North Korea abruptly announced a day earlier that it would expel Pvt. Travis King. The White House says his return was organized with the help of ally Sweden and rival China. While officials have said King is in good health and the immediate focus will be on caring for him and reintegrating him into U.S. society, his troubles are likely far from over. King ran into the North while on a civilian tour of a border village on July 18. Lawmakers probing the cause of last month's deadly Maui wildfire did not get many answers during Thursday's congressional hearing on the role the electrical grid played in the disaster. Hawaii's top public utility officials and the president of Hawaiian Electric testified in the hearing about the role the electrical grid played in last month's deadly Maui wildfire. Hawaiian Electric president Shelee Kimura promised to provide the committee with more details about the timeline that day. The Lahaina fire killed at least 97 people and destroyed more than 2,000 buildings. It erupted on Aug. 8, when strong winds appeared to cause a Hawaiian Electric power line to fall, igniting dry brush and grass near a large subdivision. WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — From Sunday, workers at the main United States base in Antarctica will no longer be able to walk into a bar and order a beer, after the federal agency overseeing the research program decided to stop serving alcohol. The National Science Foundation says researchers and support staff can still buy a weekly ration of alcohol from the McMurdo Station store. But the changes could prove significant because the bars have been central to social life in the isolated environment. The changes come as concerns grow that sexual misconduct has been allowed to flourish at McMurdo. An investigation by The Associated Press last month uncovered a pattern of women who said their claims of sexual harassment and assault were minimized by their employers. BOSTON (AP) — A California man has pleaded guilty to arranging hundreds of sham marriages in an effort to circumvent immigration laws. That is according to federal prosecutors. Forty-nine-year-old Marcialito Biol Benitez, a Philippine national living in Los Angeles, pleaded guilty Wednesday to conspiracy to commit marriage fraud and immigration document fraud. U.S. District Court Judge Denise Casper scheduled sentencing for Jan. 10. The U.S. attorney's office in Boston said Benitez operated a large-scale marriage fraud agency in which he arranged marriages between foreign nationals and American citizens. Prosecutors alleged the agency charged up to $35,000 to submit false paperwork substantiating the sham marriages. NEW YORK (AP) — Hollywood actors will resume negotiations with studios and streaming services next week. The announcement Wednesday comes the same day that a nearly five-month writers strike formally ended. That strike's end quickly led to announcements that TV's late-night hosts would return to the air by Monday. That's the same day negotiators from the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists will resume talks on a new contract. They've been on strike more than two months, leading to a complete shutdown of movie and film productions. This week's end to the writers strike raised hopes that a deal with actors could be reached soon. LONDON (AP) — Michael Gambon, the Irish-born actor knighted for his long and storied career on the stage and screen and who gained admiration from a new generation of moviegoers with his portrayal of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight “Harry Potter” films, has died. He was 82. A statement by his family, issued by his publicist on Thursday, said he died following “a bout of pneumonia.” While the Potter role raised Gambon's international profile and found him a huge audience, he had long been recognized as one of Britain's leading actors. His work spanned TV, theater, film and radio over five decades. He was cast as the much-loved Dumbledore after his predecessor, Richard Harris, died in 2002. DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera's career will end with the Detroit Tigers on Sunday against Cleveland at Comerica Park, where a sold-out crowd will include a few thousands fans paying for standing-room only tickets to cheer for him one more time. The 12-time All-Star leaves the game with quite a legacy. The popular player has also provided a desperately needed jolt of joy in his native Venezuela during a crisis that has pushed millions into poverty and compelled 7.3 million people to migrate. Cabrera has put himself in the conversation with all-time greats at the plate. NEW YORK (AP) — Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Dave Matthews, H.E.R., Chris Stapleton, St. Vincent and New Edition will perform at this fall's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which will be broadcast live for the first time. The ceremony will be live on Disney+ on Nov. 3 and streamable afterward. ABC will air a special featuring performance highlights and standout moments on Jan. 1. The inductees this year include Missy Elliott, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Chaka Khan, “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius, Kate Bush and the late George Michael. Nominees were voted on by more than 1,000 artists, historians and music industry professionals. The curtain is finally coming down on Netflix's once-iconic DVD-by-mail service, a quarter century after the birth of a concept that obliterated Blockbuster video stores while providing a springboard into video streaming that has transformed entertainment. The DVD service that has been steadily shrinking in the shadow of Netflix's video streaming service will shut down after its five remaining distribution centers mail out their final discs Friday to the fewer than 1 million remaining subscribers. It marks the end of a service that began when a first-class stamp cost 32 cents, less than half today's price, and went on make its red-and-white envelopes a welcome sight in mailboxes. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Airman First Class Larry Sutherland joined the Airforce at 17, and signed up for the Security Police training program. In Vietnam, many Air Force bases were completely surrounded by guerrilla forces, so the USAF Security Police were specially trained to protect them from direct attacks and sabotage.  During his training in North Dakota, Sutherland and some fellow soldiers wanted to “get even” with some missile security personnel that they took issue with. To do so, they broke into missile silo, but they were caught. Two members of the group went to prison, but Sutherland was found innocent of sabotage, and avoided being court martialed. Sutherland was then given a choice: Stay in North Dakota, or train at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, and then head to Vietnam. At that time there was a rumor that 75% casualties were expected in the unit he would join in Vietnam, but Sutherland wanted to get out of North Dakota so badly that he didn't care. So, he went to Schofield.  According to Sutherland, the Security Police training at Schofield was worse than Vietnam. He said the instructors were “the most sadistic, mean bastards I've ever seen in my life or since. I could not believe that anybody could be so mean and hateful, in all ranks, from two stripers up to the officers. They just hated us. They treated us with such contempt...And when you fell out, and guys did, because guys were dying of heart attacks, they went over and pissed on them. That's the kind of people they were. They were pissing on dying people. I saw it with my eyes. I can see it till the day I die.” After completing his training, he was sent to Vietnam, where, due to the high casualty rate, he was sure he was going to die. He was stationed first at Pleiku Air Base, and then Phan Rang Air Base. Both bases were surrounded by guerilla forces. One Sunday night at Phan Rang, the Viet Cong launched a surprise attack. Alcoholism was a serious issue in his unit, so many of the Security Policemen at Phan Rang Air Base were intoxicated when the attack began. A few of these intoxicated men were in a bunker with Sutherland during the attack, and no matter how much he kicked and screamed, they wouldn't get up to fight. They just rolled over and went back to sleep.  Upon returning to the states, Sutherland was tasked with monitoring protests in New Jersey.  Learn more about your ad choices. After working there, I attended Machinery Technician School in Virginia and graduated in 2015. Then I was transferred to a small boat station in St. Ignace, Michigan. While there, I maintained and repaired our boats and carried out law enforcement duties and search and rescue missions. During my time in Michigan, I was accumulating ribbons frequently, and it never made sense to me that I had to purchase a new ribbon rack just to add a single ribbon. In 2019 I began thinking of different ways I could create a modular ribbon rack that would be convenient for not only myself but other service members as well. While starting my product research and development, I decided to change career paths and switch rates from MK to AMT. I attended AMT School in North Carolina and graduated in 2020. After that, I transferred to Mobile, Alabama where I currently work on C144s as an Aviation Maintenance Technician. I continued my product development and prototyping through all of 2021 and launched my store in 2022. The product I invented was getting more attention than I could have ever hoped for. My goal of creating a more convenient ribbon rack for service members was complete. But I still have more ideas for improving the SnapRack to make it the most versatile ribbon rack on the market. Jer and I reconnected when I was in the Navy in Hawai'i, where I lived and went to college for 4 years while active duty in the Navy. Jer was also in college at the time at HPU after a stint in Boulder. I ran into him Fall 1995 on a Friday night at Hope Chapel Kaneohe. It was a short drive for him living in Lanikai, a longer drive for me living near Wahiawa, on the Wheeler Army Airfield between Schofield Barracks and Mililani. Jer went back to the Catholic faith of his youth later after several years in Protestant ministry as an adult. Ten years ago, he founded Little j Marketing Company based in Englewood, Colorado. After returning from his overseas deployment, his mission continued supporting the United States Secret Service providing protection for President George W. We talked about a lot of her passion, her background, why she chose the career she did in the Army, how she landed at the BSA and a variety of other topics. It really was a great insight into who she was and an honest view of her abilities, even though we had a lot of laughs at her "deployment" to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. As a young, African American woman, it might not be someone you would expect to be the leading the Central Florida Council, but she surprised me with how grounded she is in how she views herself and her capabilities. I have a feeling that grounding came from her Marine father and her mother and I can't wait to see what she does going forward.

We discuss among other things going to college in Hawai'i. Join our conversation today with our very special guest (are there ever non-special guests ?) Dr. Shannon Holzer of Houston Baptist University. We discuss going to college in Hawai'i, grade inflation v. academic excellence, and some favorite professors. We also talk about our students. We discuss recent students versus the way students were ten years ago, grade inflation (did I mention we talk about grade inflation?), going to school in Hawai'i, what he was like as a student and a veteran of the US Marine Corps versus what more recent student trends look like, incentive structures in Higher Education and K-12, and seminary training in preparation for Ph.D. work in Constitutional Law and Philosophy. Guest bio: Professor Shannon Holzer, Ph.D. served for several years in the United States Marine Corps before going to college. Dr. Holzer has earned degrees in the areas of religion, philosophy, and politics/Constitutional Law. He earned his undergraduate degree at a small Baptist college in Hawai'i called Wayland Baptist University on the island O'ahu where he majored in Religion with a special focus on Biblical Studies. During college, Professor Holzer developed an interest in the discipline of Philosophy, and so he moved to California to earn an M.A. in Philosophy from Biola University's graduate program there, where he focused on Philosophy of Religion and Ethics at Talbot School of Theology in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Sensing a need for further training in the application of his training to areas of Constitutional Law and Politics, Dr. Holzer then moved to Texas in order to earn a Ph.D. in Religion, Politics, and Society at the world-famous J.M. Dawson Institute for Church-State Studies at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He had met the rigorous standards of multiple philosophers on his dissertation committee in which he focused specifically on philosophical (epistemological) issues in First Amendment jurisprudence and its impact on society. Shannon has a commitment to service and academic excellence which he models faithfully for his students. In addition to having served as a pastor in Hawai'i and his military service, Dr. Holzer has served in K-12 education as a public school teacher and sports coach in Los Angeles County and has taught in the community colleges and universities for many years, accumulating a rich set of experiences. He draws from this deep well of service with compassion, humility, and faithful commitment to academic excellence. Professors mentioned include Dr. Dallas Willard of USC Philosophy Department, Dr. Craig Blomberg, Dr. JP Moreland, Dr. William Lane Craig, Dr. David Ciocchi of Biola, Dr. R. Douglas Geivett of Biola, Francis Beckwith of Baylor, and Dr. David Howle of Wayland Baptist University Hawai'i, and my (Dr. Mather's) WBU Government professor on Marine Corps Station Kaneohe whose name I have forgotten. Schools mentioned include Wayland Baptist University on O'ahu, Hawai'i, Denver Seminary, Baylor University, Biola University, International College and Graduate School (Nu'uanu) off the Pali Hwy on O'ahu (upstairs from International Baptist Church) and Glendale High School (California). Churches mentioned in this episode include Hope Chapel Kaneohe and International Baptist Church just off the Pali Highway, leeward side, in the Nu'uanu valley in the Honolulu metropolitan area (Lucas' church at the time). Military bases mentioned include Hickam AFB, Marine Corps Station Kaneohe, Schofield Barracks, and Wheeler Army Airfield. Films mentioned include "From Here to Eternity."

K.P. began his Army career with the 23rd Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. After three years, he transferred to Hawaii and was eventually assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks on the north side of Oahu. On December 7, 1941, K.P. awakened to machine gun fire strafing his building and bullets pouring through the window next to his bunk. As the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they also attacked Wheeler Field, located next to Schofield Barracks, which placed K.P. in the midst of the attack.Under fire from Japanese planes, K.P. broke into the company arms room to secure machine guns and ammunition, attempting to fire on the Japanese planes. K.P. remembers the horrible damage inflicted on Pearl Harbor, Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Field and other parts of the island. ‘Pearl harbor was tore all to pieces,’ he said. ‘Just horrible.’ After the attack on Pearl Harbor, all military forces in Hawaii mobilized, not knowing whether the Japanese would return. The following year, K.P. deployed to Australia where he served in a variety of roles, including Bomb Disposal School (not one of his favorite assignments). Eventually, K.P. landed in New Guinea, fighting the Japanese throughout the island. K.P. returned to Texas just before the war ended and has been a Texas resident ever since (with the exception of a few military deployments). “The Kaizen Philosophy assumes that our way of life - be it our working life, our social life, or our home life - deserves to be constantly improved.” -Masaaki Imai   In 2021 the consumer expects more, thank goodness. We want to know who is behind the company, their why, and what they are doing for the world beyond slanging their product and services. Quick KO ethos (why I’m saying what I’m saying): 18+ years in the marketing and branding space, 12+ years of competitive CrossFit, 5 games appearances, and have worked with every major fit biz, apparel, equipment, CPG, etc. company that is out there from startups to the majors. Many laps run on and off the field:)   I came across Element 26 at CrossFit, my Dad introduced me to the grips and I was super impressed. If you CrossFit you know there is more gear than you’ll ever need… you can do more “outfit changes” before a workout than a high-end fashion model starring in a top designer’s show, showcasing an entire season. There are specific accessories for specific exercises and most of it can be useful- actually necessary is another podcast. CrossFit is a marketer’s dream, we buy EVERYTING! That being said If you are training for life aka for the long term, certain functional training tools and gear can greatly supplement the journey and protect your body for the IRL activities. The Founders of Element 26 lead with their core values, making functional training equipment for functional athletes. They’re not only working to upgrade the training tool options on the markets, they are also working to further build community, connecting with their consumers and fans. They provide a wealth of valuable content and are accessible- they are listening!! For consumers out there looking to learn to be more “picky” and vote with their dollar or business owners looking to further highlight their own core values through their business operations, this is the cast for you! Consumers, consciously spend and business owners, intentionally humanize your brand highlighting your own core values wherever possible. People care… and it inspires long-term, positive change!!   Highlights: Business and core values. Chasing the dream. Balancing a start up with life. Commitment, dedication, chasing your passions. Being a competitor and consumer in the space you work in. Quality, durable gear in the high intensity training space. Cultivating a community and making business moves with the long game in mind. Graceful disruption.   Element 26: Element 26 believes physical training is the gateway to a healthier and happier life. Our mission is to end training setbacks due to injuries and limitations of the human body. To do this, we provide functional gear to functional athletes so that they can destroy their PR’s, not their body.  Element 26 was founded by a Doctor of Physical Therapy and US Army Veteran and is a majority Veteran owned and run company. We serve you, our amazing customers first. If you have any questions or problems with any of our gear, please email us at the email address below and we will do everything we can to ensure your complete satisfaction. This week we have a real treat for you, Cheyenne Hernandez is in the house! She joined your host, Kerri Jeter for an insightful and encouraging conversation. From homeless to Hollywood bombshell....Catch Cheyenne Debut her Unstoppable Acting—from the Armed Forces to Bad-Ass Fight-Mode in Film! Cheyenne Rae Hernandez is an empowering force to be reckoned—from struggle to carving her own path through life and finding the meaning to happiness and success, despite a turbulent past. This Latina/Native American icon from El Paso, Texas, always felt that acting was her ultimate calling, even while enlisting in the Army at only 16-years old. Who knew that her journey was all part of the process in actualizing her ultimate vision that she held onto as a child. “I enlisted as a combat medic and wound up being one of the first group of females stationed in Schofield Barracks 1-14th infantry unit. I served just under 4 years. During my first year enlisted, my little brother also enlisted so that he could try to get stationed with me. He had just enlisted and was leaving for basic training in 2 weeks, when I got the call that both of my brothers were killed by a drunk driver on Christmas Eve. My whole world was shattered.” When her life felt like it was in a downward spiral, she fought to keep it together while serving her country—that was when she was injured in a terrible military vehicle accident in the Mojave Desert, which resulted in a traumatic brain injury and loss of feeling to her right hand. After being discharged, Cheyenne felt like a “a broken machine.” “I moved to Washington state until it hit me—I had put my hand on my brothers casket, and promised I would live out our dreams for the both of us. I wound up packing up and moving to Hollywood by myself and living in a car for a few of months and showered at the gym.” Despite being divorced and homeless, Cheyenne persisted and met her acting coach who asked her to audition for the film “The Tax Collector,” where she landed a leading role as the villain. She applied her extensive background from the military and performed her own stunts! After intense training in MMA, she quickly became known as a Super Weapon—she fights, falls, and can handle different weapons. She is now a blue belt in Brazilian Jujitsu, American Kenpo and study Russian Boxing as well. Action Thriller Movie The Tax Collector is an upcoming American crime thriller film written, directed, and produced by David Ayer. As an employer, how do you go about building a successful veteran hiring program at your company? As a veteran, how can you take advantage of these types of programs to put your best foot forward and get hired?  This week, Army Veteran and Head of Military and Veteran Programs at Uber Michael Pett joins FourBlock founder and host Mike Abrams to share his expertise, discuss the components of a successful veteran hiring and retention program, and provide actionable advice to both employers and veterans seeking employment. Michael joined the US Army in 1998. He was stationed in Schofield Barracks, Hawai'i with the 25th Infantry Division, where he deployed to Iraq from December 2003 through March 2005.  He served as a Casualty Operations Specialist with the 225 Forward Support Battalion. This position required him to be pushed throughout the field of operations to process wounded warriors and local nationals from point of injury to combat support hospitals located in Iraq, Germany, and the United States. After 15 years of active duty service and over 21 years of total service, Michael retired from the Illinois Army National Guard in September of 2019.  After exiting active duty, Michael joined Accenture as the North American Military Recruiting Lead. He worked tirelessly to create new initiatives focusing on the growth and professional development of student veterans, current service members, and spouses. Each tailored program provided candidates with tangible tools required to succeed in the ever-changing corporate climate. In 2016, Michael formalized a sponsorship between Accenture and FourBlock, bringing the program to Chicago.  Now at Uber, Michael serves as the Head of Military and Veteran Programs (MVP), where he has the distinct privilege of standing up the first-ever global military, veteran, and partner hiring program. This program will bring MVP talent into all lines of businesses across Uber in all the mega regions. He is currently building integration and transition tools to ensure all MVP talent has a soft place to land when they get to Uber.   Connect with Michael Pett on LinkedIn and join Uber's Military, Veteran, and Partner Recruiting group on LinkedIn. Veterans are often unprepared to return home and begin new careers. We call this the Fourth Block.  FourBlock is a national non-profit that has supported thousands of transitioning service members across the nation in beginning new and meaningful careers.  Mike Abrams (@fourblock) is an Afghanistan veteran, FourBlock founder, director of the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration, and author of two military transition books. He'll be representing the military transition perspective. Lindsey Pollak (@lindsaypollak) is a career and workplace expert and New York Times bestselling author of three career advice books. When sports shut down, we all had some downtime to refresh, but quickly we missed seeing our kids compete. Chet Arnold, the author of Bean and Baseball in Time Flies, reminds us to enjoy the journey and embrace the ups and downs. We talk about some really important ways parents can develop a positive perspective as they navigate life with their athlete. Chet and I discuss... Bean and Baseball is a book about baseball and how quickly Time Flies from the first practice to High School Graduation and the milestones in between. Tell us about why you wrote Bean and Baseball? How has baseball created a bond btw you and your son? What advice/tips would you give our sports moms/parents as they help their athletes navigate their own sports journey?   BIO Meet Chet A. Arnold I am an Army infantry Veteran, a product of Sand Hill from July 1989 through July 31, of 1992, 4/30th Infantry. Ft. Benning, Georgia, is where I grew up and put earlier lessons taught haven been raised in East Texas. Growing up in East Texas during the 70s and as a teenager in the 80s was a lot of fun. If reality shows had been a thing then, what an amazing show that would have been. Football is king in East Texas—it has always been and it will always be. A few stars emerged as baseball players in the 80s, but that was only a drop in the hat compared to football. Friday nights in Tyler, Texas, were a no brainer during the fall; football at home or on the road was the plan. High school graduation was bittersweet. I would be leaving my family and friends, and the known for the unknown. After training was complete, I was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, and I spent the next two years and nine months stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. I must have been the luckiest guy on earth. I enjoyed my time in the military, my fellow soldiers, and being a soldier. We enjoyed the service, but we loved our free time even more. We didn't get in much trouble, or at least, we didn't get caught. We held each other accountable, and that brotherhood from 1989 continues on in 2020. I raised boys. I loved our community and I loved being a part of whatever was going on. One day, my son brought a football flier home from school. Our lives would forever be changed; our weekends now belonged to Mesquite Pee Wee Football. It didn't take long before the majority of our friends became the parents of the other children. One day, a parent asked if we were available to guest play; it turns out, they had a player unavailable due to football happening during the time the baseball game was scheduled to be played. Reluctantly, we agreed to guest play. This one weekend, a chance opportunity to play, started our obsession with baseball. As a kid, I remember sitting outside on the porch with my grandfather on Walton Dr. in Tyler, Texas, in the 70s. While my grandfather listened to the game on the radio, I would hear the crack of the bat, and the cheering that immediately followed. To this day, I still get excited at the crack of the bat—unless my son is pitching. Then, all I can think of is, Don't throw it to that spot again! I am a youth baseball fan. I started writing the idea for a book, stage play, and a movie awhile ago. Baseball came to an abrupt halt in March of 2020 and like so many others I was suddenly home with nothing to do. I worked on Bean and Baseball during what would have been my office hours.

Becky Kanis Margiotta  served an 11 year career in the Army as a Signal Officer. During that time she was stationed in Ft Bragg and Schofield Barracks. She was the first female company commander of a special operations signal company supporting special forces.  In this episode we trace Becky's career back to her cadet experience and the conflict she faced as an "in the closet" gay service member. She describes the challenges she faced with "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"; as well as her advocacy as a founding member of Knights Out.  After a rocky transition out of the Army, Becky worked briefly as a stock broker where she was effective, but not fulfilled. A chance phone call to her former Sosh P COL Jay Parker landed her in a new field working to reduce street homelessness in Time Square, New York City with Community Solutions. This would be lead to an 11 year journey with community solutions that culminated with leading a national effort of 186 communities to get 100,000 people housed in four years. She was profiled on 60 minutes for her work.  Becky is the founder and CEO of The Billions Institute that is focused in training global leaders in the techniques to drive large scale change.  Its in Becky's DNA to lead, educate, support, and encourage others to go beyond the expected and the safe. She has a bias toward productive action. She sets ambitious and specific goals, with deadlines that she actually meets. She uses real-time (or as close to real-time as she can get) data to make continuous improvements. And she is always on the lookout for new and better ways to get the job done. Becky had the tools, the know-how, and the experience to show individuals and organizations what they can and must do if they want to solve problems, rather than remain an endless loop of just managing them. And, being people with a bias toward action and seemingly boundless enthusiasm, she created an organization called the Billions Institute. The kinds of problems the Institute looks to tackle—and solve—are some of the biggest and most urgent: the environment, violence, disease, and poverty. “We think that for a lot of these problems, small-scale solutions may already exist. But they're not widespread…it's a question of scale.”

We want ... to start the conversation with this current generation of military officers. The half-life of a military officer's career is pretty short The U.S. military and the militaries of many of its partner nations regard themselves as professional organizations and comrades in the profession of arms. The military is heralded as a profession composed of professionals who enact a unique domain of expert knowledge. But the meaning of this changes over time through the evolution of civil-military relations, global security, and new or emerging threats. The Army underwent a period of reflection at the turn of the century based on its Cold War experiences and renewed its commitment to professionalism. Is the time nigh for another such period? This and other questions are discussed between Ty Mayfield of Strategy Bridge and WAR ROOM's Podcast Editor Jacqueline E. Whitt.   Ty Mayfield is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force and a founding member and Editor of Strategy Bridge. Jacqueline E. Whitt is the WAR ROOM Podcast Editor. He told his story to a gathering at the Huron Elks Club in 1993. Chuck Anderson, Huron radio personality and host, recorded and preserved the speech. Isakson was serving with the 19th Regiment of the 24th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, a large Army garrison in the middle of the island of Oahu. Schofield Barracks was adjacent to Wheeler Army Airfield, one of the first sites hit in the attack. (Wheeler and the other airbases on Oahu were a priority target for Japanese pilots. The warm breezes, the crashing waves, the lovely women at “the club” and let’s not forget the never ending PK duty, scrubbing floors, pulling weeds, running laps, running up mountains. You know, the good old days on Oahu before the United States entered into World War II. In an all star production of the James Jones novel of the same name we experience the turmoil that filled the lives of a group of soldiers and civilians living on and near the Schofield Barracks in the weeks leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In what has to be one of the best all time performances in any movie, Montgomery Clift plays “Prewitt”, a young determined solider with a chip on his shoulder. Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed and Frank Sinatra round out the cast in another film directed by Frank Zinnemann. We’ve reviewed two other films directed by Frank Zinnemann, High Noon an Oklahoma. Both excellent films. So sit back and prepare for a journey From Here To Eternity. Next podcast we enter the August Is For Animation month with a list of short animated films that you can find in a playlist we’ve created on YouTube.
