Community building is an important aspect (and benefit) to sport participation. Suzy Sanchez is well-known in the sport of Weightlifting for her achievements as an athlete, coach, USAW HQ employee, and advocate for DEI in sports. In this episode, we tackle the importance of sport in youth development. The experience of competing as an international athlete helps you gain a unique perspective, and it can inform life decisions. For Suzy, this sparked her passion for advocating for athletes at all levels, especially collegiate athletes. We talk about community building and relationships that make the sport of Weighlifting fun and rewarding. We discuss the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in sports. While we traditionally think of the physical gains that we achieve through strength sports, this episode digs into the social and emotional role that strength sports play in youth development and across the lifespan. THE GRITTY DETAILS Participating in sports can be enriching beyond the identity we develop with our education and job. The secret to a long, fulfilling life is fitness AND social relationships. Building community and fostering relationships through sport can provide you with a more enriching life. Local Weightlifting State Organizations (WSOs) can partner with USAW to support everyday athletes and create access to the sport. Sport saves lives and not having access has a domino effect on marginalized groups of people. Minority populations are underserved and underrepresented in the sport. There are social, financial, and environmental barriers to participation for minority communities. Weightlifting is not always a safe space for every person. We have to acknowledge that trauma, discrimination, and racism impact people within our communities. Working toward equity and justice for marginalized communities improves sport and competition for everyone. Today we welcome back Justin Maguire. There are so many incredible options and choices for people that are Bio-hacking their way to incredible health and longevity. One challenge with this industry is that every person is little different and not all bio-hacking options will work the same for you as it does me. Enter in Justin, as he is here to help you and so many others in the world to find the very best bio-hacking options for each individual. You can even take a short 321 test to find out what works for you by clicking the link here https://www.autonomiccoaching.com/provisional-symptoms-diagnostic/ Even the best biohacking techniques and procedures can backfire and do you more harm than good! That is if you don't figure out what is RIGHT FOR YOU. Probably more so in health that in any other aspects in life, there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution! Each of us are unique – different strengths, weaknesses, physical and mental needs and wants, among other factors! What programs can help you in weight loss might not be of any help if you're planning to get ripped. Similarly, drugs and medications work wonders for the right disease, but can be harmful to you when used incorrectly. Biohacking regimes are nothing different. Justin is the Founder of Autonomic Coaching. He has meticulously studied nutrition, biochemistry and physiology since 2005, and has amassed a whole array of qualifications including certifications in hormones and performance, as well as a diploma in functional blood chemistry analysis, among others. Justin believes that choosing the right techniques and programs is key to maximizing your body's potentials. “You never want to treat a test. You want to treat the individual”, says Justin. In optimizing your program, you need to do intervals of testing, figure out objectively what has been compromised, use those tests to quantify your experiences, create an intervention protocol relevant to your experiences, and implement that protocol given a necessary time period. What tests should you subject your body to? Where should you start your biohacking journey? What other factors should you consider in augmenting your body? The end of an incredible 12-week journey training Hrithik Roshan in Mumbai has come to an end. We had many ups and downs but we ultimately got the job done. A little bit about Hrithik Roshan, he is an Indian actor who works in Hindi Films. He has portrayed a variety of characters and is known for his dancing skills. He is one of the highest-paid actors in India and he has won many awards including six filmfare awards of which four were for Best Actor. The 2003 science fiction film Koi...Mil Gaya, for which Roshan won two Filmfare Awards, was a turning point in his film career; he later starred as the titular superhero in its sequels: Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013). He earned praise for his portrayal of a thief in Dhoom 2 (2006), Mughai emperor Akbar in Jodhaa Akbar (2008) and a quadriplegic in Guzaarish (2010). He achieved further commercial success by playing the lead in the 2011 drama Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, the 2012 revenge drama Agneepath, the 2014 action thriller Bang Bang! the 2019 biopic Super 30 and the 2019 action thriller War; the lattermost ranks as his highest-grossing release. After training an incredible client over the last three months it was time for a little R&R. It was time to truly recharge and there is absolutely no better place than Bhutan. Officially known as the Kindom of Bhutan, a landlocked country in South Asia. Truly a Bio-Hackers dream. Nature at it's best. In 2014, Bhutan welcomed 133,480 foreign visitors. Bhutan is a high-value destination and few are able and willing to go to the country as it imposes a daily sustainable development fee of US$200 a day on all tourists except Indians. The hiking, the people, the culture and the environment is truly a site and experience that is second to none. ---- Follow me on Instagram and feel free to DM about 1-1 online training @krisgethin Do you need elite sports supplements you can trust to help you achieve your goals in the gym and in life? PodCrash - Talk of Champions with Philip Hindes & Callum Skinner
What does it take to be crowned the Fittest Woman on Earth? We talk to CrossFit athletes Sam Biggs and the Fittest Woman in Ireland Emma McQuaid in this episode of PodCrash. One of the most fierce competitions to have ever been created, CrossFit has taken the world by storm. Hundreds of thousands of athletes enter the five-week games each year, fighting to make it to the top position and perform in a vast array of (often obscure) fitness events they can only hope they’ve trained for. Briggs and McQuaid are two of those competitors. “You never know what they’re going to throw at you” - BriggsThis week, Olympian’s Callum Skinner and Philip Hindes quiz the pair on their journey to CrossFit success. Having competed in her first CrossFit games at the age of 27, Briggs went on to win the games at the age of 31 in 2013. Previously a firefighter, she’s completed in 6 CrossFit Games so far, with no sign of slowing down.Briggs and McQuaid relay how the sport has transformed its reputation since the early days and how a new wave of athletes are skyrocketing standards. One such example is McQuaid; who in 2019 competed in her first ever CrossFit games and became the Fittest Woman in Ireland. A former Commonwealth Games weightlifting competitor and quad bike racer, McQuaid’s meteoric rise makes her one to watch now and in the future. Can you make a living as a CrossFit athlete? We talk about the difference between the National Lottery-funded GB cycling programme and sustaining yourself as a CrossFit athlete. There’s also discussion on diet, veganism and balancing extreme training routines with everyday life. I will begin this post by acknowledging that ANY physical activity that isn’t physically harmful is good and will likely increase an athlete’s performance, and will benefit one’s overall health. Many weight rooms contain tons of machines. This might be great for the "weeknight warrior," but is it what your baseball players should be doing? There are a lot of traditional training methods that can in fact increase performance simply by increasing overall strength, and by the athlete being in better overall shape, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that those methods are the best training methods for baseball players. Players aren’t necessarily getting the best bang for their training buck (time and effort). Let's go through the "traditional" method of working out that you see at a lot of local gyms and workout facilities: Attend our FREE Web Clinic on creating strong, explosive, powerful, dynamic baseball players The Warm-Up (Movement prep) Weeknight and Saturday morning warriors at the gym show up and do a few static stretches, usually starting with hamstrings, then some quads, then some shoulder and arm stretches before they hit the weights. The reality is, static stretching, although it may feel good, and feel right, isn’t the best thing an athlete can do to warm up for maximum performance. Check out the chart below summarizing a number of studies on static stretching’s effect on athletic and explosive (which is HUGE in baseball performance) training. Table courtesy of http://www.brianmac.co.uk/articles/article027.htm Instead, try a combination of dynamic movements, agility drills, core movements, and semi-explosive movements. Even better, try drills that improve skill but can be done at less than 100% as a warm-up. TRAIN HOW YOU WILL COMPETE. Split routines A large percentage of the local gym-goers will be doing "split routines." Basically, this means that the individual will do only upper body exercises on one day, then only lower body exercises on another day, or they will only do pushing exercises one day, then pulling exercises the next, then lower body the next day. Again, generally any type of conditioning will benefit the athlete, so a split routine is better than nothing. But, when you compete in baseball (or any sport for that matter), you don't just use your upper body one day, then lower body the next day. Baseball players utilize their entire body every single day. For that reason, training should be done the same way with full body routines. The more multi-joint movements that can be included in a routine, the more closely it will mimic what they will be required to do on the field. Get more information about Cornerstone's full body workouts by checking out our 2015-2016 offseason conditioning programs here: Attend our FREE Web Clinic on creating strong, explosive, powerful, dynamic baseball players Sets and reps The standard workout for weekend warrior is 3 sets of 10 reps, and very rarely does that change. Additionally, they keep the same velocity and pace for many of their reps and very rarely switch the exercises for each muscle group. This type of training leads to plateaus in training, boredom, and sub-maximal results. In fact, baseball players ultimate goal in the weight room should be to increase their ability to generate a large amount of force in a short amount of time (power). Three sets of ten reps on the same exercises isn't likely to improve power greatly. Instead, players need to be on a periodized workout plan with different phases that address different goals (usually size and stability, strength, power/speed) to maximize the effectiveness in the weight room. Remember, the goal is not to work out longer, it's to work out smarter and maximize your results. Lots of machines Traditional weight lifting and training often consists of using resistance machines to isolate and...

I had an opportunity to sit down with Dan John at the NAKF's National Meet earlier this month. We spoke about kettlebells and how he uses them in his PE classes at Juan Diego Catholic High School. You can read more about Dan at his website danjohn.org. Listen HereSubscribe in a reader
What a weekend. I just returned from SLC after a 10 hour drive home on Sunday. I have to say it was worth it. From start to finish the NAKF's US Nationals for Kettlebell Sport was a great event to take part it.For starters, the event was very well planned and executed. Matt McNamera did a fantastic job as the host for the event, and Lorraine Patten and the rest of the NAKF crew did a good job running both a competitor friendly event, as well as one that covered all the bases. The meet was held at Juan Diego Catholic School in Draper, Utah, the home of lifting/throwing guru Dan John. It was really a fun experience to get to visit with someone whose work I've read so much of. It was also nice to see Dan throw his hat into the ring and compete with the 32kg kettlebells without specific training for the event. That takes guts, , , or a lack of good judgement. In any case, I was impressed and blown away at his gutsy performance in the snatch.I know that GS has a reputation of not being a spectator sport, and while I agree that often times watching the same movement being repeated over and over again, there is a tremendous amount of drama in the event when you see people exceeding the limits of their own ability. There were several standout performances that I'd like to make mention of. First off, the women overall did very well and several of them are pushing Master of Sport numbers. Kelly Moore, Jen Morey and Catherine Imes all did very well. Catherine snatched the 1 pood 208 times which I believe is the American Record. I'm looking forward to the US ladies taking on the Eastern Europeans this fall. For the men, David Zink kicked off the competition with the Long Cycle. He went the entire 10 minutes and put up somewhere near 76 reps in the event. A very intimidating way to kick off the meet! Marty Farrell followed up that performance by putting up 62 jerks. Considering his weight, it is a very impressive performance and shows us what one can do with good technique and hard work. Jared Savik hit a men's high of 78 jerks, and Ken Blackburn sprinted his way to 62 .Finally, perhaps the standout performance of the weekend was turned in by Andrew Durniat who we believe is the first US male to go the entire 10 minutes in the snatch, hitting 124 reps! Around minute 8, it looked like he was getting close to finishing up, but after resting in the overhead position for a few seconds, he powered through the last two minutes. Once he got to 1 minute left on the clock, you knew he was going to be able to do it. Very exciting moment for GS in the US! After his set, we were able to sit down for a few minutes and talk about the set. Some things I picked up from the competition were:The importance of the hook grip. I know we probably all have tried to do this, but after using it in my snatch set this weekend, I can't tell you how important it is. A little tip I got from Valery before my set is to chalk the fingernail on your index finger. Combined with the competition bell's smaller diameter handle and the chalk on my finger, I was able to accomplish this hold and keep it. From Jared Savik, use the first dip to "bounce" the weights off of your hips/belt/belly. In order to do this, you really need to forcibly drop your hips. I find I'm pretty soft on the first dip. Late in my set I thought about doing it the way Jared recommended, but realized, I wasn't in good enough shape to do it.The world of American Kettlebell Sport, is a dog-eat-dog world where its every man for himself. Well, not exactly. It is an extreme pleasure to get to spend time with other lifters who share the same passion for their sport and are willing to share what they know to help others. The amount of support and coaching that the competitors gave each other, regardless of level and experience was inspiring. It was a pleasure to be able to interact with people of such character and charity.Really there are too many things to list here, that I picked up, and too many people that did a fantastic job to mention them all. Be sure to go to the NAKF's website to check out the results of the US Nationals. Be sure to listen to the latest episode of the Kettlebell Lifter Podcast.Subscribe in a reader
Episode 4; April 19th, 2007; Guest Mark BoggsWell we're down to less than a month to the NAKF's national meet in Salt Lake City. I've been trying to get my weight down to 198 for a little while and I'm down to about 10 lbs left to go. I started out Jan. 15 at 234 lbs, and I've seen a real improvement in my fitness levels and appearance. On today's podcast we're going to interview Mark Boggs who has experienced a great deal of weight loss as a result of training with kettlebells.Of course we know that finding a plan that works for you, and sticking to it for the long term is the key to success in weight loss, whether that's a meal plan or exercise program. I was recently listening to a program on weight loss and the recurring theme was that there are a lot of diets that provide good results in the short term, but that adherence is the key to long term results. I think that kettlebells, if used correctly, allow you to use them for a long time. Most other forms of exercise, especially ones that can be used in as intense a manner as kettlebells, usually lead to injuries that limit or end an athletes participation in that activity. You see it in a bunch of sports. If you look at kettlebells, you can see that if you use common sense and good technique you can use them long term indefinitely. That brings me to an article that was published this past week in the New York Sun that was posted on Dragon Door's forum this week. The article tells a short story about an 85 year old Russian immigrant who lifts 80 lbs kettlebells and gave the police more than they bargained for. Besides being funny, I think it illustrates that kettlebells can be used long term for good results. If you have any feedback for us, please call 541-255-3713 and leave us a voicemail for inclusion on the program.
