POPULARITY
In this episode of DND Explained, we break down one of the most puzzling aspects of the US presidential election—how a candidate can win the presidency without securing the most votes. As the 2024 election approaches, we explore the intricacies of the Electoral College, its impact on past elections, and why the popular vote doesn't always determine the winner. Tune in to understand the mechanics behind America's unique election system and what it means for the upcoming race.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's a parallel between the Democratic National Conventions of 2024 and 1984. Forty years ago a Minnesota Democrat was at the top of a history-making presidential ticket. Former Minnesota Senator and U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale was running for president alongside Geraldine Ferraro, a U.S. representative from New York — and the first woman nominated by a major party for VP. Hillary Clinton remembered that moment Monday night in a speech at this year's DNC.Clinton drew a line from former U.S. representative Shirley Chisholm's 1972 run for president to Ferraro‘s bid for VP to her own historic race in 2016 against former President Donald Trump. And she expressed hope that Vice President Kamala Harris can become the first woman president. In Minnesota, a Harris win would also mean Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan would become the first Native American woman governor in the U.S. — and the first woman governor of Minnesota, period. Every lieutenant governor since 1983 has been a woman, across Republican, Democrat, and Independent administrations, but none have held the top job. Ember Reichgott Junge has spent her life involved in Minnesota politics. And she was also at the 1984 DNC as a young, Democratic state senator and a delegate for Minnesota. She joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to reflect on her time then — and the DNC now.

•Brother Joe May, Known as the "THUNDERBOLT OF THE MIDDLE WEST! "He was a vocalist who was compared to have similar vocal prowess as Ms. Mahailia Jackson. He was under the influence of Mother Willie Mae Ford Smith after he and his family relocated from Macon Mississippi to East St. Louis Illinois to work in a chemical plant. •He was noted as “the greatest Gospel singer of all time” which is where the title of Thunderbolt derived. Brother May had a voice of unimaginable range and power. He would take a song from a whisper to a scream without the slightest suggestion of effort. •Brother Joe may began singing at Thomas A. Dorsey's National Conventions of Gospel Choirs and Choruses directed by Mother Willie Mae Ford. In 1949 he began his solo career after signing with Specialty Records and went on to record multiple albums. He was asked multiple times to do secular recordings. He, however, would have nothing to do with secular music even though he was cited as a musical inspiration by Little Richard. •Please send me an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. At the age of 3, Yakov Horowitz lost his father. After many years of teaching, he wrote a 4,500 word essay in The Jewish Observer titled “An Ounce of Prevention” on the subject of at-risk teens in the community. The article shocked the Orthodox community and led to an invitation to address the 1996 National Conventions of Agudath Israel of America and Torah Umesorah. It also led to the founding of Project Y.E.S. in 1997, which he is the director of In 1997, Horowitz founded a yeshiva, Yeshiva Darchei Noam, for teens. He worked with teens at risk for over 30 years. He is also the founder and Director of Project Y.E.S. (Youth Enrichment Services). He was a regular columnist for The Jewish Press and Mispacha on topics including mental health, social problems, internet usage and child safety. He developed a children's book to educate children about sexual safety called "Let's Stay Safe" published by Artscroll that sold many copies. *** WELCOME TO CONVENTION WEEK, All week we will be stepping back in time to the 1972 National Conventions. This episode starts off the conventions of 1972 with the Democrats. While 1972 was not 1968, it was still a textbook example of what not to do. Poor George McGovern was in a campaign best described as "if it could go wrong it did. "He had come from out of nowhere to be the front runner for the nomination going into the convention but he still had not won it. He would wrestle with his opponents until 2:30 am the night of his nomination. In the meantime, he had to make a Vice Presidential nomination and he chose a well liked Senator Thomas Eagleton of Missouri. That would be the ticket to face Nixon and Agnew in 1972. It would have a rather shocking end before it ever really got started. But in this episode we will see the various issues of the convention, and hear from Thomas Eagleton as he accepts the nomination. ***** Ranked number 17 as one of the 60 best American History podcasts of 2022 by Feedspot.comhttps://blog.feedspot.com/american_history_podcasts/

Host: Diane Gil Co-Host: KeKey Huessein Episode Introduction: In today’s episode of the Now What Podcast, Diane is joined by her co-host KeKey to talk about the purpose and history of National Conventions. Episode Summary: Both Diane and KeKey share their personal highlights from the 2020 National Conventions. The episode is packed with noteworthy observations and strong opinions. Notable Facts: September, 1831: Anti-Masonic Party held the first National Presidential Nominating Convention. Back in the time, there were no elections held before the convention and the candidate was selected during the convention. Conventions are designed to sell a specific candidate and give them the opportunity to talk to the masses about their agenda and position on issues. Voters can make an informed decision by hearing the party’s agenda in these conventions. Voters also get to understand what the party’s 5 year and 10 year plans look like. Highlights From The Conventions: The DNC covered issues like a plan to address Covid-19, $15 minimum pay increase, healthcare reforms, and other real life issues. DNC activated the spirit of healing and unity that every American is feeling. There were a significant number of lifelong Republicans at the DNC who endorsed Joe Biden over Donald Trump. Barack Obama spoke about the expectations of leadership in Democracy. Obama believes that Donald Trump has misused and abused the office of Presidency to help him and his friends enrich themselves. RNC nominated Donald Trump as the president. Donald Trump avoided every issue people of colour are facing in America during the RNC. RNC saw a lack of diversity. Black and brown faces were amplified but their thoughts weren’t. RNC took a very aggressive tone. Many speakers spoke directly against peaceful protests. Call To Actions: Make sure you’re registered to vote. www.vote.org Make sure adults around you, friends and family are registered to vote. Consider being a poll worker to ensure fair voting. The National Conventions are over and both President Trump and Former Vice President Joe Biden plan to pick up the pace on the campaign trail. On the other hand President Trump is doubling down on increasing violence and crime and repeating the claim that Biden wants to defund the police. Tom Bevan, Co-Founder and President of RealClearPolitics discusses both the DNC and RNC, the civil unrest happening across the country and how this campaign compares to 2016. They made a dynasty out of duck hunting and brought America along for the ride in the swamps of Louisiana. Now the patriarch of the “Duck Dynasty” family is sharing what he and his family have been doing since the popular show ended. Phil Robertson discusses his book “Jesus Politics: How to Win Back the Soul of America” and what it was like filming the popular show now available for streaming on FOX Nation. This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Maria Nieva, chair of the Asian Pacific Musicians Interest Section. I must share that I’ve always admired the sense of community in the Asian Pacific Musicians Interest Section. They are always so active at the National Conventions, attending events together and even eating meals together! It was a pleasure to hear from Maria about her interest section and what we can take away from their community, their culture and their musical heritage.

Donald Trump is currently complaining about how Republican delegates and presidential candidates are selected during Republican State and National Conventions. He says it's a rigged system! It wasn't until 100 years ago that Vermont held its first primary and allowed citizens to choose their candidates. 112 years ago this week 560 Republican insiders met in Burlington and chose Theodore Roosevelt as their candidate. Here's the story...
