In Conversation with Niamh Dunne at Goderich 2024. Niamh Dunne is an accomplished violin player and singer, who is known for her folk infused fiddle compositions and smoky warm vocal style.
In July we're joined by Niamh Dunne to chat about the highs and lows of a career in music, the value of vulnerability in art, and her latest project which involved traveling the length of the country with two pipers, her dad Mickey Dunne and Paddy Keenan of the Bothy Band, exploring and celebrating Traveler heritage through their documentary project The Long Grazing Acre. Niamh is an accomplished fiddle player and singer. ‘Tides', her first album of self-penned songs was released in 2022 to widespread critical acclaim. She is a member of the group, Beoga whose album ‘How to Tune a Fish' was shortlisted for a Grammy nomination in the ‘Best Contemporary World Music Album' category. In 2017 Beoga collaborated with Ed Sheeran on his ‘÷' album and later that year, the band performed with Sheeran during his headline Glastonbury performance. Niamh is a long-standing member of The Karan Casey Band and she has accumulated vast experience as a composer, performing her own compositions and songs at The Proms in the Park with The Ulster Orchestra, and with the RTÉ concert Orchestra in the National Concert Hall. Niamh Dunne is currently the 2024 Arts Council / UCC Traditional Artist in Residence. As part of the role, Niamh delivers a series of concerts, workshops, and events throughout the UCC campus community during the course of her one-year residency. https://www.niamhdunne.com/ https://twitter.com/niamhdunnemusic https://www.facebook.com/NiamhDunnefiddle/ The Limerick Lady is a grassroots movement based in Limerick, Ireland, with a focus on promoting conversation around gender, visibility, gender balance and the arts. Andrew and I were practicing daily on the South Mall of the university as the Brobdingnagian Bards. So we were there as a bunch of students ran through the school shouting and waving signs about the oppression of pants. The event resonated with me because, well, we wore kilts at all of our shows. We were “pantless” too. The event spread to other locations around the nation and eventually the world. But it took me four years before I wrote “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day”, a parody of the traditional Scottish song “Jock Stuart”. Instead of “a man you don't meet every day”, my song was about a man who loved wearing kilts, like I did. I didn't stop there. Again, I felt like No Pants Day was a Scottish holiday. So I decided to create a backstory for my song. I wanted people to think that the origins of No Pants Day was actually a Scottish holiday called No Troosers Day. I researched Scottish history and learned about the Proscription Act of 1746. This act banned the Scots from wearing “highland clothing”. The goal of course was to assimilate the Scots into Great Britain, just like the Disarming Act banned the Scottish from wearing weapons. From that base, I wrote a fictional history of an uprising in Glasgow where the Scots removed their trousers and donned their kilts and rewrote “Jock Stuart” to celebrate their love of the kilt and their culture. The best thing about this fictional history was that a few years later, a newspaper in Canada quoted the blog where I shared this fake history saying that this was ACTUALLY the origins of No Pants Day. This should serve as a reminder to all of us. Check your sources! I finally recorded this song in 2009 for my CD, Kilted For Her Pleasure. “Jock Stuart (A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day)” lyrics by Marc Gunn, May 6, 2004, music traditional Oh my name is Jock Stuart, I´m a trooser-less man And my roving young fellows move freely * So be easy and free in nae boxers or briefs I´m a man who wears a kilt every day. I'm Highlander made and a piper to trade And the tartan is me flag that I wear. I go out with my gun and my dog for to hunt Try to make me wear troosers, and you'll pay. I've got acres of land, I've got ships to command So burn your pants on No Troosers Day So come fill up my glass with whiskey or rum Then send o'er your lass and you'll see. It's better easy and free in nae boxers or briefs I'm a man who wears a kilt every day. 20:52 - Marc Gunn “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day” from Kilted For Her Pleasure 23:40 - JOIN THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. It also lasts pretty much forever. It is virtually impossible to remove it entirely from what I buy. But I have found a few items that I enjoy that are not that I thought I'd share. Did you know you can buy shampoo and conditioner in bar form? This was one of those weird rabbit holes I went down. Once upon a time, we didn't have liquid shampoo and conditioner. It certainly wasn't in a big plastic bottle. A day after I started researching this a few months back, Gwen came home with a Love Beauty and Planet shampoo conditioner bar from Target. I immediately tried it out and loved it. You can see a list of Shampoo and Conditioner bars here. My favorite body soap is the Dr Bronner's Lavender soap. I was starting to lament losing that when I just saw they have bar soap also. And of course, all of those are wrapped in paper and I can get it at my local Publix. 34:58 - Marc Gunn “Kilty Pleasure” from Selcouth 38:59 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Pub Songs & Stories. The poem is titled “A Returned Soldier's Lament” I've renamed the song 1924 partly because I have made small changes to the text - and have added a verse, but also the date is really significant to the meaning of the words. The poem references WW1 from that date: being 6 years after the war ended, 9 years after the majority of the ANZAC troops joined the war and 8 years after their greatest involvement and losses both at Gallipoli and all along the Western front. Oh - and it's going to be on our next duo album that will be out sometime this year. Caveat warning, however; - we're so busy doing a load of other things - including the beginnings of a new Purcells Polyphonic Party album as well as festivals and folk clubs and recording for TV and games…. that any plan for launching is going to have to be quite vague. 44:20 - Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer "1924" 50:12 - THANKS 51:48 - Paddyman "The Best Pub Party in the World" from One for the Road 54:36 - Kellys Wayke "Walk the Mile" from Kellys Wayke 58:10 - the commoners "What's Your Whiskey For" from What's Your Whiskey For 1:01:42 - Michael Maloney "'Round the Mountains of Mourne" from January Hopeful 1:05:32 - CLOSING 1:07:11 - The Druids "South Australia" 1:09:35 - CREDITS The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn, The Celtfather and our Patrons on Patreon. This St. Patrick's day I don't really have plans but will definitely have corned beef for supper. I may get ambitious and make a coddle or stew at some point. I have always heard that you don't choose Ireland. Ireland chooses you and that's my case. I am an Irish descendent but have never been to Ireland. I eat up all I can about it I.e. the language, music, movies and pictures and culture. I celebrate Ireland every day " Marguerite Kearns replied: "I am just listening to the content of your songs and music. Doing nothing else. Some things don't fit well with multitasking...you fit into that category. Onward" Michael Corbett emailed: "Hi Marc! This is Michael from Seldom Sober. You were a great supporter of ours when we released our last CD in 2019. I'm sorry to tell you that Colleen, the other half of Seldom Sober, is having health problems. It would really lift her spirits for you to play one of her tune sets. Since our last CD was 4 years ago it doesn't get much attention anymore, but she loves hearing that we're being played around the world. We were actually big in New Zealand when the CD first came out. Just let me know which episode it's on. She knows I listen to your podcast, so I'll just tell her I heard it Thanks for your consideration! Please keep up the good work! Earlier this week, while touring New Orleans, Irish American and Chicago South Sider, Marty Sammon, passed away at the young age of 45, a day after his birthday. With grandparents on both sides hailing from Ireland, Marty embraced his Irish roots learning Irish polkas and reels on the piano but migrated towards his true love of the blues. At an early age, Marty's parents realized his immense talent and Marty began performing for many blues greats. In addition to releasing his own solo album recorded live at the Kingston Mines in Chicago, Marty was the keyboardist for guitar blues legend, Buddy Guy. Marty passed away the morning after performing his last show at the Maple Leaf in New Orleans, a city he loved almost as much as Chicago.Barry Mohan, guitarist and singer from the group, All Folk'd Up, died tragically in a an auto accident in Ireland earlier this week. Barry was in the prime of his career and left us at a very young age of 28 years. We feature new music from Brona McVittle, The Mary Wallops, Niamh Dunne, Character Fleadh, Dublin Irish Trio, Rufus Nightjar, Lyra, Lisa Hannigan and a new release from Murphy's Lawyer. It's all right here on Windy City Irish Radio. Tune in live on globalirishradio.com or tune in on 750AM WNDZ Chicago.

We've donated over over $45,000 since I started this podcast in 2005. This year, I picked IrishFest Atlanta to be the recipient of our donation. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast is a proud sponsor of the festival. IrishFest Atlanta was launched in November 2013 to promote the culture of Ireland through the country's traditional music, song, dance, and language. The vision of IrishFest Atlanta's original founders was to create a weekend of cultural performances, lectures, and workshops in a festive environment appealing to community members of all ages and varying familiarity of all things Irish. So each week from now until the festival takes place November 4 - 5, 2022, I'm gonna play music from an artist performing at the festival. Tickets are now on sale. You can see a list of performance times and workshops on the festival website at IrishFestAtlanta.org. We are enjoying the music of the women of Celtic music this week on the podcast. There are some who continue to devalue women and strip them of their rights. But this podcast believes strongly that women too need representation. That's why I play at least one podcast a quarter highlighting the women of Celtic music. And I'll be honest. That's not nearly enough. FairPle is an organization based in Ireland that seeks to achieve gender balance in the production, performance, promotion, and development of Irish traditional and folk music. They advocate for equal opportunity and balanced representation for all. A recent look at the top festivals in Ireland revealed that less than a quarter of all musicians featured at festivals were women. Headliners are even less. And I get it. Again, I do this feature on women in Celtic music every quarter. That's not a lot. I hope to increase the number of these shows and to continue to highlight Celtic women. But it's a tough process with my time constraints. If you have ideas or suggestions or want to help, make something happen, please drop me a line. And make sure you sign up for the FairPle.com website for more details about the work they are doing. She had found a kitten in the engine compartment of her truck. A tiny, terrified, little thing we figured was about 7 weeks old. The neighbor couldn't keep her (allergies), so we took her in. On the way to her doctor's appointment I played the show, hoping to calm her down. It did not work. Aside from a minor ear infection, and being a bit thin for her age, she was given a clean bill of health. I now have a new baby, little Minka. And thank the gods, she's finally putting on some weight. And I think she likes the show, since when I was cooking recently she tried to climb up my leg. But really that was either your playlist or the bacon. Any way, your work has been the soundtrack for the arrival of a new bundle of joy into my life. I will try to send a picture of sweet Minka." Stephen Dunford emailed: “Happy July/ End of Pride Month. Hi Marc, Thank you for a great show, Love the music and love the vibe. Listening to your podcast got me through the pandemic with a smile on my face. Ha What am I doing today? Well... I am listening to your podcast while working from home. I started listening to your podcast while I was working in the office in a different career in fashion, as mentioned before your podcast helped me sort some things out about what I truly enjoy in music and life. Music gives life - if you get my drift. Since then I switched careers in UX design which allows me to work remotely where I can listen to your music freely around the house wherever I want. Anyhow, my hubby and I are going to Ireland, Scotland, and England for our delayed honeymoon at the end of August. We are calling it "Discovering our roots". Since I am of English Irish descent and he is American of Scottish/ mixed descent. We can't wait. Needless to say, I will be on the lookout for local music, but in the meantime, we will be listening to your podcast along the winding roads of our ancestors. Take care and thanks for your podcast.” Woodland Folk emailed photos of Courting and TREES And finally, here's a run I did while listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, on my way to Indianapolis.
Karan Casey Does Singing Songs Make a Difference? This episode is a recording of Karan Casey's keynote presentation at the close of the conference of the European Music Therapy Confederation in Edinburgh, 8-12 June 2022. Karan talked about songs and social justice, arts practice research, and about her own life and experiences as a performer and campaigner on social issues. She performed a number of songs as part of the presentation, and then had a conversation with Luke Annesley to explore these issues further. It was an inspiring ending to a varied and exciting conference. About Karan: Singing songs charged with a sense of social responsibility in a career spanning over 25 years Karan Casey has released eleven albums as well as contributing to numerous other artists' projects – appearing on more than 50 albums in total. She has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan, performing with her own band as well as collaborating with such diverse musicians as Maura O'Connell, James Taylor, Bela Fleck, Boston Pops Orchestra, Kate Ellis, Niall Vallely, Pauline Scanlon, The Chieftains, The Dubliners, Peggy Seeger, Karen Matheson, Mick Flannery, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Tim O'Brien, Solas and Lúnasa. In 2018 Karan helped found FairPlé which is an organization aimed at achieving fairness and gender balance for female performers in Irish traditional and folk musics. Karan tours with her band Niamh Dunne, Sean Óg Graham and Niall Vallely. Karan's most recent album Hieroglyphs That Tell the Tale was released on the Vertical Records Label. Her song “Down in the Glen” was nominated for Best Original Folk Song at the RTE Folk Awards 2019 and she completed a PhD in music in 2019. Karan has recently performed her new show with Director Sophie Motley called I Walked into My Head which was premiered at the Kilkenny Arts Festival 2021. Karan is currently working on a new stage show to be produced at the Everyman Theatre in Cork in early 2023 as well as an album of new songs about women in the Irish revolutionary period. Please note: As we are awaiting permission to include the performance of 'The King's Shilling' in this episode, here is a YouTube link to Karan's studio version of the song. Reviews of Karan's music: "Karan Casey's latest album is revelatory. She's always been a singer of songs that tell a story and show their muscle…This is a strikingly three-dimensional work that stands the test of intensive and repeated listening with ease. A vivid and dazzling snapshot of Casey invincible, at the height of her powers.” Siobhán Long, Irish Times “Casey's voice is among the loveliest in folk music and she's a wonderful interpreter of both contemporary and traditional material.” BOSTON GLOBE “Karan Casey's latest solo venture is a thing of rare beauty.” SING OUT "The most soulful singer to emerge in Irish traditional music in the past decade." THE GLASGOW HERALD “If ever any doubt existed about who's the best Irish traditional woman singer today, "Exiles Return" sweeps aside all pretenders…Karan Casey has no vocal peer.” IRISH ECHO Songs Siúil a Rúin (trad.) Don't hire with any master till you know what your work will be You will rise up early from the clear day light till the dawn and you never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn. Rise up, gallant Sweeney, and give your horse some hay And give them a good feed of oats before they stray away Don't feed them on soft turnip put them out on your green lawn Or they never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn. My curse upon you, Sweeney boy, you have me nearly robbed You're sitting by the fireside with your dúidín in your gob You're sitting by the fireside now from clear daylight till the dawn And you never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn My shoes they are worn and my stockings they are thin My heart is always trembling for fear they might give in My heart is always trembling from the clear daylight till the dawn And I never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn. I wish the Queen of England she would call for me in time And place me in some regiment all in my youth and prime I'd fight for Ireland's glory from the clear daylight till dawn And I never would return again to plough the Rocks of Bawn. Ballad of Accounting In the morning we built the city In the afternoon walked through its streets Evening saw us leaving We wandered through our days as if they would never e All of us imagined we had endless time to spend We hardly saw the crossroads And small attention gave To landmarks on the journey from the cradle to the grave, cradle to the grave, cradle to the grave Did you learn to dream in the morning? Abandon dreams in the afternoon? Wait without hope in the evening? Did you stand there in the traces and let them feed you lies? Did you trail along behind them wearing blinkers on your eyes? Did you kiss the foot that kicked you? Did you thank them for their scorn? Did you ask for their forgiveness for the act of being born, act of being born, act of being born? Did you alter the face of the city? Did you make any change in the world you found? Or did you observe all the warnings? Did you read the trespass notices did you keep off the grass? Did you shuffle off the pavement just to let your betters pass? Did you learn to keep your mouth shut, Were you seen and never heard? Did you learn to be obedient and jump to at a word, jump to at a word, jump to at a word? Did you ever demand any answers? The who, the what or the reason why? Did you ever question the setup? Did you stand aside and let them choose while you took second best? Did you let them skim the cream off and then give to you the rest? Did you settle for the shoddy? Did you think it right To let them rob you right and left and never make a fight, never make a fight, never make a fight? What did you learn in the morning? How much did you know in the afternoon? Were you content in the evening? Did they teach you how to question when you were at the school? Did the factory help you grow, were you the maker or the tool? Did the place where you were living Enrich your life and then Did you reach some understanding of all your fellow men, all your fellow men, all your fellow men? I'm Still Standing Here See these lines upon my face They're a map of where I've been In the deep they are traced a deeper life has settled in How do we survive living out our lives I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here See these marks upon my skin They're the lyric of my life Every story that begins Means another ends in sight Only lover's understand Skin just covers who I am I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here See these bruises see these scars Hieroglyphs that tell the tale You can read them in the dark Through your fingertips like braille I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here

https://wittmbts3.godaddysites.com/ https://workflowy.com/s/social-media-for-wit/HfbK3lDslOAee3SM It was based on the fiddle player in Beoga, Niamh [Dunne]. She's married to an Irishman, a friend of mine. I had the band in my house for an extra day so I was like, 'what can I write about? She plays the fiddle in an Irish band... right, cool, let's write a song about that.' She inspired the first line but the rest of the song isn't about anyone, I just made up a story." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wittmbtsofficial/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wittmbtsofficial/support
Conor Tallon met up with William Hammond in a socially distant 'Backyard' interview..to discuss how this year's festival has been reimagined... Behind closed doors ..well..mostly! There are some live gigs going! The 41st Cork Folk Festival runs from 30 September - 4 October with key anchor events taking place behind closed doors. As part of a re-imagined festival, over 20 concerts, launches, walks and workshops are planned, including free live streaming of two concerts from the Cork Opera House featuring top folk musicians. One of Ireland's most exciting traditional music groups, The Bonny Men and Cork's own distinguished songwriter, John Spillane performing with Dingle songstress Pauline Scanlon, are among the artists invited to take part in the one-off virtual concerts — held without audiences — on 2 and 3 October. Produced by Aniar TV, these concerts will be streamed live on TG4's social platforms and broadcast on TG4 television at a later date. Further details are available at corkfolkfestival.com. Festival Organiser, William Hammond said: “In our four decades of running the festival, there has never been a year quite like this. Similar to so many cultural events across the country, we needed a solution — that kept both audiences and musicians safe but still celebrated the beauty of folk music. The programme for our 41st edition of the Festival, which we are calling Festival Behind Closed Doors, is about bringing people together — virtually and in small numbers — to celebrate the extraordinary work of musicians who have provided solace and joy in recent months.” Along with the live streaming from the Cork Opera House stage — which will also include performances from The Lee Valley String Band; Karen Casey with Niamh Dunne and Sean Óg Graham; Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Nia Byrne and Manus Lunny; and Strung with Maria Ryan, Lucia Mac Partlin, Maria O'Connor and Aonghus McCarthy — across the two nights, smaller concerts will also take place. The line-up includes a mix of up-and-coming talent and more seasoned stalwarts. The Cork Folk Festival, funded by Cork City Council, will see singer/songwriter Leah Sohotra and multi-instrumentalist Martin Leahy perform at the Kino on 1 October. There will two concerts — 6.30pm and 8.30pm — on 2 October — from family trio Greenshine with Martin Leahy at the Triskel Arts Centre. Singer songwriter Anna Mieke will also perform at the Kino that day. A fundraiser — Performing A Night for Ron — takes place on 4 October for Fermoy musician Ron Kavana, who is currently receiving dialysis. Singer Katie Theasby joins Dave Saunders and Alan Wallace at the Kino, with limited tickets available. This event is one of four intimate concerts taking place in the Kino on 4 October, with a fiddle concert featuring Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Nia Byrne, Seamus Sands and Garry... The lads are joined by Hoge's childhood friend, the extraordinarily talented Niamh Dunne, to discuss the life of a globe-trotting musician.
