India has long been a tea-drinking nation, but in recent years, a new wave of craft beverage brands has started reshaping the way the country drinks. Specialty coffee, kombucha, and premium mixers are carving out space in an industry dominated by mass-produced options. While the demand for high-quality, homegrown beverages is growing, breaking into this space isn't as easy as it looks. Import duties drive up costs, fragmented supply chains make scaling difficult, and price-sensitive consumers often hesitate to pay a premium. Unlike mass-market beverages, where marketing muscle can drive sales, craft brands have to build awareness, educate consumers, and create demand from scratch. In episode #22 of “WTF Is” Podcast, Nikhil Kamath sits down with some of the biggest names in India's craft beverage industry—Rahul Reddy (Subko), Matt Chitharanjan (Blue Tokai), Aneesh Bhasin (Svami), and Adithya Kidambi (Mossant). They share their journey of navigating regulations, shifting consumer habits, and competing with legacy brands to bring high-quality, locally made beverages to the mainstream. India has had a long, colourful, and mixed history with Liquor over the centuries, with ancient fermented drinks and traditional liquors like feni and toddy. India today, holds the third-largest market for alcoholic beverages globally, which is remarkable given the challenging business environment of red tape-ism, varying excise duties across states and much more. In episode #18 of “WTF is” Podcast, we have Founders of different sectors in the Liquor Industry of India. Abhishek Khaitan, MD of Radico Khaitan, One of the oldest and largest manufacturers of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) in India; Minakshi Singh, Co-founder of SideCar, India's only entry in the top 100 of the World's Best Bars; Shuchir Suri, Co founder of Gin Explorer's Club, India's biggest gin festival with a footfall of over 100,000 people per edition; and Suraj Shenai, Founder of Goa Brewing Co, crafting ‘non-conformist, modern' beers that challenge the traditional dominance of German and Belgian flavours. What challenges India may face at Davos?

Business Standard Podcast

The effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict are being felt at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos. The political and business leaders of the world are anxious about Europe's economic future. Meanwhile, energy shortages and the spectre of economic recession have created a sense of gloom among many business leaders.   Other investment destinations are also looking uncertain. But, India has emerged as a region of both economic dynamism and political stability. Keen to capitalise on this prevailing mood, India is drawing the attention of global leaders to its reformist decisions and the fast pace at which new unicorns are being minted in the country. Global investors are also keenly assessing what the Indian delegation is bringing to the table at Davos. Taking place after a two-year pandemic-led hiatus, the ongoing World Economic Forum meeting is now looking at a different world than the last one was. And, that's a reason for India to find itself in a sweet spot.   According to Shyam Saran, Former Foreign Secretary and Senior Fellow, CPR, Chinese President Xi Jinping was the focus of Davos summit two years ago. Xi Jinping had then presented China as a champion of free trade, while the US under Donald Trump was seen to be on the other side of the fence. But China is not present at the current Davos summit and is on the back foot. Focus has thus shifted to India, says Saran, and India enjoys a potential interest as an alternate investment destination. This has led to the rise of the ‘China+1' model So, what is the message that India wants to get across at Davos?     According to Pranjal Sharma of Business Standard, India is presenting itself as a stable, dynamic and growing emerging market at Davos. This is in contrast to the troubles in Europe and the US due to the Ukraine war. He says, the idea is to attract investors worried by the uncertainty in markets and rising inflation. State govts and Centre are aligned in their goal to present ‘Brand India' assertively at Davos.   Sharma says India is showcasing the growth of its legacy companies and the continuous profits earned by global companies manufacturing in India. India is also advertising the rise of unicorns in the country, he points.    As reported by Business Standard, India has adopted a strategy at Davos that is different from previous years. The delegation, led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, is focused on improving internal coordination. “India's legacy business leaders are mixing with young unicorn founders like Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha, Prashant Pitti of Easemytrip; Ashish Singhal of CoinSwitch and Vidit Atrey of Meesho. This is the first Davos outing for many young entrepreneurs,”  Pranjal Sharma says, from Davos.    Before the start of the conference, Goyal had invited all delegates to share their views on India's positioning. The feedback from the meeting was then incorporated into India's stance and strategy. A microsite dedicated to India was also created as a resource centre. Goyal's team at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Invest India officers and members of the Confederation of Indian Industry are coordinating with state governments to craft a common response on several crucial issues.  Goyal's ministry is sharing briefing notes with all delegates on issues like, wheat exports and the government's flagship production-linked incentive schemes. To ensure least-possible confusion about trade and investment numbers, the latest figures have also been made available. Meanwhile, foreign investors are reportedly fleeing China. As a recent report by The Economist says, Chinese President Xi Jinping's policies are having a ‘profound' and ‘painful' impact on the markets. On the other hand, while India's growth forecast for FY23 has been slashed in recent days, it has retained its status as an economic bright spot. So, could something possibly go wrong? Well, there

Indian market might have hit $3 trillion with respect to market cap and is on the verge of hitting record highs, but Nikhil Kamath, one of India's youngest self-made billionaires remains cautious and remain 60% hedged in his fund, he told us in a D-Street Talk podcast. Kamath who is also a Co-founder and CIO, True Beacon and Zerodha said that we are not adding significant long positions at this point in time, and are ensuring that we have sufficient hedges at play each time we add a longer build on our Long's. Edited excerpts:- Q) We are on the verge of crossing previous record highs, and the star performers are mid & smallcaps which touched record highs. BSE Mcap touched $ 3 trn mark. Does the euphoria make you cautious or bullish at current levels? A) We continue to remain cautious. As a fund, we have in fact increased our hedging component from 50% to 60%. There is a lot of pain on the ground, and stock prices have not been reflecting the actual pain for a long time. We have continued to remain hedged. But, we continue with our conviction of prices being expensive, and we will retain hedges of 50% to 60% in the foreseeable future as well. Q) What is the kind of COVID impact you have seen on the AIF industry? A) Last month was bad. April, March was very slow, but May seems to be a lot better for us. Investors are not keen on investing at this point in time. Investors are coming in May, but they didn't come in April as well as March. But, if you were to look at the market activity and how the rally has continued, people are bullish. I think they're (investors) are looking beyond the pandemic. They are considering a scenario where we are Corona-free. And, if we were to mimic the West in a certain way, where they're seeing increased consumption after opening up, investors could be playing that theme.Q) Tell us more about First Operational Hedge Fund for Strategic Global Investors in India. A) It went live about a fortnight ago now. True Beacon Global, it's a fund based out of GIFT City in Gujarat. It has favorable taxation and is very attractive for foreign investors looking to invest in India. It removes the middlemen in many ways such as countries that are generally sitting in between like Singapore or Mauritius or Luxembourg. Traditionally, foreign investors picked to come into the country through these feeder vehicles, which were these countries. But, now the government has done away with the inefficiencies around them coming in directly. Going forward, they should bring a lot more foreign institutional money into India, and directly.Q) Any ballpark number that you have in mind? A) In our fund, we're expecting say Rs 1,000 crores to start off within the next 6 to 12 months. But, as an industry, we are the first fund to be operational in GIFT City. Slowly more people will come in there and replicate and start their own funds. So, as a jurisdiction, I think it will bring many billions of dollars into the public equity ecosystem in India.Q) Re-opening of economies in western countries are lifting hopes of global economic recovery. In India as well, fall in cases has also lifted sentiment of gradual opening up of states. How should one play the unlock trade? A) If you were to follow patterns globally, hotels are doing very well, travel is doing well, restaurants are doing well. Consumer spending is doing well. I would expect a lot of the same to be mimicked in India. So, buying domestic businesses which are in these sectors could be a good idea. Consumer spending which has artificially stayed low because of the pandemic and stores being shut -- I think there will be a significant spike. So, you could think of anything from a PVR because people will want to go to the movies more. In the restaurant chain, people might go back and favor auto companies and buy a lot of automobiles. So, all of these sectors I think can be played in a post-pandemic trade. Q) What is your investment mantra during turbulent times like these? What is the secret formulae which you use while picking stocks even when there is uncertainty? A) Well, we continue to hold a capital preservation outlook. We are focused on the fact that even today, even with the pain on the ground markets are frothy at 40 times multiples. We are not adding significant long positions at this point in time. We are ensuring that we have sufficient hedges at play each time we add a longer build on our Long's. And, I guess for us as a fund where capital preservation is the most important criteria we will continue to invest in that manner. Kamath, who dropped out of school at 15, grew up in a middle class family with a banker father and music teacher mother. A former chess champion he worked at a call center in his youth and a stockbroking company for three years, saving up a princely sum of about $190,000. Nikhil's companies have responded to the the Covid-19 crisis in India with humanitarian relief efforts that include ambulance services. He said the crisis is real and tragic and has touched many lives. Every possible relief effort must be made as a matter of urgency to help the sick and ailing during this crisis in India. But he also notes that the full scale of the tragedy is misrepresented in the media from the global reporting to local reports. "The truth lies in between somewhere," he told a reporter.
