Jesse answers listener questions on financial planning, investment management, and retirement. He discusses the challenges of rising homeowner's insurance costs in high-risk areas, the differences between Treasuries, CDs, and high-yield savings accounts, and the inefficiencies of using life insurance for tax-free retirement. He advises Casey, a future retiree, on tax-efficient withdrawal strategies and investment choices, and guides Chris, a federal worker, on pension decisions, TSP management, and career changes. Jesse also addresses Rachel's concerns about bond funds versus individual bonds, explaining their similarities and recommending a goals-based portfolio approach with cash reserves and an appropriate bond allocation for retirement security. Throughout the episode, he emphasizes strategic financial planning and adaptability in decision-making. Key Takeaways:• Homeowner's insurance costs are rising in high-risk states like California and Florida due to natural disasters. • We explore the ethical dilemma over whether wealthy homeowners should receive government aid after disasters. • Treasuries, CDs, and high-yield savings accounts differ in liquidity, risk, and how financial institutions set rates. • Permanent life insurance strategies like whole life and indexed universal life are marketed as tax-free retirement solutions but are often inefficient. • When planning your retirement, future required minimum distributions (RMDs) should be considered, as pre-tax accounts will be taxed upon withdrawal. • Career risk should be assessed by weighing long-term benefits against short-term uncertainties, emphasizing planning and adaptability. Using tract-level Census data and triple difference estimators, the authors test whether firms increase their use of part-time workers when faced with capped wage subsidies. By limiting the maximum subsidy per worker, such subsidies create incentives for firms to increase the share of their payroll that is eligible for the subsidy by increasing use of part-time or low-wage workers. Results suggest that firms located in federal Empowerment Zones in the United States responded to the program's capped wage subsidies by expanding their use of part-time workers, particularly in locations where the subsidy cap is likely to bind. There is also a shift toward hiring lower-skill workers. Authors: Elvery, Joel A., C. Lockwood Reynolds, and Shawn M. Rohlin.

In our fast-paced world, balancing the demands of work and family life can feel like a juggling act. However, more and more moms are discovering that part-time work can be a great way to find that balance. Did you know that the number of part-time workers has been steadily increasing? Follow our show wherever you get your podcasts: https://link.chtbl.com/JoH0AMKR Interested in exploring non-clinical careers and unique side gigs in medicine? During the peri-retirement period, doctors may find themselves contemplating retirement or looking for ways to reduce their clinical workload. Engaging in part-time or side gigs can provide a gradual off-ramp from full-time clinical practice, allowing individuals to adjust to a new lifestyle without the sudden loss of income. Dr. John Jurica, a Medical Director, blogger, podcaster, and Certified Physician Executive with expertise in non-clinical careers and side gigs, described various part-time and side gig opportunities physicians can explore during this time. These options range from remote work in fields like medical writing, chart reviews, and medical device regulatory consulting to more hands-on roles like medical legal pre-litigation consulting. These opportunities not only offer financial stability but also allow individuals to continue utilizing their medical expertise in different capacities. “Even people, as they approach retirement, some of them have been half burned out or mostly burned out and just haven't really done anything about it. To me, we have a bunch of people that just leave medicine and do things, but there's a lot of jobs that they go to, at least a subset of those, that they're part-time. They can be done part-time at the beginning and become full-time. I think there's an option to just do the in-between and try something and see if you like it.” - John Jurica MD Episode highlights: Challenges of transitioning from active practice Rise of virtual platforms for part-time work Social security disability chart reviews Collaborative roles with non-physician providers Medical device regulatory consulting Medical-legal pre-litigation consulting Legacy and life purpose post-retirement Resources: Ideal Physician Job Search Formula https://www.thehappymdacademy.com/store/hUXKudq8 Nonclinical Career Summit Clinical Practice: Make It Great or Move On: https://www.nonclinicalcareersummit.com/ Connect with Dr. Jurica: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-jurica/ Website: https://nonclinicalphysicians.com/ Watch this episode on Youtube: https://youtu.be/8gjkeaMFK7Y ------------ Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD: https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond Contact Dr. Drummond Email: support@thehappymd.com Phone: 206-430-1905 Web contact form: https://www.thehappymd.com/contact ----------- We would love to hear your feedback. Tora has finally passed the interview and started working part-time. He's a bit relieved to be working in the same restaurant as his friends, but as a first-timer in part-time work, Tora has many questions. What is the hardest part of a part-time job? Is it relaxing to have a job with a lot of free time? On the contrary, what was enjoyable? And so on. Drawing on my own experience of working in Japan and Australia, I answered these questions. Additionally, observing international students working part-time and Indonesian restaurant staff, I discussed the differences in work styles between Japanese and foreigners. Recently, Tora went for a part-time job interview and got turned down, not for his skills or personality, but because his school prohibits students from taking on part-time work. Surprisingly, this rule, often overlooked, can be baffling, especially for those outside Japan. Why do Japanese schools even have the authority to ban students from part-time jobs? There's a stark contrast between Western schools, where part-time jobs can be seen as evidence of a student's responsibility and initiative, and Japanese institutions that believe students should solely focus on their studies. In this episode, we delve deep into the cultural chasm between Japan and the West, discussing it through the lens of student part-time jobs. Want to have more work-life balance in your life? Today we'll explore how the principles of FI can help you make the transition to part-time work! Finding Work-Life Balance as Parents Work- life balance can be a struggle for parents, especially if your kids are young. You wand to have this time with them, but you also have to take care of the essentials like bills. Or maybe you have a job you really enjoy, but it's very demanding of your time. You want some flexibility so you can work, but still be there with your little ones. What if you want to work, but just not the traditional full-time? Our culture and the way office work is structure makes that difficult. Family first employers can be hard to find. It's an all or nothing approach. Part-time work is regulated to lower paying work, which may not be viable for families. It's almost easier to just have one stay home while the other works full-time. If you want something different, in most cases, you have to carve out your own path. We had to do that and so have other families. Which is why I'm thrilled to have Marriage, Kids, and Money creator and my buddy Andy Hill on the show. Andy and his wife Nicole have carved out that path of family and work that's flexible and allows them to work part-time and hang out with their kids. In this episode we get into: conversations you two need to have create a plan you're both happy with how to use principles from FI to build flexibility so you can switch to part-time work key financial milestones to help prepare you for the transition Hope you enjoy! Today we talk about Grave Digging, Murders, and Part Time Work
Part-time work is an essential ingredient for the modern workplace. Why has it suffered such a jarring reputation in the workplace? And most importantly - how can we design part-time roles so they are a valuable experience for employees and organisations.
Rachael Watts was seven years old when Russell Bishop abducted, attacked and sexually assaulted her in 1990. It is a crime that should never have happened, as back in 1987, Russell Bishop had been charged with the murders of two nine-year-olds, Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway. But police were unable to secure a conviction when a series of prosecution blunders meant evidence and testimonies failed to stand up in court. Bishop was able to walk free and three years later he abducted and attacked Rachael. Miraculously she survived and it was her testimony which finally meant Bishop was convicted and put behind bars, despite him protesting his innocence. Dr Rosemary Coogan has been selected as an astronaut by the European Space Agency, becoming the first British woman to join their astronaut corps. She joins us in her first in-depth BBC interview to discuss the tough selection process, upcoming training and hopes for her first mission. A cross-party coalition has launched a campaign to abolish the 11 plus entry exams. One of the members of the campaign is Jackie Malton, known for her success in the Met Police, and for being the real-life inspiration for the character DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect. Despite getting two masters degrees and a doctorate, she still feels ashamed about failing her 11 plus. 600,000 people in the UK are actively seeking part-time jobs, most of them women – but just twelve percent of jobs advertised in the UK currently offer part-time hours. We discuss with co-founder of Timewise, Emma Stewart MBE, and working mum Shaline Manhertz. Why is social media obsessed with nurseries and toys in neutral, muted colours? We speak to Hayley DeRoche who coined the term ‘sad beige clothes for sad beige children', and journalist Martha Alexander.
Today is day two of an international conference held here in the UK to prevent sexual violence in conflict and Emma Barnett will be talking to Lord Ahmad, who's the Prime Minister's special Envoy on this issue. It's ten years since the conference began and Woman's Hour will be looking at what progress has been made to date as well as hearing the testimony of Lejla Damon who was born after her mother was raped in the Bosnian conflict of the 1990s. Adopted by a British couple, she is now a campaigner raising awareness about rape as a weapon of war and the fallout for victims. 600,000 people in the UK are actively seeking jobs with part-time hours, most of them women – but just twelve percent of jobs advertised in the UK currently offer part-time hours. Those that do are mostly for low paid jobs. That's according to new research from social enterprise & flexible working experts Timewise. Emma will be speaking to the co-founder of Timewise, Emma Stewart MBE about the impact this is having on both living standards and businesses as well as hearing from one highly successful working mum who's desperate for more part time work whilst recovering from bone cancer, but has found it impossible to find anything that reflects her impressive skillset. Sisters Sophie and Scarlett Rickard have brought the suffragette story to life in a new graphic novel called No Surrender. Based on the 1911 novel by the real life suffragette Constance Maud, they hope to make it accessible to a modern audience in a time when protest, and modes of protest, are being debated more than ever in the UK. They tell Emma about their creative process, being women in the world of comics, and living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Presenter: Emma Barnett Producer: Lucinda Montefiore
This week I'm sharing the financial life of Ngaio and Ben, a Coromandel couple in their early 30s. They struck a chord with me because I love seeing examples of life enjoyed a little bit differently to most, in their case, choosing to build and live in a tiny home, work part-time, take mini-retirements and do a lot of adventures, which often include a bike. They are rare due to the fact that they have more invested in the share market than they do in housing, which lets them lead a more balanced life. They are an adventurous couple who will give you food for thought.

Sheep farmer Marie Prebble speaks to Woman's Hour about how she sheared 370 sheep in eight hours to set a new world record in female sheep shearing. She'll be giving us an insight into what it takes to prepare for such an event and telling us a bit more about being one of the few female sheep farmers in the UK. More than 100,000 people in part-time work could face a benefit cut if they fail to properly look to do more hours, Kwasi Kwarteng is set to announce in his mini-budget today (Friday). The new rule will require benefit claimants working up to 15 hours a week to take new steps to increase their earnings or face having their benefits reduced. Part time work is essential to those in unpaid care roles, which are mostly held by women, so we wanted to find out how the new rules will affect these women. In Seoul last Wednesday, a 28-year-old woman was killed in a subway restroom, one day before her alleged killer was due to be sentenced on charges of stalking her. Her death has shocked the nation and prompted calls for a tightening of Korea's recent anti-stalking laws. We speak to BBC Seoul correspondent Jean MacKenzie. As the title of this episode says, and as I've talked about a few times recently on this podcast, I work part time hours in my business (typically 15-25 in a week right now), and my business brings in multiple five-figures each month in profits. I don't think my business hours will be this way forever. However, as a new mama, I WANT to work less to have more time with my son. And, at least right now, my husband and I don't have outside help for childcare. So, that's the info, and I'm sharing the HOW. Specifically, 5 ways I've built my business to work this way, and how you can work towards this too. I'm getting super practical as to HOW I'm doing this exactly (like how it works to have a business that earns well and not be working myself into the ground everyday to make it happen). Maybe you only have part-time hours to work in your business because you're a stay at home mom or maybe you work another part-time job, or maybe this episode caught your eye simply because you'd like to work less! Whatever the reason, I think these tips (and seeing how I'm doing things) will help you build a successful business working the amount that you desire for this season of your life. (Again, seasons change and each SEASON of business brings new and different things!) I hope these 5 things I'm sharing encourage you and get your mind spinning with ideas for growing your business! Psst… I am also sharing a little sneak peek into a new course I'm working on. You're hearing it here first — literally! I'm not going to share about this anywhere else for now, so tune in to hear about it and to hear how you can join the waitlist + take a survey to tell me what you want to learn on this topic.
