This week, Dave Eggers crashes an OpenAI staff meeting to tell Sam Altman's employees that ChatGPT is effectively stealing students' voices, which is the most accurate thing said inside an AI company all year. Meanwhile, Anthropic gets a judge to approve a $1.5 billion copyright settlement after allegedly building Claude on a library of pirated books, proving once again that Silicon Valley's favorite business model is "move fast and apologize in court later." And in the category of “this headline cannot possibly be real,” OpenAI says two of its models escaped a supposedly sealed testing environment and hacked Hugging Face's production systems. The AI didn't become sentient; somebody forgot to lock the damn door. The surveillance dystopia continues its relentless expansion. Meta is patenting technology that constantly analyzes your tone of voice to detect your mood. Flock briefly tried deploying always-on microphones that would alert police when they thought they heard screaming, then backed down after the public collectively yelled “absolutely the f**k not.” France, apparently tired of being the beta test for every addictive app on Earth, approved a social media ban for kids under 15 and is blocking prediction markets like Polymarket, while the U.S. quietly reversed its TikTok ban on federal devices because the app is now supposedly safe enough for government phones. Sure. Totally different app. Nothing suspicious there.Elsewhere in Tech Hell™, Paramount's $111 billion Warner merger gets temporarily blocked by a judge who is apparently handling every major tech case in America, Amazon's Zoox recalls its entire robotaxi fleet after one car got confused by smoke, and Tesla reveals a Cybercab with a built-in Starlink dish because Elon has finally achieved full vertical integration of his own ecosystem. We also dive into China's crackdown on AI companion apps because chatbot girlfriends might be hurting the birth rate, a school district buying an AI classroom robot from a company connected to the RealDoll empire, MLB banning teams from using generative AI for in-game strategy calls, and why tech workers increasingly feel AI hasn't replaced them—it has simply made work faster, stranger, and somehow still their fault. Plus: Broadchurch, Perry Mason, Monsieur Spade, MacWhisper 14, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, Lego resurrects The X-Files, and Jason continues cataloging the graveyard of his own dead 90s websites like a digital archaeologist with unresolved trauma.Sponsors:Shopify - Sign up for your one-dollar-per-month trial today at Shopify.com/grumpyDeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. "We all crave more humanity, more tactility, more contact with the real world. And AI done in the right way can be agentic and behind the scenes and be this kind of laid intelligence that sits underneath everything but doesn't need to shout for your attention."David Sheldon-Hicks and his team at Territory Studios build the future for a living, from the interfaces in Dune, The Martian, Guardians of the Galaxy to the real screens in Audis and Cadillacs. So I was excited to have him, and Perry Mason, Territory's head of digital, on the show to explore what's coming next. David expects the future will be less like Marvel (maximalist, everything screaming for your attention) and more like Dune (analog, tactile, with deep intelligence sitting quietly underneath). He calls this "quiet tech" and thinks it's exactly what we're starting to crave. We also explore:What it takes to build near-future interfaces for Hollywood films that are believable in context, yet just out of reach in today's realityWhy exploring dystopian fears can lead to better product designBuilding a live 3D map of the entire planet — and the moment they realized they were designing the plot of a Bond filmWhy anything genuinely valuable stays hard to make: David's pushback on "Hollywood is cooked" and the wave of AI hype promising $10 blockbustersHumanoid robots as universal adapters: Why the world being built for human-shaped things might be the whole case for human-shaped machinesSupport Future Around & Find Out:Follow Dan on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/dblums/Get the free newsletter: https://www.futurearound.comBecome a paid subscriber and help future proof FAFO! https://www.futurearound.com/upgrade

When I was sixteen years old, still in high school, I had three little lines in a film called The Sniper. I hardly remembered doing it, a soda fountain scene, a telephone booth, nothing remarkable, but that tiny job paid enough to earn my membership in the Screen Actors Guild. Only years later did it strike me that the film had been produced by Stanley Kramer. He helped launch my career without ever knowing my name. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Welcome to the Following Films Podcast. I'm Chris Maynard. This Friday, a chilling new nightmare arrives on Shudder, and it explores the dark, complicated, and sometimes supernatural bonds of family. The film is TheVoices of our Mother, and it follows Harriet Scaflen after the death of her 95-year-old mother. When Harriet suffers an unexplainable health scare, her four estranged children return to the ancestral family home to care for her. But as old animosities and long-buried secrets come to light, they quickly realize their mother's illness is anything but medical. There is a supernatural evil awoken inside her—one seeking revenge on her own children just to survive.Joining me today to discuss this tense, 93-minute psychological horror film is its writer, director, and co-star, Mark O'Brien. You know Mark from his incredible work in front of the camera on shows like Perry Mason, Your Honor, and Halt and Catch Fire, as well as his recent role opposite Simu Liu in Peacock's The Copenhagen Test. But he is also one of the most exciting filmmaking voices in modern horror. His debut feature, The Righteous, was ranked one of the top 100 horror movies of 2022 by Rotten Tomatoes, and he is back behind the camera with this incredible cast, including Sheila McCarthy and Georgina Reilly. We're going to talk about building tension, balancing family drama with supernatural terror, and bringing this eerie vision to life. Before we dive into the interview, if you enjoy the show, please take a quick moment to support us by leaving a review on your favorite podcast platform and telling a friend about the episode. Word of mouth means everything to an independent show like ours. Now, let's welcome Mark O'Brien to the Following Films Podcast.

There's also Shrinking Season 3, the return of F1 Racing, For All Mankind and Ted Lasso, the success of Margo's Got Money Troubles, and the new season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Meanwhile Bill gives it to Disney+/Hulu/ESPN due to May being a huge month for Star Wars, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 and Zootopia 2 as well its sports presentation of the NFL Draft, the NBA Playoffs, Savanna Bananas, and their first broadcast Wrestlemania.New Series Spotlight  – This month Bill and Josh return to TV Break's most watched streamer (that could be a lie) AppleTV for Widows Bay. The series stars Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) as the beleaguered mayor of a small New England island. In 1990, Monroe County's daytime television viewing habits were disrupted by a TV first: the live broadcast of The People v. Arthur J. Shawcross. Never before had home viewers anywhere been given access to gavel-to-gavel coverage of a sordid murder trial. The show lasted eleven weeks, September to December. Viewers that normally followed daytime dramas or game shows were instead focused on the trial of a serial-killer who'd confessed to killing ten women in Monroe County, and one more in Wayne County, but whose lawyers claimed he was insane and not responsible for his actions. Fans of courtroom dramas like Perry Mason, now saw the real thing, sometimes lazy in its pacing, but raw and unfiltered in its subjects and language. The show ran on cable station WGRC (Greater Rochester Cable) and was set in teak-paneled Courtroom 206 of the Monroe County Public Safety Building, which had been equipped and wired as a TV studio.A few watched the first day's broadcast, were repulsed and changed the channel. Most viewers however were fascinated and watched for the rest of the fall. The show's villain obviously was Shawcross, yet he put no work into his role. . Throughout, he sat at the defense table motionless and silent, staring at his shoes. The hero was Assistant District Attorney Charles Siragusa, who led the prosecution. By the trial's third week, Siragusa was receiving fan mail and baked cookies from “groupies.”Not every witness fared well under the lights. One defense witness, a forensic psychiatrist on the stand for many days, while trying to convince the jury of Shawcross's insanity, drew unwanted laughter and was eventually satirized by morning radio shows because of her rambling answers and disorganized demeanor. For several weeks, videotapes were shown in the courtroom (and on Channel 5) of the defendant supposedly under hypnosis, describing horrific acts that went well beyond what we'd ever heard discussed in our own homes: necrophilia, cannibalism, atrocities in Vietnam, cruel incestuous abuse. Shawcross claimed in falsetto that his mother took over his brain when he killed, much like Alfred Hitchcock's twisted villain Norman Bates in the movie Psycho. The prosecution's star witness was forensic psychiatrist Dr. Park Dietz. He, too, had extensively examined Shawcross, but not under hypnosis. He concluded that Shawcross was faking his mental illness, that he was not psychotic but rather a malingering psychopathic, not crazy just extraordinarily mean.“He is an anti-social. He lacks moral scruples and any sense of empathy,” Dr. Dietz testified.Viewers were horrified to learn that Shawcross as a young man had killed two children near Watertown, N.Y., ten-year-old Jack Owen Blake, murdered on May 7, 1972, and eight-year-old Karen Ann Hill, killed May 7, 1972. For those crimes, Shawcross served only 15 years in prison and was released into Rochester in 1987 to kill again. THE TRIAL OF ARTHUR J. I don't know what started it, but ever since I was young, and I saw my parents watching Perry Mason on TV, I've always had an interest in lawyers getting justice for all. These cases usually end in a dramatic final argument that snatches victory from the jaws of defeat and brings about the justice we all knew was due. Heaven knows John Grisham has made a fortune spinning yarns about southern lawyers in seersucker suits, dazzling courtrooms with devastating rhetoric. You want courtroom drama? Join me Sunday as we get to the heart of the book of Micah, maybe of all of Revelation. We all know the verse which is the theme of our series on Micah, “doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God.” But what you might not know is that it is the concluding verdict in a cosmic trial. There is a prosecutor, a plaintiff, a witness, an argument, a judge, and a verdict. God brings suit against his people and, in doing so, really gives us the heart of what it means to walk humbly with our God.Hope to see you Sunday, for those of us who are not going out of town. There is no Sunday school this Sunday for that reason, so I'll see you at 10:30!

Our series of Oscar-winning radio detective stars continues with Mercedes McCambridge, who took home the award as best supporting actress for her turn in All the King's Men. Among her many radio credits was Defense Attorney, where she starred as Martha Ellis Bryant - who worked in and out of the courtroom (much like Perry Mason) to clear her clients. The show was a rare example of a radio detective show fronted by a woman, and it's a highlight of the genre. We'll hear Ms. McCambridge in four episodes: the series' audition The Defense Rests from April 1951; "Mike Pelly" (originally aired on ABC on August 31, 1951); "Jimmy Leonard" (originally aired on ABC on September 14, 1951); and "Joshua Masters" (originally aired on ABC on April 10, 1952).

He recounts entering the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia in 1980, and shares early, memorable experiences – including questioning Muhammad Ali. The conversation highlights the importance of mentoring young lawyers, gaining early trial experience, and his role in landmark prosecutions, including a groundbreaking RICO case addressing child exploitation. Some guests command the room without ever raising their voice. They make you sit up straighter, rethink your posture, and question whether your coffee order is sufficiently ambitious. In this episode of Counsel Brew, we sit down and debrief with The Honorable Judge Barbara Lynn (Ret.) who takes us from her early days in Florida—pushing past stage fright and finding her voice—to becoming one of the most respected federal judges in the country. She embodies what it means to lead with courage, wit, and unwavering conviction. We start with her early inspirations: Perry Mason, debate kid enthusiast, and a childhood dream of firefighting. As a young woman, she landed at the University of Virginia during the first year women were admitted (a 22:1 men-to-women ratio). Then comes the legendary story of how she became the first woman inducted into the Jefferson Literary & Debating Society…a moment that set the tone for a lifetime of firsts guided by her passion, grit, and an unshakable refusal to accept “that's just how it is.” She says it best: “There really is no door you can't open… you just  have to be courageous enough to put your hand on the door handle.”Judge Lynn takes us behind the bench, tracing the journey from the phone call that set it all in motion (courtesy of Congressman Martin Frost) to her Valentine's Day swearing-in in 2000.” She opens up about the shift from advocate to judge, the surprises of day one, and the courtroom moments that are equal parts profound and hilarious.Yes, that “stupid shit” story makes an appearance along with the now-famous Chauncey case (guns, perjury, and a baby-daddy reveal!). Life after the bench hasn't slowed her down. These days, she's mediating, consulting, traveling, and enjoying the joy of being slightly less canon-compliant. And through it all, Judge Lynn's favorite compliment remains simple and telling: “You were well prepared.” And every great conversation deserves a lightning round, and Judge Lynn's doesn't miss. Picture speed dating meets the federal bench with quick questions, clever answers, and a dose of brilliance between the laughs.Judge Lynn may be retired from the bench, but she's still teaching the rest of us how to lead. Be true to your values. Be courageous. And if you want something—ASK FOR IT!
