Have you ever wondered how we figured out the most basic principles of our world? Prepare for a mind-bending journey through humanity's scientific awakening as we explore the bizarre, often accidental path of discovery that brought us from magical thinking to modern science. In this captivating discussion, we unravel how early scientists believed burning objects released a mysterious substance with negative mass called "phlogiston," and how doctors once diagnosed diabetes by tasting patients' urine. We laugh about the accidental discoveries that changed history—like the artificial sweeteners found when scientists forgot to wash their hands before eating lunch or smoking cigarettes. The conversation takes fascinating turns through Jan-Baptiste Van Helmont's famous willow tree experiment, the evolution of medicine from willow bark to aspirin, and how public education transformed our collective understanding of the natural world. Throughout, we reflect on how much of scientific progress came through persistence, experimentation, and sometimes sheer luck rather than the orderly process many imagine. As we pivot to examine artificial intelligence's potential to revolutionize discovery, we confront challenging questions about who benefits from technological advancement. Will AI solve humanity's biggest problems or simply widen existing inequalities? The tension between capitalism and scientific progress emerges as we consider whether innovation can truly flourish when profit is the primary motivator.Whether you're fascinated by the history of science, curious about chemistry's strangest stories, or concerned about our technological future, this episode will transform how you think about human knowledge. In this episode, JF and Phil are joined by Jacob G. Foster—sociologist, physicist, and researcher at Indiana University Bloomington and the Santa Fe Institute—for a conversation about their recent collaboration in Daedalus, the journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Their co-authored essay, “Care of the Dead,” explores how the dead continue to shape our cultures, languages, and ways of being. Together, they discuss the process of writing the piece and what it means to say that the dead are not gone—that they persist, and that they make claims on the living. Ad astra Travelers and welcome to Tales of Teyvat: A Genshin Lore Podcast. This week we'll be discussing Natlan so far! Before Travelers dive into this episode, please note that we are not talking about anything in the 5.1 update that launched on October 8th. Our hosts start by discussing their initial reactions to entering Natlan, how they came to Natlan, and some of their favorite parts of Natlan so far... Afterwards, they walk through the 5.0 archon quest, making sure to properly explain the new terms introduced in this nation like Phlogiston, the Wayob, and the Night Kingdom. Was Ajaw turned into a pixel because of timey whimey BS? Is Tupac not dead and just in the Night Kingdom? Where is the war mongering? Make sure to grab your saurian and tune in for this jam packed episode! We hope this episode can be a refresher for those getting ready to dive into the next section of the archon quest and also a tool for understanding a lot of new terminology and ideas that Travelers haven't really seen before. We humans have always been fond of invisible things.Poltergeists, fairies, unicorns, the Yeti, the Lost City of Atlantis.Just because you can't see them, it doesn't mean they aren't there.Scientists, no less than any other humans, suffer from this fondness for invisible things.Phlogiston, miasma, ether, strings.Just because you can't see them, scientists have insisted, it doesn't mean they aren't there.Beware these invisible things. As I explore Wolfram Physics, I'm aware of certain invisible things that we believe in now, but we're going to have to let go, if Stephen Wolfram is right. And I'm also aware of the temptation to replace this old set of invisible things with a new set of invisible things. Here's why we'd do well to resist.I release The Last Theory as a video too! Here we see the advent of the steam engine, using the knowledge of Boyle's Law, invented by Thomas Savery. We encounter Johann Joachim Becher, with his three elemental earths, including a fatty earth that burned. Then we learn of Georg Ernst Stahl, and his popular idea of phlogiston as the burning quality--but it explained corrosion and rust, too! There is the new calibrated tool, the thermometer, which led to Joseph Black's research on gas sylvester. We discover that at this time, alchemy and chemistry finally diverge, never to meet again. Finally, we hear about the effect of the current natural science even on poetry and music, as performed by Dov Rosenschein.Support the show

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Making Beliefs Pay Rent (in Anticipated Experiences), published by Eliezer Yudkowsky on LessWrong. Thus begins the ancient parable: If a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? One says, “Yes it does, for it makes vibrations in the air.” Another says, “No it does not, for there is no auditory processing in any brain.” If there's a foundational skill in the martial art of rationality, a mental stance on which all other technique rests, it might be this one: the ability to spot, inside your own head, psychological signs that you have a mental map of something, and signs that you don't. Suppose that, after a tree falls, the two arguers walk into the forest together. Will one expect to see the tree fallen to the right, and the other expect to see the tree fallen to the left? Suppose that before the tree falls, the two leave a sound recorder next to the tree. Would one, playing back the recorder, expect to hear something different from the other? Suppose they attach an electroencephalograph to any brain in the world; would one expect to see a different trace than the other? Though the two argue, one saying “No,” and the other saying “Yes,” they do not anticipate any different experiences. The two think they have different models of the world, but they have no difference with respect to what they expect will happen to them; their maps of the world do not diverge in any sensory detail. It's tempting to try to eliminate this mistake class by insisting that the only legitimate kind of belief is an anticipation of sensory experience. But the world does, in fact, contain much that is not sensed directly. We don't see the atoms underlying the brick, but the atoms are in fact there. There is a floor beneath your feet, but you don't experience the floor directly; you see the light reflected from the floor, or rather, you see what your retina and visual cortex have processed of that light. To infer the floor from seeing the floor is to step back into the unseen causes of experience. It may seem like a very short and direct step, but it is still a step. You stand on top of a tall building, next to a grandfather clock with an hour, minute, and ticking second hand. In your hand is a bowling ball, and you drop it off the roof. On which tick of the clock will you hear the crash of the bowling ball hitting the ground? To answer precisely, you must use beliefs like Earth's gravity is 9.8 meters per second per second, and This building is around 120 meters tall. These beliefs are not wordless anticipations of a sensory experience; they are verbal-ish, propositional. It probably does not exaggerate much to describe these two beliefs as sentences made out of words. But these two beliefs have an inferential consequence that is a direct sensory anticipation—if the clock's second hand is on the 12 numeral when you drop the ball, you anticipate seeing it on the 1 numeral when you hear the crash five seconds later. To anticipate sensory experiences as precisely as possible, we must process beliefs that are not anticipations of sensory experience. It is a great strength of Homo sapiens that we can, better than any other species in the world, learn to model the unseen. It is also one of our great weak points. Humans often believe in things that are not only unseen but unreal. The same brain that builds a network of inferred causes behind sensory experience can also build a network of causes that is not connected to sensory experience, or poorly connected. Alchemists believed that phlogiston caused fire—we could simplistically model their minds by drawing a little node labeled “Phlogiston,” and an arrow from this node to their sensory experience of a crackling campfire—but this belief yielded no advance predictions; the link from phlogiston to experience was always configur...

The procedurally-generated treasure hunt for video game music on vinyl record continues, and we've brought in a couple of strong-jawed Indiana Jones style action archaeologists to get it done. This week, Caleb Denney of Channel 3 Records joins us alongside game music guitar savant and audio mixing sorcerer-king Stemage to get it done. We begin our endeavor by uncovering the hidden gem Bat out of HAL, by Kirby's Dream Band. We praise the band's knack for letting all the musical elements come out and sparkle, as well as the interesting set of choices for inclusion on the album. We then continue to the quizzical and well-known music of Spelunky, by Phlogiston. This release is unique in a few ways, and so we turn it around in our minds and ears to explore its peculiar beauty, and the interesting way it's been arranged to take us through the shifting corridors and caves of its musical labyrinths. We continue by illuminating the releases and products that seek your treasures these days... and there are many, bold vinyl adventurer! We then head back to the university to ruminate on our findings by discussing the art and science of audio mixing. Grant and Caleb describe what the process actually is and how it relates to the production of a digital or physical version of our favorite tunes, and how that translates into the finished vinyl that sits on your home treasure altar turntable. Clearly the hosts secretly wanted to have a movie podcast, or perhaps just a podcast devoted to the movie Aliens. In this episode I finally take a look at the Starpath game Party Mix, which may be one of the first collections of mini games in a video game. It is a rare 4 player paddle game at the late date of Fall 1983, but it has its usual Starpath polish. I hope you enjoy listening. Next up will be Bank Heist by 20th Century Fox, and hopefully it will be released in two weeks. If you have feedback for Bank Heist, please send it to 2600gamebygame@gmail.com by end of day September 5th. Thank you so much for your patience, and for listening. Phlogiston is an LA hard rock band formed with the intent to reimagine the alternative rock aesthetic. The three piece met in college and have since played numerous shows around the bay area where they formed but have recently made SoCal their home. Upon relocating they have played a handful of SoCal venues, most notably the legendary Whisky a Go Go, and the Viper Room. They have produced one full length album. With influences such as Nirvana, Tool, and Alice in Chains, Phlogiston blends elements of heavy guitar riffs, complex drumming, and progressive bass arrangements.

The corporate media bias and collusion with the DNC as revealed by wikileaks is serious. If you can stomach 4 days of a North Korea style propaganda show as the DNC convention, you can endure me breaking it apart in 30 minutes. I'll cover ground quick and you might need to listen twice. Awake progressive should not vote for Hillary Clinton. Do not buy into the fear Trump dynamic. Use this audio file with anyone who tries to shame a Bernie or Bust voter into approving this outrageous and anti-democratic Obama/Clinton farce. Real democracy requires first truth. We may not have troops marching into the newspaper and shutting it down or rounding people up as in Turkey, but the net affect is similar. The drone program and Obama's decision to pass his legacy over to Trump are linked -- yes, Clinton and Obama do not fear Trump and neither should you. They chose to pass the government over to Trump. Let him have it then.

HRC has about 12 million votes so far. Bernie, including the unreported popular caucus totals has a bit more than 10, closer to 11. We have about a fourth of the voters to go in the primary process. Obama won in 2012 with about 66 million in the popular vote. Trump is perhaps the most popular primary candidate among Republicans ever, with about 10 million votes so far. Obama won 2012 by 5 million, 2008 by 10, Bush 2004 by 3, and Gore 2000 by .6. The links at the end of this piece show current primary totals, historical general results and a statistical estimate of what the caucus results would mean if the popular votes were reported. Points: ONE Before we're done, Bernie will have gotten more than 14 million people to vote for him, in all likelihood, more than twice the number needed to win an election this century and more than needed to win any election this century (I mean more than the margin or difference in every election). We are an important demographic already, not considering the millions more who were motivated to vote could not vote because of closed primary rules who are every bit feeling the Bern... maybe another 4 or 5 million already down. So, the current Bernie constituency represents about 18 million active voters or more than 25% of what you need to win. I know there is a lot more potential support out there, I mean who already know Bernie now and are supporters now. TWO You can't predict a general election based on a primary. You may need at least 5 times as many votes as you get in the general as you get in the primary. Even if you add all the votes in your party's primary for yourself and your opposition, you will need to way more than double the total. The procedure for adding these two columns of voters is called unifying the party and is a prerequisite for victory. To say your candidate is electable because he/she won a primary is obviously nonsense (as if looking at the candidates ahead in the process were not sufficient to confirm that bad general election candidates can win primaries). Poltifact says that 25% of us won't support HRC in the general, or more than 4 million people. Then the article below compares 2008 to 2016 and concludes that in the end we will all move over to vote for HRC and she is right that she doesn't need to worry about us very much. But, did her supporters have a Facebook page like this in 2008 to support our organized resistance? CONCLUSION We are a huge constituency, well organized, with clear leadership, a massive fundraising capacity, and very clear policy goals. In fact, we are the only constituency with these characteristics. And that is how we are NOW. By November, with the nomination, there is no telling where we'd be. http://www.politifact.com/…/hillary-clinton-history-shows-…/ https://en.wikipedia.org/…/List_of_United_States_presidenti… http://www.realclearpolitics.com/…/democratic_vote_count.ht… https://www.reddit.com/…/sanders_and_clintons_popular_vote…/

Degenerative Grammar; by Desirée-Debauchée Cyntacks & Dec A. D’Cadence; From Volume CLXXII, Number 2, of Speculative Grammarian, February 2015 — Since the 1950’s, linguistics has been wild with excitement over Chomsky’s insights, collectively known as “generative grammar.” As all non-linguists know, however, grammar as speakers encounter it in daily life is actually degenerative. As one prominent analyst (Ellen DeGeneres) has put it, “Entropy rules.” (Read by Phineas Q. Phlogiston.)

I canvassed the South Bronx with my daughter Lotta. In two days there will be an election. If we had a few hundred more people in the Bronx knocking on doors, we could turn the neighborhood for Bernie, and then the state, and therefore the presidency. Unfortunately, there were not enough people canvassing. This is pretty raw (edited but raw) that I uploaded the night after I got back. As I upload this, we could still win the state but it will take a monumental effort. https://imgur.com/a/L5kDD
Today in Kingston, NY, the sound of the election as it goes.
Debate last night. Old stories. Dreams. This morning.
Getting hung up on and other stuff. And good conversations.
Here are some highlights of today's phone banking. Get on the phone. Knock on doors. Be a citizen. Thank you. Feel the Bern.
Video of the debate here if you can stand it. https://youtu.be/ccJZIz5Hq9o Trump. Think about that. The greater evil. I’m the lesser. Evil, yes, but less so He’s low down But I’m less low He’s a straight up clown He’s the devil you less know I’m a devil too At least I got breasts yo His shirt is brown But I was his wedding guest though When he golfs with Bill No Mexican caddy if Donald says no Ivanka and Chelsea Just kissing for the press you know Vote for me? Yeah, I guess so Cause there is no arrest yet though And by my estimation I don’t expect so I did cash that check though Kickback or a bribe Who the heck knows? The guys with his rallies From Modesto to Frenso I’ll be impressed when the press says to Suck up corporate media So here, have a straw Lies dense as a forest So here, have a saw Hit the mud, put the boot in Make money for self Like Vladamir Putin I’m evolving Problem solving It’s my calling The millions I got Richard Nixon did not Kissing ass at Goldman sachs and Transcribing every Word I’m bribing Trump’s a racist And his tacky place is Where I hang out With his ho bride And I watch Bill flirt It can’t hurt my pride If I have no pride to hurt
You’re deluded. She’ll frack your water and leave it polluted. Gullible. You define it. Any old contract, I’m sure you’d sign it. Invaded Iraq. You forgave her as if she could take her vote back. Blew up Libya. Africa imploded before you voted not that you noted. Killed Saddam: She apologized, then killed Gaddafi. Voted for DOMA: Said sorry invited a gay couple for coffee. Evolving, grinding gears, She’ll apologize for the next war in just a few years. Set an alert or a timer, any app, there’s plenty She’ll regret the Iran war about 2020 She evolves to a rhythm that can be quite hypnotic. Fast likes bacteria Resist antibiotic Iraq in chaos, Libya more chaotic She said she’s sorry, the media forgot it Or forgave it, her way they will pave it And you’re a sucker cause you believe it The New York Times, you actually read it You to suck up corporate media So here, have a straw Or cut your cable chord, here have a saw But serve your email at home, that’s no problem at all But drop knowledge like Snowden, then here comes the law Hypocrisy, yeah, that’s the least of the dirt. Making millions from banks doing no work. Speaking for fees Is not a job, or a hobby. Skimming off the top like Robert Mugabe. Deep in dirty dough, Deeper than you can sink a boot in. Making money for self like Vladimir Putin. The Clinton pile, Third world style Wannabe tyrants and plenty petty It’s a pity For money she’s so damn shitty Explain the 150 million she got Crossing ethical lines Richard Nixon would not As an official or a candidate cannot be paid to speak So for the few months in between she made a half million a week I’m not saying she takes bribes Cause the might be be kickbacks So let that Sink in More ethically challenged than Richard Nixon She made terrible speeches And had them transcribed In case there was any doubt that the gig was a bribe The story leaked, she freaked And as much as the transcripts could in fact damage her The way she changed her story shows she’s a rank amateur But Trump, she will say every day, is the greater evil So we should prefer the lesser The lesser is still evil, And you like that bumper sticker? My candidate is sick, but other one is sicker I’m lesser evil, but I saw the greater wed I’m the lesser evil, but the greater is my friend I’m the lesser evil, playing golf with the greater Most of you seem to hate me, but he’s the greater hater He’s the mad monster I used to have for dinner Hanging out with him, I never noticed he was a sinner When we were hanging out, he never talked about a wall No, he was the most perfect gentleman that I ever saw But now, of course, he’s like Hitler Who I used to have to dinner. I used to dine with Hitler But now I have evolved. He says he bought me With political donations And that conversation was not transcribed So I was never bribed Not once, I’m just saying I was paid 150 million But never notice who was paying Was not influenced in the least My friend Trump is a racist beast He’s such a racist I had to smile up in his face And say I loved his tacky place And his mail order bride Holding hands with Bill that flirt And that didn’t hurt my pride Cause I have no pride to hurt My campaign is not built on dreams My campaign is not about visions for the future or lofty rhetoric My campaign is not a promise to reform Washington My campaign does not offer the populace a clear logical reasons for voting for me My campaign simply leverages the power of dynasty and name recognition with the acquiescence of the corporate media and the support of the DNC (Determined to Nominate Clinton or maybe Damn Near Comatose) to simply push this shabby leaky vehicle for my ego over the finish line through sheer force. And as for my concluding statement, let me just say, Queen Elizabeth did not have to make a closing statement before accepting the crown from Henry the 8th and therefore neither do I.

Thony Christie, historian of science and proprietor of the Renaissance Mathematicus and Whewell's Ghost stops by to talk about Galileo, Newton, the Copernican controversy, and why it was smart to believe that the Earth didn't move. The story of how we came to understand that the Earth was not the center of the Universe is one of the most fascinating stories in the whole of the history of science. The debate over Copernicus' heliocentric model lasted for centuries, and was carried out by mathematicians, theologians, philosophers and scientists. Observational evidence initially favored a geocentric model, and definitive proof did not appear until long after the first precise data (captured by Tycho Brahe and compiled by Kepler) had persuaded most scientists of their truth. Independent scholar Thony Christie takes us through the debate on this episode of Startup Geometry. [0.0.16] How did you get into the study of the History of Science?
