Pat and Kevin have known and worked with each other ever since Kevin founded the Pilates Method Alliance in 2000. And both of my guests have gone on to teach and mentor Pilates teachers around the globe leaving lasting impressions on all of their students. This interview may be somewhat provocative because we'll be touching on the unrest surrounding the PMA, little known tidbits about the First generation teachers, and the current state of our Pilates community.About Darien Gold ~  https://www.dariengold.com Music credits ~ Instagram: @theotherjohnmayer Email: mayerranchrecordings@gmail.comBecome a show supporter! https://www.buzzsprout.com/332675/supporters/newAbout Pat Guyton ~ Pat is the founder and owner of Pilates Conservatory®, which offers mentorship programs, continuing education and a comprehensive teacher training program.  For more information - https://patguytonpilates.comAbout Kevin Bowen ~ Kevin is the owner and Director of Core Dynamics Pilates, a comprehensive Pilates Teacher Training Program based upon the Eve Gentry lineage.  Featured on various news programming and publications such as CNN, ABC, WSJ, L A Times and Miami Herald, Kevin continues advocating for the Pilates profession. Conni Ponturo knows that the answer to pain-free living is within us.She says, “When we truly investigate the connection between our thoughts, beliefs, and lifestyle patterns, we find that we can gain deeper insights into optimizing our freedom to move and live pain-free.” Here are the takeaways... Your words have power. Be aware of what you are saying. You may not be able to change the world but you can choose how you feel in your body. You always have a choice in what you are going to pay attention to. We often move way too fast. Slow down. Be present. Then you can do whatever you need to do. Shifting stories is really healing. Asking yourself what story seems exciting to you can feel good... and then ask yourself what would someone who has the story you WANT do? Think about who you WANT to be instead of thinking about being dissatisfied with who you are. You don't have to go somewhere else to work your body. Be right here and move your body. The small steps you take every day consistently that make a big difference in your life are much simpler and easier than we think. It's also more sustainable. Do what you can right now. Walk around for at least 5 minutes every hour. Drink a large glass of water each hour so you if nothing else, you'll have to get up to go to the bathroom. You can't change anything you hate. You don't care of things you hate in the same way as things you love. Learn to love all of you. Love the vehicle you are in. Pain - whether emotional or physical - is telling you something. Ask yourself and your body "What do you need from me?" or "What would it take to feel better?" Joy comes in small moments. It can happen EVEN in very hard times. Ask yourself what you can do in the time you have - even if it's 5 minutes. The Pilates Method Alliance had its beginnings in 2001.  Kevin Bowen and Colleen Glenn, both Pilates teachers, shared a mutual interest in preserving Joe's Method. So they invited Pilates teachers, including the First Generation - Ron Fletcher, Mary Bowen, Kathy Grant, Lolita San Miguel and even Romana Kryzanowska, though she didn't attend. Also, equipment company owners, Ken Endelman and Moria Stott. They all met in Miami, Florida to form an organization and they set out to create a curriculum that would be the industry's standard for certifying potential Pilates teachers. The PMA has had its ups and downs but has managed to survive for these last two decades. Enter Carla Harris. Hired in 2021 to step into the executive director role, Carla is determined to take the PMA in another direction that is more reflective of today's Pilates community. For more information about the Pilates Method Alliance: https://pilatesmethodalliance.orgFor more information about Darien Gold: https://www.dariengold.comTheme music - Soul Blues Piano Shuffle by Boom Zoom

Erin is committed to encouraging, educating, inspiring, and equipping her clients to live the life they never thought possible.     In this interview we discuss: -How Erin came to accept Jesus as her Savior and the impact this had on her life. -Personally experiencing the power of pilates as she was sent to rehabilitate. -Experiencing 9/11 as a New Yorker in the midst of her struggle. -Anxiety attacks, the impact of repressed emotions, and the importance of addressing these. -Frustration of being a chronic pain patient who was misunderstood and not getting the care and validation that was so needed. -Diagnosis of extreme mold toxicity after a decade of illness and beginning the detox process. -A life changing encounter and revelation with Jesus during a powerful time of prayer (so good). -How God directed her to her true calling. -Traveling the globe to speak and empower people with scoliosis and the surprisingly common denominator she discovered across cultures. -Her prayer and willing heart to be a vessel that God can use to heal others.   A few highlights from Erin that I love: "The Lord is real.  He is not just dead words in a book.  He is ALIVE and He is HERE.  You can speak to Him."  "Since my revelation with Jesus, the love that flows over me is almost uncontainable some days.  I am hopefully optimistic and expectant of the things that await my life, and what the Lord will do to me, and with me, and through me."   Thank you, Erin, for all you have done for the scoliosis community, and for helping me to find a way to cope with scoliosis.  You give me hope and you have equipped me in ways that I can live my life more fully and independently!  I am so grateful!  God is using you in BIG ways!   Erin's studio is located in Nashville, TN.  She is trained in Pilates at the Kane School of Core Integration. Katie has been a teacher and student of Pilates for 10 years and is comprehensively certified through the Pilates Method Alliance. As a teacher of Pilates, Katie seeks to help her clients garner strength, flexibility, and coordination through the delivery of progressive, balanced, and challenging workouts. Throughout class, Katie consistently provides descriptive and motivating cues that aim to simultaneously achieve correct form, incorporate breath, enhance the mind-body connection, foster confidence, and of course, develop core strength. Katie is passionate about educating all peoples on the incredible benefits of Pilates, and her goal as an instructor is to help her clients learn to move intelligently, both in the Pilates studio and in their everyday lives, to promote positive mental and physical health over the lifespan. As aptly stated by Joseph Pilates himself, “Not only is health a normal condition, but it is our duty to not only to attain it but to maintain it.” As a student of Pilates, Katie was first formally introduced to it as a means to recover from years of being a ballet dancer and track & field athlete. The non-impact, core-focused exercise helped her quickly develop better muscular balance and flexibility, which reduced the chronic pain felt in her knees and hips. The clarity of mind she also experienced from practicing Pilates inspired her to pursue her comprehensive certification amidst attaining her Master’s Degree in Psychology. Katie continued to teach Pilates throughout her graduate education, in which she earned a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Purdue University, as it served as a wonderful balance to the rigor of academics. Katie moved to Boston with her husband in 2015 to pursue academic careers, teaching and conducting research at Clark University and Harvard University. Katie continues to share her passion for Pilates and is grateful to her mentors and students for their unconditional support. https://www.clubpilates.com

This is: At Home With Our Homies. At Home With Our Homies is an Interview Podcast that started right as COVID-19 Began. Hosted by Jayson Siano, CEO & Founder of Sabre Real Estate, who utilized this extra time home to interview his friends who happen to be the top producers in the Retail, Fitness, Health, Real Estate and Business industry. Listen along for entertaining interviews full of deep perspective on the current state of things along with quirky rapid fire questions and more! Aired on 3/30/20, Our own Jay Siano interviews Andrea Rogers, the creator and owner of Xtend Barre®, a full-body workout that combines elements of pilates and dance to create a dynamic and sage workout for people of all levels of fitness. Ever since she was a child, Andrea Rogers has loved movement. So much so that she took up ballet at the age of three, and by 16, she'd already choreographed her first dance. In the years that followed, she became a professional dancer and traveled the world with celebrity performers, esteemed dance companies, and most notably, with Walt Disney World Co. as a principle dancer. After a few years, Andrea went back to school to get her degree. Fueled by her passion for movement and teaching, she set her sights on a career in the fitness industry. She fell in love with Pilates for its therapeutic benefits and became a certified classical Pilates instructor. Still, Andrea never forgot her first love: dance. In an effort to add more variety, fun, and fitness benefits to her classes, she began to sprinkle elements of her dance training into her Pilates routines. The result was an innovative fusion of core ballet barre technique and Pilates fundamentals. Her clients loved it, got great results, and kept coming back for more. She knew she was onto something. Andrea officially launched Xtend Barre in 2008. Combining Pilates, muscle-sculpting barre moves, and high-energy cardio, Xtend Barre now has over 40 studio locations worldwide and even more classes. In addition to Andrea's popular barre workouts, Xtend Barre now offers a wide variety of classes including HIIT, TRX, Pilates, dance, postnatal, and other supplemental programs that have helped her become a total fitness phenomenon. In 2019, Andrea helped launch Xtend Barre for Openfit, a 30-minute version of her signature Xtend Barre studio class. Now, you can do Xtend Barre online — on your schedule — and sculpt your body with Andrea's exhilarating, cardio-driven take on the traditional barre workout. In addition to being a Master Trainer for Xtend Barre, Andrea holds various credentials including: Pilates Method Alliance member, Classical Pilates Instructor, America Council on Exercise Certified Group Fitness Instructor, and IFA member. Andrea has been featured in countless publications including: Vogue, Fitness, Self, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, InStyle, OK!, and more. Her past clients have included numerous A-list celebrities in the fashion and entertainment industries. Currently, she resides in New York, NY.

Fuse is a proud affiliate of Julian Littleford Pilates and was voted the Best Pilates studio in Washington, D.C. by Washingtonian Magazine.  In addition to her passion for creating fun and effective workouts for her group classes, Mariska is passionate about educating teachers and patients about exercise for neurological conditions. Her Pilates for MS™ Teacher Training incorporates the latest research into neuroplasticity and neurorehabilitation into a Pilates program design for multiple sclerosis, stroke, and other neurological conditions. It is core curriculum for Carolyne Anthony’s Center for Women’s Fitness’ Women’s Health Pilates Certificate. Mariska is a PMA@ Certified Pilates Teacher who completed her comprehensive training through BASI Pilates. She has additional training through Power Pilates, Peak Pilates, Balance Body, and PureBarre, as well as several specialty certifications. She also studies regularly with friend and “spirit guide,” Jennifer Kries.  A frequent guest writer for fitness and lifestyle blogs, Mariska is currently writing a book on exercise for neurological conditions, developing additional training manuals for the Fuse method, teaching internationally, running a studio, and spending rare time off with her husband and their dog-child – a Basenji named Zoe. About Meghann Koppele Duffy   Meghann Koppele is a Kane School, Pilates Method Alliance, and iM=X certified instructor as well as a Certified Strength and Condition Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She has also completed the Functional Anatomy for Movement & Injuries Workshop at Mt. Sinai Medical Center. Meghann received her undergraduate degree in exercise science from the University of Scranton and a Master's degree in Applied Physiology from Columbia University. After completing her Master's degree, Meghann opened a Pilates studio in Hoboken, New Jersey, where she worked with clients with a variety of conditions including severe back pain, sports injuries, pre- and postnatal, and multiple sclerosis. She also worked with clients who simply wanted better fitness or to achieve their weight loss goals. After five years running a studio, Meghann decided to sell her business to refocus on her first love of teaching and helping others. Over the past twelve years, Meghann has had the privilege of working closely with many clients with multiple sclerosis (from early stage to advanced), as well as their doctors. After compiling medical research and anecdotal evidence, she created her own Pilates-based protocol to help her MS clients. Realizing that teachers were ill-equipped to work with this population, she joined forces with Kelly Kane and Matt McCulloch via the Kinected Mentor Program to help her further develop her work into a workshop for other teachers, personal trainers, physical therapists, and other rehab specialists.    In 2014, Meghann and Mariska Breland decided to combine forces to help educate other movement professionals about Pilates for Multiple Sclerosis. They realized that their programs were entirely complementary (down to the way each teacher believes a session should begin). Meghann then joined the Pilates for Neurological Conditions team and teaches a 3-day Pilates for Neurological Conditions course based off Mariska's book Pilates for MS and Neurological Conditions in addition to teaching her own Advanced Neuro workshop based on the Koppele Method. Since 2014 Meghann has taught her method nationwide and across the world in Australia.  She is also currently working with top hospitals to incorporate her method into the standard treatment plans.   In 2017 Mariska and Meghann joined forces yet again to create the first online movement education tool for people with Neurological Conditions.  They were both sick of Pilates being so cost prohibitive and decided to create the Neuro Rehab Movement to help bring their successful methods to everyone at a fraction of the cost.  The Neuro Rehab Movement will be live in March 2018, sign up  for our newsletter to stay up  to date.   Meghann is also the Resident Coordinator and Teacher Trainer at the acclaimed Kane School teacher training program at Kinected in NYC.  For more information about getting certified through the Kane School or continuing education at Kinected please email education@kinectedcenter.com or visit Kinected's website.

Momma Strong’s purpose is to redefine the scope of prenatal and postpartum health through specialized intelligent fitness. That is the root of all of your movement especially as a woman. Our brain and body our ever connected and when we are struggling injury or pain postpartum than can affect our mood. Listen to the pain and be your own detective about your body. Momma Strong is committed to the business of enoughism, which is the belief that you don’t need fixing, but that you deserve integration. You don’t have time for anything extra and Momma Strong gets motherhood and gets that. Become stronger more effectively and efficiently with Momma Strong.  So You Know She Is Legit... Courtney’s exposure to biomechanics and rehabilitative exercise started in her early childhood, as an elite level gymnast, kayaker, and ballet dancer. At age 16, she left home to pursue her professional career with The Houston Ballet, where she remained for 5 years until a severe ankle injury forced her to retire.  After retirement, she transitioned immediately into a two-year course of study in rehabilitative exercise and Pilates, under the supervision of nationally renowned Pilates instructors Bryan Peters and James Harren, who had trained with the original colleague of Joseph Pilates himself. She then earned her certification through the Pilates Method Alliance and became a top-rated trainer for the following 6 years.  Following the birth of her first child, however, she began to suffer from injuries related to pregnancy and childbirth, none of which her prior core training was able to resolve. This realization led her to study with Thomas Myers, Yamuna Zake, Esther Gokhale, and Stuart McGill, all prominent leaders in the field of spine health and pelvic stabilization.  From there, Courtney became certified as a personal trainer through National Academy of Sports Medicine and soon after was granted their advanced certification as a Corrective Exercise Specialist. She also carries a Prenatal and Postpartum specialization from NASM and multiple certifications in pelvic rehabilitation, injury prevention, and activated release therapy. Her unique method as taught in MommaStrong is the product of this comprehensive background, helping mothers all over the world finely tone their body’s through clinically approved, and feasible workouts that instigate an adventurous life through strength that matters. In this episode, Nikki chats with Kyria Sabin Waugaman, director of Fletcher Pilates International. They briefly discuss the history of Fletcher Pilates, Ron Fletcher’s philosophy of movement and how the Fletcher towel work can be used in post rehab and performance settings. Who was Ron Fletcher? Ron Fletcher studied directly under Joe and Clara Pilates and is responsible for introducing and popularizing the Pilates Method in the West Coast. Ron is known for having evolved the Pilates Method while maintaining the intention of the work. With Clara Pilates permission, he brought the work to standing and added elements of barre to enhance the function of the exercises. He also developed the Fletcher Towelwork® to improve integrity strength and balance in the upper body. Using the Towelwork® to improve performance The Towelwork® progresses movement from basic to complicated patterns. It starts with stabilization exercises to teach clients how to move from their backs and from a place of symmetry. Depending on the activity, the application of the Towelwork® will vary, but it gives everyone a sense of strength, flexibility, ease of movement and taking the Pilates principles all the way up through the body. For many people who play a one sided sport like tennis or baseball, there’s an instability or imbalance in the body that can be corrected with the Towelwork®. Additionally, it can teach dancers how to perform upper body movement from a place of strength and ease. Fletcher Towelwork® for breast cancer One of the applications of the work is opening the front of the body. In the case of chest wall surgeries like mastectomies, lumpectomies and open heart surgery, there’s a tendency to close down in the chest particularly when there is scar tissue or pain involved. This causes changes in upper body posture and compromises the stability of the shoulder girdle. The Towelwork® helps expand the chest wall, improve shoulder stability and correct upper body posture. Fletcher Pilates teaching philosophy Ron approached every body from an idea of movement potential – not limitations. He was all about helping people embody their bodies and he often talked about how we have this give or take, 70 trillion cells that we get to move through life with. He believed that we should treat each person, no matter where they are in their lives as a whole being, not just as someone who is recovering from something. A graduate of Duke University and a licensed massage therapist, she initiated her studies with Ron Fletcher in 1991 and founded Body Works Pilates studios in Tucson, Arizona in 1993. Recognized by Ron Fletcher as a Master Teacher and Disseminator, Kyria developed the Pilates Program at the University of Arizona where she serves as Adjunct Faculty.
