Tesla Q1 2024 earnings are hot off the press! Tesla crushes it with a surprise $1B+ GAAP profit, strong guidance and and absolutely legendary conference call. Tesla is going all in on FSD with the new V12 rewrite, and its Robotaxi event on 8/8, where it looks like the 'Cybercab' will be unveiled. Elon Musk shocked Tesla fans and shareholders on the earnings call when he said the new cheaper vehicle would be ready for production as soon as late 2024 or early 2025. What are your thoughts on the quarter!? I was so stoked I bought $2,000 worth of Tesla stock today!! Also a little bit of a sad call at the end with head of IR Martin Viecha leaving the company.
Tesla is set to reduce its workforce significantly in both Texas and California, impacting over 6,000 employees as the company navigates through a challenging phase of slowing demand and decreased profit margins. This announcement precedes the electric vehicle manufacturer's quarterly financial results, during which CEO Elon Musk is expected to present a strategic plan for the company.
Gerber Kawasaki Inc CEO Ross Gerber speaks on Tesla's earnings and his prediction on the company's growth strategy, or lack thereof with Bloomberg's Carol Massar and Tim StenovecSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lot's learned from Tesla's earnings call, Elon Musk will appear on Saturday Night Live, is that a mistake? Our professional comedy opinion on that. Is film and TV dead? Oscars disappoint. Australian EV policy would be the worst in the world, even surpassing Saskatchewan, Canada! We have a satirical clip that destroys that policy. New concept we've come up with: The countries with the worse EV policies will become dumping grounds for the last manufactured combustion vehicles. Tesla has a pilot plant for 4680 cell production. Cells not reliable yet to ship in cars, but they're getting close. Hydrogen combustion engines? Great idea, Japanese automakers! Not. Is Tesla's full self driving beta progressing too slowly? And what does Waymo think? Over 1,100 electric buses set to transport fans at ‘green' FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in this week's green washing. Electric car commercials and everything else! Tesla was all charged up after posting a record net income of $438 million, and a revenue surge of 74% in Q12021. Yet, this profit didn't materialise thanks to car sales, so what else is at play? Adam Wong, Editor-in-Chief, The Fifth Person breaks down the numbers, and shares whether Tesla is in for a bumpy ride due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage, and two recent high profile crashes in the US and China. Show #764 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 30th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA Q1 2020 EARNINGS CALL SUMMARY Tesla just released its Q1 2020 earnings report and for the first time ever, the automaker reports a Q1 profit. The main financial details from the Q1 2020 report are as follows: $5.985 billion in revenue Profit of $0.09 per share MODEL Y In early Q1, we began production of Model Y in Fremont, using a combination of new production lines as well as shared capacity with Model 3. Our simplified and scalable approach to manufacturing is starting to take effect. We were able to build more Model Y vehicles in its first quarter of production than in the first two quarters of Model 3 in 2017. Model Y production also exceeded the first quarter of production of Model 3 in Shanghai, demonstrating continued improvements in program execution. Additionally, we achieved positive gross margin for Model Y in its first production quarter. REVENUE In Q1, we reached our highest ever revenue for a seasonally slower first quarter as our total revenue grew 32% YoY. Sequentially, our revenue was mainly impacted by lower deliveries, driven primarily by limitations on our ability to deliver vehicles towards the end of the quarter. As expected, our average selling price (ASP) declined further as our mix continues to shift from Model S and Model X to the more affordable Model 3 and Model Y. "Tesla’s net income for Q1 was small—just $16 million. Revenue for the quarter came in at $5.99 billion—higher than the $5.8 billion and slight loss that had been expected, but still down 19% from the previous quarter. While those financials revealed in its Q1 report—and its first-ever Q1 profit in this difficult time—are a surprise to Wall Street, many of the numbers found on the rest of Tesla’s report, which precedes a quarterly call with analysts and investors later today, closely followed what was reported earlier. Despite the shutdowns, Tesla also had its best Q1 ever in terms of vehicles produced." according to Green Car Reports: "On a 12-month trailing basis, Tesla claims that its deliveries are nearing 400,000—reflecting its strong growth in 2019—and it noted that “installed capacity” at its Fremont factory will extend to 500,000 this year. Tesla also revealed that it “achieved positive gross margin for Model Y in its first production quarter.” In other words it’s already making a profit on the Model Y—a first for any model from the company at such an early stage. Model Y deliveries from the company’s Gigafactory Berlin are anticipated in 2021, and Tesla also plans to eventually make Model Y in Shanghai." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128002_tesla-aims-to-scale-up-model-y-after-profitable-q1-but-delays-semi-deliveries-to-2021 "Tesla currently sits on $8.1 billion in cash, which should help the company weather the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Tesla Model Y production has also outpaced the initial ramp of the Made-in-China Model 3. This is a notable feat considering the fact that Tesla China’s Model 3 ramp is already far quicker than the company’s push for the sedan in Fremont." says Teslarati: "Elon did admit that he is a bit worried about the Fremont factory’s ongoing shutdown. He reiterates his recent controversial points on Twitter, criticizing the ongoing lockdown procedures in the Bay Area. He did state that it is not only Tesla that is at risk with the ongoing shutdown, as other companies are also in crisis now." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2020-earnings-call-updates-live-blog/ Fred's take from Electrek: "A surprise little profit is nice, but I think the best news in the results is an automotive gross margin of 25.5% and even positive gross margin on the Model Y. Both very impressive results. As for the bad news, it’s definitely the negative cash flow, which was to be expected due to Tesla producing about 15,000 cars that they couldn’t deliver at the end of the quarter due to limited operations amid the shelter-in-place orders. It increased its inventory significantly." https://electrek.co/2020/04/29/tesla-tsla-q1-2020-results/ TESLA SOLD UNDER 150,000 MODEL 3S IN LAST 4 QUARTERS IN THE U.S. "By the way of presenting the market potential for the Model Y, Tesla unknowingly revealed also the sales results for the Model 3 in the U.S. market." says InsideEVs: "We say unknowingly because obviously the company has the data, but doesn't want to report it to the public. Frankly, many other manufacturers also don't want to do it. The Q1 financial report shows us an interesting chart, which shows that during the last four quarters (Q2'2019 - Q1'2020) the company delivered under 150,000 Model 3 in the U.S. Taking into consideration previous data released by Tesla as well as other sources and IEVs' estimations, we assume that the U.S. sales of the Model 3 amounted in Q1 to about 18,000 (20% down year-over-year). Sales of the Tesla Model Y (which started in March) are estimated at above 3,000. We assume 3,200. Tesla also wrote that "We were able to build more Model Y vehicles in its first quarter of production than in the first two quarters of Model 3 in 2017." This means the production for sure was above 2,685." https://insideevs.com/news/419303/4-quarters-us-tesla-model-3-sales/ AFTER MODEL Y TEARDOWN, TESLA TALKS ABOUT CAST PARTS IN Q1 2020 UPDATE "Tesla says the Model 3 has 70 stamped parts for its rear underbody. It also confirms the Model Y has only castings for that structure, but it names only two. This is possibly because the company does not consider the bracket that joins them as relevant. Anyway, it is also cast." repoorts InsideEVs: "The promise contained in the Q1 2020 Update is that the two castings will be “eventually a single piece.” Sandy Munro mentioned in a recent video Elon Musk had promised that." https://insideevs.com/news/419266/tesla-model-y-cast-parts-q1-2020/ TESLA MODEL 3 REACHES #1 IN EUROPE " The European passenger plug-in vehicle market had 84,000 registrations in March (+41% year over year/YoY), a great performance considering the effect that several lockdowns across the continent have had. Furthermore, this is while the overall auto market was crashing (-52% YoY), inflating last month’s plug-in vehicle share to an amazing 9.9% (6% fully electric vehicles/BEVs)." writes CleanTechnica: "The usual end-of-quarter flood came for the world’s electromobility poster child, with 16,121 deliveries, giving the sports sedan its first European Best Seller title in 2020. The rabbit out of Tesla’s hat last month was the UK, with the Californian registering a record 4,718 units there, but that wasn’t the only 4-digit performance, as 2,034 deliveries were recorded in Germany, 1,385 units in France (a new record), 1,339 in the Netherlands, and a best ever 1,084 units in Sweden." Have a look at Jose Pointes and his ev-sales blog. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/30/tesla-model-3-reaches-1-in-europe-as-europe-reaches-10-market-share-march-2020/ EPA DENIES ELON MUSK'S CLAIMS OVER TESLA MODEL S RANGE TEST "The Environmental Protection Agency has rebuffed comments Tesla CEO Elon Musk made concerning what he calls an error during the Model S Long Range's testing process, which the executive says cost the car a 400-mile range estimate. The agency tells Roadshow it conducted the testing properly." according to CNET: "Musk said the Model S Long Range should boast a 400-mile range estimate, but instead, the EPA gave it a 391-mile estimate. Why? According to the CEO, at some point during the testing process, someone left the keys inside the car and the door open overnight. The Model S entered a "waiting for driver" mode, which depleted 2% of the EV's range, hence the sub-400-mile rating." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/elon-musk-tesla-model-s-epa-400-mile-ev/ TESLA CONFIRMS SELF-DRIVING AS A SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE BUT BRACE YOURSELF FOR THE PRICE "Tesla has confirmed that it will offer its Full Self-Driving package (FSD) as a subscription service, but you should brace yourself for the price." says electrek. Elon Musk said: "“I think we will offer Full Self-Driving as a subscription service, but it will be probably towards the end of this year. “I should say, it will still make sense to buy FSD as an option as in our view, buying FSD is an investment in the future. And we are confident that it is an investment that will pay off to the consumer – to the benefit of the consumer. In my opinion, buying FSD option is something people will not regret doing.”" Over $100 dollars a month. https://electrek.co/2020/04/30/tesla-self-driving-subscription-service-price/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK What car have you driven in your lifetime you would love to be able to convert to EV? In this video I’m going to dive into what we can expect. This quarter is unique due to 3 reasons: 1. Q1 is typically the slowest quarter for Tesla 2. Tesla has halted production at Fremont, Nevada, New York 3. This is the first quarter for Model Y deliveries Before going into some Q1 delivery estimates, here’s a few notes 1. Investors are forward-looking. 2. Can Tesla open their U.S. factories in Q2? 3. Investor focus on survival vs growth? For reference Q4 2019: 18k S/X produced 87k Model 3 produced Total 105k vehicles Rough estimates 85k production in Fremont 65-70k delivered 13.5k production in Shanghai 10k delivered Total production around 95k cars Total deliveries around 75-80k cars. Tesla reports deliveries of 63,000 units in Q1 2019 (+110%), consisting of 50,900 Model 3's & 12,100 Model S/X. This was below my expectations & shows that EV demand may not be as strong as Tesla/Elon originally anticipated. This hasn't changed my long-term belief in the story, but is undoubtably a near term setback. Watch until the end to hear my rant about why I think Tesla should raise capital. Friday 4th May 2018. VW BATTERY ANNOUNCEMENT GOES UNDER THE RADAR There was another big auto event and it wasn’t Tesla’s Q1 results. It was VW’s AGM. Tesla has a market capitalisation of $48.2bn. Shortly after the Q1 results and a strange earning call you and I will get onto later, VW signed battery contracts. And let me put this out there. Every single article I read today talked about Tesla losing value due to Elon Musk’s attitude on the investor call. Let me throw something your way, which might not be the whole reason, but I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere. Just after the Tesla announcement, VW Group said they have contracts on their battery supply and associated technology worth way more than previously announced. Worth DOUBLE previously announced. VW Group said they have contracts worth 40bn Euros, that’s $48bn. What did I just say Tesla was worth? That’s right, VW signed purchase contracts for just one part of their electric cars worth the whole of Tesla – autos and energy combined. My mind is a little blown. By 2025 VW will sell 3 million pure electric cars every single year, Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess told investors Thursday at the annual shareholder meeting in Berlin. VW currently makes more cars in four days than Tesla does in a year and has enormous firepower. “By 2020 we will offer our customers more than 25 new electric models and more than 20 plug-in hybrids,” Diess said. “In just a few years’ time, then, across all brands and regions, we aim to put the world’s largest fleet of electric vehicles on the road.” KIA UNVEILS NIRO EV IN JEJU Kia Motors took us by surprise yesterday by unveiling the pure BEV version of its Niro crossover, at the fifth "Electric Vehicle Expo" on the resort island of Jeju. Korea’s second largest carmaker showed off its Niro alongside the Niro PHEV and the Soul EV. The Niro is interesting because many people went gaga for the Hyundai Kona earlier this year, particularly the long range version with a 64kWh LGChem pack, with thermal management, and although the price isn’t known it won’t be Tesla prices. And now it's sister company Kia to take the spotlight. The Niro has the same parts, so can do 380 kilometres on a single charge of the 64kWh pack or 240 km on the smaller 39.2 kWh battery. Also, for Kia prices you get front collision avoidance, lane keeping assist and highway driving assist systems. Last year Kia sold 23,647 Niro hybrids and plug-in hybrid models. Kia plans to begin selling the Niro EV in the domestic market sometime soon after July, having received more than 5,000 pre-orders for the Niro EVs in February. Both Hyundai and Kia models will be supply restricted for a long time. GO INSIDE THE RIMAC FACTORY FOR A CLOSER LOOK CNET has posted a video of the Rimac factory. They say: "The Rimac C Two promises to make 1,914 horsepower and 1,696 pound-feet of torque, which should propel the car to 60 miles per hour in 1.85 seconds. Rimac estimates that the C Two's top speed will be around 258 miles per hour. While the preproduction car debuted at Geneva this year, Rimac estimates that it will be over a year before they start getting delivered to customers." I'll post a link to CNET in the show notes. they say the video offers a look into the Rimac factory and "explains how a Croatian electric hypercar startup came to source the wheels for its 2,000 hp car from a relatively small bespoke wheel company in sunny Vista, California." The video is 6mins long and if you like close up super slo-motions, you’re in for a treat. FAREWELL FLUFFERBOT & EARNINGS CALL REACTION The Tesla earnings call was very entertaining for someone not invested in the company. Elon was tolerant at best of some of the questions, especially things he thought were dumb to ask. Some highlights… Supercharger V3 network - something along the lines of 200-250kW is ultimate for pack size and C rating. Elon is open to other car makers using the network, for a fee. Share Price - The company’s share price dropped 5% on Wednesday and slid further on Thursday, wiping more than $3.4bn off the value of the company Model Y production - set to start within 24 months, 2020 being later than a Reuters report suggested, and it won't be at Fremont. That new facility’s location hasn’t been decided yet. Semi - 2,000 reserved. They're not actively selling. Musk said they could build a 500mile truck today, and by the time it launches, they'll have 600miles cracked. Is that because all these road tests are showing the letting regen do it's work on a heavy truck is giving them more range? Or platooning? Or better battery tech we don't know about? One thing JB Straubel said, when it was pointed out Daimler said the Semi was against the laws of physics, he didn't feel Daimler understood exactly what Tesla could do with batteries. China - He also mentioned that a Gigafactory for China would also be announced soon. And every future Giga factory would have car production and battery production under one roof. Cells - Cells used in Model 3 are the highest energy density cells used in any electric vehicle. “We have achieved this by significantly reducing cobalt content per battery pack while increasing nickel content and still maintaining superior thermal stability.” He gave us an insight into why the robots had held up production of the Model 3, including a machine which was trying to automate the process of bonding some fluff on top of the battery pack to deaden the sound, which is turns out wasn’t needed anyway. And the machine couldn’t match it up in the right place, a machine Elon dubbed Flufferbot. Sadly, it had to go. In a moment of pure internet, a Flufferbot now has it’s own twitter account. And in a moment which reminded me of pure Steve Jobs, when he wanted Apple to be a private company which didn't answer to bozo analysts (although I think analysts are a fine bunch of folk) Elon let rip. He cut off one question and then, after another, took a 14 second pause and went to a young YouTuber who seems to have found his way onto the call by way of a campaign to ask one question for retail investors. Elon kept him on for TWELVE questions. So established media and analysts got upset because their exclusive club had been gate-crashed and they had a good moan online today. Bernstein: "Beneath the bizarre theatrics, however, we see Tesla's Q1 as in-line with expectations on most metrics, including revenues, gross margins, and free cash flow." Morgan Stanley: "Irrespective of the Tesla CEO's annoyance with the genre of questions he was receiving from the analyst community, we note that an important part of Tesla's success has been its relationship with the capital markets in funding its ambitious plans." JP Morgan: "We expect TSLA to fall today after CEO Elon Musk dismissed multiple analyst questions as 'dry' and 'boring' (including questions probing what we feel are key topics, such as profitability of the Model 3 and the company's capital requirements)." Piper Jaffray: " The unorthodox behaviour sparked an after-hours sell-off. We still recommend TSLA, but in the next few months especially, we would expect significant volatility." Baird: "Ignore the noise and focus on metrics. TSLA reported solid results and is successfully ramping Model 3 vehicle and battery production" Nomura: "No shareholder wants to see a CEO lose his patience over important, albeit mundane questions" Evercore ISI: ""'Wow' is the only way to describe the Tesla Q1 call which was unlike anything we have heard before." NEW SWEDISH CAR POLICIES EXPECTED TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET SHARE IN SWEDEN Zachary at Clean Technica has picked up on a story about new tax in Sweden from July which will penalise gas and diesel, whilst plug ins get a boost. In the first three years of owning an ICE car based on CO2 emissions. Sweden has 6.1% of new vehicle registrations being plug ins, and previous 5 year exemption to vehicle tax is now completely removed and zero emission vehicles get a bonus up to 25% of the list price, which is up to $6,700, for something like a Nissan LEAF. Whereas buying a BMW i3 REX gets you $5,600 bonus. ENPHASE REPORTS ‘DECENT’ Q1 2018 EARNINGS AS CFO RESIGNS And the last story today, a bit of solar. First up Enphase, makers of micro-inverters. Which particularly interest me, I don't have solar at the moment and really want to start adding some. However I also want to cashflow it, and also want to build up with some on the garage roof before any on the house. So micro-inverters would be an interesting way to scale up if i get some solar this year. I like that each panel can generate grid-ready AC power. Their latest results were $70m of revenue in Q1 18 and their cash balance was almost double, largely due to private equity investment in the quarter. They shipped 611,000 micro inverters last year. The IQ7, their latest model now available in the US and UK, soon Germany and Austria. "Unlike the rest of its inverters, the IQ 8 platform is designed to support both grid-tied and off-grid applications, supported by the company’s Ensemble software" say GreenTechMedia. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 3rd May 2018. TESLA Q1 RESULTS Model 3 production hit 2,270/week in April for the 3rd straight week over 2,000 Cash balance of $2.7 billion at the end of Q1 2018 Capex projection reduced from >$3.4 billion to
Wednesday 2nd May 2018. TESLA RESULTS DAY FOR Q1 If you’re quick off the mark you’ll be listening to this before close of trading on Wednesday, in which case, a gold star to you! Tesla will announce their Q1 results after the bell on the 2nd If you’re listening to this afterwards, here’s a fun game to play, are any of these predictions even close. But first an update on the Tesla Model 3 tracker: the estimate is 22,476 Model 3s produced at a rate of 2,324 per week. And a reminder of what was actually delivered in Q1, it was 11,730 Model S, 10,070 Model X and 8,180 Model 3. As I mentioned yesterday on the show, I expect revenue to be USD3.2bn - 3.3bn based on all the various analysts and Tesla watchers. For the Q1 loss, the common figure seems to be USD700m. Before the Model 3 their margins were comfortably in the Mid-20%’s whereas now, thanks to Model 3 investment, it’s under 15%. I’m hoping they release separate data for Tesla Energy, with things like their massive battery pack installations now online. We may hear more about Tesla Semi deposits as that would be some good news to offset the Model 3 ramp being a little slower than guided. The Q&A will be right around the time I usually write the news so let’s see how tomorrow goes. APRIL EV SALES SCORECARD Now we’re into May and InsideEVs have kicked off their April sales tracker for US sales of EVs. This is against a backdrop of global sales being off the charts recently, with the Nissan LEAF selling 10,000 a month, split between Japan, Europe equally and slightly fewer in USA. In fact the prices have been increased by Nissan, which was a frustration for anyone waiting for discount, the opposite happened. And on the SpeakEV forum one dealer posted a crazy PCP finance plan for silly money, massive deposit down. April didn’t really follow the trend in the US however with LEAF sales down, from 1,500 in March to 1,171 in April. I’d love to see some guidance from Nissan on why that was, but I doubt we will. The inventory is increasing, apparently 2085 were on dealer lots on April 1st and 3,123 were with dealers by last weekend so let’s hope they shift them. The biggest seller again will be Model 3, they reckon 3,875 deliveries, on top of 1,250 Model S and 1,025 Model X. And a total of almost 20,000 plug in deliveries for the month of April across the board. LA GETS $36 MILLION GRANT FOR ELECTRIC BUSES OK let’s start the news in LA and the Department of Transportation said on Monday they will award $36.1 million to purchase 112 battery electric buses. The cash comes from the California Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program and Los Angeles wants to be 100 percent zero-emission buses by 2030. That’s a wonderful goal, and remember cities like Schenzen have already migrated all their public buses over full BEV, almost 15,000 of them in one city alone. China is far ahead. INFINITI ELECTRIC CARS TO OFFER AT LEAST 500KM RANGE Moving to Infiniti and you heard on the show recently about plans to build a new electrified vehicle platform, well I have more detail now. And Infiniti's battery-electric carswill come with a base range of at least 500km. Roland Krueger, Infiniti Brand President, suggested 311 miles (500km)would be the minimum range offered by cars on the new battery-based platform. He also suggested the platform can handle up to 300kW. Yes please. Want now.I don’t need now, I get the train to work and my weekend mileage happily covered off by a 30-40kWh pack but like a child NEEEEDS Ice cream, I NEEEED that car. "In the end we realised we needed a platform that could hold an EV and e-Power and that made us decide to go for a completely new platform," Krueger told Automotive News, the platform eventually being the starting point for every single Infiniti car. The platform allows for one or two motors for AWD, plus of course Nissan has their e-power technology which is a hybrid without a plug, where the REX charges the battery, and the battery only ever drives the wheels. MOTIV INTRODUCING COST-CUTTING BATTERY CONTROLLER FOR ITS EV CHASSIS “Electric truck developer Motiv Power Systemshas developed a new unified battery controller that can cut costs, increase cargo capacity and speed up the build process for trucks based on its medium-duty EPIC chassis” reports Trucks.com. So rather than 6 controller needed if you had 6 battery packs, now you just need one. That saves money, streamlines build, allow more flexibility about this body can be fitted on it, and it also saves space which makes room for even more cells. Whilst Tesla get the headlines for their Semi, it shows plenty of others are working on trucks and even last mile solutions. Motiv have called this chassis the EPIC. “Motiv’s goal with the EPIC was to create a simple, reliable and cost-effective all-electric chassis capable of meeting the varying needs of medium-duty fleet operators while streamlining the build process” says Jim Castelaz, Motiv’s founder and chief executive. WINNEBAGO LAUNCHES ALL-ELECTRIC/ZERO-EMISSION COMMERCIAL VEHICLE PLATFORM WGO So who could use that platform? Let’s not leave you hanging! Winnebago – makers of recreational vehicles or RVs - is launching their all-electric platform their Specialty Vehicles Division. Along Motiv who will develop and supply the electric-powered chassis. As part of the venture together Winnebago will invest in Motiv. How long until we see an all-electric RV. For now it will be their commercial trucks division though. And from their website, I’ve spent far too long on winnebagoind.com today looking at RVs, they say: “Available on 33' and 38' Class A commercial platforms, this 100% Battery Electric Vehicle qualifies for many federal, state and local incentives for vehicle purchase and infrastructure upgrades, including charging stations. Depending on interior energy demands, this ground- breaking Class A coach delivers 85 to 125 miles on a full charge, making it ideal for short-range, fixed-base applications.” https://winnebagoind.com/products/specialty-vehicles/2019/commercial-shells/overview AUSTRALIA’S FIRST ELECTRIC CAR TO BE LAUNCHED IN INVERELL “Australia’s first fully electric light commercial vehicle, the ACE-EV, will be officially launched at the National Transport Museum this weekend as part of Inverell’s inaugural electric vehicle expo” says Inverell Times website. ACE-EV believes that on the world stage, Australians are lagging behind in the purchase of electric cars. In 2017, Australians bought 1,680 EVs, of the 2,000,000 now on the roads in total worldwide, while China purchased 680,000 in 2017 alone. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jun/07/electric-cars-sales-2-million-worldwide-global-sales BENTLEY MULSANNE SUCCESSOR MIGHT GO ELECTRIC ROUTE OK think of a car – now double it. And double it again. And you’ll get to the size of the Bentley Mulsanne, part car, and part mobile sitting room. There will be an updated one in the early 2020s and Bentley still haven’t committed to a drivetrain, which leaves the door open for an electric version. If they can be sure to get a large enough pack in, and fast charging, for the demands of high end buyers (whether or not they actually need either) then electric power would be the ultimate way to waft along the roads in silence. ELECTRIC CARS ARE CREATING A NEW KIND OF CAR ENTHUSIAST You and I not normal, says Autotrader, rather EV enthusiasts are an emerging breed of car AutoTrader says we’d never normally care about cars, which is a bit rubbish, I’ve loved cars since I could put posters on my bedroom wall. However Eric Brandt says: “electrified cars are attracting nerds like my friends who suddenly become very interested in cars when they get closer to being computers that can take you to work. They want the latest technology -- including propulsion technology. They want the biggest possible infotainment screen that can do the most possible things. They want to see the stats on exactly how far they can go on how much electricity they still have, and they want to know down to the minute when their car will be done charging.” I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 4th April 2018. TESLA QUARTERLEY RESULTS ROUNDUP Let’s start with Tesla’s take on their results announced today: “Q1 production totaled 34,494 vehicles, a 40% increase from Q4 and by far the most productive quarter in Tesla history. 24,728 were Model S and Model X, and 9,766 were Model 3. The Model 3 output increased exponentially, representing a fourfold increase over last quarter. This is the fastest growth of any automotive company in the modern era. If this rate of growth continues, it will exceed even that of Ford and the Model T. We were able to double the weekly Model 3 production rate during the quarter by rapidly addressing production and supply chain bottlenecks, including several short factory shutdowns to upgrade equipment. In the past seven days, Tesla produced 2,020 Model 3 vehicles. In the next seven days, we expect to produce 2,000 Model S and X vehicles and 2,000 Model 3 vehicles. It is a testament to the ability of the Tesla production team that Model 3 volume now exceeds Model S and Model X combined. What took our team five years for S/X, took only nine months for Model 3. Given the progress made thus far and upcoming actions for further capacity improvement, we expect that the Model 3 production rate will climb rapidly through Q2. Tesla continues to target a production rate of approximately 5,000 units per week in about three months, laying the groundwork for Q3 to have the long-sought ideal combination of high volume, good gross margin and strong positive operating cash flow. As a result, Tesla does not require an equity or debt raise this year, apart from standard credit lines. Q1 deliveries totaled 29,980 vehicles, of which 11,730 were Model S, 10,070 were Model X, and 8,180 were Model 3. Net orders for Model S and X were at an all-time Q1 record, and demand remains very strong. Model S and X customer vehicles in transit were high. 4,060 Model S and X vehicles were in transit to customers at the end of Q1, which was 68% higher than at the end of Q4 2017. An additional 2,040 Model 3 vehicles were also in transit to customers. These vehicles will be delivered in early Q2 2018, which keeps us on track for our full-year 2018 Model S and X delivery guidance. Finally, we would like to share two additional points about Model 3: The quality of Model 3 coming out of production is at the highest level we have seen across all our products. This is reflected in the overwhelming delight experienced by our customers with their Model 3's. Our initial customer satisfaction score for Model 3 quality is above 93%, which is the highest score in Tesla's history. Net Model 3 reservations remained stable through Q1. The reasons for order cancellation are almost entirely due to delays in production in general and delays in availability of certain planned options, particularly dual motor AWD and the smaller battery pack. As described above, owner happiness with the product is extremely high. We would like to thank our customers, suppliers and investors for their continued patience and belief in Tesla. And now how did the new sites react and offer their opinion? Autoblog: they were mostly factual but did say “Shares of the Palo Alto, California-based company, which have fallen around a fifth in value in the past week, jumped 6.4 percent in premarket trade in New York.” Electric Cars Report: “Tesla delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as the company only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct. Final numbers could vary by up to 0.5%.” InsideEVs take was: “Everything appears to be falling into place finally for the Model 3 and perhaps even Tesla’s oftdelayed production ramp. Let’s hope it’s all upwards from here.” The Drive said: “Considering the amount of bad press Tesla has gotten over the past few days, this relatively sunny production report is well timed. But Tesla needs to keep its eye on the prize and continue ramping up Model 3 production over the next few months.” FISKER PLODS ON If you’re going to release news on Tesla results day, it better be good, because it’s hard to get a look in today. Henrik Fisker insists that work continues to be done on an entry-level electric vehicle priced at around $40,000. In fact they’re working on several ideas all at once, including the EMotion and the Orbit, using solid state batteries. He told Autocar: “In the future, people are going to choose a mobility device that is the best [suited] for the trip they’re doing that day. It could be an electric bike or your own car, somebody else’s car or a shuttle. “I don’t think the old ideal, where somebody says ‘we’re only going to make sports cars; that’s our brand’ is going to work in the future. People will have four or five mobility devices and, if they like your brand, you should be able to service them in all those areas,” he said. ELECTRIC VW eCRAFTER VAN Vans might not be as sexy as sports cars, but per miles driven, can make a huge difference to air quality. The VW electric van called the eCrafter will make it’s debut on 24th April ahead of testing in May. Fleetpoint say: “The first test vehicles were handed over to a group of major European customers at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ headquarters in Hannover in December. By allowing the vehicle to undergo tests with selected fleet operators, the company will be able to incorporate findings and learnings into the final design and production version of the zero-emission van. The eCrafter’s lithium-ion battery is completely integrated into the underbody, at a CCS charging station supplying the battery can be charged to 80 per cent in just 45 minutes. From a wallbox, charging time to 100 per cent is around 5.5 hours BUICK HEADS EAST Buick has announced more vehicles for China. They will introduce the Velite 6 plug-in hybrid and Velite 6 EV will join the portfolio alongside the Velite 5 and LaCrosse Hybrid. All we know is that in 2017 they said there would be a range extender coming. The extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) consists of GM’s EVT variable transmission, permanent-magnet electric motor drive unit, a direct injection engine and a lithium-ion battery pack. Buick said the electric driving range should be around 62 miles, while the gasoline engine provides up to 435 miles of range. NEW GEELY PHEV THIS WEEK Staying with China and domestic maker Geely, they of Volvo fame, has launched a new PHEV called the Borui GE. It combines a three-cylinder 1.5-liter direct-injected petrol unit with an electric motor and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. And that engine? Yep it comes from Volvo, where it already powers the XC40 T3. It will eventually be adopted by the Swedish company’s upcoming electrified models of the 40 series, and by the certain Lynk vehicles. The official debut of the Borui GE is April 9th and on sale this Summer. Carscoops say: “In the cabin, it gets a massive infotainment system, with a 12.2-inch touchscreen display that provides access to various functions. Other features include wireless charging for smartphones, ambient lighting and various LED decorations. Despite the generous screen added in the middle of the dashboard, Geely chose not to offer a digital instrument cluster, probably to keep costs down.
