This is the third episode in my “Back to Home School” series and it is a great one! In this episode I got to talk all things home schooling with my friend, and fellow Christian Parenting podcast host, Monica Swanson. Monica is a mom to four boys and lives on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii. Monica home schooled all her boys, 3 of which have graduated, and is still home schooling her last one. She recently wrote a book called Becoming Home Schoolers, sharing the story of their home schooling journey, along with tons of other helpful ideas, information and inspiration. Monica and I had the best time talking together. You're going to love our conversation and all the stories we tell. You'll feel like you're just hanging out with 2 of your friends. Come join the fun! Places to find Monica: Her website her Her podcast here Her Instagram account here Her books here, here, here and here! Here are some of my favorite quotes from this episode: “Home school kids have more time to pursue their passions.” Monica Swanson “Home schoolers are prepared for the real world.” Monica Swanson “The number one reason we chose to home school is because I wanted learning about God, praying together, and reading the Bible together to be a part of their school experience because that is the most important thing you'll ever learn.” Greta Eskridge “There is no such thing as a neutral education.” Monica Swanson “Home schoolers are critical thinkers, they're learners, they're readers, and they know how to figure things out. Not every home schooler, of course. But a lot of them!” Greta Eskridge “It's so tempting to have a whole curriculum for your 3 year old but if you just live life with your 3 year old and have him be a part of it, what you're creating is a lifelong learner because you're showing them that learning is happening all the time.” Greta Eskridge “Sometimes we forget how important it is to enjoy our kids. We get so caught up in what we feel like we have to do that we forget to enjoy our time with them or to enjoy them.” Greta Eskridge “The best is yet to come! The late teen and young adult years are so fun and it is the best reward.” Monica Swanson “It is painful joy to watch our kids fly. We're excited for them and we have joy for them but there is pain there because things are changing.” Greta Eskridge “The home school lifestyle is not just a way to educate your kids but a way to get to know them and be involved in their lives.” Monica Swanson

It may come as a shock for non-tech-savvy parents and grandparents, but their elementary-schoolers are already learning how to code. On Dec. 9, Henrico elementary school students and their families mastered binary codes, learned about algorithms, maneuvered computer-controlled robots, and were introduced to the basics of cybersecurity during an event held by CodeVA, a computer science education nonprofit. CodeVA's “Family Code Adventure” event, hosted at the Oak Avenue Complex in Highland Springs, marked the end of “Computer Science Education Week” – now officially observed in Virginia. Jodi Mockabee joins Yvette Hampton to talk about Creating a family culture of intentionality and why this is important, and gives tips for preserving the mental, emotional, and spiritual health of your family. Jodi's goal is to encourage homeschoolers to be intentional in their decisions, but the central conflict is that she herself is not sure if she is doing enough. Here's what Jodi and I cover: 1. The importance of accountability in homeschooling 2. The idea that we will never be able to do enough 3. The need to be humble in our homeschooling journey Watch this episode on the Homeschool Insights YouTube channel. Jodi Mockabee's goal is to encourage homeschoolers to be intentional in their decisions, but the central conflict is that she herself is not sure if she is doing enough. Jodi Mockabee is a homeschooling mom of four who has been married for 20 years. She is also a speaker, writer, and blogger. This episode is about the benefits of embracing accountability. Jodi Mockabee learned that asking if you're doing enough is not a bad thing, and that it can be a form of accountability that helps keep you humble. "You know, that one voice, and we've talked about it earlier, of am I doing enough? That tends to stick around with home. Schoolers almost on the daily. I discovered recently that that is not. A bad thing to ask that." This is an excerpt from the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast, which features over 500 episodes of practical homeschool encouragement and resources. [Jodi Mockabee] This is going to be a recent discovery for myself, so I'm just going to share this because it kind of encouraged me. You know, that one voice, and we've talked about it earlier, of am I doing enough? That tends to stick around with homechoolers almost on the daily. I discovered recently that that is not a bad thing to ask that. And so I realized when that voice is there, that is almost like a form of accountability for us as moms and so if we ever get so comfortable and feel like we're doing amazing then we perhaps are probably missing a few things. So I just want to encourage you. If you hear that voice, don't look at it as shame or guilt or something to bring you down. Let it be an encouragement to you that you care and that you're always striving to make intentional decisions for your kids. And that kind of turned for me this last year. I just realized that I need to embrace that. That's a good thing to carry with you, to wonder if you're doing enough. Because ultimately, we will never be able to do enough because we are human and sinful. But it's okay to strive and run the race. It's okay to do that. It's okay to hope that you're doing enough but not really know if you are. That's a good place to be that keeps us humble and always kind of accountable. So that's my encouragement to you. Don't necessarily reject that. Just kind of embrace that voice and use it as a form of accountability. Intro Bryant Santana is the CEO and Creator of TheMovingTeacher.com. As an educator who was working abroad and in the US, he found that finding materials was just difficult. So Bryant practically single handedly began to create the site TheMovingTeacher.com site that has free to low-cost resources, so educators, guardians, students, and more are not breaking the bank or their nerves looking for materials on the internet. Bryant is slowly becoming a one stop shop for all things education. He prides himself on providing credible resources, that he vets daily. Bryant realizes that a lot of things exist but not are all legit. He also feels along with providing quality and credible resources that one of the most important things is the ability to tailor things how you want them to be and to have a purpose, so your child can have greater understanding. Top Three Takeaways We tear apart the myth that homeschooling takes lots of money, and resources. How homeschooling provides more attention to an area and a child can learn a lot more in shorter periods of time. Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the Left has been spent into spasms of outrage because of a Florida bill which would prohibit public school teachers from talking to elementary schoolers about sexual orientation and gender identity. What kind of creep could possibly oppose a law like that? Well, we'll find out. Also, Canada descends into full on totalitarianism, even as we are told that Putin is the greatest threat to the west. And scholars have discovered that diversity training doesn't actually achieve anything. What's their answer? To do more diversity training, of course. Let’s address this global, unique moment where homeschooling is suddenly center-stage and millions of families are experiencing a lifestyle change that is in some ways similar and in some ways different than the choice many of us made to do this homeschooling project. The move from having kids in school to having their education thrust upon you is creating a serious amount of anxiety, confusion, and disruption to what was considered ordinary life. If that weren’t enough, parents who used to send their kids to school and then drive to an office are now also at home, trying to conduct a 40-hour workweek while they educate their children using a school system that they didn’t create. What I want to do today is look at homeschooling as a philosophy, and looking at the dynamic of what happens when you combine working from home with education from home. It is no easy thing to be confined in your house, to not have access to much of the entertainment and distractions we’re accustomed to, and to be so uncertain about what the future holds. For all of us in this conundrum, I want to talk about ways we can foster learning and play and cooperation while parents are trying to get their jobs done. I’m going to break this up into tips for those of us who are suddenly-at-home schoolers and then some tips for working from home while schooling. In this episode with Natalie Pipkin, founder of Black World Schoolers, she told the stories behind the research data that shows that African Americans are increasingly pulling their Black children out of schools and deciding to homeschool for a variety of reasons. Natalie shares her own personal experience with racism as a school age child, and how when her own children began experiencing it--she went into protection and fear-based parenting mode. Natalie and her husband decided it was time to stop fighting for their children to be accepted in “in the classroom but left out of the curriculum” and after fours years at a private classical education institution, Natalie decided to shift to what she calls Black World Schooling. “We believe centering the wisdom, truth, experiences, achievements, and beauty of Africans and those throughout the African Diaspora can have a unbelievably powerful impact on black children around the globe. We invite you to join us on this journey of self love, cultural appreciation, and black liberation.” -- Black WorldSchoolers The discussion also covers some juicy themes such as: *Classical education as the breeding ground of white supremacy *Both the privilege and sacrifice of choosing to send Black children to school or to home school *Distinctions between homeschooling and world schooling *Strategies for in- school parents to engage in homeschooling practices Thank you Natalie for reminding us that our ancestors have always homeschooled and educated our children. As Black parents we are always teaching and educating them on their history, how to love themselves, and how to navigate being Black. So regardless of whether our children go to school or stay at home, we as Black parents are always their first and consistent teacher--always guiding them back to themselves with love and affirmation. Chantelle Grubbs, her husband Tony and her five beautiful kids have been using the Brave Writer lifestyle since 2014. In Spring 2016, Chantelle and her friend Christy Thomas launched a venture they call Play 4 Life Moms based on their experiences with the Brave Writer lifestyle. Chantelle fell into homeschooling because she didn’t think public schools were offering enough to her first two boys. She felt the school expected every child to perform and act the same way, and that’s just not the case. Chantelle was first introduced to the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling, but she had difficulty implementing it. When she started, she didn’t know how to translate the ideas into actual lesson plans. It ended up looking a lot like school at home, and that didn’t work. “It took a lot of tears and trying over and over again to come to a place where we were enjoying ourselves and also learning at the same time.” Chantelle noticed that her kids were more engaged with learning when they were having fun with activities. This is because, when children are problem solving and using their bodies, they’re imprinting the lesson in a different way than just reading about it. When Chantelle started a weekly Poetry Tea Time in her household, her two oldest children were reluctant to enjoy poetry. Of course, they still came for the snacks. Over time, they came to enjoy the poetry too. Now everyone in the Grubbs household is excited for Poetry Tea Time, although not everyone likes tea and some of the older children aren’t able to be there for a whole hour – but that’s fine! Lemonade, snacks and poetry for 10 minutes is still a great family learning experience. Chantelle’s biggest challenge has been figuring out what is best for each child, and accepting that they all need something different. No two people learn in exactly the way. One of her children is actually finding the support and education she needs in a public school environment, and Chantelle couldn’t be happier. “I think you have to do what’s best for each child. That’s the biggest obstacle. It’s not always the easiest thing – the easiest thing is to pick one thing and have everyone do it – but that doesn’t make it the best thing for each child.” Play 4 Life Moms allows you to sign up for encouraging texts or emails that inspire you to build connections in your home through play. The service started after Chantelle and Christy interacted during one of my Facebook Live videos. They both wanted a solution to remind themselves, as homeschooling mothers, to slow down and embrace play. The text messages range from challenges to positive comments to inspiring quotes that help homeschooling parents live up to their best intentions. “Those little reminders help bring you back to where you want to be. That’s what we’re trying to achieve for other moms.” Some example texts: Drink a warm cup of tea today and savor the warm decorations in your house. “Play builds the kind of free-and-easy, try-it-out, do-it-yourself character that our future needs.” –James Hines, Jr. Try to sit down to eat during lunch this week. Enjoy your food. You’re important Having these quotes and reminders on a daily basis help create a sustained imagination and allow mothers to tap into their own experiences and best intentions. (http://play4lifemoms.com/). Having your own story is what counts – not being somebody’s poster child for their story. Every home education experience is different. Chantelle’s incredible story and willingness to adapt will be an inspiration for any #BraveSchooler. One of the most sought-after names in Robotech RPG circles, Dave Deitrich was the main driving force behind the Third Invid War Robotech RPG fan-supplement. Nowadays it is not uncommon to see posts on the Palladium Robotech RPG forum or other Robotech boards asking whatever became of him and whether he will ever do more work with the Third Invid War supplement. In the first hour of this five-hour talkcast, we interview him and get his take on the past of Robotech fandom. After that, Tommy Yune shows up, and we all have another hour and a half of conversation. Then he has to go, but old-school Robotech fans John Hokansen (from the old mailing list) and Ken Olson (from Robotech Research) join us for some more conversation. This is one of the best shows yet, and more are in the offing! (NOTE: There are scattered four-letter words in the later portions of this show.) Thanks to Robotech fan Wayne Joyce for saving this show!
