"Deep Fear" de Marcus Adams sorti fin 2023 au Royaume-Uni mais arrivé chez nous en février confronte des requins et des trafiquants de drogue autour d'une épave remplie de cocaïne et, sans être exceptionnel, s'avère posséder d'assez bonnes scènes sous-marines. Mais le film le plus attendu de 2024 est bien sûr "Sous la Seine" de Xavier Gens qui a fortement divisé mais que nous défendrons plutôt ici et qui voit un requin s'en prendre à une épreuve de triathlon en plein Paris. Un film qui a d'abord fait scandale au marché du film de Cannes à cause de son extrême violence, avant de devenir un des films les plus cultes de la French Frayeur, cette vague de films d'horreur français qui ont envahis les salles et les rayons de dvd au début des années 2000 avec entre autre Haute Tension d'Alexandre Aja, A l'intérieur de Bustillo et Maury ou encore Frontières de Xavier Gens. Martyrs reste à ce jour réputé pour être un des films les plus violents du lot, et est souvent vu comme un rite de passage pour les cinéphiles adeptes de films ultra-violents. Une violence extrême à laquelle l'équipe s'est confrontée aujourd'hui pour pouvoir vous dire si, plus de 15 ans après, Martyrs, vaut le coup d'être revu, si c'est bien plus qu'un simple ride trashouille où s'il ne vaut pas sa réputation. Come dice la tagline del film "farà molto male". Frontiers fa davvero male e lo fa senza alcuna pietà. Un male che ti entra dentro, ti contamina senza sosta e ti fa soffrire ben oltre la fine del film. Dopo The Divide, già protagonista delle Recensioni CaRfatiche Podcast, Xavier Gens torna alla ribalta con questa pellicola precedente, che personalmente ho trovato la migliore del quartetto horror made in France (assieme a Martyrs, Indside, Alta tensione che pure sono film eccelsi) che andava fortissimo in quegli anni. Un gruppo di ragazzi sbandati e dal futuro incerto compie una rapina e decide di fuggire oltre il confine per iniziare una nuova vita. Ma si fermeranno presso un hotel che segnerà l'inizio di un orribile incubo, fatto di sangue, morte e politica. Perché c'è tantissima politica in Frontiers, a iniziare dalla splendida sequenza iniziale; forse il film più maturo di Gens, che racconta la società moderna ed i suoi aspetti più truci, dimostrando di non imparare nulla dagli errori della storia trascorsa. Una storia di perversione, torture indicibili, budella esposte e sangue a ettolitri, che non mancherà assolutamente di accontentare i fan più esigenti e quelli più affini all'horror di classe. La figura dell'anziano gerarca nazista fa venire i brividi ancora oggi, se ci penso. Se non l'avete mai visto, non potete tirarvi indietro dal recuperarlo e non lo dimenticherete mai, perché Frontiers entrerà nei meandri più oscuri della vostra mente e provocherà le vostre paure più inaffrontabili.

All month long, we'll be reviewing frigid films to chill the bones. First up this month is our review of Xavier Gens', Cold Skin (2017)! Starring David Oakes, Ray Stevenson, and Aura Garrido (in full body creature makeup and prosthetics), the film is a horror tinged psycho drama concerning men waging a constant war of attrition with strange amphibious humanoids from the deep. Shot on location in on scenic beaches of the Canary Islands, the film is heavily allegorical in nature, with very explicit references being made to World War I, and The Divine Comedy. Deliberately repetitious in it's structure, the film suffers from a bit of an identity crisis, mostly failing to comfortably settle into a rhythm or tone, resulting in either a heady character study interrupted by action beats, or a rather tame horror film weighed down by frequent lulls in the action. Not at all lacking in creativity or enthusiasm, the film plays host to many interesting ideas and allegories, but ultimately fails to engage due to it's inconsistent pace and tone, coupled with a less than satisfying conclusion. Ecco un altro film che conosciamo solamente io, il regista e un paio di amici che ho costretto a vedere. The Divide è un titolo meraviglioso che, utilizzando un sinistro e angosciante sfondo apocalittico, mostra allo spettatore ogni sfumatura di grettezza, egoismo e follia umana, quando un gruppo di sopravvissuti si trova costretto a condividere interminabili giornate all'interno di uno scantinato. Mentre il cibo scarseggia e la speranza di uscire vivi da quel posto si affievolisce sempre di più, i protagonisti regrediranno lentamente ad una sorta di stato animalesco e parole come etica e moralità perderanno di significato. Xavier Gens, già regista del meraviglioso Frontiers, ci sbatte sulla faccia e senza alcuna vergogna ciò che in realtà siamo, quando ogni certezza viene a mancare e l'istinto di sopravvivenza è la sola cosa che ci spinge a resistere. Una cattiveria che mina anche il corpo, facendolo marcire pezzo dopo pezzo e le straordinarie interpretazioni di tutto il cast valgono da sole la visione attenta. Meraviglioso, cinico, paranoico e senza pietà. Alla larga gli amanti dell'happy end, perché qui troverete solamente violenza e desolazione...ma anche grandissimo cinema e valide idee messe in scena alla stragrande, pur senza un budget milionario.

It's  been called The Paris Texas Chainsaw Massacre by smartasses, but Xavier Gens debut feature is a one of the most overtly political movies of French extreme horror. Inspired by the rise of right wing nationalism and violent clashes between protestors and Parisian police in the early 21st century, Frontiers is the grim tale of four Muslims that escape Paris' burning streets after committing a robbery only to fall captive to Nazi saluting cannibals on the outskirts of society. Before we get into reviewing the not quite Lovecraftian Cold Skin, we've got some real eldritch horrors to discuss. Cut rate Corman clone Charles Band - yeah, him - is producing a sequel to From Beyond called Miskatonic U: The Resonator and there are behind the scenes photos to feast your eyes upon if you're into that type of thing. We're not really, which is probably why we ultimately diverge into a conversation on which Fantastic Four film is the worst and how Kang the Conquerer fits into the MCU. Skip ahead to about 28:45 if you'd rather not hear about the latest venture from the producer of Corona Zombies and would rather hear about this rather tepid adaptation from New French Extremity director Xavier Gens. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. In the early 2000’s, the French extreme movement turned the independent horror world upside down. Some of the most popular films of the era were MARTYRS, INSIDE, HIGH TENSION, and Xavier Gens FRONTIER(S). But now, years later, the talent behind these films have moved onto other subgenres including COLD SKIN (2018), a period piece film, that Xavier Gens has adapted from successful novel by Albert Sanchez Pinol. In 1914, a young man sails to a remote South Atlantic island as a weatherman; someone to chart the conditions of the isolated British territory. The only other resident is a lighthouse keeper named Gruner. Gruner explains the prior weatherman passed from typhus leaving him alone for many months. As Friend sets about his work, the second night of his one year term, his cabin is attacked by something extraordinary from the sea. Fleeing, he holes up with Gruner in the lighthouse only to find out the threat may be unending. Receiving strong reviews from the festival circuit, the US distribution to the film was picked up by Samuel Goldwyn Films. Unlike his prior films, COLD SKIN is a new direction for Xavier Gens. Como no solo de Star Trek vive el hombre, aprovechamos para compartir con vosotros, como hacemos periódicamente, uno de nuestros momentos favoritos del año: nuestra visita al Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantastic de Cataluña, Sitges 2017, que este año tuvo lugar entre el 5 y el 15 de octubre. Toda una tradición anual en la que os comentamos las películas más freaks que hemos descubierto en el festival, durante nuestra breve (pero intensa) estancia en Sitges . De la ciencia ficción y el terror, pasando por el western oscuro o el cine de samurais, en una de las ediciones con mayor nivel de calidad que recordamos desde hace tiempo. Brimstone (Martin Koolhoven, con Dakota Fanning y Guy Pearce): En un pueblo del viejo Oeste americano, una joven madre de familia, queda aterrorizada ante la llegada del nuevo e intimidante predicador, que es el preludio de una escalada de calamidades, en un western con lectura feminista con una intrigante estructura narrativa, de adelante hacia atrás en el tiempo La Piel Fría (Xavier Gens, con Aura Garrido, David Oakes y Ray Stevenson): A principios del siglo XX, dos hombres, responsables de un faro en un islote en el fin del mundo, conviven con una mujer anfibia humanoide que se ha refugiado con ellos, mientras resisten noche tras noche el asedio del resto de la comunidad anfibia. How To Talk With Girls In A Party (John Cameron Mitchell, con Elle Fanning, Alex Sharp, Nicole Kidman y Matt Lucas, basado en el relato de Neil Gaiman): Tres adolescentes británicos de los años 70 se cuelan en lo que parece una fiesta que realmente es un tour turístico de unos alienígenas. Uno de ellos traba amistad con una de las aliens, con la apariencia de una joven adolescente y tienen una relación amorosa que llevará a una revolución en la comunidad alienígena. Real (Lee Sa-Rang, con Kim Soo-Hyun): Un lider de la mafia coreana con problemas de trastorno de personalidad múltiple acude a un psiquiatra, que propone extraer quirurgicamente la 2a personalidad e implantarsela a un señor que ha sufrido un accidente de coche. A partir de ahí se inicia una trama de suplantación, acción, dobles , thriller, esquizofrenia y realidad metafórica. The Lodgers (Bryan O'Malley, con Bii Miner, Charlotte Vega, Eugen Simon, David Bradley: A principios del siglo XX, en las afueras de un pueblo irlandes, dos jovenes hermanos mellizos de noble cuna viven en soledad en la decandente mansión de sus ancestros, condenados a repetir el destino malsano y trágico, en una casa que respira podredumbre y una amenazadora presencia sobrenatural. Dracula de Bram Stoker (Francis Ford Coppola, con Sirius Black, Hannibal Lecter, Neo, El Pirata Westley y la madre del crío abducido de Stranger Things): Pues eso, el Drácula de Bram Stoker, pero metiendo, un poco a martillazos, la trama romántica. Eso si, bonita es un rato.. (Y recordad que esta es nuestra muy parcial visión del festival, basada en las películas que pudimos ver en tres días, una pequeña muestra de Sitges 2017. Literary Associate, Rosie Kellagher, interviews well known playwrights whose work features in the year round programme at the Traverse. In this episode, Rosie Speaks to Matthew Zajac. Matthew is from Inverness. He studied Drama at Bristol University and has worked as an actor for 33 years. Theatre includes work at the Citizens Theatre Glasgow, Manchester Royal Exchange, Bristol Old Vic, Liverpool Everyman, Royal Lyceum Edinburgh, the Lyric Hammersmith, Bush Theatre and the Young Vic. Most recently, he played Bishop Gornik in the feature film The Crucifixion, directed by Xavier Gens and due for release in 2016. He directed Seven Ages (2001), The Seer (2006), ‘e Polish Quine (2007), Jacobite Country (2010), Sweetness (2011) and The Baroness (2013) for Dogstar and wrote and performed The Tailor of Inverness for the company, winning the 2009 Best Actor Award at the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland, a Scotsman Fringe First, the Holden Street Theatres Award and the Stage Award for Best Solo Performer at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe. The Tailor of Inverness went on to run for a month at the 2009 Adelaide Fringe Festival, winning nominations for Best Production and Best Performance. Some say the very best of avant-garde cinema comes from the land of escargot. Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Roger Vadim, and Jean Cocteau to just name a few. Even more recently with the French new wave horror films by Gaspar Noé, Pascal Laugier, Xavier Gens, Alexandre Bustillo, and Julien Maury. Now French director Romain Basset with a screenplay by Karim Chériguène presents a new French horror film entitled Horsehead. Though with a bizarre title and an esoteric approach, the film has drawn numerous folks to champion it. In this English language film, ex-UK patriots Jessica (played by French actress Lilly-Fleur Pointeaux) returns to her French home after the suicide of her grandmother. While there, she becomes sick with influenza and begins to have dreams both naturally as well as self induced about her grandmother who seems to be trying to let her know something from beyond the grave. Soon secrets about her past and her family begin to come into focus. Jessica wonders what is real as she starts seeing things that she should know nothing of. Having played numerous festival circuits, Horsehead began building both a word of mouth as well as a distribution base where it eventually appeared on VOD platforms. With visuals that hark back to films like The Cell and Jacob's Ladder, and a story that fits nicely along side the French new wave horror scene, it becomes apparent that multiple watches may bestow more secrets to the tale. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Back in 2012, Xavier Gens, the French filmmaker, well known for his controversial French language film, Frontiers, had released his very first English language film entitled The Divide, an apocalyptic film that in many ways felt a bit like the Frank Darabont film, The Mist. The Divide's setup was a group of folks land up in the basement of a high rise apartment building after what appears to be a nuclear blast. Soon, mistrust and group dynamics begin to rip the survivors apart where their worst enemy may actually be lurking from within. That film was a very dark movie that in many ways divided critics depending on their aptitude for the depressing and the malaise. The screenwriter was Karl Mueller who makes his directorial debut in the interesting 2014 film, Mr. Jones, both a found footage and documentary style horror film that in ways has the feel of a Lovecraftian tale. When a young couple head to the woods to make a nature documentary, they discover the home of the reclusive artist, Mr. Jones. Immediately they decide to drop the nature film and begin one on the notorious and mysterious sculptor. The film has been compared to the 2013 film Resolution which not surprisingly, like Mr. Jones, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. Also the remoteness of the location and the sculptures presented have made Mr. Jones be evaluated alongside The Blair Witch Project. But all in all the film is its own distinct creature and though the third act becomes quite surreal, the film is a must see for both horror and genre fans alike. In 2006, English director/screenwriter Simon Rumley became a sensation on the genre festival circuits with his film The Living and the Dead. Oddly folks weren’t quite sure where to categorize this amazing film. Having dramatic and literary elements yet dark and kinetic components, indy fans embraced the film and discovered a new and amazing talent within genre and horror circles. Simon Rumley is a director that seems to stand on the frontier between the dark dramas of Paul Schrader, Cormac McCarthy, and Martin Scorsese while relishing in the intensity of the films of Jee-woon Kim, Chan-wook Park, and Xavier Gens. In 2010, he released the film Red, White, and Blue, a story of three people who’s lives collide head on when their dark secrets come crashing down upon them. Horrific, disheartening, and violent, Red, White, and Blue remarks on issues ranging as wide as social disenfranchisement while presenting commentary on human nature and maybe even the Western world. Having run the festival circuits in 2010, Red, White, and Blue was released to a wide audience in 2011 and was named by many, including cohost Philip, as one of the top 10 best genre horror films of that year.
