On today's episode, I talk to writer and director Jim Mickle. Originally from Douglassville, PA, Jim studied film at NYU and then worked his way up in the industry, eventually deciding to make his own film in 2006, Mulberry Street, with frequent collaborator Nick Damici. Each film they made got a little more attention: Stake Land, We Are What We Are and Cold In July, which premiered at Sundance and was scooped up by IFC Films. From 2016 to 2018, Jim and Damici showran the Sundance TV show Hap and Leonard, and most recently, Jim has showrun three seasons of the Netflix Jeff Lemire adaptation Sweet Tooth, whose third season debuts today! Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streams Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Two people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Cold in July is a 2014 American independent crime thriller film directed by Jim Mickle, written by Mickle and Nick Damici, and starring Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard, and Don Johnson. The film takes place in 1980s Texas and is based on the novel Cold in July by author Joe R. Lansdale. Hall plays a man who kills a burglar, whose father (Shepard) subsequently seeks revenge. The plot is further complicated when a private investigator (Johnson) shows up. Beyond the Gates is a 2016 American horror film directed by Jackson Stewart and starring Barbara Crampton. It premiered on June 2, 2016, at the Los Angeles Film Festival where it won the audience award in the festival's midnight section.

Continuing our series of sub-genres of movies you're in the mood for, on this episode we're discussing sci-fi gems, science fiction films you might not have seen. Sci-fi has a legacy of movies that are interesting, unique, with overqualified casts, and out-there ideas that just get lost for whatever reason. Films discussed include Underwater, the Kirsten Stewart film (that I'll stand on the table for all day as a legitimately good movie), Captive State (Andor before Andor, a movie very few people saw but that has really inventive ideas), and In The Shadow of The Moon (a Netflix film that unfortunately disappeared into the crowd, by the great Jim Mickle, that is extremely original). I'd love to hear about your sci-fi gems. You can reach me at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram) or @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok).

On this episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast, I am chatting with Jeff Grace, composer on Netflix wonderful fantasy adventure series 'Sweet Tooth'.Based on the DC/Vertigo comic book, 'Sweet Tooth' is set ten years after “The Great Crumble”, an event that wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids — babies born part human, part animal. Unsure if hybrids are the cause or result of the virus, many humans fear and hunt them. After a decade of living safely in his secluded forest home, a sheltered hybrid deer-boy named Gus (Christian Convery) unexpectedly befriends a wandering loner named Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). Together they set out on an extraordinary adventure across what's left of America in search of answers — about Gus' origins, Jepperd's past, and the true meaning of home.Jeff Grace is an award-winning composer who has scored a multitude of films and tv series, a number of which have been collaborations with 'Sweet Tooth' showrunner Jim Mickle. They include the Sundance TV drama 'Hap and Leonard' which ran on Amazon in the UK, the Netflix film 'In the Shadow of the Moon', starring Boyd Holbrook and Michael C. Hall, the movies 'Cold In July', starring Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard and Don Jonson, and 'Night Moves', starring Jesse Eisenberg and Dakota Fanning. More recently Jeff has been scoring Facebook Watch series 'The Birch', and Tom Dolby's film 'The Artist's Wife' starring Lena Olin and Bruce Dern.In the interview, Jeff discusses his long collaboration with Jim Mickle, and how he came up with the unique hybrid sound of 'Sweet Tooth'. There are a number of spoilers in this interview, so I would strongly suggest you watch the series first before listening. The drama comes from Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey's Team Downey, and Netflix has recently revealed it has been watched by 60 million member households, placing it as the 6th most-watched English-language original series on the streaming service. Welcome back to the Nick Taylor Horror Show! As we put the literal horror show of 2020 behind us, I felt it was important to kick off this year with an episode about someone we lost last year, who left a tremendous void in the horror community, and that, of course, is Stuart Gordon.  To call Stuart a boundary pusher would be an understatement. Stuart taught entire generations of horror directors how not just to push boundaries but decimate them, and by doing so, show audiences the true power of horror. Stuart meant a lot of things to a lot of people, and one of the most recurring themes of conversations I've had with people about him is just how dedicated he was to mentorship and the craft of art.  I was fortunate enough to have conducted one of the last interviews with Stuart last year, and I highly recommend listening to that conversation if you haven't already. My conversation with Stuart was right after he had written his autobiography so he was extremely reflective and was incredibly generous with his wisdom, so check that episode out if you have not already. It's great, and I was pinching myself the entire time.   For this episode, I wanted to dig deeper into Stuart's prolific life by talking to some of those who were lucky enough to work with him. This episode features three separate conversations about Stuart with Brian Yuzna, Larry Fessenden, and Graham Skipper. Each person reflects on Stuart's life, his legacy, and what they learned from him, and I was really floored at how much insight came out of each of these conversations. Each interview turned out to be practical, revealing, and extremely fun. So, with that in mind, I hope you enjoy these three conversations about the life and work of one of our fallen masters of horror, Stuart Gordon. I'm going to start with perhaps Stuart's closest collaborator, Brian Yuzna.  Brian is a man who needs no introduction. A writer, director, producer, Brian Yuzna produced multiple movies that Stuart directed, including Reanimator, Dagon, From Beyond, and Dolls. Brian directed one of my personal favorite deep cuts, Society, which if you haven't seen, do yourself a favor and watch it, ideally with Joe Bob on Shudder. Brian also directed Bride of Reanimator, Silent Night Deadly Night 4, Beyond Reanimator, Return of the Living Dead 3, which is fucking insane and fantastic, and not enough people talk about it.  Brian and Stuart have a famous collaboration and, in partnership with each other were responsible for some quintessential horror classics. As a duo, they were unstoppable and I was very fortunate to be able to speak with Brian in-depth about their collaboration. Without further ado, please enjoy this conversation with Brian Yuzna. Larry Fessenden is an American director, producer, writer, and actor. Larry's career highlights include Habit, Wendigo, The Last Winter, and 2019's Depraved. I always love talking to Larry. As far as indie filmmakers, Larry is such the real deal, and I like to call him the East Coast Corman because he's not only a prolific director but he's mentored and groomed multiple directors like Ti West, Jen Wexler, and Jim Mickle. Larry and Stuart never actually got to work together on a film, but for years had a number of projects that they were developing. This conversation was mostly about what Stuart inspired in Larry as a filmmaker, as well as some details about the lost projects they were working on that unfortunately never came to be. Lots of great wisdom here. Please enjoy this reflection on Stuart Gordon with the great Larry Fessenden.  Graham Skipper is an American actor, director, and writer. He's directed multiple horror movies, including Space Clown and Sequence Break, now streaming on Shudder. He also reprised the role of Doctor Herbert West in Re-Animator: The Musical and starred in multiple Joe Begos movies, including Almost Human and The Mind's Eye. Graham worked very closely with Stuart on Reanimator the Musical and was lucky enough to have developed a close relationship with him. There are multiple wonderful lessons Graham learned from Stuart, and he was gracious enough to share them with me - so please enjoy this conversation with Graham Skipper. Thanks again for listening!   ----- Produced by Simpler Media

Today in Aggett's book club IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON gets the spotlight! In the shadow of the Moon is a 2020 Netflix movie directed by Jim Mickle and written by Gregory Weidman and Geoffrey Tock. This is the tag - A Philadelphia police officer struggles with a lifelong obsession to track down a mysterious serial killer whose crimes defy explanation. Immediately the trailer intrigued me with its darkened style and police chases and action. I have been longing for something to look and feel the outstanding Se7en for a long long time. This, I think, had slight similarities in style, at times. As I got into the film I began trying to figure out where I knew the characters from and it surprised me to realise that... one of them was Dexter! ANNNND I have only watched one episode of it. Can I hear the booos through the medium of blog?! Perhaps. Anyway, the cast is well-fitting. Boyd Holbrook plays a Philly Police officer named Locke. I like this character. After a run-in with a strange and mysterious woman, post some very strange deaths! tragedy strikes his life. What unfoldes is the spiralling detective Locke dedicating his entire life (quite literally) in the search of this woman that only appears in a certain pattern. That woman is Cleopatra Coleman, she plays Rya. The mysterious one. It is a classically styled cop thriller in a damp and dark city until Locke begins to track down this woman while he neglects his family in the process. Then I can only describe him looking like Ron Burgandy when the news team was dispanded. Despite the way he gets to look throughout the film Boyd Holbrook played the lead character very well and this polished film left me wanting more. I do think that perhaps they could have made more out of the big twist... that I DIDNT SEE COMING! Which I won't mention any more of. To round up this scrappy review. I expected a gritty cop detective thriller, I got something slightly different and was pleasantly surprised. It is like digging into your winter jacket pocket to find something and accidentally finding some cash instead. #Win So this film pleased me despite its occasional slow-building moments. I give this movie 7 zombie heads out of 10! It is on our website blog that you can read here and see the trailer. Larry Fessenden is an American director, producer, writer, actor, and overall force to be reckoned with. A true indie film pioneer in the horror world, Larry's career highlights include 1995's gritty vampire drama, Habit, 2001's Wendigo, and The Last Winter, Starring Ron Perelman. Larry's latest movie, Depraved, is a gritty and modern take on Frankenstein with a number of interesting questions posed about the ethics of scientific advancements in medicine. Larry is also a very accomplished producer, but beyond that, Larry is one of those rare gentle mentors in the industry, who really goes to great lengths to give new directors a start. Quite a few notable directors have bloomed under Larry's guidance including Jim Mickle and Ti West. Today, his company Glass Eye Pics continues to put out uniquely voiced genre films that rock the independent horror world to its core. Larry is a fellow native born New Yorker and I really had a wonderful time speaking to him. Here's a summary of key advice from this conversation with Larry Fessenden: Find a cast & crew who are in it for the passion. When making indepenent films, the pay is low, and the hours are grueling, therefore, it's critical that you find people who want to be in your movie for the right reasons. The right reasons being the desire & drive to create. The people you want to work with will be more concerned about the project and their creative contributions and less concerned about their contracts, hours, and overtime. That being said, the other side of this is that you cannot abuse or take advantage of them, whatsoever. As an indie director, you have to hold up your end of the bargain by ensuring that your cast and crew is always respected, safe and listened to. All of these elements are what make a creative and cohesive family unit on set. The spirit of independent filmmaking thrives on perseverance, not just from the director but from everyone around him. Find people who will willingly remain in the trenches with you and treat them like gold.   Follow the Punk Rock ethos of filmmaking. As Larry says, work outside the system if the system won't have you. This is largely why he embraced the DIY (do it yourself) ethos of punk rock when he produced his films. This stresses the importance of working outside of the system and not constantly waiting around for someone to give you clearance and permission but creatively finding a way to get the shots yourself with what you have access to. Which brings me to my next point.   Embrace the challenge. Larry mentioned how the fun of making independent movies is finding a way to get the shots without the resources. Again, this speaks to how important the quality of resourcefulness is in directors and filmmakers. This partially requires taking a mental inventory of everything you have access to whenever you face a production challenge. Larry mentioned how on one movie he needed a crane shot that he couldn't afford but remembered that he had a neighbor with a cherrypicker, so he got the shot that way. Nearly everyone has unexpected advantages and access to unique resources, discover what yours are and structure your script around them.   Face your fears. Larry is noted for saying that horror is the only genre that unflinchingly faces reality; it's been widely documented that trendy horror genres throughout the years are effective because they serve as metaphors for current anxieties (Godzilla came from the fear of the atomic age, torture porn rose during a culture of disgust over military mistreatment of foreign POWs, etc, etc. The level of unflinching honesty that horror directors are able to achieve when confronting real fears and social anxieties is one of the reasons why horror matters so much as a genre. Larry's advice is to really confront and face your own fears and sources of unrest, and to channel them into your work. The more honest you are about what scares you, the more your work will resonate with people on a gut level and the more effective the horror element will be. As Larry says, "denial is dangerous,” the horror genre is there to not only entertain us, but remind us of reality and hard truths.    ----- Produced by Simpler Media

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. There is a lot of screenwriter and director duos in genre cinema. Some that come to mind are Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard or Jim Mickle and Nick Damici. But another duo actually do it a bit differently. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead direct films together, while Benson writes and Moorhead does cinematography. In 2012, after the movie played the festival circuit, their debut film Resolution received fairly good reviews and became somewhat of a cult film. Now they are back with their new film, Spring, which again received fairly good reviews from critics. Back in the states, Evan's life has spiraled out of control. His mom passes away from a horrible disease and in the aftermath he gets in a bar fight that leaves him pursued by both gangbangers and the police. On a whim he randomly heads to Italy and meets a beautiful and mysterious girl named Louise. After a number of peculiar meetings, the two begin to spend a lot of time together where Evan begins to fall in love. And soon Evan begins to find out things about Louise that just may not be right. Dark Discussions (which interviewed the film makers when they released Resolution) give their thoughts on Spring, try to determine which subgenre the film falls under, and figure to resolve where Benson and Moorhead are headed as film makers. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Ed Sanchez, one of the co-director's of The Blair Witch Project, has been quite prolific since that ridiculously huge indy hit. Though he hasn't gotten a wide release of his films since, he has directed a number of gems including Altered, Lovely Molly (which Dark Discussions states was the second best film of 2012), and a segment of V/H/S 2. Each was either written or co-written by Jamie Nash. As with Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett or Jim Mickle and Nick Damici, the two seem to be a pretty dang good team. Their new film, 2014's Exists, is actually the third film this year about a sasquatch, or better known as Bigfoot. Shot in the found footage style, the film is about a group of five young adults that head out in that oh so common cabin in the woods for fun and sun. But one of them brought a bunch of cameras along since the area of Texas they are in is known as a sighting of the mysterious and legendary monster. With a quick setup, a short intro, and some spooky music by composer Nima Fakhrara, the film becomes a nonstop ride that doesn't let up until the very end. Dark Discussions is joined by Kristi Petersen Schoonover, author of Bad Apple and Skeletons in the Swimmin' Hole, to discuss this new film by the duo. Is it better than the prior two Bigfoot films from this year? Is it more than that and actually a top genre/horror film of the year? Your co-hosts discuss the movie and where it stands up against other Bigfoot films as well as genre cinema as a whole. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. As we did for last year, this year Dark Discussions is discussing some of the top genre films that your co-hosts are looking forward to seeing in 2014. Horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, techno-thriller, mystery. You name it, it's coming. Last year looked like it was going to be one hell of a year but by some it turned out otherwise. Yet this year, once again, filmmakers everywhere are whetting the chops of genre fans throughout the world. For those so inclined, here is the short list of what we discuss in the episode. Kevin Smith's Tusk, Eli Roth's Green Inferno, Oliver Blackburn's Random, Ti West's Sacrament, Simon Rumley's The Last Word, and the Joe R. Lansdale penned and Jim Mickle directed Cold in July. Other horror films include Willow Creek, Devil's Due, The Jungle, Hellions, Occulus, All Cheerleaders Die, Scorned, Nothing Bad Can Happen, The Loft, Faults, and Afflicted. Some bigger films spoken of include Joe Hill's Horns, Guardians of the Galaxy, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, Deliver Us From Evil, and the Scarlett Johansson's film, Under the Skin. Many remakes or sequels discussed include The Town that Dreaded Sundown, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Poltergeist, The Purge 2, Rec 4: Apocalypse, Wolf Creek 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Robocop, Dead Snow: Red Vs. Dead, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. But we discuss a few more films including co-host Mike and Eric's opinion on the new Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones which was just released. Plus other films that may be low profile that seem interesting are Joon-ho Bong's Snowpiercer, Sinbad the 5th Voyage, I Frankenstein, the Lance Henricksen film Harbinger Down, Pompeii, Edge of Tomorrow, Big Bad Wolves, Nights of Badassdum, the thriller simply titled +1, and the dark thriller Nurse 3-D (among others). So come and listen to what your hosts think of the new year and whether it will live up to the hype.
