In this episode of Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa, the 15th Doctor, and his new companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, embark on a mysterious journey in Wales. Showrunner Russell T Davies has crafted a gripping narrative that begins with the TARDIS materializing on the Welsh coast. With all of the romance, lust, mystery, and occasional danger folded into nearly every mermaid tale, it’s somewhat easy to explain our fixation on these characters. But where the stories ensnare us all is in how one-dimensional they can be, especially when it comes to surface level mermaid archetypes, which are often full of hyper-sexualization, body image expectations, and heteronormative gender roles. Dive in with us past the surface level narratives we’ve learned about merfolk, and explore deeper waters.Featured in this Episode:Gabriel Rivera / Nymphia the Nautilus MermaidInstagram: @nautilusseanymphTikTok: @nautilusseanymphFacebook: Nymphia: The Nautilus Mermaid Benjamin RadfordWebsite: www.benjaminradford.comPodcast: Squaring the Strange Episode 143: Merfolk, Merfact, MerfictionArticle: Live Science - Mermaids & Mermen: Facts & LegendsOak HoneyTikTok: @oakhoneyInstagram: @oakhoneyyAbout Our Sponsor:Janji aims to explore, connect, and give back by crafting comfortable, responsibly-produced running apparel guided by the places we run and the people we meet.Get 15% off your next order of Janji with code SEXOUTSIDE at checkoutAdditional Resources:Medium - The History of Mermaids Isn’t What You Think It IsPerforming Humanity - Mermaids & Sirens: Women’s Relationship with Water from Myth to Renaissance About the Siren TV seriesMerNetworkMermaids - supporting transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children, young people, and their families since 1995.Let’s be friends:We want you to be a part of the Sex Outside community!Find Sex Outside on Instagram! @sexoutsidepodConnect with us on TikTok: @sexoutsidepodCheck out what we’ve saved for you on PinterestWant to support Sex Outside?Leave a 5-star review in Apple Podcasts or the app of your choosing!Head to the Sex Outside Shop to find stickers, shirts, and underwear!Need a transcript for this episode? Be sure to let us know what you think of it, but we also have two new guests on this episode with Joe Wilson and Neil Rivera! You might not expect some of the franchises that come up, so prepare to be surprised! But first, in our Whatcha Playin segment, Joe talks about his time with Persona 4 Golden & Final Fantasy VII Remake, Neil talks about his time with Final Fantasy VII Remake, Fortnite, and The Medium, while Emmett talks about his time with Persona 5 Royal and Alan Wake. What's Up, Playa? Welcome back to the show! Emmett Watkins Jr, Allan Muir, Josh Miller, and Graydon Webb are all here to go head to head over the best games of 2020...again! We have 15 total categories, but we'll only decide the next 7 in this episode (because 3.5 hours is long enough!) Each category, much like Giant Bomb's awards, gets one overall winner and two runners up. This episode's categories are: Best Online Game Best On The Go Game Best Narrative (Sponsored by The Last of Us Part II) Best Non-Violent Game Games That Couldn’t Quite Stick The Landing (Sponsored by Cyberpunk 2077) God Bless This Mess Zeitgeist of the Year We have one more Game of the Year episode for you, and it'll be way shorter than the last two, thankfully. It'll be just our discussion of the ultimate Game of the Year, which will be a ranked list of ten games rather than just 3 games. Look out for that one same time next week! Here we find the Kojima in his natural habitat. Jay and Gary rise up from the unfortunate ashes of a deleted episode to re-record some conversation on Playstation Vita support, Kojima leaving Konami, and Kojima not leaving Konami. Game talk includes Life is Strange Episode 5, Until Dawn, Tales from the Borderlands, Tearaway, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Destiny: The Taken King. Our lovely hand-crafted round table selection for this episode includes the TV shows Danger 5 and House of Cards, the horror movie Student Bodies, and the mere concept of owning a Playstation Vita. A grand catchup continues as we clear the track from a busy summer. We're getting slowly back to normalcy with these shows, and there's a few games that we need to get off our chests. Donald and Austen open New Business by tag teaming Lost Dimensions, the Vita (and PS3, but really...) strategy RPG that crosses betrayal, strategy and a stupid amount of DLC. After a double shot of bird watching with Hatoful Boyfriend and Badlands: GOTY Edition, it's time for Donald to stare down the beginnings of his favorite game of all time in Earthbound Beginnings. To say the least, it hasn't aged well. Stephen continues the retro kick with Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards before diving into the world of children's card games actually marketed to children by playing Pokemon TCG Online. Austen finishes with a GameFreak title of his own in Tembo the Badass Elephant before dealing with a couple of adventure games in Life is Strange Episode 4 (SPOILERS from 50 minutes to about 56 minutes) and episode one of the 2015-16 King's Quest titles. How many cheap deaths did Austen find? Tune in to find out.Whatcha Watchin' was scrapped due to games, but that gave us time to address Listener Mail in which we tackle the question of choice as multiplatform owners. (Well, most of us.) After that, it's another News Roundup covering game updates, Dragon Quest, Nintendo's financial, and the introduction of Democracy to the anarchy of PlayStation Plus. Finally, the Mushrooms include a Keiji Infaune takedown, getting stuck in Ohio, and late breaking news that the Final Fantasy XII remaster was actually born (in PITTSBURGH, of all places!)The goal is to be caught up on shows by Labor Day or thereabouts, but drop us an email as we try to return to Famicast parity, Tweet us @nfrpodcast or comment below! The podcast was recorded August 1 and edited by Donald Theriault. All music used under fair use provisions.
