Ask The Tech Coach: A Podcast For Instructional Technology Coaches and EdTech Specialists
Are you looking forward to a new school year but it is just too early to bring new teachers into the building for training? Learn how to make the best PD decisions today! In this episode of “https://www.teachercast.net/episodes/ask-the-tech-coach/ (Ask the Tech Coach),” Jeff and Susan discuss a variety of ways that school districts can be successful onboarding new teachers before the school gets started! Whether it is physical or virtual, introduce yourself as the coach/trainer via video and send it out prior so they have a name, face, and voice to put together to make them feel more at ease. Physical Training Acknowledge the various levels of background knowledge of the teachers coming in. Think about a self-paced checklist for them to complete where you are not lecturing but having them complete a checklist for proof of knowledge and you are available to answer questions. We call ours “Getting to Know Tech at CASS” - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BEPiEkVFcEigx9ImY8HTC3H3AMu47FoG/view?usp=sharing (SAMPLE) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jzc-j-4w9M7D2BP3ZKKTBObYjjyKtbGi/view?usp=sharing (SAMPLE) of a Technology Orientation Page Virtual Training The checklist idea from physical training can definitely be incorporated here. Utilize video. Get yourself an online video presence. Training does not always have to be synchronous. All of those questions you get all of the time, make them into quick tutorial videos for your teachers to access anywhere/anytime. Ask The Tech Coach: A Podcast For Instructional Technology Coaches and EdTech Specialists
In this episode of “https://www.teachercast.net/episodes/ask-the-tech-coach/ (Ask the Tech Coach),” Jeff and Susan talk about evaluating tech tools, things to consider, and working with administrators on purchasing needed technology for physical and virtual classrooms. How to Score Your First Tech Coach PositionGetting Qualified for the Interview What makes you qualified to become a Tech Coach?Reflect upon and own your strengths; don’t be afraid to tout your knowledge with back information of how your knowledge can help others. Remember just because you are a “tech geek”, it doesn’t always make you a good tech coach. A good tech coach needs to be able to talk the tech talk, but also talk the talk at the level of the teacher/user/beginner, etc. Are EdTech Badges necessary? Should you look to get out of the classroom?Reflection - Know your WHY! Why are you really wanting a position like this, make sure you have motivation driving you and not burn out or frustration driving you away from something else! At what age are you qualified to begin teaching adults? Writing Your Resume What does a Tech Coach resume look like? How do you condense into a single page that usually takes up a ton of space? Preparing for the Interview What do you bring with you? Do you need a Tech Coach resume website? How to do your homework on each school district. Nailing the Job How to prepare for your first Tech Coach job interview? What should you focus on? What should you not focus on? How To Help Your District Purchase EdTechHave meaningful discussions with your administratorsDiscuss the Why and the How in addition to the Who What is your purpose for purchasing this? Test Drive the Free DemosMany demos are still available through June. Give them a try and see what works best for your school and teachers. Make Friends with the Companies on Social MediaThese relationships offer many benefits to pilot new features and in many cases discounts and benefits of their ambassador programs. Discuss training and implementation of new applications (both physically and virtually)Think about all the different ways training should take place for different learning styles and needs for the time. Video tutorial, written instructional guides, face to face presentations Ask the question: “Should you be bringing in new tools”Is this a top down tool or a bottom up tool? Purpose is huge here. Don’t purchase a tool because it is the “trendy” thing to do. Fully evaluate how it will benefit your teachers efficiency. In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, we speak with authors Matthew R Kay and Shawna Coppola about race relations in today's classrooms and how school districts, teachers, and students can sit down and have positive and constructive conversations on the topic. https://www.teachercast.net/product/1625310986/US/teach00-20/?cart=y ()In this episode, we discuss: How to recognize the difference between meaningful and inconsequential race conversations. The TechEducator Podcast – The TeacherCast Educational Network
In this episode of the TechEducator Podcast (https://www.teachercast.net/tep) , we discuss how Social Media can be used as a positive thing in the classroom environment. In this episode, we discuss: Google I/O ConferenceNew Google Assistant can make phone calls for you New Gmail Features Is this the end of the world? Social Media in the ClassroomBest Practices for Social Media Account Creation 11 Tips for Social Media Success by Sam PattersonOnce a day, share something specific. Take a close up picture of one kid’s work, get their hands in there. Don’t engage the current debateThat new thing everybody is ranting about? Ignore it, it isn’t important. The debate is more energy than it is worth. Follow widely unfollow freelyIf you are a teacher, follow teachers. If you are running a classroom account, follow classroom accounts. Unfollow at the first sign of trouble. Never feel guilty about unfollowing. Don’t show your students the raw feed unless you have a good reason. Expect your kids and parents to read your feed They won’t read all your posts, but they will see every mistake you make. Make the right ones. Lift up someone else’s workShare the work of the teachers and classrooms you follow. This is an easy way to stay active and share positive. Ask questions If you see a project you like, ask a question. People love to answer questions about what they shared. Everybody learns from good questions. Chats aren’t required People can get really excited about Twitter chats, you don’t have to. They can be overwhelming and they are not for everyone. Turn notifications off Seriously, evil corporations are reshaping your brain’s chemistry through notifications. I am not kidding, turn that crap off. Use threads to tie together a group of examples Post a “Title tweet” that has the name of the assignment and then “thread” the rest of the examples as replies. Interact with those who feed your practice. If you find someone’s tweet useful or inspiring, tell them. Don’t just RT it, say “thanks” it matters. Never forget these platforms were built to monetize outrage and disagreement, don’t make money for them. We left 3 important points off of this list. . . . . What are they? In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, we discuss Augmented Reality with Metaverse CEO, Dmitry Shapiro. Together, we explore how Augmented Reality is being used in and out of the classrooms and learn where this amazing technology will be taking us as we head into the future. Follow our PodcastThe TeacherCast Educational Broadcasting Network | http://www.twitter.com/teachercast (@TeacherCast) Follow our HostJeff Bradbury | http://www.twitter.com/jeffbradbury (@JeffBradbury) About our GuestDmitry Shapiro is CEO and Co-Founder of GoMeta (Metaverse), an augmented reality platform. The Metaverse AR platform makes it easy for non-techies to create augmented reality. While it has applications across many industries, K-12 teachers were the first to embrace Metaverse, and it is being used in thousands of classrooms across the world. About Metaversehttp://gometa.io/ (Metaverse) is an Augmented Reality platform that makes it easy for teachers and students to create amazing interactive experiences without having to code. Thousands of teachers are building all kinds of interactive curriculum, including educational games, stories, puzzles, challenges, scavenger hunts, and https://medium.com/@Metaverseapp/you-can-create-magic-in-the-classroom-951d068f365c (more). The most popular thing teachers are building are Breakout EDU-style challenges in Augmented Reality. Breakout Experiences can be built in under 15 minutes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkCXRQndkgg&t (Here's a tutorial)). Not only have teachers been building Metaverse Experiences for their students, they are having students build experiences themselves. Metaverse is great at teaching the logic behind computer programming, allowing students to build things they can see, use, and play with immediately. This past week, Google Slides released some pretty amazing updates that are certainly going to be helpful for both teachers and tech coaches. On this episode of the TechEducator Podcast (https://www.teachercast.net/tep) , we take a look at these new features and how they can be used in your classroom. Please join us LIVE every Tuesday night for the TeacherCast.tv (http://TeacherCast.tv) and join in our live interactive chat box. How can we use the following new features?Grid ViewGrid view allows users to see all of your slides in a multi-row, multi-column grid. This feature revolves nicely around another new feature where you can now mute slides so they don't appear in your final presentation. Let's face it, when your slides are on the left side of the screen, you only see a handful at a time. With your slides in a grid, you can quickly see more of them to rearrange and edit quicker. Linking SlidesMany of us teach a class or subject that is also taught by another set of teachers. Or, perhaps a school leader is creating slides for a parent presentation and they want their school building leaders to embed that presentation on to THEIR slide decks. With a new slide-linking feature, users can create a set of slides and copy/paste them into another slide deck. When you hit the paste button, the new deck will give you an option to copy as is, or link the slides. When slides are linked, they act as one single slide. If you adjust one slide, the other deck gets adjusted as well. This is a game changer for anyone doing PD on a topic but uses that same set of slides for multiple presentations. Timelines, Graphs, ChartsI recently had a horrible experience where a math teacher told me (several times) that Google and Math just do not work well together. This same teacher came up to me recently with a smile on their face and told me that the new ability to add and manipulate charts and graphs on their slides was a total game changer. To add a chart, simply go to the Insert menu and insert one of several beautifully designed templates onto your slide. On this episode of the TechEducator Podcast (https://www.teachercast.net/tep) , we reflect on a recent workshop that I attended that focused on best practices for providing professional development sessions to adults. Many of us have experience getting up in front of students every day and know how to create a dynamic lesson in our classrooms, but do we really know how to present to adults in a way that allows them to walk away feeling good about a multi-hour workshop? In this episode, we tackle several strategies for creating a seamless presentation with helpful resources for an audience of all backgrounds. In this episode of the TechEducator Podcast (https://www.teachercast.net/tep) , we discuss how any teacher, no matter what subject or grade level can bring robotics into their curriculum. Our guests tonight are from Microbric, the creators of the Edison Robots and from Sphero, the creators of the Sphero and BB-8 Robot. Topics DiscussedRobots make abstract concepts concrete Robots outside of STEM classes The power of multiple robots About Sphero (https://www.teachercast.net/product/B06ZZGWG85/US/teach00-20/?cart=y) Sphero began the connected play revolution in 2010 by creating something unlike anything – and we never stopped. We fuse robotic and digital technology into immersive entertainment experiences that ignite imagination and defy expectation. Optimized by data and powered by fun, these ever-evolving experiences are changing the way the world thinks about play. The wildly successful Kickstarter campaign hit 524% funding and the popularity of Edison has only grown from there. The highly versatile and easy-to-use robot is now distributed globally and can be found in schools in more than 50 countries around the world. Microbric’s vision for the Edison robot is to create an affordable, comprehensive STEM teaching resource for coding and robotics education for students in years 3 – 9. To support this vision, users of Edison have access to free educational resources and programming apps. The Edison robot can be programmed multiple ways: using pre-set barcodes, EdWare, EdPy and now, EdBlocks. EdBlocks, the newest programming language for Edison robots, is a fully icon-based language that is super easy to use. A drag-and-drop block-based system, EdBlocks is intuitive and fun, even for younger users. Perfect for introducing anyone to programming, EdBlocks is ideal for students aged 8 to 12 years old. Students can then take their programming further with EdWare, a hybrid graphical language, and EdPy, a highly versatile text-based programming language based on Python. Best of all? Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar "Building Efficiency with Google Forms" with special guest presenter, Jenn Judkins, August 19, 2017. There are so many awesome things we can do with Google Forms in our classrooms, and we are really excited to have Jennifer Judkins, a Google guru, joining us as our special guest presenter for this webinar to share some possibilities you may not have realized. Webinar description: Learn how to reduce inefficient, paper-based workflows using Google Forms and Add-Ons so more time can be spent doing value-added work with kids. In this session, we will highlight the use of the formMule and formRanger Add-Ons by creating a basic discipline referral system. In the example workflow we will demonstrate how teachers can use Google Forms to report student behavior issues, which will then trigger automatic email notification to school administrators. After the administrators follow up on the reported incident, Google Forms can ensure teachers are kept in the loop about any consequences through by automatic email update sent to the referring staff member. Jennifer Judkins is the Director of Educational Technology for Lexington Public Schools in Massachusetts. She is an experienced middle and high school science teacher, and former life science researcher, who knows first-hand how technology can extend learning and engage students in ways that challenge them to higher levels of thinking.
