How the devil are you lovely Bookshelvers?!The dust has now settled after another fabulous DOGX and with Nat away on her holidays and corrin run off her feet it falls to Steve to host this episode SOLO (what could go wrong?). Luckily Nat and Corrin were around when we interviewed the wonderful, awesome, trail blazing human that is Gwen Bailey about her book The Perfect Puppy. We discuss her journey in dog training, the evolution of her book 'The Perfect Puppy', and the changes in training techniques over the years. She reflects on her experiences in kennels, the importance of communication with dog owners, and the impact of her work on the dog training landscape. The team and Gwen also delve into the complexities of dog training, discussing the challenges of reaching puppy owners, the impact of educational resources like books as well as the flexibility of training curriculums, and the significance of consent-based handling. We sing from the rafters about the importance of collaboration among training organisations and explore the fundamental qualities that make a good dog trainer. On top of all that we have a segment of interviews Steve did running around at lunch time at DOGX (where he mentions potatoes at least 500 times). Enjoy!Gwen Facts:Gwen worked for a leading UK national animal welfare charity from 1988-2002 and pioneered the use of dog behaviour knowledge in the rehoming of unwanted animals. She was the first person to be appointed by a national animal welfare charity as a full time Animal Behaviourist, eventually heading a team of behaviourists.Gwen has successfully solved behaviour problems in thousands of rehomed dogs, helping to prevent dogs with behavioural problems being passed from home to home and improving the rehoming success rate.Gwen has lectured at national and international conferences, run training courses for staff at animal charities around the world and has written many books & education leaflets. She is a past Chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and a past Trustee for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.In 2003, Gwen founded and now runs Puppy School, a large network of professionally-trained puppy tutors which is a Practitioner Member of the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. Puppy School tutors have collectively helped to have a positive training impact on more than 100,000 puppies and their owners, and continue to run excellent classes around the country. Family Medicine and the Counterculture Revolution for our TimesPresented by Kevin Grumbach, MD, University of California, San FranciscoSTFM Annual Conference 2024 Blanchard Lecture | Monday, May 6, 2024 Family medicine was forged in the crucible of social movements of the 1960s. The consequential issues of our times—climate change, systemic racism, inequality of wealth, gun violence, reproductive rights, among others—are all contests for the common good that require social movements to achieve systemic reform. Primary care, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, is also a common good. Is family medicine ready to tap its brash, founding energy to reignite a second counterculture revolution to challenge profits, power, and privilege that harm society's collective wellbeing? This presentation will address the essential ingredients of a counterculture revolution, including daring to be radical and not settling for incrementalism; speaking truth to power; identifying and dismantling structures that reinforce the status quo; democratizing alliances; and acknowledging one's own complicity in harmful systems. If the speaker and audience do not feel uncomfortable at some point during the session, then the presentation will not have achieved its objectives.Learning Objectives: At the end of the session each participant should...To recognize the roots of family medicine as a countercultural specialtyTo be able to characterize primary care as a common goodTo identify the key elements of a counterculture revolutionTo incorporate revolutionary acts into one's professional life while being able to continue to earn a livelihood in family medicinePresentation SlidesCopyright © Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, 2024Kevin Grumbach, MD: Kevin Grumbach, MD is Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. As Maine prepares for elections next week, Rebecca sits down with, current Deputy Director of the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council and former 2020 Director of Elections for the State of Georgia, Chris Harvey, to discuss the increasingly hostile environment for those delivering democracy in our towns and cities. Chris and Rebecca discuss the tendency for municipal officials to develop “thick skins” over years of fielding with public complaints, and how it might be time to set aside their hardiness to encourage reporting of threats. The discussion also touches on the ways law enforcement and clerks would benefit from understanding each other's thankless tasks better. At MMA's annual convention, Neal grabs an interview from newly minted Deputy Town Clerk, Gillian Gaddis of Cutler, who talks about the gravity of her new role and the amount of training and diligence required to conduct an election. Neal also sits down with Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows to discuss Maine's mechanisms for reporting election harassment and interference for officials.LD 1821 -An Act To Protect Public Election Officials, became law on August 8, 2022.Episode Guide:1:40 - Gillian Gaddis, Election Clerk, Cutler- https://www.cutlermaine.net/ 5:30 – Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows - https://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/index.html13:20 – Deputy Director, Chris Harvey, Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council, https://www.gapost.org/ Every town and city needs citizens like you to help administer the election. On this episode, the guys speak with long time law enforcement professional, Chris Harvey of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, about his unique experiences as the former Elections Director of the Georgia Secretary of State's Office. Chris explains the path he took to effectively serve in a position that put him in the middle the electoral process that helped to determine the winner of one of the most contentious presidential elections in our nation's history. He also discusses how misinformation and falsehoods regarding the electoral process, often peddled by the candidates and their proxies, can undermine safe and fair elections for everyone that participates in one of the founding principles of a free and democratic society. Similar to many of the falsehoods and conspiracy theories that surround policing, the U.S. electoral process may also be receiving an unfair assessment by those that broker in division.

In this episode I'm joined by my wonderful colleague Dr Hannah Donovan a veterinary surgeon and a certificated clinical animal behaviourist (CCAB) for equines, dogs and cats. Hannah talks to me about her journey to becoming a vet and behaviourist and how horse owners, vets and behaviourists are coming together to share modern understanding of horse behaviour. Hannah and I share some tips for horse guardians about how they can better prepare for vet visits and procedures and when you need to seek the help of a behaviourist with your horse. Dr Hannah Donovan graduated with a 2.1 Bachelor of Science Honours degree (BSc (Hons)) in Animal Science from the University of Leeds, UK, in 2006. She then went on to study for her veterinary degree, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVM&S) at the University of Edinburgh, UK, and qualified as a vet in 2011. During her time at the University of Edinburgh, Hannah also obtained a Masters of Veterinary Science in Canine Behaviour Research (MVetSci). She then worked as a mixed vet in Lincolnshire and during this time, completed a Master of Science in Clinical Animal Behaviour (MSc) at the University of Lincoln, UK, she graduated with distinction in 2013. Since then, Hannah has worked in small animal practices in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, she has also travelled and volunteered around the world in clinics and shelters, and spent some time working in a large RSPCA hospital and shelter in Sydney, Australia. Hannah has worked as a veterinary surgeon since 2011 and has been seeing behaviour referrals simultaneously since 2013. Hannah has enjoyed providing continued education for vets and vet staff around the world about animal behaviour and how to improve handling and understanding during veterinary visits, rehabilitation of rescued animals or teaching young animals and preventing behaviour issues. Hannah's aim has always been to improve animals' quality of life and welfare by continually learning herself and teaching owners, trainers, veterinary and shelter staff. Hannah now sees veterinary-referred behavioural cases all over the world, thanks to the development in virtual consultations in the last 18 months. Hannah is an RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) Advanced Practitioner in Companion Animal Behaviour, an ASAB (the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour) accredited Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) for Dogs, Cats and Equines, an ABTC (Animal Behaviour and Training Council) registered Clinical Animal Behaviourist and registered Veterinary Behaviourist, a Full Member of the APBC (Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors), a Director and Certificated Member of the FAB Clinicians (Fellowship of Animal Behaviour Clinicians) and a Committee Member of the BVBA (British Veterinary Behaviour Association). This week, the Executive Council rejected $27 million dollars in federal funding for COVID vaccination efforts. Police removed several protestors from that meeting. These vaccination contracts sparked a disruptive protest that shut down an Executive Council meeting two weeks ago. Wednesday's meeting was held at the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council, but there were still nine protesters who were arrested by police. The U.S. is in the process of resettling thousands of Afghan evacuees. Some of them will be coming to New Hampshire. And the state's housing crisis continues. An agency responsible for coordinating the arrival of Afghan evacuees to the Concord area is struggling to find them places to live. The rental and housing crunch in New Hampshire is a longstanding issue, and it's only gotten worse in the last few years. And a new study says the state's rising housing costs can in part be blamed on local residential regulations.

Earlier this year the New Hampshire Senate unanimously passed SB 114, a bill to require law enforcement officers to complete training on de-escalation, ethics, implicit bias, and cultural diversity. The bill mirrors action from the Police Standards and Training Council to voluntarily add this training. Now that SB 114 is in the House of Representatives, some legislators argue a state law is unnecessary.

Four years after quarterback Colin Kaepernick first took a knee during the national anthem, and three months after the killing of George Floyd, sports are at the forefront of the national conversation about racism and police brutality, and athletes at all levels are using their voices to try and affect change. But even after decades of activism in sports, many athletes are told to “stick to the game,” and stay out of politics. Doug Glanville, knows that’s not possible. And he thinks sports - at their best - can provide a kind of blueprint for what better politics might look like. Glanville is a former Major League Baseball player, and has been an analyst for a variety of networks and publications. He’s the author of a book, “The Game From Where I Stand” and teaches at UConn. He’s also a member of the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council, and has been active in police reform efforts in the state after a widely-publicized incident where he was racially profiled in his own driveway. He joined John this week for a special live Zoom event for the Connecticut Mirror called “Race, Politics and Sports.” For a full transcript of this interview, go to steadyhabits.org.
