In this episode, I interview Professor Natalia Telepneva. She is a Lecturer in International History at the University of Strathclyde. Her specialty is the Cold War-era Soviet Union and socialism, with a specific focus on Africa. And today we will discuss her first book, "Cold War Liberation: The Soviet Union and the Collapse of the Portuguese Empire in Africa, 1961-1975," in which she details the roles of Soviet and even Czechoslovak bureaucrats and spies in the anti-colonialist wars in Portugal's African colonies of Guinea-Bissau, Angola, and Mozambique. We will talk about what connected the Soviet Union with the local independence movements, how the Communist Soviet government supported Marxism-inspired leaders in Portuguese Africa, and how the anti-colonial wars played out. You may download Professor Telepneva's book as a free e-book at this link. The BRICS countries are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This year, China is the host nation of the annual BRICS Summit, and senior officials of the five countries have convened in recent months to prepare for the major event.Officials and experts said this year's summit is expected to boost unity and concerted actions among emerging markets and developing countries at a time when the world faces multiple challenges. In his video address, Xi noted that the impacts of major changes and a pandemic unseen in a century are being combined, and factors of instability, uncertainty and insecurity are increasing in the global situation.Peace and development remain the theme of the times, the aspiration of people across countries for a better life remains unchanged, and the historic mission for the international community to pursue solidarity and win-win cooperation remains unchanged, he said.Speaking on security, Xi mentioned the Global Security Initiative he put forward at the opening of the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia around a month ago, and said that both history and reality tell us that seeking one's own security at the expense of others will only create new tensions and risks.BRICS countries need to strengthen political mutual trust and security cooperation, maintain close communication and coordination on major international and regional issues, accommodate the core interests of others and their major concerns, and respect the sovereignty, security and development interests of each other, he said. They also need to oppose hegemonism and power politics, reject a Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation, and work together to build a global community of security for all, according to Xi.Zhu Jiejin, a professor of global governance studies at Fudan University's School of International Relations and Public Affairs, said, "Considering the severe global economic downturn and challenges posed by the lingering Ukraine crisis, the upcoming BRICS Summit hosted by China is expected to inject more confidence into the world."In terms of development, Xi said that it is more important than ever for emerging markets and developing countries to strengthen solidarity and cooperation. He underlined the need for the five BRICS countries to engage in dialogue and exchanges with more emerging markets and for developing countries to increase mutual understanding and trust, strengthen cooperation, and deepen the convergence of interests. The goal is to make the pie of cooperation bigger and the force for progress stronger and contribute more to the lofty vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, he added."The world is closely tracking how BRICS nations will address and contribute to global security and development given the drastic changes in the international situation that have taken place since February," said Xu Xiujun, director of the International Political Economy Department of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of World Economics and Politics.Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, sent a congratulatory message on Thursday to the BRICS Political Parties, Think Tanks and Civil Society Organizations Forum hosted by the International Department of the CPC Central Committee.Xi said that the global economic recovery remains fragile and sluggish, the development gap is widening, and the world is facing serious challenges in climate change and digital governance.China stands ready to work with other countries, including other BRICS members, to step up implementation of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and advance the Global Development Initiative to jointly build a community for global development, he said.记者:张陨壁 曹德胜

Episode 213: Support the Working Life Network here: www.patreon.com/WorkingLifePodcast ActBlue: secure.actblue.com/donate/working-life-1 “Bi-partisanship” is an idea that should make everyone sick to their stomach. When someone is out to kill you, or your nation and community, making a deal for the sake of “bi-partisanship” or, its related political spineless copout “compromise”, makes no sense when the end result is injustice and a worsening of our lives. That’s what I start out with today—a topic I also wrote about in my new newsletter, which you can subscribe to here. Quick, who said just a couple of days ago: “We believe that $15-an-hour is the minimum that anyone in the U.S. should earn for an hour of labor” and, then, demanded that Congress raise the minimum wage to $15-an-hour. If you said Bernie Sanders, wrong! Though of course he does believe this. It was…wait for this…Amazon. Inspired by his Grandmother’s gospel records, a four- year-old Patrick climbed atop a piano bench and began to play by ear. Thus began his lifetime love affair with gospel music, a passion which has consumed and driven him… Patrick attended Norfolk State University and received the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal music and in 2016 he completed his Masters Degree at Liberty University. While attending NSU, he was appointed director of the Voices of Inspiration Gospel Choir and won many awards and choral competitions with them. He is best celebrated for his flamboyant, aggressive, high energy, yet technical style of choir directing and has been deemed as the "Prince of Choirs". He has served as a background vocalist and choir director for many plays, gospel artists, recordings and workshops. He currently serves under his mentor Minister Ricky Dillard as assistant director in his, Grammy nominated, Stellar Award winning choir New Generation Chorale, Chicago, Illinois. Episode 191: China’s leaders and wealthy elites are willing partners of global capitalism, opening up its doors, willingly, to Wal-Mart and huge multinational companies so those companies can produce trillions of dollars of stuff using cheap slave labor—in good capitalist style. Since 2017, China has been conducting a steady campaign of mass transfer of more than a million Uyghurs and members of other Muslim minorities into a vast network of ‘re-education camps’ in the far west region of Xinjiang, which Uyghur activists call “east Turkestan”. Support the Working Life Network here: www.patreon.com/WorkingLifePodcast and at ActBlue: secure.actblue.com/donate/working-life-1 Think of the Japanese internment camps in the U.S. during WWII or apartheid in South Africa—the key difference, is that this is being driven a lot by the thirst of global capitalism for cheap, slave labor. Tens of thousands of Uyghurs are being forced to work in factories that are in the supply chains of at least 83 well-known global brands in the technology, clothing and automotive sectors, including Apple, BMW, Gap, Huawei, Nike, Samsung, Sony and Volkswagen. Tomorrow, a worldwide call will be issued by 71 Uyghur rights groups and over 100 civil society organizations and labor unions from around the world demanding that apparel brands and retailers stop using the forced labor. Rahima Mahmut, a Uyghur singer, award-winning translator, and human rights activist who is living in exile in London, and Brian Finnegan, the Global Worker Rights Coordinator in the International Department of the AFL-CIO, join the show to talk about the campaign. Support the Working Life Network here: www.patreon.com/WorkingLifePodcast and at ActBlue: secure.actblue.com/donate/working-life-1 Some things never change no matter when tax day falls—we pay our taxes, while the rich and big corporations dodge paying their fair share. Amazon paid zero taxes in 2017 and 2018, despite having huge profits and, lo and behold, Amazon is making a big deal out of paying taxes in 2019—a whopping 1.2 percent of its $13 billion in profits. One of the reasons these very rich people and corporations can scam us is the careful, relentless undermining of the IRS. And Congress has been the willing tool for that anti-IRS campaign, cutting its budgets year after year. What that means is simple: rich people and corporations don’t pay what they should because they know the IRS can’t keep pace with the armies of lawyers hired by rich people and corporations to dodge and avoid taxes. Hundreds of billions of dollars go unpaid and about 70 percent of that “underpayment”—which is a euphemism for dodging—is by the top one percent. Episode 136: It seems so simple—post offices are everywhere, often literally on Main Streets in towns all across the country. Everyone knows where the post office is. So, why not turn post offices into hubs of financial transactions for people, from pay check cashing, which could be a first step, and then on to remittances of money to families around the globe and even installing Postal Service ATMs? You can boil down this down to a simple question: who would you rather give your business to, Citibank or the Post Office? I take up this idea with Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, and Ohio Representative Marcy Kaptur. Then, Catherine Feingold, director of the AFL-CIO’s International Department, is back to dig into a new global treaty to combat violence and harassment at work. -- Jonathan Tasini Follow me on Twitter @jonathantasini Sign up for The Working Life Podcast at: www.workinglife.org Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.tasini.3

In the framework of the 7th World Forum on Energy Regulation (WFER), ICER Women in Energy and FSR teamed up to ‘give a voice’ to women professionals actively contributing to the event Bevan Flansburg is the Deputy Director in the International Department at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). In this podcast, Bevan and Swetha start off by discussing sustainable energy regulation on a global level and economic and clean energy factors regulators must take into consideration to create sound regulation. Bevan sheds light on the capacity building programs she and her team work on in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East as well as the regional partnerships which she has designed throughout her career, including the West Africa Regional Regulatory Partnership and the East Africa Regional Regulatory Partnership. Tapping into the knowledge of public utility regulators across the United States, those programmes and partnerships use peer to peer engagements to provide strategic support, ensuring that regulators in developing countries acquire the knowledge they need in order to make tangible improvements in energy regulation. A main challenge Bevan mentions regarding the regional efforts is to find a common thread between the countries who have similar regulatory goals but need a tailored approach to achieve them. Her team uses a consensus-driven approach to provide tailored support to regulators, giving them the tools they need to build effective clean energy policies within their national action plans. That Deep Ocean… by Ana Cândida Carneiro Translated from the Italian by Stephen PidcockIn Brazilian-Italian author Ana Cândida Carneiro’s That Deep Ocean…, a two-character audio play written in Italian and translated into English by Stephen Pidcock, a single day in a woman’s life becomes an epic journey of self-discovery. The action shifts between the character’s everyday world, where she's trapped in a dreary job, and an alternative realm, part dreamscape, part subconscious. In that world, she converses—by turns awestruck, challenging, and playful—with an underwater sea creature who presents as a powerful, seductive, masculine presence. She perceives him as a giant squid, but he might also be an aspect of herself. In language that alternates between the poetic and the matter-of-fact, That Deep Ocean... explores questions of identity, love, and death. The Play for Voices production of That Deep Ocean... was directed and co-produced by Sarah Montague and performed by Amanda Quaid and Peter Francis James. Brazilian composer Fernando Arruda provided original music for Matt Fidler’s sound design.Play for Voices audio plays are recorded at Harvestworks by audio engineer Kevin Ramsay.Play for Voices is produced by Matt Fidler, Anne Posten, Katrin Redfern, and Jen Zoble.About the Author and TranslatorAna Cândida Carneiro (author) is an award-winning Brazilian-Italian playwright, currently based in the US. Last month China held a major international forum on its Belt and Road Initiative, the first of its kind since Beijing announced the project in 2013. Drawing official delegations, scholars, entrepreneurs, as well as representatives from financial institutions and media organizations from 130 nations, the forum was an important step in China’s drive to develop infrastructure and connectivity along the “Belt and Road Corridors” from China to Africa, Europe, South and Southeast Asia. Though many important details about the initiative remain unclear, foreign businesses are already vying for opportunities to join the initiative, and their excitement was primed by President’s Xi Jinping’s promise at the Forum to raise tens of billions of dollars in new financing. The event generated some concern about whether actual profits and benefits will match expectations. From the perspectives both of recipient countries and investors, the Belt and Road Initiative represents huge potential and significant risk. Amid the enthusiasm and apprehension surrounding the project, a robust dialogue and accurate information are critical. In support of this, the National Committee and the India China Institute of the New School hosted a delegation of financial and economic scholars led by the director general of the International Finance Department of the China Development Bank, Mr. Liang Huijiang, to discuss the May 2017 Belt and Road Forum on June 20, 2017 with moderator Mark Frazier, professor of politics and director of the New School’s India-China Institute. Between 1998 and 2003 Mr. Liang was special assistant to Mr. Chen Yuan, then president of the CDB. In that capacity, he was in charge of developing strategies as the CDB transformed itself from a semi-government agency into a market-oriented bank. Before joining CDB, Mr. Liang worked in the International Department of the People’s Bank of China, where he was involved in annual consultations between China and the IMF and reform of China’s exchange rate regime. Mr. Liang holds a master’s degree in finance from the London Business School (2004), a master’s in economics from the PBC School of Finance, Tsinghua University (1996), and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Hangzhou University (1993).
