Episode 222 - Undercarriage Carnage Do you guys remember having the talk with your parents? The really awkward one about how, “you're getting older now, and you're going to start seeing some changes in your body”. You know, THAT talk. It's great that they tried to prepare us and all, but there were some pretty glaring omissions from the information they gave us. They told us about the growing pains, body hair, and B.O. However, they failed to mention that our negative postpubescent feelings would actually manifest themselves as stress demons that could exit and enter our a** at will, to exact revenge on the people who have wronged us. And that thing about the teeth inside of girls hoo-hahs? We think we would remember the mentioning something like that. Lucky for us, and our kids, we found two movies that will someday help us explain these changes in a healthy and informative way. So grab some of The Brown Note American Brown Ale from Against The Grain Brewery and join us for a lesson in gross anatomy. Cheers!!! Follow us! Operating any kind of heavy equipment is assumed to be a difficult task and construction companies believe none other than the experienced lot that they have when it comes to working a track loader. This means that the newer lot will get less exposure to it. Well this is not the case though as far as large construction companies are concerned. They prefer both experienced and inexperienced operators to work on track loaders. It is quite obvious that a company has to shell out more for an experienced guy than they have to pay for a newbie. Keeping that in mind, they prefer training the new guys under the older ones so that they get maximum exposure and learn to operate the tracker on their own. Other than that there are so many training videos that one can have access to that will help a trainee learn from it. All you need is an internet connection to make your life simple. The practical part can be achieved only at the jobsite. Knowing the functions is crucial:- A track loader comes with various functions that are meant for different purposes. An operator should be aware of all those functions and should also understand to use which function at what time. That is perhaps the most crucial part of his job. Every other switch or lever or a joystick that one can see inside the cabin is there for a specific purpose and it is important to know the different functions of those mechanisms. This is the first step forward to learn to operate a track loader. Move the bucket well before you begin your day:- One should primarily start his work by first checking if all the functions of the machine is in order. So start the engine and try to move the machine a bit. Check if it is moving smoothly. Other than that, try to move the bucket using the levers inside the cabin. You will ideally not find the levers in a rough state but the problem lies more on the execution part. You must have pressed the lever to move the bucket but it just does not move or it does move at a very slow pace. You should keep this into consideration before you begin your day’s work. Also check the brakes are in order. Try applying brakes after moving the loader at a medium speed. This will let you know the exact condition of the brakes. Undercarriage and the tracks are an important component:- The undercarriage and the tracks are perhaps the most expensive component in the machine and also that it gets deteriorated after having worked for just 800 hours. When you are working in rough conditions the chances of the tracks to get ruin increases tremendously. This is something that you got make note of while you are operating the machine. It is not a tough job to operate a loader. It is just that you got to keep few things into consideration while you are working on it.

The Platform Bed build is just getting underway. This first episode is the construction of the "undercarriage" or support system for the slats that will be used to keep the mattress from falling through the middle of the platform frame. Because it's being hidden from view I decided to not use the same wood species as the rest of the bed frame, in fact the secondary wood is just Poplar. It's plain, simple and more importantly in my neck of the woods, inexpensive. The design of this support system is very straight forward and there are a number of options for constructing it. The joinery choice for me came down to something that was pretty simple but very strong, a corner lap joint. And to take that lap joint even further, the joinery for the long middle support is a half-blind lap joint. How I constructed both of these joints is something I share in today's episode. There's different ways to construct each and my choice is the one that works best for me. But if you want to learn more about what the various options are for this joinery and many more, a great resource for the power tool user is the book "Classic Joints with Power Tools" by Yeung Chan. I'm not sure why, but this weekend made me take pause from a General Aviation perspective. There were two fatal accidents in SW Missouri that caught my eye. The first, was a tragic story of a father, mother, and two children that were killed when the A36 took off from a friend's grass field, only to stall at about 100 feet over the tree tops. Their 5 year old is in critical condition. The second was a business owner that entered into a thunderstorm which ripped his Saratoga into pieces. As a pilot, I immediately jumped to the conclusion in the first accident that the field may have been short, soft, and probably at a high density altitude. With 5 people, even though three were children, luggage, and who knows how much fuel, I can imagine the pilot saw the trees coming at him, pulled back and took aim for the tree tops. My theory could be way off base, but if it is, then this type of accident probably happened somewhere else recently. Since no thunderstorm has ever outpaced an airplane, the pilot flew into the storm, expecting to get through it. My experience is that when there is an accident, pilots that read about it, generally figure out what went wrong in less than 30 minutes, which is proved right a year later, when the NTSB releases its findings that the pilot was unable to maintain control of the airplane when it (fill in the blank). The reason why our community is able to pinpoint the issue, is because the list of alternatives is finite, and we've been through this before. So the question is, if the list is so small and its the same mistakes over and over, then why aren't pilots (especially the good ones), staying out of those situations? The answer is discussed and discovered in tonight's show. As pilot's we are taught about proper flight planning to limit risks associated with making a flight. We are given cool mnemonics, like, IMSAFE (Illness, Medications, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Emotion/Eating) and PAVE (Pilot, Aircraft, environmental, External pressures). We're also taught about dangerous attitudes: * Anti-Authority * Impulsive * Invulnerability * Macho * Resignation And to top it off, all pilots are taught to make and respect personal minimums. Seems like we have plenty of education on how to make intelligent decisions regarding a flight. The problem is that pilots are also taught to be procedural and to stick to a process, whether its GUMPS (Gas, Undercarriage, Mixture, Prop, Safety/Switches or the 5 (or 7) T's (Turn, Time, Twist, Throttle, Talk, Tires, Track). It doesn't matter if your plane doesn't have retractable gear, just skip that step. We can apply our acronyms to a diverse set of circumstances. The same is said for personal minimums. We're taught to determine our minimum ceilings, visibility, and cross wind component and commit that to memory. There are two problems with this. One, the list is incomplete. Doesn't it also make sense to add items like how much fuel should you have when you land at your destination, how much sleep you should have the night before a flight, and various other factors. Second, the personal minimum equation assumes it only changes when your confidence supports making the change. In reality, your personal minimums should change with each flight, based on what aircraft you'll be flying, the weather, the passengers, the destination airport, and so on. And why don't we do live by this concept? COMPLACENCY and MISPLACED CONFIDENCE. We fly between these two airports all the time, I can go. Never mind that you're flying in a different aircraft that doesn't have the horsepower and avionics that you're so used to flying. Never mind that you didn't sleep so well and that you skipped breakfast. It's decent weather, so I am good to go! True confidence comes from practicing with a purpose, proper planning, and understanding the factors and alternatives in play for each flying event. That confidence will drive a proper set of considerations in building your custom personal minimums for that flight. As pilots, we have the power to make a significant contribution to making our passion a safer and more rewarding experience. I have a saying that everyone is either committed or complacent, there is no in-between. Right now, which one is you? More important, starting from this point forward, which one will be you? BLUE SKIES and TAILWINDS!
