In this week's episode, Thos takes a close look at the 1930 Marx Brothers musical comedy film, Animal Crackers, and its place against the backdrop of a number of transitions - the move from stage to screen for the madcap quartet, the loss of popularity of Hollywood film musicals at the end of the 1920s, the move from prosperity to economic slump following the Wall Street Crash, and how the film industry was learning to adapt stage shows for the silver screen after only four years of talkies!  And we take an additional look at Margaret Dumont, dubbed by Groucho himself as the "fifth Marx Brother", who began with opera and ended in rock 'n' roll and who worked with Laurel and Hardy, and WC Fields along the way. As Groucho said "Blessed are the crack(er)ed, for they shall let in the light!"

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Take a wooden puppet, a guy who can't quite keep his lips from moving, and add impeccable comic timing and you just might come up with Edgar Bergen, often considered the premiere ventriloquist of the 20th century. With his "dummies" Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd, Bergen was a hit in vaudeville, then on radio -- quite a feat for someone whose act generally requires the audience to see the artist. But Bergen's rapid verbal repartee with his puppets -- especially Charlie McCarthy -- captivated audiences and led to movie roles and tv appearances down the line. Bergen earned not one, not two, but three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to movies, radio, and television. As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Edgar Bergen? Here's a nice long sample of Edgar and Charlie in action, from their 1950 Thanksgiving special. https://youtu.be/oJVrK408nyQ?si=-nhi_PPPvj9JfsBZ Bergen's other comic foil was Mortimer Snerd -- as slow-witted as Charlie McCarthy is quick-witted. It led to fun, as in this bit with Bing Crosby.https://youtu.be/_8YBiWU5Ok4?si=o-Dum7JIiABl9hVk In 1939 Bergen and Charlie starred in You Can't Cheat on Honest Man with WC Fields and Charlie wasted no time in annoying his co-star. https://fb.watch/xQv-XqQbRm/ Bergen and McCarthy made their final screen appearance in 1978's The Muppet Movie -- a fitting farewell to a master puppeteer. https://youtu.be/5EDVCevIB-Q?si=sh9Nhmus0fSxWQ-P

Words like 'legend', 'icon' and 'star' were created to describe Mae West! Our guest, Michael Gregg Michaud has written his third Mae West book, Mae West And Her Adonises which focuses on her revolutionary 50s nightclub act featuring a chorus line of muscle men. Mae set the stage for the male revue, now a staple of Vegas bachelorette parties and girls' nights out! Michael's book is packed with photos, press interviews, Mae's wickedly quippy and saucy one-liners and details about an act that was literally stopping traffic in every town it visited. Mae's first and only love was the stage but much like any episode of The Bachelorette, the Adonises found themselves lost in love for her and competitively pining for her attention, ultimately coming to blows when Chuck Krauser threw a punch at Mickey Hargitay. Hearts and jaws were broken and a high profile court case ensued. Mae was the O.G. of branding, literally carving her image out of strategically erected costumes, padding, wigs, headdresses and heals. She wrote and produced her own content, walking right up to the wall of naughty and bawdy but never crossing into tasteless. She artfully tap-danced around censors and male industry leaders, knowing innately what her audience would embrace. Mae famously jabbed and feuded with Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield and W.C. Fields and maintained lifelong friendships with Louise Beavers, her boxer buddies, and the animals she adored. All this Plus Fritz and Weezy are recommending Bad Monkey on Apple + and Wicked Little Lies on Netflix. Path Points of Interest:Michael Gregg Michaud Michael Gregg Michaud on AmazonMae West and Her AdonisesMichael Gregg Michaud on FacebookMichael Gregg Michaud on InstagramMae West on IMDBMae West Stage Show - 1957Bad Monkey on Apple +Wicked Little Letters on NetflixGift of DemocracyMedia Path Podcast

1. It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to. WC Fields. We all have labels. I was a jock but I answered to good student - which we addressed last week. At AEG they called us ticket salesman. We answered to entrepreneurial sales professional. At Stubhub they called us brokers. We answered to tech disruptors. At TicketManager they've called us niche. We answer to market creators. I get called a lot of names. I answer to one. What we answer to defines the chances we take, what we think we can do, and where we end up. It sounds easier than it is. There are difficult moments where we have almost no leverage and we have to stand up for ourselves- I'll share one in the future from my experience at the Dodgers and again at AEG - but it is more important than we think. 2. "All happy families resemble one another but each unhappy family fails in its own way." Business advice seems so obvious when offered by the successful. But when put together as "ands" not "ors", it is anything but. Check all the boxes or..... 3. There are no rental cars anywhere on Maui this week. Nor dinner reservations. Two months ago, we paid $16/day for a car and the island was empty. Walk-in anywhere even only at 30% capacity. Package sales are through the roof for future events and it isn't corporate - it's consumers paying super premiums for 2's and 4s. Everything our customers post is selling for over face- even the crappy games and parking passes. The faucet is turning on and gaining speed. If it continues - look out.

There are lots of good stories told during this really fast hour. They may call Hollywood Tinseltown, but in many cases, that tinsel is a bit tarnished.

NBC's excellent documentary series, "Biography In Sound" was broadcast from 1954 to 1958. A NBC newsman, Joesph Meyers, began the series with a documentary on Winston Churchill for his 80th birthday on November 30, 1954. The program was an instant success and highly praised by critics for its production values and historical accuracy. The second program in the series was based on the writer Ernest Hemingway... and again there was wide acclaim for the show. After a third documentary on Gertrude Lawrence, the show became a serial and aired on a weekly basis for an hour beginning in February of 1955. Meyers combined comments made by friends and foes of the subject of the documentary with sound clips from a tape library that he had collected since 1949. Audiences were enthralled by how well this show was put together. Many wonderful biographies, including WC Fields, Fred Allen, Babe Ruth, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ethyl Barrymore, Frank Sinatra Orson Welles and many more were produced until the series ended in 1958 with the Biography of Theodore Roosevelt. More programs from this series are found in the "Biography of Sound" Playlist.

The legend of W. C. Fields has persisted for more than half a century—the gin-guzzling misanthrope about whom Leo Rosten famously said, “Any man who hates dogs and babies can’t be all bad.” But there was another Fields, the man behind the character of the red-nosed card sharp, who wrote, directed, and performed in some of the most enduring comedies of all time, including "It’s a Gift", "My Little Chickadee", and "The Bank Dick". Fields’ career spanned the whole of the 20th Century—first in burlesque, then vaudeville, the legitimate stage, silent pictures, talkies, radio, books, and recordings, and only death prevented him from moving into the promising medium of television, where he found an entirely new audience in the turbulent 1960s and 70s. He was one of the cultural icons surrounding The Beatles on the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and in 1980 he was honored with his own postage stamp. Now James Curtis reveals the man behind the myth, telling the story of Fields’ life and work as it’s never been told before. With exclusive and unrestricted access to the Great Man’s papers and manuscripts, he shows us the passion and intellect that fueled Fields’ creative drive, and the broken family that gave such a bitter edge to his comedy. Drawing from interviews with over 50 friends and co-workers, as well as the comedian’s own recently-rediscovered notes for his autobiography, Curtis vividly details Fields’ Philadelphia childhood, his first tentative steps as a performer, his arduous climb to the very pinnacle of show business, and his struggle to regain his footing once talking pictures had seemingly put an end to his career. He also shows the evolution of one of the world’s most recognizable figures, whose nasal voice and shifty mannerisms helped make him, in the words of James Agee, “the toughest and most warmly human of all screen comedians.” Published in hardcover by Alfred A. Knopf, 2003. Softcover edition published by Back Stage Books, 2004. Now available as an eBook at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. Inscribed hardcover copies are available for sale via jamescurtis.net.

Through some record skips, Don and Jack joke around about going to the movies. Frank Parker, and Don Besser prove they can jump into the jokes, in a pinch. All that pinching turns into a running gag for the evening. Jack wants to get some new tallent for the show, and has Mary call an agent.   As is typical for these old programs, the music is snipped. After what would have been Don Besser's song, the cast talk about Boston. The new tallent arrives. A man who tells jokes and juggles plates. Jack gives commentary on the plate juggling. More tallent arrives. More pinching jokes.  After Frank Parker's song is snipped, and another from Don Besser, the drama begins. the Rose of the Rio Grande. The cast try out their Spanish accents. Jack is the protective dad. Mary is the daughter who wants to elope with a gringo, Frank Parker. Plenty of humorous butchered dialect. The hair joke shows up again. Don Besser doesn't do dialect, but still gets a laugh. At the big climactic end, Schlepperman makes an appearance, but it's Jello that saves the day.  Bonus Tracks: Leah Raye, 1933. Fit as a Fiddle. Trivia and Extras: Eddie Cantor is mentioned, but I don't have any of his radio shows from this early period. Yet. I may try to bring him into the lineup, eventually.  Don announces Jack as a self made man, which is true of course. Most folks in show biz are. I love the joke that Don turns on Jack when Don is asked whether he is also self made.  In an earlier episode, just a few weeks prior to this show, the gang did a spoof of the film, The Barret's of Wimpole Street. Mary keeps the running gag going as she imitates the character that Charles Laughton played in the movie. "Ya hear me?" The joking juggler tells a joke that had been a running gag on these early shows. One about hair. It's one of those things where the same set up can have various punch lines. Another method for word plays was to ask a definition of a word, and get a crazy one back.  Other famous joking jugglers of the early 20th century were Fred Allen, and WC Fields. On tonight's show, Fred isn't talked about, but WC Fields is.  The female voice actress who plays the extra tallent sent by Jake, and later the voice of the Spanish maid, is Mary Kelly. A former girlfriend of Jack, she frequently appeared on the show through the 1930's.  Schlepperman, along with other recurring characters were voiced by Joe Kern. In the 1940's and later, Artie Auerback would make similar appearances as Mr. Kitzel.
