In object-oriented programming, delegation refers to the evaluating a member (property or method) of one object (the receiver) to the context of another object (the sender). Basically a way to proxy calls from one object to the other and avoid the overuse of inheritance, avoid runtime mixins or traits. WireBox provides a set of rules for method lookup and method dispatching that will allow you to provide delegation easily in your CFML applications.https://ortussolutions.notion.site/WireBox-Delegators-8608752a03d345ad80f8c1a1b441a428 CommandBox vNext supports providing SSL certs in PFX formatCommandBox vNext finally supports providing SSL certs in PFX format, which is a single file containing the public and private key as opposed to needing those in two separate files.https://ortussolutions.atlassian.net/browse/COMMANDBOX-1499 New Releases and UpdatesLucee released 5.3.9.166 StableThis a minor bug fix release, which addresses a few bugs listed below, mainly relating to concurrency or errors under heavy load.Anyone running 5.3.9.160 is encouraged to update to this release.https://dev.lucee.org/t/lucee-5-3-9-166-stable-release/11319 Restoring the CF Admin logviewer removed in Oct 2022 CF updates, at your own riskAs of the Oct 2022 CF updates (CF2021 update 5 and CF2018 update 15), Adobe has chosen to remove the CF Admin feature to view, search, download, and delete CF logs, due to asserted (but as-yet undocumented) security concerns. What if you want it back? Charlie Arehart - “How the Adobe CF Docker Images Have Evolved”Wednesday November 16 at 12pm – 1pm EST.Since Adobe's original 2018 release of Docker images for CF (initially for cf2018 and cf2016), the configurability features built into them have improved in significant ways, especially with cf2021, which is much smaller, faster, and whose admin settings can be configured via json. This avatar is served from Gravatar, which is (probably) the most popular avatar system on the web (brought to us by the same people who built WordPress). Unfortunately, serving avatars from Gravatar was hurting my Chrome LightHouse scores due to Gravatar's very short caching controls (5-mins). To help improve my LightHouse score, I'm starting to proxy the Gravatar images on my ColdFusion server, applying a custom Cache-Control HTTP header.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4351-proxying-gravatar-images-for-better-avatar-caching-in-coldfusion.htm 11/5/22 - Linked In Post - Luis Majano - J on the Beach Meetup in Malaga Spain We had a great time!!! This has been possible since 2019, but you could have missed when the change was introduced via CF2018 update 5 in Sep 2019–and of course the option is also built into CF 2021.This is one of those settings which can be enabled/controlled at either:the server level: via the CF Admin “Settings” page, and its “Use Java as Regex Engine” optionor the application level: via the this.useJavaAsRegexEngine in application.cfc (or an attribute of the same name in cfapplication, if using application.cfm)https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2022/11/switching-cf-to-use-java-regex-engine/ 11/5/22 - Blog - Charlie Arehart - ColdFusion Portal - Come learn “How the Adobe CF Docker Images Have Evolved”, launching CF Summit onlineThe first session for the Adobe ColdFusion Summit Online has been announced. This is really only necessary in DAO methods that provide dynamic, parameterized SQL queries; but, it offers me a great deal of comfort. The pattern works by requiring each query to include at least one indexed column in the dynamically generated SQL statement.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4348-preventing-unbounded-full-table-scans-in-my-coldfusion-database-access-layer.htm 11/1/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - CFCookie "Expires" Can Use CreateTimeSpan() In ColdFusionAs I've been trying to build-up my knowledge of how Cookies interact with ColdFusion applications, I noticed that the CFCookie tag accepts a "number of days" in its expires attribute. And, the moment I see "days", I think "time-spans". As such, I wanted to see if I could use the createTimeSpan() function to define the cookie expires attribute in ColdFusion - turns out, you can!https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4347-cfcookie-expires-can-use-createtimespan-in-coldfusion.htm 10/31/22 - Blog - Charlie Arehart - ColdFusion Portal - Solving “Failed Signature Verification” when downloading CF updates while using Java 11.0.17 or laterJust a quick note to clarify that if you may apply the new Java updates from Oct 18 2022 (such as Java 11.0.17) and change CF to use that, you will find (for now) that if you then try to download any CF updates using the CF Admin, the update will download but then you'll get an error:“error occurred while installing the update: Failed Signature Verification”Here's good news: there is a solution for that problem, actually a few alternatives you can consider, at least until Adobe resolves the problem for us. For more, see a blog post I did with much more detail - linked in this post.https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2022/10/solving-failed-signature-verification-when-downloading-cf-updates-in-2022/ 10/31/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Looking At How Cookies And Domains Interact In ColdFusionIn my previous post on leading dots (.) in Cookie domains, I mentioned that my mental model for how Cookies work leaves something to be desired. Along the same lines, I don't have a solid understanding for when Cookies with explicit / non-explicit Domain attributes are sent to the server. As such, I wanted to run some experiments using different combinations of setting and getting of cookie values in ColdFusion. In order to start exploring Cookie domain behaviors, I went into my /etc/hosts file locally and defined a series of subdomains that all point back to my localhost:https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4346-looking-at-how-cookies-and-domains-interact-in-coldfusion.htm 10/31/22 - Blog - Charlie Arehart - Special offer to upgrade to CF2021 from CF2016 or earlier, saving thousands of dollarsIf you're running CF2016 or earlier, now's your chance (though the end of the year) to save potentially thousands of dollars in upgrading to the latest current version, CF2021. Intergral, the folks who make the FusionReactor monitoring tool and service, are again offering a special deal (that even Adobe is not offering).Read on for more details.https://www.carehart.org/blog/2022/10/31/special_offer_upgrade_to_cf2021_from_cf2016_or%20earlier 10/30/22 - Blog - James Moberg - Undocumented Change to ColdFusion 2021 CFHTMLHead & CFContentAccording to my unit tests, after ColdFusion 2018.0.0-15, Adobe changed the way that CFHTMLHead works with CFContent. Prior to CF2021, any strings that were added to the header buffer via CFHTMLHead was outputted to the HTML HEAD section (or top of the page if you neglected to include a HEAD section) on onRequestEnd even if a CFContent (with or without reset) was performed.https://dev.to/gamesover/change-to-coldfusion-2021-cfhtmlhead-cfcontent-1fj8 10/29/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Leading Dots On HTTP Cookie Domains IgnoredI've been using Cookies in my ColdFusion web applications forever. But, I honestly don't have the best mental model for how the low-level intricacies of cookies work. For most of my career, I only ever defined cookies using a "name", "value", and an "expires" attributes — I didn't even know you could define a "domain" until we had to start locking down enterprise-cookies (by subdomain) at InVision. And even now, I'm still fuzzy on how the domain setting operates; which is why something caught my eye when I was reading through the Set-Cookie HTTP header docs on MDN: https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4345-leading-dots-on-http-cookie-domains-ignored.htm 10/28/22 - Blog - Grant Copley - Ortus Solutions - CBWIRE 2.1 ReleasedCBWIRE, our ColdBox module that makes building reactive, modern CFML apps delightfully easy, just dropped its 2.1 release. Not all entities fit into this model (such as rows that can never be updated); but, for the most part, this core set of columns makes sense. The "updated" column has no semantic meaning within the application - it is simply a mechanical recording of when any part of a row is updated. The biggest mistake that I've made with this column is allowing the customers to attach meaning to this column. This never works out well. https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4344-a-database-column-for-date-updated-has-no-semantic-meaning-nor-should-it.htm 10/25/22 - Blog - Charlie Arehart - Upcoming Adobe webinar on preview of CF2023, date and title changeAdobe had announced some weeks ago two upcoming webinars, one as a preview of CF2023 (originally set for Dec 22), and the other on mobile apps with CF and Monaco (originally set for Nov 23).If like me you may have signed up for them, note that sometime recently the dates have been swapped. I've been building ColdFusion applications for two-decades, and I'm only just now starting to feel like I'm finding helpful patterns that balance complexity and utility. And, I still have so much to figure out. As I've been refactoring / modernizing the code for my ColdFusion blog, I keep running in to unanswered question. My blog has both a public facing system and an admin facing system; and, I'm starting to wonder if these are two distinct bounded contexts for errors and error messages.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4342-considering-the-bounded-context-of-error-messages-in-a-coldfusion-application.htm 10/21/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Using MailHog SMTP Server With ColdFusion And DockerAt work, we've been using an email testing tool called MailHog. I first learned about MailHog from my co-worker, Shawn Grigson, who added it to our Lucee CFML docker-compose.yaml file some years ago. MailHog provides both an SMTP server for receiving emails and a rather elegant user interface (UI) for reading and deleting said emails. Yesterday, I went to add MailHog into my personal blog's ColdFusion Docker setup; and, I was blown away at just how easy it was to get going.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4340-using-mailhog-smtp-server-with-coldfusion-and-docker.htm 10/21/22 - Blog - Ortus Solutions - CF Summit, Ortus presentations available!FSummit was a successful event. Which meant, if I had an optional or transient relationship between two entities in my database, I could query for a record and then simply check .recordCount on the CFQuery results to see if the relationship existed. Now, however, with a layered ColdFusion architecture that boasts a strong separation of concerns, that raw data is abstracted away; and, while many things have become easier, dealing with these transient relationships has become a bit harder. And, I'm still trying to figure out how to best handle this in ColdFusion.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4328-considering-control-flow-and-transient-data-relationships-in-coldfusion.htm9/27/22 - Blog - Wil De Bruin - Quick create issuesToday one of my colleagues was working on some API project. That proof-of-concept was constructed in Lucee CFML using a standard post-back workflow wherein each navigation begot a full page refresh. Over the last few weeks, I've been dribbling some effort into creating a thick-client experience using Angular 14. The UI (User Interface) still leaves a lot to be desired; but, I think as a second-stage proof-of-concept, there's enough here to be demoed.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4323-adding-an-angular-14-front-end-to-my-coldfusion-feature-flag-exploration.htm 9/16/22 - Blog - James Moberg - areBracesValid UDF for ColdFusion/CFMLI was using a version of smartSearch from CFLib.org that I had updated with some simple regex detection for SQLi strings, but it wasn't catching everything. The event was a huge success, we had solid attendance in person, and almost doubled our online viewership from 2021, great feedback from attendees in Houston, and online. So many attendees didn't say goodbye at the end of the conference, they said see you next year, which, as an organizer lets you know you've done things right, and the hard work has paid off.https://www.ortussolutions.com/blog/into-the-box-2022-conference-recap 9/15/22 - David Tattersall - Fusion Reactor - Announcing FusionReactor 9.0We are very proud to announce the release of FusionReactor 9.0, which represents a major milestone for FusionReactor and has been almost 2 years in the making.FusionReactor has always been about helping engineers, support, and DevOps to get to the root of application problems as quickly as possible. As software engineers, the founders of the company wanted to develop a product that would be familiar to us, and which would enable us to resolve performance and stability problems quickly. Up till now, we have focused the product on serving the ColdFusion and Java applications market. Our commitment to these platforms will not change.https://www.fusion-reactor.com/blog/announcing-fusionreactor-9-0/ 9/13/22 - Michael - REVIEW: DEVOPS TOOLS FOR JAVA DEVELOPERSBoth JFrog and O'Reilly sent me a paper copy of DevOps Tools for Java Developers for review (or my reading pleasure, or hopefully both). The copies came with no strings attached and this article is my honest opinion. The book is written by Ixchel Ruiz, Melissa McKay, Stephen Chin and Baruch Sadogursky. 3 of them I met personally and all of them come very much from the developer side of things and are known people in the Java world. And I made the observation that one should never access the application scope in one's application code, other than via a proxy.https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/09/cfml-speaking-of-application-scope.html 9/8/22 - Blog - Pete Freitag - Ways to suppress a finding in FixinatorCode is complex, so any static application security testing (SAST) tool will find things that may not be an actual security issue. Fixinator has a few different ways we can deal with this problem. For example, let's suppose you have a variable application.maxstories=10 set in Application.cfc, and you use that variable in a different file like thishttps://www.petefreitag.com/item/995.cfm9/4/22 - Blog - Adam Cameron - CFML: invokeImplicitAccessor on CFCsI noticed this yesterday when I was writing my "Kotlin: the next morning learning Kotlin stuff" article. I was looking into how Kotlin handles accessor methods on properties, and remembered CFML had a similar bit of functionality, and quickly revisited it by way of comparison. Whilst looking into it, I noticed that pretty much no-one has mentioned it too much, and it's not even mentioned in the appropriate place in Adobe's on CFML reference for cfcomponent. They only mention it on CFC Implicit notation, somewhat amusingly using code they have clearly lifted from this blog (their example code mentions my son by name). The article they lifted it from is about the original variant of the functionality: "invokeImplicitAccessor is quite cool. Although has some odd quirks". CFDocs mentions it in passing in their cfcomponent docs, but don't really explain it. Lucee doesn't yet support this functionality (see LDEV-171).https://blog.adamcameron.me/2022/09/cfml-invokeimplicitaccessor-on-cfcs.html 9/3/22 - Blog - Brad Wood - Ortus Solutions - CommandBox 5.6.0 Released! We are pleased to announce the release of CommandBox 5.6.0, a minor release of the CFML CLI and package manager. This release contains 25 completed tickets including bug fixes, some big new features, and library updates! Please enjoy the new release, and as always, let us know if you have any issues or questions!https://www.ortussolutions.com/blog/commandbox-560-released 9/3/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Tokenizing Date/Time Values In Lucee CFML 5.3.7.47After my post yesterday, on bucketing dates using floor() in ColdFusion, James Moberg mentioned on Twitter that he prefers to tokenize his dates using the various date parts. This creates a human-friendly token as opposed to the proprietary numeric representation that I was using in my post. Using the numeric representation makes things like looping super easy; but, can make debugging a bit harder. As such, I wanted to take a moment and think about James' approach to tokenizing date/time values in Lucee CFML 5.3.7.47.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4317-tokenizing-date-time-values-in-lucee-cfml-5-3-7-47.htm 9/2/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Bucketing Dates Using floor() In ColdFusionIn ColdFusion, a date can be represented both as a date and as a number. And while you might easily get through your entire career without knowing about "numeric dates", this CFML language feature has some really neat benefits. For example, we can use floor(date) in order to get the numeric representation of the day on which a date occurs. This allows us to quickly "bucket" a set of dates by day in ColdFusion.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4316-bucketing-dates-using-floor-in-coldfusion.htm 8/31/22 - Blog - Ben Nadel - Using jSoup To Fix Post-Marriage Name Changes In ColdFusion 2021At the beginning of this year, I started using jSoup on my ColdFusion blog. This opened up all kinds of possibilities from extracting Open Graph / Twitter Card data to generating blog post previews to injecting anchor links on my section titles. And now, this morning, I realized that I could use it to fix post-marriage name changes; at least, until I update the underlying content. As you may know, I co-host a podcast called Working Code. On each episode write-up, I list out the names and links for all of our co-hosts (and the occasional guest). For the first 80+ episodes, Carol has been "Carol Hamilton". But now, in a post-nuptial era, Carol has become "Carol Weiler" - both here and around the web.https://www.bennadel.com/blog/4315-using-jsoup-to-fix-post-marriage-name-changes-in-coldfusion-2021.htm 8/31/22 - Blog - Pete Freitag - Simple Parallel Execution in ColdFusion or LuceeA really handy feature of the arrayEach() function is the parallel argument. It's a vast concept but to sum it up in a single line, it is a set of concepts and techniques that make use of the “object” construct, to write more reusable, maintainable, and organized code. Objects are implemented differently in every language. In ColdFusion, we have ColdFusion Components (CFCs) that can be instantiated to create objects.Anyone who has ever studied OOP must know that there are four main concepts, which are: Abstraction Encapsulation Inheritance Polymorphism https://www.meetup.com/hawaii-coldfusion-meetup-group/events/287606572/ Adobe Workshops & WebinarsJoin the Adobe ColdFusion Workshop to learn how you and your agency can leverage ColdFusion to create amazing web content. However, as content creators, we can help Google understand the meaning of a page by embedding structured data in our markup. In a perfect world, I'd have all of this structured data ready to go. But, in reality, I'm going to try and retroactively squeeze my current content into a structured data format: JSON+LD. In the first installation in this series, we took a tour of the various elements which make up ColdBox. In the second installation, we looked at creating layouts, views, and routes in the main site. In the third, we created a module and did the first integration of our existing code into our ColdBox site. In the fourth, we continued developing our module with a handler and passing variable back to Coldbox. Now we'll use Wirebox with and without ColdBox Modules to see how these approaches differ from a traditional approach.https://www.ortussolutions.com/blog/integrating-coldbox-with-existing-code-series-5-using-wirebox/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=contentstudio.io 8/17/22 - Blog - Julian Halliwell - Reading large spreadsheets with LuceeIf you've ever had to work with large spreadsheets in CFML you may have run up against out-of-memory (OOM) errors. This is because by default the entire workbook data has to be loaded into the available JVM memory before you can do anything with it. That means that the size of the workbook and the amount of heap space available are critical factors.I've written before on how you can overcome this with the Spreadsheet CFML library using the streaming workbook (SXSSF) format, but that only applies when writing spreadsheets. On this week's Webinar Wednesday, we talk to Ivegen Ivanko, VP of Acquisitions at Rainforest, an aggregator of Amazon businesses. He will talk about structuring your business, and best practices to follow to maximise your company's valuation. About Yev: Yev moved to England when he was 16 without parents to take an opportunity to study A-Levels. Initially, things were "bumpy", but he managed to grow and learn quickly, graduating at the top of his year. Perseverance got him fully paid place at the London School of Economics where Yev majored in Mathematics. He worked hard and won a place on a graduate scheme at Citigroup Investment Bank before moving to Deutsche Bank with a two-grade promotion. After attempting to start a business in spare time, in 2012 Yev took a leap into the world of entrepreneurship full-time, e-commerce business model was a focus for him. Yev was an early investor into a unicorn D2C brand – Dollar Shave Club. Launched and scaled a number of profitable ecommerce businesses from $0 to seven figures and co-founded Nimble Seller, a borderless working capital solution for global Amazon Sellers. Currently Yev is spearheading acquisition efforts at Rainforest – Asia-based Amazon brand acquirer. About Rainforest: Rainforest is an aggregator of Amazon FBA and DTC brands, and they were incorporated in Singapore in Oct 2020. Till date, they have acquired a handful of brands and are actively looking into more brands to acquire in 2021. They specialize in developing microbrands globally through their inhouse domain capabilities and tech expertise. Through the payout, brand owners can fund their other business expansion or pursue their personal endeavors. They are open to brands globally.

Show Notes This is the episode of Grey Matters that every person thinking about starting a business - or succeeding in their existing business - should listen to right now. The alternative may mean months or even years of focusing in the wrong direction. The age old question for entrepreneurs, "What should my business look like?" is one where the answer - or at least the correct answer - can elude us for far longer than we were hoping or imagining. Business owners are challenged with the need for customers, the desire to become profitable, and doubts about the right way to proceed. How do we balance the passions we have with the problems we can solve for customers? How do we identify the right opportunities where our business can be the answer to customer problems? In this episode of the Grey Matters podcast, Steve welcomes Mike Vardy, founder of Productivityist and author of The Front Nine: How to Start the Year You Want Anytime You Want, The Productivityist Playbook, and TimeCrafting: A Better Way to Get the Right Things Done (coming soon!). If you're heard the term "passive income," you've probably also imagined yourself relaxing on a private beach while dollar signs float dreamlike above your head. It sounds amazing, but is passive income realistic? In this episode of the Grey Matters podcast, Steve Dotto challenges our perceptions of passive income, which may range all the way from thinking of it as a pipe dream or a promised land for our online business. Passive income has been on the same level as the Holy Grail or Aladdin's Lamp for years now. As entrepreneurs build our businesses, we repeatedly see assurances and promises online from soothsayers who guarantee they have the secret for how we can also achieve passive income. But it's important to define exactly what passive income is, and specifically what work must be done to try to succeed at. Because passive income isn't all there is for us. There are several ways and means to make money with your business, and if we focus on passive income we may count ourselves out of other, more reliable methods to earn money through what we know or do. By the end of this episode, you'll be able to define several ways you can earn income, and they aren't pipe dreams. With the right approach and effort, your income can get you a bit closer to that promised land of entrepreneurial success. Ever imagine how you look and then see a picture which jars you back into reality? How we spend our time - or think we're spending it - often works the same way: our perception can be way off from reality. In this episode of Grey Matters, Steve shares how you can honestly learn how you're spending or misspending your time and, more importantly, how to get it back! We live in an age of constant distractions. Think about all of the things vying for your attention: website tabs, notifications on your computer, notifications and calls on your smartphone, notifications on your wearables, deliveries, loved ones. And we haven't even mentioned that all of this can be aggravated by everyone being home more due to lockdowns and quarantines! Today it's tougher than ever before to stay focused and get in our flow, which is when we can accomplish the best work. That's one thing Steve wants to help you with this week as he challenges you to an exercise that will show you where your time is going each day. Whether your goal is to get more work done or better work done - or a combination of both - this episode will get you on the road to reclaimed time and productivity. Staring contest between you and a blank page... Ready? Set? GO! None of us enjoy the feeling of knowing we have something to share yet being unable to put what's in our brain into words on a page. Whatever our personal obstacles are, this episode of Grey Matters will reset your thinking and help you believe that writing whatever is inside you is possible. Often we get stuck on believing that writing something as intensive and, well, as big as a book should be something that just comes out ready for the world. Yet we wouldn't think that way about baking a cake or raising a child, would we? The best things take time, effort, work, and (when possible) tweaking all along the way. Steve talks to guest Vicki McLeod - award-winning writer, coach, and entrepreneur - all about how she breaks writing down into three main areas, and then into three main themes, and then into three main topics... You get a bit of an idea of how she tackles writing major projects, and thus how you can make your writing possible a bit more digestible than daunting. In this episode of Grey Matters, Steve interviews Tod Maffin - a podcast producer who heralds back to the early days of podcasting and currently hosts a daily (you read that right) podcast called Today in Digital. What started as a bit of a copycat idea and noticing a void in the podcast universe has evolved into a powerful podcast which has a lot of pull in the digital marketing community. In the spirit of "seed and grow" business building, Tod shares how he monetizes and promotes his podcast, and where it might lead him in the future. One year. That's the milestone we just hit to mark a full year of life with a global pandemic. Did any of us foresee that we'd still be coping with the upheaval brought to us by COVID-19? In this episode of Grey Matters, we reflect on what's changed - temporarily or permanently - and how we're handling the transformation. The "New Normal" is a phrase we've often heard to reference all of the new ways we live life today: face masks and social distancing are the most obvious evidence, but consider all of the other outcomes of trying day after day to survive a pandemic. For one thing, how have our freedoms been impacted as far as travel? While in the past we could fairly affordably and easily hop on any mode of transportation to get around, the future may look very different and impact smaller communities as well as business mobility. On another topic, how has our home and work life balance had to adjust? More and more workers are finding their work space is in their home space for the long term. Cities and towns are experiencing change to their traffic trends - some for the better and some not so much. And frontline workers? In addition to healthcare and grocery employees, food service, janitorial, and delivery teams may be seen differently now that they've been on the forefront of a pandemic as their jobs put them in a position of risk so that we can all feel just a tiny bit more normal. Retirement. Whether it looms toward us or beckons to us (or a mix of both), we want to control it as much as possible. But what happens when it's more of a coerced departure? This week's Grey Matters with Steve Dotto and guest Janice Sanders explores the complexities of calling it a day when it comes to your career. Any number of conditions can determine if your retirement is a positive or negative experience, and the results of your retirement are just as complex. Will you find enough to do after you retire? Will you wind up doing too much? Are your former colleagues missing you as much as you miss them? Are you fulfilled with the legacy you're leaving, or is there more for you to do? Do you now live with regret, or are you able to leave regret in the dust? These are just a handful of questions we should each be asking ourselves before retirement creeps any closer (or saunters beside us, however you want to look at it). Janice Sanders of I Just Retired... Now What? joins Steve in a very transparent and thoughtful sharing of her experience and learnings that can help you take control of your retirement instead of retirement controlling you. Steve welcomes Joyce Feustel to share her valuable insights about coaching her generation to see LinkedIn in a new light. Why do Boomers tend to have a tougher time wielding LinkedIn for building their business? It could be generational or even based on gender as it's a primary platform for self-promotion, which doesn't come as naturally to many people. Take a listen to all the reasons that Steve and Joyce give for how Boomers and even GenXers can use LinkedIn today: Reconnecting with people in your network Delivering value through your experience and skills Providing thought leadership that can set you apart, or even ahead, of the rest of the crowd This week also catches you up on the latest in marketing and business news you can use as you build your brand online. As we Boomers and GenXers build our businesses today, we must shift from the "build and deploy" mentality of then and shift to the "seed and grow" approach in the now. This episode of Grey Matters takes a brief trip down memory lane as we look back at what all used to go into building a business. Remember how making and collecting payments was all done via paper or hand-to-hand exchanges? How about marketing and advertising when everything was in print or broadcast and cost a fortune? And would you ever start a business without spending weeks on developing a business plan? So much has changed in how businesses are built and maintained today. And it can be difficult for us to adapt to all the new - dare we say better? - approaches to business building when we've had decades to rely on what was available in the past. Shift forward with us as Steve helps address our blind spots of how we can adapt business practices of then to work in our business building now. In the infamous words of Aladdin in Disney's movie of the same name, "Do you trust me?" Jasmine's reaction is a very uncertain "yes," and that pretty much sums up this week's discussion in the Grey Matters podcast. Whether you're venturing into a chat room or listening to this podcast religiously (we certainly hope you are!) or connecting with your business customers, trust these days is at the heart of every interaction we have. And it's no wonder. According to Edelman's Trust Barometer (polling respondents in 28 countries), we have been in a trust bankruptcy of late which has thrown the world for a loop. Who can you trust? Who should you trust? And, more to the point, who are you trusting - or mistrusting - right now? In this episode, Steve and Rachel chat about: the shiny new penny that is Clubhouse on iOS devices how audio/voice is ushering us all into a new frontier of trust ways we as business professionals can make the most of today's trust deficiencies It's a great episode. What's the difference between the "gig economy" and having a "side hustle?" We define these two aspects of Work 2.0 in this episode of Grey Matters. It's easy to confuse phrases we hear today describing work that isn't mainstream or full-time. We hear about the "gig economy" (on-demand talent and skill) and the "side hustle" (work geared for upward growth), and both sound appealing when we're faced with unemployment or underemployment. As we look deeper at these to options, there are things we should take into account: Is either a gig or a side hustle a viable solution for a work force that is being aged out of mainstream employment? The marketplace's view of older professionals and skilled workers has skewed to realm of being expendable, regardless of years of experience we offer. Stepping into a side gig or hustle isn't as easy as flipping a switch. Networking, personal branding, and even marketing can mean either success or squandered effort. What is required of us if we anticipate needing to try a gig or side hustle? Oh, and if you haven't heard, Apple has apparently thrown down the gauntlet against Facebook and other digital advertising giants with the update to iOS14: a pop-up prompt for Apple devices that ask the user if they agree to allow their activity to be tracked by Facebook. What will this mean for ads and privacy today as we have come to know them? We also welcome a new addition to the podcast: producer Rachel Moore joins the discussion with Steve to bring the GenX perspective into Grey Matters. Video is the most persuasive and influential media, so much more so when it is personalized Using video for conversation, and conversion! We tend to think of video in a rather grand sense. TV YouTube think about all the ways we use it. Tutorials Entertainment News and information Ironically, the most effective mass media platform is also incredibly effective in a one on one intimate application. Without fail, we are always competing for eyeballs. Success with video is usually tied to how many people watch the video. And the more people, the better the video! but a video is an amazing asset for far more intimate communications. Stop believing the lies about who you are, so you can become who you are meant to be, you are just an F-word away from the life you want, the marriage you want, the family that you want is going to be fueled by the business and life you build. Join me, be a soul rich woman. Alone we are strong, together we are unstoppable! Welcome to the show.Hello and welcome to today's episode. Are you about to launch yourself? Your business online? And want to make sure that it's a huge success? Now, in this episode, I'm gonna share with you why giving value like crazy is not undervaluing your knowledge.I believe there is so much power in sharing your knowledge on your story because first and foremost, there's no right and wrong in sharing your experiences, your knowledge and your story because when you can be vulnerable and open about the everyday courage that you have shown, there will be someone who can gain strength and hope from your truth. So, the word that I want to empower you today is the word “consistency”. So, first and foremost, when I started Soul Rich Woman many many years ago in twenty fifteen, I was a “nobody”, meaning that I was trying to go online, which I did go online in twenty thirteen but when I pivoted my direction because I knew that Soul Rich Woman will be my calling and I was based in Indonesia during that time, so I only with, I only had a webcam and internet and I gave myself an opportunity to turn on this thing called a “Google Hangouts” and that was back then in those days, and so, every single Wednesday, I went on live on a Webinar for almost two hours every week, it's called ‘Webinar Wednesday” and every single week, I was on Wednesday live until one whole year was up. At the beginning, nobody came to watch, nobody, zero because nobody knew I was running a webinar. Number two, nobody knew I was giving value. Number three, I wasn't promoting it at all, I was just like “Okay, I just do this online thing. I just launch this online thing. Hoping that people will show up like that but the answer is “no”, it will not happen, we need to drive traffic to where our online launch is gonna be, we need to build up this momentum, we need to build up this consistency so that people will notice us. So what they are doing? I started doing this small pieces of value on my social media, when I gave away three seconds to one-minute audio content and video content away for free and I also do live streaming, short live streams to kind of get attention and get women to be engaged with me and then eventually building up the momentum and consistency, to build up the norm like trust score which eventually they came to my webinar and started hanging out with me every single Wednesday at nine pm on the “Webinar Wednesday”, and because they gain so much value, they invited other friends to join in the webinar for free. It was all about giving value, and giving value like crazy, like I said, is not undervaluing your knowledge because it's a weekly session where I'm teaching something generic, I'm teaching something specific, I'm teaching something to the point of what I want to say or talk about in the particular week. And if somebody needed to, let's say, or need help to look at their business, need help to look at their online launch, need help to bring their business online, it will be the targeted customized solution and it's not a generic kind of webinar because a generic webinar, I'm giving value, okay? I'm really teaching and people are coming in, women are coming in and listening and learning, writing down notes and thinking of how it's going to be applied to their businesses. So yes, giving value like crazy is not undervaluing your knowledge because when they need a specific application for their businesses, they will come knocking on your door. But first, why do you need to give value like crazy? First, it's because it's to build norms like trust score. Are you able to stand out in the sea of sameness? You look left, you look right, somebody's posting something. You look left, you look right, somebody's doing similar things to you. Then again, how are you standing out? How are you building up your attraction online that within three to seven seconds, people are able to trust you, know you, and like you enough to even click on the button and say “Yes, here's my email address” “Yes, this is my phone number. Please take it and tell me how you can help me with your webinar?” and on the webinar, on the free online content, either be your life live steam or your webinar, you are able to give such value that able to help them to go to the next level. So, what are you doing today that is really giving value? Because of this steps I took, I grew Soul Rich Woman from zero to ten to first one hundred, to my first one thousand members online, to seven thousand members, to hundred thousand members, to now, more than two thousand members online.
