You are the gatekeeper of your home, which means you can make intentional choices about the products you use and what ingredients you allow in your house. But learning to choose cleaner products can quickly lead to a perfectionistic mindset and high stress when you leave no room for compromise. You can feel like you have to change everything all at once, or you can't enjoy certain things you used to (like getting your nails done at the salon). So what does it look like to take a toxin-freeish approach to choosing safer products? What would it look like if you took intentional steps to choose better ingredients, but also gave yourself grace to enjoy less healthy options? In this episode, Jordan talks with Wendy Kathryn (AKA wendy_toxinfreeish), a former environmental lawyer turned clean living coach. Together, they talk about how to choose safer products without trying to pursue perfection.Tune in to learn:The importance of having a grace-based approach to choosing cleaner products Why cleaner products are often more expensive than conventional alternativesHow small amounts of toxins and low-level exposure in products add up and impact your healthHow to understand class-action lawsuits against brands and productsThe limitations of ingredient apps like Think Dirty and EWGWhat ingredients to look for on a labelWhat greenwashing is and how to identify itWant to dig deeper into this episode? Feeling stuck in a cycle of unhealthy habits? Listen to this episode as Erik Cabral interviews functional medicine practitioner Joya Van Der Laan. Joya shares practical ways to break free through small, sustainable changes. She takes a whole-body approach to common issues beyond just covering symptoms. Discover how to support your wellbeing through nutrition, exercise, sleep and reducing toxins. Joya even recommends apps to check food safety before grocery shopping. This episode brings some empowering tips to nourish your amazing system from the inside out -– and start getting motivated to feel your very best! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Functional medicine vs symptom treatment Questioning mainstream beliefs & study funding Breaking unhealthy habits through small changes Toxic chemicals & safer alternatives Apps for checking food toxicity Exercise, sleep, & nutrition for aging Episode Highlights: [00:56] What is Functional Medicine? Functional medicine is all about finding what's really causing your health issues instead of just covering up symptoms. It digs deeper than surface level to see what's actually going on inside your body rather than just treating what you can see. Providers want to get to the why instead of just the what. They take a whole-picture look, like how your nutrition, stress, sleep and other lifestyle stuff might be affecting you. Then they help even things out so your body can do its thing in the best way. [20:14] A Holistic Approach to Common Health Issues Joya takes a holistic view with common issues like insomnia, headaches, and menopause changes. Instead of just masking symptoms, she uses thorough testing to find root causes like nutritional gaps or hormone imbalances. This lets Joya address health issues at the core through personalized lifestyle and eating plans. She doesn't just cover up what's happening but gets to the bottom of it. [25:01] A COVID Spark for Questioning Old Ways Joya discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some folks to double down in fully trusting mainstream views. But for others with inquisitive minds, it sparked questions about things like the government's true aims and Big Pharma's role. People open to rethinking issues started connecting more dots. This "mind-opening" led some down the path of checking out alternative approaches like functional medicine. [35:48] Check Your Products the Easy Way Joya talks about how apps like EWG Clean Living and Think Dirty can help folks out. You can scan barcodes right in the store to see if products got any nasty chemicals or hormone messing stuff. She recommends scanning beauty and cleaning items to find better options. By taking a couple extra minutes to scan, you can shop smarter for your wellbeing. Ingredient apps seem like a miracle no-brainer in today's world where toxins are hiding nearly everywhere. You're telling me I can simply pull up an app, search what I want and immediately get a 'yes' or 'no'? Clean? Not clean? Sign me up! Or...not. Here's the thing - I love what these apps stand for and the direction they're taking consumers. But, unfortunately it's not so cut and dry and these apps aren't as accurate as you think. I'm giving 5 reasons (using examples) to use these apps with caution. At the end of the day, I want all of you to feel empowered enough to make your own judgements about the products in your house. Relying on an app to give you the green light means you are relying on whether the creators of the app think something is safe or not. That's exactly why 'Toxin Free in 3', exists! Together, we'll go through the 25 ingredients to avoid and why, all while crafting a personalized standard of 'clean'. We're continuing the New Year's thing this week. Today we'll be focusing on our outer environment, specifically the health of our home. My guest, Ryan Blaser is an electrical engineer, certified building biologist, environmental consultant, and electromagnetic radiation specialist. Combining his extensive technical and environmental background, he founded my favorite company I think I've ever found, called Test My Home. Ryan is a deep well of knowledge in a bunch of high-interest areas for me, and hopefully, for you. His team takes scientific measurements with the latest in advanced technology and uses calibrated meters to detect toxic exposures in the built environment. And that, you guys, is exactly what he and his team did for this interview. They went through every nook and cranny of our home. Then, we discussed not only what they found, but also his entire protocol in detail. You can also hire Ryan's team to do the same damn thing in your home. To do so, visit lukestorey.com/hometesting and use the code LUKE for $400 off! Don't miss the follow-up bonus video, on YouTube, where Ryan and I discuss the findings of today's tests, what mitigation measures I've already put in place, and which are next up. This week, Kelly's chatting to Lily Tse, founder and CEO of Think Dirty, the app that makes it easy to identify and learn about potentially toxic ingredients in cosmetic and personal care products. After her mum developed breast cancer, Lily embarked on a personal journey to break the myths peddled by the beauty industry, identifying ingredients that have a detrimental impact on consumers' health. Lily identified that a plethora of beauty products contain a toxic hormone- disrupting chemical, which has been recognised as a possible cause of breast cancer. Although many products available today are marketed as organic, often sold to consumers with claims of being natural and healthier for you, Lily found that there is little to no transparency in how the products are labelled. Toxic and possibly harmful chemicals aren't highlighted in an accessible way that consumers can understand, which means it's incredibly difficult to know whether the products you are using are dangerous or not – well, that was before Think Dirty.Lily's revolutionary mobile app Think Dirty, coined the Shazam of the cosmetic industry, allows consumers to scan the barcodes of products before they have even bought them, to get a break down of what's in them, and rates the products on the Dirty Metre. Think Dirty also has an extensive data base of products which users can browse through, so when shopping they know which products are better for their health, and safer to use.Think Dirty really is bringing about a consumer revolution for safer products, and is a catalyst for change in the cosmetic industry.Episode talking points...02:13- The Shazam of the cosmetic industry!03:24 – Lily tells us how she came up the idea of Think Dirty...07:46 – The reaction of the cosmetic industry...09:09 – Think Dirty is facilitating change within the beauty industry!10:40 – The Dirty Metre Rating...13:20 – Think Dirty is inspiring people and businesses, including Fran Beer CEO and founder of The Beeswax Wrap Co!17:06 – The irony is...19:52 – You're a woman in tech!Check out the Think Dirty website to find out more about the app.https://thinkdirtyapp.com/Find the latest Tea with the Changemakers content below.https://social-change.co.uk/tea-with-the-changemakers Cup only half full? In Part 2 of our mini-series on toxic chemicals in cleaning products, we focus on the efforts of organizers, domestic workers and scientists to strive towards safe and healthy working conditions, as well as job security and benefits for those in the cleaning work sector. We speak with an organizer with the National Domestic Worker's Alliance, a chemical engineer working to ensure that safer chemicals are used in consumer products, and a founder of a worker-owned cleaning coop. All of these solutions combined are helping to ensure that domestic workers are respected and treated with dignity, have safe working conditions, and have a path to build economic security for themselves and their families. Sarah is one of my best friends + she opens her heart today to share about her healing journey with her chronic illness. It has been 7 years since she's had an autoimmune disease, numerous parasites + chronic viral infections. She almost had to drop out of college, her hair was falling out, her periods were extremely painful + had tons of symptoms. She went to over 10 doctors and got heaps of blood tests that keep saying how she was healthy, but her symptoms were worsening. She saw how antibiotics had such a harsh impact on her body + often served as a quick fix, but destroyed her gut + symptoms kept returning. She decided to try the natural route and finally got answers + results. Switching to non-toxic products helps improve your overall health. Lots of products approved by the FDA are banned in other countries. When you start the natural healing it might get worse before it gets better. It's short-term pain for long-term pleasure.
