Why You Should Listen:  In this episode, you will learn about the role of Actinobacteria and Endotoxins in CIRS. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker.  Ritchie Shoemaker, MD is a recognized leader in patient care, research, and an education pioneer in the field of biotoxin related illness.  While illness acquired following exposure to the interior environment of water-damaged buildings (WDB) comprises the bulk of Dr. Shoemaker's daily practice, other illnesses caused by exposure to biologically-produced toxins are quite similar in their “final common pathway.”  What this means is that while the illness might begin acutely with exposure to fungi, spirochetes, apicomplexans, dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria, for example, in its chronic form, each of these illnesses has similar symptoms, lab findings, and Visual Contrast Sensitivity (VCS) findings.  Taken together the inflammatory illness from each of these diverse sources is known as  Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. Key Takeaways: Is CIRS generally caused by a single trigger or multiple triggers? What HLA-DR types may be susceptible to Actinobacteria or endotoxins? How does one determine when MARCoNS are making polycyclic ethers? What is the latest on biotoxin illness testing through HumanBiomics? Is it the Actinobacteria or a toxin produced by the bacteria that leads to illness? Is it best to start by testing the environment or by testing the person? Are some Actinobacteria a healthy part of our microbiome? What criteria are used to evaluate Actinobacteria testing? Is the solution to Actinobacteria a traditional remediation? How do people acquire skin Actinobacteria? How are skin Actinobacteria reduced over time? Are Actinobacteria in the sinuses a factor? How are Actinobacteria in the oral cavity addressed? How do endotoxins enter the body? Can endotoxin production be from endogenous bacteria? What is the best way to establish CIRS causation? What is the role of beta glucans in CIRS? Join the High Performance Health Collective - https://angelafosterperformance.com/hph-collective/  Angela is joined by John Lieurance to talk about the critical role of mitochondria in our health, explaining how these cellular structures convert glucose and oxygen into ATP, the energy currency of the body. The discussion highlights the importance of mitochondrial efficiency, linking it to overall health and the aging process KEY TAKEAWAYS Mitochondria are essential for energy production in the body, converting glucose and oxygen into ATP, which serves as the energy currency for cellular functions. The efficiency of this process is crucial for overall health. As individuals age, mitochondrial efficiency tends to decline, leading to reduced energy production and increased oxidative stress, which is linked to various diseases and the aging process. Infection and toxicity are primary stressors that negatively impact mitochondrial health. Addressing these factors is vital for maintaining energy levels and overall well-being. The health of the body's "doorways" (nasal passage, mouth, and colon) is critical in preventing infections and managing inflammation. Keeping these areas healthy can significantly improve inflammation levels in the body. BEST MOMENTS "In essence, your body uses glucose and oxygen, and this gets combined in a structure called a mitochondria." "When we run out of energy, we don't have the ability to express health, and then disease presents itself based on certain genetics and certain environmental triggers." "There's two primary stressors that generally will have a negative impact on our health and our life force. And that's going to be infection and toxicity." "Endotoxins are incredibly inflammatory, and so the primary three doorways are the nasal passage, the mouth, and the mucosa." Why You Should Listen:  In this episode, you will learn about the root causes of CIRS including Actinos and endotoxins. About My Guests: My guest for this episode is Dr. Eric Dorninger.  Eric Dorninger ND, LAc is a Registered Naturopathic Doctor and Licensed Acupuncturist. He graduated from Bastyr University, the leading accredited university for science-based natural medicine.  Prior to medical school, he received his B.A. in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1997. During this time he also finished his E.M.T. (Emergency Medical Technician) training and volunteered at Porter Care Hospice in Denver. This dual exposure of medical perspectives laid down the roots for Dr. Dorninger's integrated approach to diagnosis, treatment, and healing.  Following undergrad, Dr. Dorninger served as an EMT for the Cranford First Aid Squad in Cranford, NJ. He then completed his doctorate in naturopathic medicine and his master's degree in acupuncture at Bastyr University in 2003, after which he returned to Boulder, Colorado to complete a 2-year residency in naturopathic primary care.  In 2005, Dr. Dorninger founded Roots and Branches Integrative Health Care, a clinic dedicated to “Mystery Illness” where he focuses on elucidating the underlying causes of unrelenting chronic illness.  Dr. Dorninger is not concerned with what you have as much as he is with why you have it. He has dedicated his professional life to a deeper understanding of differential diagnosis based in the tradition of “Remove Obstacles to Cure.”  After the 2013 floods in Boulder, Dr. Dorninger noticed that patients who were initially getting better suddenly regressed. Moreover, patients he was struggling to diagnose got worse.  Fortunately, he was guided to the honest, data-driven, peer-reviewed, reproducible published work of Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker on mold and biotoxin illness. In 2014 Dr. Dorninger signed on for his Shoemaker certification training.  Dr. Dorninger is a certified Shoemaker practitioner and remains true to the Shoemaker protocol.  According to Dorninger, diagnosing underlying causes and facilitating accurate treatment plans is a grind. At Roots and Branches, we embrace the grind.  In addition to private practice, Dr. Dorninger teaches functional medicine for Apex Energetics, practices Jiu-Jitsu, skis, and enjoys watching his biotoxin-genetically susceptible kids thrive post chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) treatment. Key Takeaways: What are the root causes of CIRS? What is the difference between endotoxins and lipopolysaccharides? Do Actinos or endotoxins trigger MCAS? Should Actino and endotoxin testing always be done along with the ERMI? Is there still a place for HLA-DR? What has GENIE revealed about patients with CIRS? How should Actino and endotoxin testing be evaluated? Are soil habitat Actinos a contributor to CIRS? What is the role of Actinos on the skin? What drainpipe maintenance should be considered to reduce exposure to Actinos? What steps should be taken to optimize our sleep location? Do air filters play a role in reducing Actinos and endotoxins? What is the role of Cholestyramine in dealing with Actinos and endotoxins? Can Actinos be found in the blood? Might there be a place for antimicrobial interventions in dealing with Actinos? Dr. John Lieurance, Naturopath and Chiropractic Neurologist, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom podcast, episode 591, to share how he treats celebrities to help them breathe well, which biohacking products you should be using every day, how endotoxins cause inflammation in the body, and why suppositories are more effective than IV. "Everything stops working properly when you have too much inflammation in the body. You have areas that microbes can live and exist and secrete their excrement, right. Their toxic waste. This is called an endotoxin. And these endotoxins are literally at the root of all diseases. The 3 primary doorways are the nasal passage, the oral, the mouth, and the colon." - Dr. John Lieurance 10% Off MitoZen 10% OFF | CODE: “WELLNESSFORCE” MitoZen Scientific offers the most Advanced Natural Medicine and healing through detoxification. We store the short-term memory. If we don't transfer the short-term memory to our upper cortex and integrate it, then we can't make sense of what's happening in the now as it relates to what's happened in the past to formulate in context our life, our mission, and our relationships." - Dr. John Lieurance Melatonin: The Safest Molecule "I would challenge anybody to bring me a molecule that has more testing showing safety than melatonin. There isn't. Every cell in your body makes it. We need melatonin to survive." - Dr. John Lieurance Dura Mater "The cranium is made up of separate bones which come together in unique ways to facilitate a motion called cranial rhythm. But there's a connective tissue layer just inside of the bones called the dura mater (tough mother). It's got 2000 pounds per square inch of tensile strength. It's very, very durable. And what happens when mothers are overly protective? The kid doesn't get to explore the environment and doesn't learn. The same thing happens with the neurological system when you have this bound connective tissue. It disrupts the flexibility, but it also causes the skull to be contracted and pulled into a collapsed position." - Dr. John Lieurance Live Life Well from Sunrise to Sunset Save 20% with code "WELLNESSFORCE" on everyone's favorite Superfoods brand, ORGANIFI, including their Sunrise to Sunset Bundle and their Women's Power Stack that includes HARMONY + GLOW for true hormonal balance and great health radiating through your beautiful skin. But compared to surgery or extensive drug regimens with debilitating side effects, the effort is decidedly worth it. Here to make things a bit easier, Dr. Sunil Pai presents a ten-step guide to help you prevent and treat disease through diet and lifestyle changes, as well as through the use of natural anti-inflammatories. With extensive information on the production of food, pharmaceuticals, and dietary supplements, this remarkable resource pulls back the veil on what's really in the foods and products you consume daily—and how they're affecting your health. All too often, conventional health care simply manages diseases rather than actually resolving them. By understanding that inflammation is the underlying trigger mechanism to all ailments, you can learn to prevent, reverse, and treat most chronic illnesses—including cancer—by applying integrative medicine's natural, evidence-based solutions. Informative, educational, and enlightening, this book will help you understand the truth and motivate you to start taking back your health! Dr. Pai also became one of the first Board Certified doctors in Holistic Integrative Medicine in the United States and he specializes in the health benefits of plant-based diets and the use of natural anti-inflammatories for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Dr. Pai is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and conducts seminars and workshops on a variety of health conditions. Dr. Pai lectures at national conferences and is actively publishing in the field of Integrative Medicine. Due to his success with cancer supportive therapies, Dr. Pai has been featured in many internet documentary series including and a variety of online health summits. He is sought out lecturer for speaking about the hidden truths within the food, pharmaceutical and dietary supplement industries. Dr. Pai consults with clinics in U.S., Curacao, Dubai, Thailand, India, Costa Rica and China on teaching his integrative medicine chronic disease and cancer supportive protocols. Dr. Pai's Integrative Medicine approach, evaluation, products and services are highly used by celebrities, actors, and musicians in the entertainment and music industries as well as professional athletes to improve and maintain their performance and longevity of their careers. Dr. Pai's hobbies include playing drums, guitar and music trivia and he thus he is known as the “RocDoc”. Two independent researchers have recently discovered that inflammation (which is occurring in a tumor in our bodies) is contributing to the tumor's growth. Does this mean that anti-inflammatory compounds can contribute to slowing or even stopping the growth of tumors? Well, that is exactly where the research is heading, and it looks promising. Today I look into the details of these two independent studies. The first comes from researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai hospital. The details that explain how cancer cells replicate uncontrollably and are enhanced by inflammation, can be found here.  The second article I discuss comes from Science Daily and can be found here. The research comes from the Brigham and women's Hospital cancer research labs, here in Boston. This study links the growth of colon cancer cells to a certain type of gram-negative bacteria that can grow in our gut. This bacteria is linked to our so-called Western diet, in particular to higher amounts of saturated fat from meats, especially processed meats. These bad bacteria can produce endotoxins, which is the theory behind why they enhance the growth of colon cancer. There was also a short nutrition facts video that talks about endotoxins as it relates to our food, and in particular, high and low-fiber foods. that video can be found here.    I now have a Google number for texting me with questions, requests for recipes, and suggestions for future episodes. It's 978-712-9556. I'm usually online between 7 PM and 8 PM ET most evenings if you want to catch me live. He has promised to educate us today about spore based probiotics in a way that is easy to understand. rIn this episode of the Clean Eating for Women podcast, we talk about:   Kiran gives us a probiotic overview We learn what spore based probiotics are 80% of our immune system exists in our gut Some highlights of this episode on Probiotics for Healing with Just Thrive Microbiologist Kiran Krishnan: Kiran's super power is that he is a nerd that can talk to humans. He is going to explain some complicated topics in an easy to understand and "digestible" way. I heard Kiran on another podcast and knew he would be a great guest for the show. [01:13] Probiotics were first invented by Elie Metchnikoff. He put forth the idea that illness comes from an overabundance of bad bacteria. Auto intoxication. Using good bacteria to counteract bad bacteria. [02:11] A probiotic should be a live microorganism. It's a bacteria of some sort that can get into your system and make significant and valuable changes to the rest of the population in your digestive system and immune system. [03:17] If we have the right type of bacteria in our gut, we can create a significant amount of value in the way our body and our immune system functions. A probiotic is a good bacteria that goes to work for you fixing damage that we have done to our microbiome. [04:08] Things that can damage our microbiome can be too much sugar or taking antibiotics. We are a collection of thousands of organisms that work together as a whole. Our modern environment disrupts the cycle. Preservatives, pesticides, herbicides, glyphosate, chlorine, fluoride, and 80% of our personal care products destroy our bodies bacterial cultures. [04:52] Spore based probiotics form an endospore to protect themselves. They can survive in stomach acid. Then in the gut, they recondition the environment. They find bad bacteria and kill them off and feed the good bacteria through prebiotic foods. [11:33] Leaky gut is what is driving chronic inflammation that is driving chronic disease. Endotoxins leak through the intestinal lining and get into your bloodstream. This sets off inflammation and starts the process of disease. Obesity, brain fog, anxiety, depression, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cancer, and autoimmune diseases are all caused by toxins leaking from the gut. [19:42] Spore based probiotics are able to stop leaky gut in 30 days. It can help heal and reverse the entire condition. Metabolic endotoxemia is the process of digestion increasing intestinal leakiness. [25:59] The vast majority of the body can heal if we put it in a healing state. We can't be in a healing state with a continuous flood of toxins and inflammation just from eating food. www.pureenergypdx.com Pure Energy Wellness http://learntruehealth.com/pure-energy Pure energy is something most of us strive to have.  To be able to do the things we need to do every day, having pure energy makes us more productive.  But the problem is, most of us are clueless on how to have pure energy. That’s why we’re so lucky to have Holistic Health Coach Allison Pelot to show us how to reach optimal health. Life As A Gymnast Allison Pelot was a former gymnast who had a lucrative career as an athlete for 20 years. She was very conscious on her physical training but put little emphasis on proper nutrition. It was only when she became a mother when she learned how food could give pure energy. “I’m 45 years old now and had kids during my late 20s. Surprisingly, I can’t believe no one teaches athletes how to eat well,” shares Allison Pelot. “My son had issues with immunity, and I had severe digestive issues. Looking back, I was pretty malnourished.”  Allison Pelot also recalls that doctors couldn’t do much. In fact, they made things worse. After doing some research, she decided to go on a gluten-free diet with her son.  Incorporating organic food into their diet, Allison Pelot started noticing changes. Mission To Help Others According to Allison Pelot, pure energy sparks transformation. Because she found the best way on how to have pure energy, that drove Allison Pelot’s desire to help other people. “I became so passionate and started teaching people. Then I got into personal training again after having kids,” Allison Pelot said. “As I got older, I noticed changes. People particularly women are not aware of how the body changes over time and how we need good nutrition to keep all that in balance.”  Stand On Vaccines In episode 224 of Learn True Health, I interviewed Dr. Paul Thomas who was an advocate of eating real food and taking vitamins.  He has been in practice for 30 years and has approximately treated 13,000 kids. Allison Pelot had a harrowing experience with vaccines when her son was younger. According to Allison Pelot, her son was always in a bad mood, crying all the time, and had digestive issues. Allison Pelot’s son was 18 months old when he was given the controversial MMR vaccine. As soon as they got home, her son threw up, developed diarrhea and fever all at once. By the third day, Allison Pelot’s son seemed to get better. However, while Allison Pelot was out, her babysitter called to tell her that her son wasn’t breathing. Emergency medics came and apparently, Allison Pelot’s son had a seizure. Allison Pelot’s son had two more seizures when they got to the hospital. Doctors did several tests and initially speculated that the child had epilepsy. Long story short, Allison Pelot felt that the whole thing was a massive cover-up. “That opened my eyes. If people feel like they want to do a vaccine for their child, that is their decision. I’m just sharing my story, and we decided not to do vaccine anymore. The risk was too much,” said Allison Pelot.  She adds, “Fast forward when he was ten years old; he started having seizures at night. It went on for two to three years. And then it finally stopped.” Allison Pelot breastfed her son part-time, then gave him formula and some supplements. But when he started to eat real food, like fruits and vegetables, things got better. Going Gluten-Free Allison Pelot also recommends going gluten-free. According to her, estrogen is a stress hormone which apparently makes our gut more sensitive to gluten. So if you have higher levels of serotonin and estrogen, it is going to make you more sensitive to gluten. “But the most important part of immunity is keeping your blood sugar regular. If you let your energy reserves get too low, you’ll have nothing left for your innate immune system to work,” Allison Pelot said. Allison Pelot also says to make an effort to eliminate endotoxins in the gut. It will be helpful in increasing your natural immunity as well as aid in your metabolism. “Endotoxins is anything that’s going to cause harm to the body, like estrogen if it continues to recirculate or any harmful bacteria,” Allison Pelot said. “Anything that is going to help your metabolism is going to help your immunity. They go hand in hand.” Getting Into Yoga We have heard many benefits of yoga and Allison Pelot is one of them. She says yoga helps one maintain flexibility, especially when we get older. Yoga primarily teaches you how you move on the floor. It also calms the nervous system. “Not everyone can go to the gym. So work movement into your day. Take a walk. It starts from there, and it can be so beneficial for every aspect,” said Allison Pelot.  Recommended Superfoods Allison Pelot says eating superfoods is excellent for hormonal balance and getting the immunity up. For women, in particular, you’ll have less estrogen which is essential. Superfoods also helps women produce more progesterone in the body. “You’ll have more strength and will feel better in general. Women tend to have more fat as they age,” explains Allison Pelot. “The best food is milk or dairy. Start with cheese. It is a great source of protein especially for those who can’t digest meat.” Allison Pelot also says we need lots of calcium in our body. And dairy helps build muscle and aids in recovery. I was honestly surprised that Allison Pelot recommended dairy. My whole family is dairy-free, but we can handle ghee or small amounts of goat’s milk. It’s a big difference from cow to human dairy or breastmilk. I remember my interview with Joshua Rosenthal, the creator of Institute for Integrative Nutrition. He’s a vegan, but added dairy to his diet and felt terrific. So ultimately, it depends on what body type you are. No one diet is good for everyone. To figure what works for you, try a gluten-free diet for a month and see how it feels. “First check if you are lactose-intolerant or you have high cortisol levels. A lot of times, people are sensitive to what they add to milk. There are plenty of options on what kind of milk you can have,” said Allison Pelot. Fruits And Vegetables Allison Pelot recommends eating tropical fruits because it has a bit of saturated fat. It is also high in potassium and as well as other minerals. Apparently, the sugar from tropical fruits comes with a lot of nutrients.  “Pineapple, papaya, oranges, melons, kiwi are great. Not so much for mangoes because it is part of the poison oaks family. Berries are fine, but it does not produce enough energy and nutrients,” explains Allison Pelot. “Cook apples and pears to be able to digest it easier.  She adds, “Bone broth, gelatin, shellfish are also good healing foods for the gut. Also consume liver once a week to get a good amount of  vitamin A.” In selecting what food to eat, Allison Pelot says it is best to have a plan of recovery. Carrots, in particular, aids digestion. It also helps help take out the excess estrogen. Apparently, carrots have anti-fungal properties. So, if you eat it raw, it can suck out the endotoxins in the gut like a natural antibiotic. Carrots do not cost much, and it is easy to digest aside from being an excellent digestive aid. Allison Pelot however, cautions against juicing carrots. The dosage of keratin is high, and there is no more fiber once carrots are made into juice. Fiber is super important in the mix because we need fiber to pull out endotoxins. Think Positive Allison Pelot also stresses the importance of getting into a positive mindset. It can make all the difference in the world. She advises that we should likewise trust our body’s healing abilities. Building our body is the first step to optimal health.  “Focus on things you care a lot about or things that give you joy. Part of the reason why Hawaii is so healing for people is because of the sun. Dark days are stressful on the body. So nourish yourself during stressful times,” Allison Pelot said.  Integrate Yourself Podcast Allison Pelot has a fantastic podcast where she invites experts to speak about health and wellness. It has been quite a journey for Allison Pelot because she affirms learning a lot in every episode. “I’m surprised with what I learn. Maddy Moon’s interview stuck with me because of how she talked about the beginner’s mindset. It’s about opening up to listen to someone,” shares Allison Pelot. “The only way we’re going actually to be able to connect with each other is if we have a beginner’s mindset. Accept that we don’t know everything.” Coaching Services And Other Resources Allison Pelot provides coaching services.  She also has personal training, small group fitness, nutrition coaching, and workshops. Those who want a more in-depth wellness program can sign up for Allison Pelot’s retreat in Oregon which is scheduled this spring. She is also currently working on a book and an online course about digestion for hormonal balance. Bio Allison Pelot started out as a competitive gymnast from age 5 to 21 years and later graduated with a Degree in Exercise Science from Georgia State University. Her health issues created a passion for learning more about holistic health. This led Allison Pelot to obtain certifications in holistic nutrition and lifestyle coaching and exercise coaching from the CHEK Institute in San Diego, CA.  Allison Pelot has been coaching people in holistic nutrition and fitness for almost 20 years now. She has a practice in Portland Oregon and a health Podcast called Integrate Yourself. Ep. 235: Denise Minger and Extreme Diets In this episode, Stacy and Sarah invite Denise Minger, author of Death By Food Pyramid, on to talk about research she did on extremely high carb, extremely low fat diets and why they seem to help heal people with serious disease, contrary to conventional paleo wisdom. Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 235: Denise Minger and Extreme Diets Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Our guest is Denise Minger of DeniseMinger.com! She's here to answer a specific question we received about a talk she did at AHS '14! He book Death By Food Pyramid is one of Sarah's favorites! See the podcast we did with her about it here. Question from Valerie: "first of all I'd like to thank you for what you're doing. Your show always puts a smile on my face and I am afraid of the day I will have caught up with all past episodes and will actually have to wait a week for the next one to come out. So I was ordering my InstantPot the other day when Amazon recommend I shall buy the book "The Starch Solution" by John McDougall. I got curious about it and did some research and it seems the diet is a paleo person's worst nightmare: Based solely on starches, whole grains, legumes, no fats allowed whatsoever, zero animal products. It promises weight loss (not hard to imagine, being on a totally bland diet), but also permanent reversal (as in healing) of diabetes and all sorts of health benefits. I also found a talk by Denise Minger ('lessons from the vegans', I think you might actually have mentioned it sometime) who confirms these findings. What's puzzling me is all the reports of people doing that diet talking about improved digestion, no blood sugar spikes (!) and I also found quite a few reports from Crohn's patients apparently being cured by it, although this is totally counter intuitive for anyone that has ever been on SCD or paleo. Can you think of any explanation for these miraculous cures?" Denise posted a post about this topic here. A study by Walter Kempner found that a super high sugar, super low fat diet had benefits for people with diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease and other conditions. He was trying to help people with kidney failure. 96% carbohydrate and mostly white sugar, about 2000 calories. What came out of this came to be known as the Rice Diet Look at the end of these notes for OFFICIAL Denise Minger meme images. These benefit lasted even after they returned to a normal diet. Roy Swank found that people in mountains of Norway were eating a lot of land animal fats and had a relatively high incidence of multiple sclerosis while people eating mostly fish on the coast had a low incidence of MS. He put people with MS on a very low saturated fat diet for decades and found a lot of success with the people who stuck the closest to his diet. This doesn't seem to jibe with what we know of MS, particularly compared with people like Terry Wahls who eat much more fat. Nathan Pritikin worked on a plant-based, super low fat diet to reverse heart disease. With all this very thorough research that seems contradictory to the paleo model, it seemed to Denise like she needed to revise what she believed was true. Denise initially thought it was the low processed foods component with mainly whole foods focus that was the cause. But obviously the Kempner mostly refined sugar diet that doesn't apply. But it seems like these extreme diets have evidence that they can help you repair when you're sick, but not necessarily to prevent the disease in the first place! Denise found that most low fat diets call for 30% of calories from fat, while these extreme diets are under 10%. The really problematic diets are the refined grain diets with that 30% or more calories from fat that have the most disease promoting properties. Denise believes that this is because of the gut and how chylomicrons and endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides) work on these diets. Endotoxins are linked to a lot of modern diseases and are present the most in high saturated fat diets. Chylomicrons are lipoproteins in the gut that transport fat out to the rest of the body, but they will also bring endotoxins along with them. To reduce endotoxins in the blood, you can either eat this super low fat diet, or you can promote a healthy gut that doesn't produce a lot of endotoxins to begin with. For diabetes, saturated fat increases the secretion of insulin. This is why a sugar diet could improve diabetes. There could be a fat/carbohydrate interaction in some people that may make them more susceptible to blood sugar issues. It seems that these plant based diets are so adamant about super low fat: if you even eat a moderate amount of fat, the therapeutic effect goes away! Denise concludes that healthy people without these conditions shouldn't be worried about her research because these diets are for therapeutic effect and don't have evidence that they benefit people trying to prevent disease. Endotoxin is created by the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria. Gram-negative bacteria are sensitive to the fiber intake of the diet. Jeff Leach of the Human Food Project studies the human gut microbiome. Read his post Going Feral: My One-Year Journey to Acquire the Healthiest Gut Microbiome in the World (You Heard Me!) to get the story of him testing his own gut microbiome and figuring out what variables helped improve it. Endotoxin is highly inflammatory. It's how we get lab rats to develop disease and it is the cause of sepsis. Thanks to Denise for coming on the show on short notice! Lauren Petersen, PhD, is a postdoctoral associate working for Dr. George Weinstock and investigating the microbiome. Our knowledge of the 100 trillion microorganisms that inhabit the human body is still very limited, but the advent of next-generation sequencing technology has allowed researchers to start understanding what kind of microorganisms inhabit the human body and identifying the types of genes these organisms carry. As part of the NIH-funded Human Microbiome Project, her lab is focused on developing and applying the latest technologies to characterize the microbiome and its impact on human health. One of her main projects is metatranscriptomic analysis whereby they are attempting to characterize gene expression of an entire community from human samples such as stool and saliva. Gaining information on what signals or environmental factors can trigger changes in global gene expression of an entire microbial community may provide us with the tools to better treat certain types of diseases in humans. Lauren is currently working on the Athlete Microbiome Project. By collecting stool and saliva samples from a cohort of highly fit professional cyclists, she will make an attempt to understand how their microbiomes may differ from those of the general population. The goal is to characterize the species present, the genes they carry, and how gene expression is modulated in athletes who push their bodies to the limit.
