On 20 January 1978, XTC released their debut album with its defiant cry of This Is Pop! In the first of a two-part conversation for What Do You Call That Noise? The XTC Podcast, five fans, journalists and photographers recall what it was like to witness XTC explode onto the scene with White Music. Tony Mitchell, editorial staffer on Sounds, followed XTC to Hamburg, Amsterdam and Japan. Photographer Jill Furmanovsky was on the same trip to Hamburg in 1978 and subsequent publicity sessions. Beverley Glick, who wrote for Sounds under the name of Betty Page, joined XTC in New York in 1980. Paul Burgess and Andy Poulton were at school at Headlands in Swindon, where the caretaker was Colin Moulding's dad. Music by Jon Bicknell. What Do You Call That Noise? Phil and Jake are joined by Marissa Puget to rank Princess of Pop Britney Spears, alternative milks, and leather jackets on the List of Every Damn Thing.Find Marissa on Instagram (@hooksforhands) and Twitter (@hooksforhands). Also check out her work at Raconteur, especially with Dance Cry Dance Records. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Happy birthday to Marissa's mom, Karen! That is, if you're reading this on the day the episode was released. If not, then either happy belated birthday, or happy early birthday for next year. You choose. This was the first joke Phil's son was able to pull off: "What's green and smells like blue paint? Green paint!" He's still working on our new favorite: "What's the secret to telling a good joke timing." Therapy in the future will be Phil's son going into a VR experience where a Pokemon-branded A.I. therapist goes through his father's social media and podcasts and then administers a virtual medication. Other pop stars discussed include Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Cher and Prince. We also talk about non-Pop musicians like Klaus Nomi, Bruce Springsteen. “Weird Al” Yankovic, Charli XCX, Hank Williams and the Ramones. We get into so many Britney songs: “...Baby One More Time”, “Gimme More”, “Work Bitch”, “Radar”, “Unusual You”, “Until the World Ends” (featuring Nikki Minaj & Ke$ha), “Oops I Did It Again”, “Toxic” and her rendition of Sonny & Cher's “The Beat Goes On”. Jake recommends this Mystery Show podcast episode about Britney (though he incorrectly attributes it to the podcast Invisibilia). Phil mentions the Netflix show This Is Pop. The third episode "Stockholm Syndrome" discusses Max Martin's team in Sweden, and one producer explains the piano-playing finger formation the he dubs “hit claw” (which was used to create "...Baby One More Time"). Here's the “Toxic” remix from the Promising Young Woman soundtrack, and here's the mash-up with the B-52s' “Love Shack”. Phil was familiar with Rolling Stone cover featuring Britney with a Teletubby, but had never noticed the Teletubby. The documentary about Britney's conservatorship (and the #freebritney movement) that we refer to is Framing Britney Spears. Here's Britney being interviewed by Michael Moore for Fahrenheit 9/11. We don't even mention that Dan Aykroyd plays Britney's character's dad in the movie Crossroads! Fear not, the saga of bread & butter pickles controversy does continue in this episode. Here's Britney & Justin Timberlake's denim outfits. Marrisa's right, kefir is very similar to yogurt. Other types of alternative milks discussed include almond milk, soy milk, oat milk and coconut milk. We talk about a lot of different iconic leather jacket looks, including those of Indiana Jones, Marlon Brando, Danny Zuko, Arthur Fonzerelli, Eddie Murphy, Ford Fairlane, Blade and The Matrix. We couldn't find any evidence of what Jake calls a “snowy river jacket” ever appearing in The Man from Snowy River. Banthas are the big hairy things in Star Wars that live on the desert planet of Tatooine (not the ice planet of Hoth). They stand in for either camels or buffalo. Dave returns this week to restore some order to the Bandwagon....yeah, no one is going to believe that. But you can believe that the Nerds go all-out with their discussion of a plethora of topics this week. They break down Episode 3 of Marvel's What If? series. This week's Episode focused in on a scenario where The Avengers never came to be and ended up being the favorite Episode of the series yet for a couple of the members of the panel. The guys also give their thoughts on Episode 5 of Netflix's This Is Pop! This Episode was all about Britpop but the guys seemed more interested in discussing what the show should have talked about, and not what it actually addressed. Then, the Nerds give a detailed breakdown of the biggest trailer of the year so far, the teaser for Spider-Man: No Way Home and the endless possibilities this movie might create. Potential delays, unfortunately, have to be discussed and with Shang-Chi premiering exclusively in theaters this weekend, is this latest installment to the MCU under even more pressure to deliver a big number? The Matrix 4 is going to be called Resurrections (really?) and Marvel is brining a new tactical RPG to video game systems everywhere next year. Were The Midnight Sons the best choice for this venture? The guys explore these topics and much more on a loaded Episode of BWN.@WrestlngRealist@AttitudeAgg@itsReyCash@PCTunney@therealcplatt@ChairshotMediaAbout Bandwagon NerdsJoin Patrick O'Dowd, David Ungar, PC Tunney and Rey Cash as they keep everyone up on all things nerd, and maybe add some new nerds along the way. With Patrick and Tunney on "assignment" this week, Dave & Rey call in the big guns....the one and only Christopher Platt and Dave's lovely wife Kayleen. The Nerds convene to break down Episode 3 of This Is Pop to explore the massive Swedish influence on pop music and to ponder how exactly The Backstreet Boys actually wanted it? From there, most of the Nerds watched the first Episode of Marvel's new series What If? The Nerds offer up their thoughts on that first Episode and how they liked Marvel's Multiversal approach to the new series. Doom Patrol Season 3 is coming. Are the Nerds excited? The Venom sequel got delayed. Are the Nerds nervous about additional delays? The Suicide Squad was a success among critics but not so much at the box office. Was it a failure? The Nerds offer up some thoughts as to some things they would like to be turned into a show on streaming services. And did Christopher Platt actually write a country song on the spot? You will have to tune in to find out. In this episode, Jason does 2 deep dives for Jax: FBOY Island and M. Night Shyamalan's new movie, Old. On this episode, we talk about how racism has played a role in both bringing music up while all tearing it down. W're doing a review an episode of “This Is Pop” from Netflix. The episode covers the rise and fall of Boys 2 Men. This episode helped open our eyes so much at just how upset we should be at boy bands. Boys 2 Men worked extremely hard to work their way to the top of multiple chart and as soon as the boy bands came in they stole the show and it was easier for them due to their privilege. Nick from 98 Degrees admitted to copying Boys 2 Men. We are charged and we need to give Boys 2 Men the credit they deserve. Go watch The Is Pop and listen to Boys 2 Men. Also if you have any corrections for us where we may have been wrong, let us know. We are always eager to grow. Let us know if you have any episode suggestions by emailing us at wineamilikethis@gmail.com or you can DM us @wineamilikethis on instagram. Our intro music was created by @oswaldex on instagram, if you have any music you want created he is very easy to work with and amazing!

T-Pain shared, “He was like, ‘I want to tell you something, man' … He sounded real concerned. He was like, ‘Man, you kinda f**ked up music.' I didn't understand. Usher was my friend,” “He was like, ‘Nah, man, you really f**ked up music for real singers… That's the very moment that started a four-year depression for me.” After the episode streamed in the U.S., many fans slammed Usher on social media – but T-Pain was quick to defend the singer. “Telling that story was in no way meant to disrespect that man,” he tweeted. In an interview with Billboard, Usher admitted “it was very hurtful to know that he had experienced that kind of hardship in life. I wouldn't wish that on any person.” He added: “Private conversations for me have always been intended to uplift. But when or if people get pieces of it, they can always have some other interpretation. “But we've spoken since and we're good.” https://www.iheartradio.ca/news/usher-reacts-to-t-pain-calling-him-out-1.15787379 Thanks to John R. On the topic of birthdays, when is the actual best time to be born and does anyone ever really care about your birthday? Really? We are talking about This Is Pop, the music documentary series currently streaming on Netflix. This is Pop uncover's the real stories behind your favorite pop songs and charts the impact of the festival scene, Auto-Tune, boy bands and more. Our guest is Eric Scwartz who is almost featured prominently — in Episode 2 — simply named Auto-Tune. In this episode the producers examine how Auto-Tune is embraced and mocked, and shifts the pitch of the pop charts and changed the game for artists such as Cher, T-Pain and Kanye West. One of the most creative and original comedians working today, Eric has earned the description, “everything there is to love about entertainment” (First Order Historians). GQ India names him one of “5 International Comics You Must Catch.” E! News Daily host Ryan Seacrest said Schwartz is “rocking the web” with “video that's got everyone Googling” and Forbes.com applauds him for having “a minor industry in pop music parodies.”A product of America's melting pot, Eric was raised on the outskirts of Los Angeles in a Jewish and Mexican family during the golden age of hip hop. His entertainment career began when he spent his Bar Mitzvah money on DJ gear and began entertaining at parties and school dances, and eventually became one of the most popular DJs at entertainment-industry events. Not content to only speak with his hands, Eric never hesitated at an opportunity to get on the mic and make the audience laugh. These would be the seeds to grow Eric's style of musical comedy, leading him to television appearances on Showtime, The Tonight Show, Comics Unleashed, BET and his one-hour special, “Surrender to the Blender,” on Hulu. A pioneer of viral video, Eric has racked up over 100 million views on his stand-up clips, music videos and sketches. He has created content for and with with Grammy-winner Jason Mraz, Jo Koy, Tiffany Haddish, Craig Robinson, Anjelah Johnson, Disney, Yahoo, and more.Eric is heard regularly as host and creator of Podcast: The Musical, where he conducts an interview and creates songs based on the conversation. He headlines across the country, in addition to opening for Jo Koy on his Just Kidding World Tour.Follow Eric on:Twitter:@ericschwartz Instagram: @eeeericschwartzFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.Privacy Policy and California Privacy Notice.

In this week's episode, Harper talks about her Difficult Women (working title), but she doesn't know yet how they'll get together. This book may also have brought her to take on a new (violent) hobby. About That Kiss is getting its final touches and will be out on 27 July. The editor loved it! And Harper reveals which book she'll work on when she's done with the difficult women. Our shout-out of the week is to the Flemish Government for their PSA with two middle-aged lesbians. In between all the football we managed to binge the new and last season of Bosch. Another show we're enjoying is This Is Pop on Netflix. Harper made Caroline sit through a Celine Dion concert on YouTube. A major televisual letdown was Sex/Life. Even Carmen from The L Word can't make it watchable. This week it's Harper's turn to recommend a book: The Secret to Superhuman Strength by Alison Bechdel. It's a true piece of art. It's Wednesday June 23, and here are your top music news stories, presented by The Filter. T-Pain took to social media Tuesday to defend Usher after he came under fire for sparking T-Pain's “four-year depression.” In the “Auto-Tune” episode of the Canadian series This Is Pop, which aired in March on CTV, T-Pain recalled being taken aside on an airplane by Usher in 2013. “He was like, ‘I want to tell you something, man' … He sounded real concerned. He was like, ‘Man, you kinda f' ed up music.' I didn't understand. Usher was my friend,” T-Pain shared. “He was like, ‘Nah, man, you really f' d up music for real singers.' “Literally at that point, I couldn't listen. Is he right? Did I f up music? That is the very moment – and I don't think I realized that for a long time – that's the very moment that started a four-year depression for me.” After the episode streamed in the U.S., many fans slammed Usher on social media. On Tuesday, T-Pain said he still loves and respects Usher. “Telling that story was in no way meant to disrespect that man,” he tweeted. “Ppl talk about me 24/7 but when it comes from someone you truly respect it hits very different.” Trick Daddy's restaurant in Miami Gardens, Florida is taking a lickin' this week after the rapper criticized Beyoncé's vocal talent. The 46-year-old, whose real name is Maurice Young, said during a Clubhouse session that “Beyoncé don't write music and barely can sing” Fans of Beyonce are responding by posting negative reviews of Sunday's Eatery, a restaurant Trick Daddy opened in 2019. “It was so nasty. I had such high expectations,” reads one Google review. “There was so much hair in my meal and the staff member told me to get over it.” Another reads: “A maggot crawled out of my mashed potatoes, a roach landed on my steak and a caterpillar came out of my asparagus.” Trick Daddy's supporters are countering with five-star reviews. “All y'all need to quit lyin like this man food nasty,” wrote one person. Meanwhile, Trick Daddy is not backing down. “What I said was, I don't think Beyoncé can sing,” he told a Miami radio station, “and that Beyoncé is to R&B what Jay-Z is to the state of hip hop in New York at the time, when Jay-Z … considered himself as the king of hip-hop, the dope of rap.” Trick Daddy said he has a right to express an opinion. “Beyoncé ain't Stephanie Mills. She ain't Patti LaBelle. She ain't Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey." Why Don't We member Jonah Marais is asking for fans' help to recover his personal journal, which was stolen on Sunday. In an Instagram Story on Tuesday, the 23-year-old singer said the journal “containing song lyrics and my thoughts from the last 6 months” was in a backpack taken from the Hotel Via in San Francisco while he was attending a baseball game. Marais shared several images from security cameras showing a man walking away with his backpack as well as two bags of camera gear and clothing owned by his friend, music video director Jason Koenig. “Maybe this man needs our stuff more than we do, but some of it is irreplaceable,” Marais wrote. “I'd love my journal back.” The singer added that he and Koenig, whose camera gear is reportedly valued at more than $50,000, filed a police report but are hoping his 2.1 million Instagram followers can help identify the suspect. “I know it's a long shot but maybe you guys can help.” Chris Brown is under investigation for an alleged assault on a woman in his home last Friday. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a report of an argument at the 32-year-old singer's house. TMZ reported that an unidentified woman alleged that Brown hit her in the head. No injuries were reported and no arrest was made. Thanks to John R.
