The oven is done cooking, the sheets are out of the dryer, and TJ has done a bang up job digesting and excreting the contents of Part 1 into a satisfying meal of an X-Franchise. Last week, Trevor talked a whole bunch about things that feel true to making a better X-Men movie or TV franchise, and now he gets to be silly again as he sits back and listens to the musings of an almost-screenwriter. And that's when Pedro Pascal's acting comes in. Join us for too many damn characters, a softly-spoken "nobody wants to follow you, dude", having Mark Ruffalo on retainer, and Thunderbird: he attac, he protec, but unfortunately, he still has to get wrecked.

Yes friends here we are with more strike content - because even though we're not Drew Barrymore, we still know what it means to not be a scab. That said, if some mouse-based mega corporation likes our ideas, we should be paid for them. This week and next week, Trevor and TJ will be doing a deep dive into X-Men comics history to pitch a better live action adaptation. Today, we begin with Trevor's super-fan interpretation of plots, characters, and key points to cover, so that TJ can get to cooking for next week. If we got stuff wrong, don't come for us! Join us for a very single Okoye, not giving evangelicals one inch with Nightcrawler, AOC as Kitty Pryde, and the X-Men never getting to have what they want.  PAY YOUR WRITERS AND ACTORS, YOU LEECHES/EXECS.

Optimize Yourself
Ep153: Mob Scene CEO Tom Grane on What It Takes to Succeed in Trailers & Marketing (Without Sacrificing Work-Life Balance)

Optimize Yourself

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2021 89:16

"We work to live. We don't live to work." - Tom Grane When I first began my career in Hollywood the concept of life outside of work was completely foreign to me. I assumed the only way to reach my goals was to sacrifice my health and sanity for the sake of a great résumé, only to discover those early habits become lifelong habits if you’re not careful. Once this mentality sets in and you set this expectation with others it can be practically impossible to reverse. That is why I am actively trying to change the conversation around our “get it done at all costs” work culture and collaborate with employers and business owners who understand the importance of work-life balance. Early in my career I was fortunate enough to experience a work culture where well-being was a priority at what was then a small fledgling trailer & marketing agency. Fast-forward fifteen years and today Mob Scene is one of the top movie marketing companies in the business - largely because of the culture that co-founder and CEO Tom Grane created from the very start. This innovative company has been an integral part of the marketing campaigns for projects like Avatar, Stranger Things, Fast 9, Wonder Woman, Joker, Knives Out, and The Trial of the Chicago 7...and that’s just recently. Historically they have provided marketing and original content for more marketing campaigns than I could list if I had the entire episode to do so. Having a background as a studio executive for 20th Century Fox, Tom admits to having a strong work ethic, and he’s spent his fair share of hours working late and being away from his family. But his motivation when he founded Mob Scene was to create more flexibility with his time and be more available to his family, and he believed in fostering an environment that provides the same flexibility for his team. In our conversation we discuss a variety of topics that can help creatives better understand what it takes to get an opportunity at a company like Mob Scene, that can help producers and business owners better understand the importance of fostering work-life balance with your teams, and that can help all of us better understand how to navigate our constantly changing landscape of content whether we’re working from home, at the office, or adopting a hybrid work environment. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: How Tom got his start in the entertainment industry. What led Tom to working for Fox for 16 years and then taking the leap to opening his own marketing company. Tom’s advice to young people just starting out in the business. How Tom created the culture of Mob Scene. Why they chose the name Mob Scene for the company and meaning behind the logo. KEY TAKEAWAY: Family and teamwork are the foundation of what makes Mob Scene successful. How Tom encourages trailer editors to do their best work and survive the competitive nature of the business. Why Tom knew from day one he wanted to create a division-less company and how it has helped them survive over the years. The changes that streaming platforms have made to the marketing industry and how Mob Scene has adapted. What's missing from the work from home experience. Alternate working options coming out of the COVID pandemic. Why it's important to have in-person interactions and what we miss when it's taken away. Understanding the criteria that sets people apart when it comes to getting hired. How the promotion system works at Mob Scene and why they primarily promote from within. The lack of diversity in the trailer world and how he's trying to change it at Mob Scene. The most important soft skills necessary for getting hired. The importance of identifying the ‘note beneath the note.’ Why young people just starting out should look for companies that promote work/life balance. In 2006, Grane co-founded Mob Scene Creative + Productions. In ten years, the innovative company has grown to become a “go to” agency for all of Hollywood’s top studios and networks and has been an integral part of the marketing campaigns for projects, like; AVATAR, ARGO, THE DEPARTED, THE HURT LOCKER, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, BIRDMAN, THE GREEN BOOK, THE X-MEN Franchise, The PLANET OF THE APES Franchise, The FAST AND FURIOUS Franchise, and FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Franchise. In addition to having won numerous Clio awards for his marketing work, Grane was also nominated for a primetime Emmy in 2010. So much artistic consideration was put into this film and honestly, we don't know if we did it justice with our conversation. The X-Men Franchise just doesn't get any better than this... ...However, we do still have some questions. Like, what timeline does this movie take place in? Seriously, though, please tell us. Len Ciccotello is an editor literally at the top of his specific craft: Video content marketing. This includes documentary shorts, long-form behind-the-scenes making-of documentaries, and all of the many cool bonus features you’ll find on Blu-Ray discs or even now on iTunes. He’s worked on such films as Bohemian Rhapsody, Avatar, Ready Player One, The Post, Deadpool, Argo, and several films in the X-Men Franchise, just to name a small few. Len came to me last year telling me he was ready to make a big transition in his career to editing scripted television and features...except he had no idea where to start. He’s driven, motivated, organized, and focused, but without a roadmap none of that mattered. He had no path and no idea where to focus his energy. Should he network? Quit his job first, or wait until he had a gig? Does he need to edit more scripted and build a reel? Become an assistant first? Jump right into editing? There were so many paths to choose, so over 12 weeks Len and I worked together one-on-one to design his unique path to success. And in fact he did so well that we had to cancel our last two sessions because he landed a job on his first scripted show by week 10! My purpose for sharing this case study is to help explain the process that Len and I worked through and the steps he took to make this transition happen and take a huge step forwards in his career, that way you can use some of the same ideas and techniques to move yourself forwards this year, whether or not you’re interested in one-on-one coaching. Guest Bio: LinkedIn Len’s career in post production started in New York City working for editor Hank Corwin’s commercial shop Lost Planet where he began as an intern. After 6 years at Lost Planet he moved to Los Angeles in 2000 to pursue working in film and television. For the past 15 years he has been a marketing and documentary editor, working most recently for Mob Scene Creative + Production. There he had the opportunity to work on documentaries for the Blu-ray releases of Avatar, Deadpool, Hidden Figures, Ready Player One and Bohemian Rhapsody. Recently, a constant desire to learn, challenge and improve his work lead him to take a step back to role of assistant editor in order to transition into scripted television. Len lives in Los Angeles with his wife and 2 dogs and works hard every day to bring love, joy and a sense of calm to those around him. In Episode 78 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. takes a long, hard look at Deadpool 2 and whether the Merc with the Mouth actually serves as the perfect opportunity for Fox, Marvel or both (depending on how Disney's acquisition of Fox turns out) to finally launch into the long-rumored top-to-bottom reboot of the convoluted and splintered X-Men film franchise. After all, Ryan Reynolds' anti-hero is already the biggest audience draw within the X-verse. So it stands to reason that he would serve as the launchpad for new interpretations on other mutant mainstays of Marvel Comics. Scoop up those chimichangas, and let's take a closer look, shall we?   Deadpool 2 synopsis courtesy of Fox (yes, seriously): After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Miami's hottest bartender, while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor - finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World's Best Lover. We’re excited to hear your feedback as the Crooked Table Podcast continues to evolve. As usual, the show does feature explicit language and, as such, is best considered NSFW. Thanks for listening! 'Logan' is an unsettling film and perhaps one of the great comic book adaptations in modern cinema. It is gritty, focused, unrelenting, and a marvelous deconstruction of so many tropes we have seen in super hero movies. This week we discuss how excited we are about the Nintendo Switch. They held a press conference this week and our minds were blown. Cannot wait for that Zelda game to take my money. Steve Harvey met with Donald Trump about how to get even more buttons on his ugly ass suits. As you know the orangest man to ever exist is about to take over the most important job with literally no experience. This week a man who looked like meth riddled Magnum P.I. asked me to give Trump a chance. We also discuss our origins of being about this nerd life. Top loading VCRs are some of the greatest cartoons of all time are brought up. There is a new series in the DC tv universe, Black Lightning. Is that name still ok? Was it ever ok? Except he will not be in the same continutiy as the other heroes that play together. Karl Urban is a man who wears many hats, he is in the future in space, he is a judge. He is now adding jaeger pilot to the mix as he will join the cast of Pacific Rim:Uprising with John Boyega. The X-Men franchise will be busy this year not only with Logan but the announcement of X-men:Supernova which seems to be a film about the phoenix saga. Also Deadpool 2 will be a spring board for X-Force. Deadpool will also see the return of many fan favorites Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and the taxi driver Dopinder. This week's top 5 is most anticipated films of 2017. In this episode, Big bro has a lot to say about time travel movies, and it's worth hearing if for no other reason than to convince you never to try and time travel, except to stop yourself from seeing Looper. But after you stop yourself, your future self will not know why it was bad, and will see it anyways. Congratulations! You fell for a classic time travel trope. Also, we talk briefly about the X-Men movies leading up to Apocalypse (which will be reviewed along with TMNT next episode). Enjoy!
