Today, my good friend Brian Ching is my guest. Brian is a retired professional soccer player who played for twelve years in Major League Soccer and represented the U.S. national team for eight years.  He was the 16th pick by the LA Galaxy in the 2001 MLS Superdraft and in 2006 relocated to Houston to join the Houston Dynamo where he led the team to back-to-back MLS Cup Championships in 2006 and 2007 and four MLS finals overall. A six-time MLS All-Star, Ching retired from professional soccer in 2013 as Houston Dynamo's all-time leading scorer. Off the field, Ching is a pillar in the Houston community where he is partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for underprivileged families in the Houston area through fundraising efforts under his program "The House that Ching Built".  He is also an entrepreneur and recently opened the soccer themed beer garden in Downtown Houston called Pitch 25 – Pitch for soccer pitch and 25 for his number. It’s 25,000 sq feet of awesomeness right across from Dynamo Stadium and even has a small “pitch” of its own right in the center. Highly recommend checking it out.  He also launched Hula Dog a food truck franchise that he brought over from his native Hawaii serving amazing hot dogs and sausages.  He is married to an amazing woman, hey Liz! He's a dad and just an all around great guy and fun training partner – he and I share a mutual interest in these XPT Life pool workouts and meet up each week to take ‘em on – we talk more about that later on in the show!

In this episode, I talk with human performance specialist PJ Nestler.  Over the past 10 years, PJ has trained dozens of professional athletes, including several Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champions and Top 10 ranked UFC fighters.  PJ is also the Director of Performance at XPT Life, founded by Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece. PJ lives by a mantra: “Don't talk about it, be about it.”  Makes sense and sounds pretty badass, but what does it even mean?   It's not just a saying, it's the way he lives his life.  If he makes a commitment, he keeps it. If he sets a goal, he figures out a way to do it.  If he says he'll be somewhere - even if he doesn't want to go - he'll be there. Not only has this mantra helped PJ, but he thinks it's a massive differentiator for anyone who wants to be great.  Most athletes come to him with the goal of being the best in the world but “9/10 people are lying to themselves.” They don't put in the obsessive, disciplined work to get there.  They don't focus on all of the small things. Put simply, they may talk about it but they aren't being about it. If you're early in your career and struggling, if you have ambitious dreams you're chasing, give this one a listen.  And if you like what you hear, tell a friend and help us to share the message. Star volleyball player Gabby Reece’s is one half of a power couple with husband Laird Hamilton. The wisdom she’s gained as a public figure, a pro & Olympic athlete, a sports model, a mother, and as partner to an alpha guy like Laird caused our podcast team to nickname her “Yoda.” Gabby has an unexpected message of accepting and nurturing people as they are and how they choose to define their objectives. She may have even shifted Joe’s paradigm, but we doubt it, yet there’s a good chance she’ll adjust yours. Although we would have loved interviewing her husband Laird too, serendipity had him rescuing Hawaiians from floods brought on by torrential rainfall and that meant we received “Yoda’s” wisdom uncut. Lessons: 1. It can be a show of strength to let someone else take the lead.
 2. Your kids are not hearing you or listening to you, but you can be certain that they’re watching you.
 3. Another interpretation of “the meek shall inherit the earth” is that they all had swords, they just didn’t unsheath them.
