Kevin and I talk about what got him started in miniature painting, how he began to grow as a painter, and what he did when he discovered groups of other miniature painters on Facebook. Chris started playing Warmachine and Hordes with his friends as a way of relaxing during his medical residency. As his medical and social responsibilities grew, he had less time to play against his friends. He wanted to be able to maintain contact with them and the hobby, so he started focusing on painting miniatures to a higher level instead.Chris finds inspiration for his miniature dioramas everywhere he goes. When he sees something that strikes him as interesting and possibly something he could use in a future project, he stores it in a mental inspiration bank for future use.One of Chris' favorite eureka moments was when he took two figures from two entirely different scales and was able to successfully combine them into a single diorama. This is an extremely interesting dive into the minds and passions behind one of the best MDF terrain companies in the industry.Austin tells how we started working on building and selling small house and model kits at a very young age. His love of building and crafting led him to work with Miniwargaming and starting commission work. Now the creation of Death Ray Designs allowed him and his business partner to get back to creating terrain and scenery for all kinds of miniature wargames.We also discuss the various artists and worlds he gets a lot of his inspiration from. So much of Death Ray Designs' products feature shapes and impressions that nod to other worlds. Newsflash: We live in a time where people expect us to use the available technology in our businesses to be more efficient and make thing more convenient. Sending a picture means the client doesn’t need to schedule another hour or more of their time with some company that may or may not show up on time.   It means a woman can get a price without having to meet some stranger in her home while her husband is away. Put a form on your website for them to upload pictures or at the very least have them text them to you. 99% of the prospects love this. If anyone has a problem with this it’s the average contractor who has head trash around it. Getting a photo is easy. It sounds like this: Prospect: Hi, I’d like to get an estimate for painting a bedroom. You: Thanks for calling! (Insert gathering their contact info here and find out where they heard of you, etc). Would it be ok if I share our process with you? Prospect: Sure. You: We have a free estimate and a paid consultation. The free one means you send a picture and I call you back and we talk about the job, what it could cost and see if it makes sense to take the next step. The paid is when we come out and provide a detailed report and scope of work that you can use to compare to others and shop around. That’s $200. Which makes the most sense to you? Then, shut up and let them talk. Most will send the picture. Most will say “That’s a great idea. It’s so easy.” Differentiate yourself and claim your spot as the expert in your industry. Slow things down and make sure they are on your system. Get a picture and make it all about it being convenient for them. You’ll sell at higher rates and run around less, which will allow you to work more on your business. The wonderful people behind this are Robert Marc and Ann Torrence. Very much more to the reason why I admire them more, neither Ann nor Robert hold any formal horticultural training. Ann is in fact a former travelling photographer and author; and Robert a university scientist. Of interest to you based in the UK and Ireland side of the globe, Stray Arrow Ranch gets about 12 inches of water per annum and because of the rights to water - they are allowed 12 hours of water per approximate 10 days - making, horticulture in mind, the growing of plants just that little more challenging. We get into this, grafting of trees, Ann's book, how Robert and Ann actually met and just how they managed to settle in Utah and why they left their jobs to set up what is now Stray Arrow Ranch.
