Sunday, we started an Easter season sermon series that shows what it means to be a Christian and follow Jesus by digging into His last hours leading to the cross. You can't follow Jesus if you don't follow him all the way to the cross. The last 24 hours, as he goes to the cross, are sparked with some of the most electrifying truths of our faith: Earnest Imitation, Soul-Crushing Surrender, Public Speech, Death-Defying Trust, Divine Power! Terrence kicked off the series, Real, compelling us to have earnest imitation - to live our lives differently because of Jesus! To hold string to our church community, groups, and brothers and sisters in faith in the midst of our struggles and challenges. How do we emulate Jesus through how we love one another?

So will there be a Trump 2024? New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo addressed the sexual scandals, as more and more women are coming forward with their stories. Is an impeachment in his future? And President Biden gave a speech in Texas and actually got to a point where he says, "What am I doing here?" Is that a symptom of his speech impediment too? Unlikely. A top Biden adviser says the administration will "start acting now" on reparations. I joined Toastmasters. And it was the best decision I have made besides being with my future wife because I'm marketing my personal brand while learning to public speak. The first speech in Toastmasters is an icebreaker. Toastmaster groups are a tight knit group and you can take advantage of this by introducing yourself to them in your first speech and networking. Remember that your network is your net worth. This wasn't an in person speech, but rather a speech over a zoom call due to COVID restrictions. I was nervous because the only time I presented in front of people was in school. This may sound weird, but to overcome this just imagine the crowd taking a number 2. No seriously. Imagining everyone naked used to make me uncomfortable because I'm being stared at by naked people, but them taking a dump is just hilarious and they would be embarrassed. I made it through my speech imagining this. The listeners started with good praise about my enthusiasm and determination to step up and do a speech within one week of joining the group. This has never happened. With this being the case, they gave me more praise by telling me that I was going to be very successful. I was going to have to get critiqued at some point. Why not get it over with now? I knew most of the problems I had with public speaking before the evaluator even started talking, but it sucks to hear it from someone else. That speech was horrible. Expectedly, the evaluator told me that I talk too fast and I always use filler words such as “uhh.” I needed to learn to breathe. This speech didn't turn out as good as I thought it would be, but I did realize that speaking and writing copy are connected because you write how you speak. Why? Customers will connect with the copy more if it is more conversational instead of them reading an article. Think about it. You are persuading them to take action. If you wouldn't talk to them as if you were a narrator reading an article, then why would you write your copy as if it was an article? You probably think that public speech isn't conversational. In a way it is. Besides teaching you not to waste words, public speech also teaches you to talk to a mass group of people to take action by resonating with their personal emotions. And this is why I recommend that you learn to speak in public. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Questions of Jesus’ authority – an ongoing focus in Matthew –  now come to the fore in the parable from chapter 21, as Jesus’ challenge to the temple authorities escalates. The theme of consistency, being publicly honest about what one believes, emerges. The gospel is real about our ongoing failure to be consistent. We point to the grace in Christ, the faithful consistent one, and in God who is with us as he is in Godself. We warn against simplistic supersessionist readings of this parable of the two sons. Themes of God’s faithfulness & provision continue in the Exodus passage, as the Israelites’ fear, anxiety and grumbling continue. We speak of leadership in trying times – Moses’ and God’s and how they relate. We refer to an interesting New Testament link to the water in the rock. We suggest the Exodus passage contains an excellent title for a sermon, especially in covid times (when our gathering is so compromised): “Is the Lord among us or not?”.

If you want to give a good speech that will resonate with people, you should not use notes or an outline, says Gerard Gregoire, vice president of litigation services for the West region at Allstate. Instead, he says, know what you want to say forward and backward—much like you would a case file before trial—and practice on your own, so that you know the information so well you don’t have to rely on notes as a reminder. In this episode of Asked and Answered with the ABA Journal’s Stephanie Francis Ward, Gregoire offers public speaking tips for lawyers and why it’s important to be authentic and connect with an audience.
