Right-Wing Trans Hate Comes for the WNBA

The WNBA is having a moment. Viewership is up. Attendance for this year's WNBA All-Star Game surpassed the NBA's All-Star Game. Games and events can be viewed in a record number of places, from broadcast to cable and streaming. And just this week, Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream set a single-game record. But the stories about the WNBA capturing national attention in recent weeks are about none of that. Instead, the focus has been on two retired NBA players, including Enes Kanter Freedom, who showed up courtside at an August 23 Chicago Sky–Indiana Fever game wearing a T-shirt that said "Woman: noun. adult human female."“I don't believe that he's being genuine in any realm, in order to create this mass hysteria of sorts for an issue that's actually simply a non-issue,” says Angela Perry, a WNBA content creator, tells The Intercept Briefing. “There are no trans women in the WNBA; there are none attempting to be in the WNBA.”This week on The Intercept Briefing podcast, host Jessica Washington speaks to Perry and journalist Katelyn Burns about how the premier women's professional basketball league has found itself at the center of a right-wing manufactured panic.“The right has made such hay out of trans women in women's sports that they need to keep inventing controversies in order to keep this issue front of mind,” says Burns who writes for the independent newsletter Burns Notice and co-hosts the Cancel Me, Daddy podcast. “We have a midterm election coming up, and to be frank with you, the only thing that the right has done besides terrorizing immigrants is banning trans women from women's sports. It's at the center of almost all of their policies,” continues Burns. “They are inventing controversies about trans people in sports where there are no trans people involved.”“This is about women in general. They're already talking about not wanting women to have the right to vote,” says Perry. “This isn't just about sports. There's a political party trying to scale us back to what they perceive was a time where things were better. But really, it was when women were more controlled.”“The bigger issue is that the people who think that they're protected, it's always going to get to the protected class eventually,” warns Perry. “Right now, the focus is trans, and people think they're safe because ‘I'm not trans. I'm a cis woman and I'm protected.' But it will impact you.”For more, listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen.Full transcript: https://interc.pt/3UXTwXsKeep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join. Shaun Morash is in for Evan Roberts alongside Tiki Barber, and they explain why Tennessee's struggles only crank up the pressure on the Jets to win Week 1. With Flott getting beaten repeatedly and Garrett Wilson waiting in the opener, the Jets could have a matchup they need to exploit. Shaun and Tiki also debate Geno Smith's leash, what Cade Klubnik must prove in the preseason, and why Aaron Glenn's defense could determine whether the Jets finally show real progress. Plus, Shaun argues Yankee Stadium is getting shafted by MLB's All-Star Game rotation, and the guys question why Giants legend and Hall of Famer Harry Carson still hasn't had his number retired.

Yes, there was an All-Star game in Major League Baseball in 1917. In fact, before the All-Star Game became a regular fixture on the baseball calendar in 1933, it wasn't unusual to see some sort of All-Star game, or an exhibition game featuring stars from around baseball. But this game, in 1917, was different. It was staged to honor a baseball giant, Tim Murnane, who not only played the game, but was a manager, an umpire, an executive and a baseball journalist. After he left the diamond behind, Murnane created his own newsletter, "The Boston Referee." It became a must-read for baseball fans and it wasn't too long before the "Boston Globe," scooped up Murnane and he became a sports editor for the legendary newspaper. Years later, Murnane died suddenly at a theatre. Everyone around the sport (and elsewhere) was saddened and wanted to help his family. The Red Sox and many from the baseball world arranged a game to help raise money for Murnane's family. Murnane meant so much to so many that they played the game during the season. Stars left their teams to play in the middle of a pennant race. Tris Speaker, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, and several others made their way to Fenway Park to take part. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, Scott D. Reich, author of the new book, "One Day in September," joins the show for a look back at a very special edition of a baseball All-Star game.

Plus, Sam and Rohtas discuss Emily Sonnett's season-ending injury and what it could mean for Gotham FC and the USWNT, the debate over an NWSL All-Star Game, the importance of preserving the Challenge Cup, and the growing tension between commercialization and protecting what makes soccer special. Snyder hosts as Dave and Bohmbach take on Gabe Pulver and Jamie Hirsh from the Menschwarmers podcast in a game featuring Jewish Sports Quarterly All-Stars. Gabe names Bohmbach a “Mike Jacobs All-Star” (sounds Jewish but isn't), along with hammer toss champ Ethan Katzberg. In the first quarter, Luks reveals Bob Geldof's unknown child, Zach, and Gabe recalls Charles Barkley racing Dick Bavetta.  During a second-quarter Missing Link, Gabe remembers Remember the Titans, and guesses that the Jewish link might somehow be related to papal names.  In halftime, we learn that Nemo's dad came up with the theory of relativity, and that the star of a Fish Called Wanda could have been Jamie Lee …Schwartz??? The third quarter sees both teams go deep in the very shallow pool of Jewish Quarterbacks, as the Menschwarmers unwrap the kimono on Scott Zolak, and query (quite un-Jewishly, I might add) that if Charlie Whitehurst was clipboard Jesus, was his dad David “clipboard God”? In a very Luks moment, David makes a pop culture reference to Allan Sherman, who did “Harvey and Sheila.”  The Menschwarmers answer at least two questions correctly because of Jewish Geography, and while kibbitzing in the fourth quarter, David shares that, contrary to popular belief, he was not at the 1946 All-Star Game, because it was his Bar Mitzvah.  No one gets Snyder's clue on the last question, and we end by exchanging misdelivered mail.  #philiproth #riseball #demardiedforthis #Jewishgeography #MichaelJordon #LuksisBostonPops   *For a glossary of Jewish terms and phrases used in this episode, go to https://tinyurl.com/Menschwarmers   https://dobosdelights.com/ Promo Code: CheckYourTaint https://www.patreon.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.facebook.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.twitter.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.instagram.com/benchwarmerstp/ https://www.teepublic.com/stores/benchwarmers-trivia-podcast

Eli Zaret stops by to break down the up and down Detroit Tigers as the trade deadline looms. Tarik Skubal's decision is fast approaching, Framber Valdez sucks. The silly racial drama in the WNBA. A chick dunked in the All-Star Game but these are the true highlights. The WNBA players seem to be banging each other. the desperation of Tom Brady, LeBron James is taking his talents to the Philadelphia 76ers to chase a final title. Happy anniversary to NIL. Charlie Woods is a chip off the old block. Neal Brennan's less famous brother, Kevin, is losing his mind over meaningless podcast statistics. Fellow Dabbleverse comic, Chad Zumock, is coming to town and will drop a new fully-funded 'special' soon. AI will do whatever you tell it. Stupid technology. There is a Bubba the Love Sponge documentary titled Video Killed the Radio Star. It's on Tubi. D4vd is completely screwed as the evidence piles up. Sloan was in court and breaks down the hearings. Adult children are living at their parent's homes at crazy levels. Drew needs more Spruce Goose information. Astronaut Katy Perry has sure fallen from grace. She's very upset the White House used her song for a social media post. No more VIP treatment for Blake Lively. Ryan Reynolds annoyed people at Marvel's Comic-Con. Ben Crump found a new case to weasel out of the Nolan Wells case. Nolan's friends are talking but nobody will return their phone calls. That Shiloh Hendrix broad guilty of saying the n-word. Music: David Lee Roth's tour is canceled. Sammy Hagar invites Diamond Dave to his Las Vegas residency with Michael Anthony. Bon Jovi struggled to sing at Madison Square Garden and the dude from Train came and saved the day (kinda). RUNDOWN   Mitch and Hotshot Scott open Episode 391 by previewing football season for patrons before a laugh about Scott's father-in-law hijacking the family's evening. They hit the Mariners' 100-game .500 mark, reminisce about the Big Red Machine, then shift to the World Cup, where both stayed hooked long after Team USA's exit. Mitch and Scott rave about teenage phenom Lamine Yamal, poke fun at FIFA's halftime show, preview Seahawks camp, Ryan Fox's British Open win, and Bryson DeChambeau's penalty. Ray Roberts and Mitch discuss Seattle's new ownership, why the defending Super Bowl champs still seem overlooked, and what the Seahawks gained—and lost—this offseason. Roberts also shares hilarious training camp stories, from sneaking home to sleep in his own bed to finally meeting childhood hero Ed "Too Tall" Jones, the player who inspired him to wear No. 72. Mitch, Joe Doyle, and Brady Farkas break down another uneven Mariners series as Seattle reaches the 100-game mark at 50-50. They argue Dan Wilson has become an unfair scapegoat for a flawed roster, praise Cole Young's continued rise, and discuss Julio Rodríguez's return, Colt Emerson's progress, and looming roster decisions. Mitch welcomes three beat reporters who know the Mariners' top draft picks better than anyone. Sam Sklar breaks down first-round slugger Ace Reese, Koki Riley explains why LSU outfielder Jake Brown could become a second-round steal, and Scott Springer profiles Cincinnati right-hander Nathan Taylor, whose bulldog mentality and dominant slider made him one of the draft's best values. Together, they provide an inside look at Seattle's newest wave of talent and what fans can expect from each prospect.   GUESTS   Ray Roberts | Former Seahawks offensive lineman and Seahawks Radio Network Analyst Brady Farkas | Host, Refuse to Lose podcast Joe Doyle | MLB analyst, Over-Slot Sam Skylar | Mississippi State beat reporter, Clarion Ledger Koki Riley | LSU beat reporter, The Daily Advertiser and USA Today Scott Springer | Cincinnati Bearcats beat reporter, The Enquirer   TABLE OF CONTENTS   0:00 | World Cup Wrap, British Open Chaos & Birthday Trivia 26:378 | Ray Roberts; Training Camp Memories, New Seahawks Ownership & Barry Sanders Stories 55:12 | Mariners No-Table; Mariners Tread Water as Trade Deadline Decisions Loom 1:13:03 | Sam Skylar, Koki Riley, Scott Springer [Beat Reporters]; Inside the Mariners' Top Three Draft Picks 1:39:34 | Other Stuff: Josh Kerr breaks the 27-year-old mile record with a blistering 3:42, Roger Bannister's four-minute mile legacy, Alex Rodriguez's factually disastrous Justin Verlander interview during the All-Star Game, Mike Tyson's viral ESPYs moment after learning Shohei Ohtani is a man, Baron Davis sued by his sister over an alleged real estate fraud, suspended Cardinals executive Ryan Gold denies violating the NFL gambling policy, Matt Fitzpatrick says legalized sports betting is fueling fan abuse of golfers, JPMorgan executive Lorna Tsoujini countersues after denying allegations she tried to make a coworker her "sex slave."
