MDJ Script/ Top Stories for May 16th Publish Date:  May 16th    Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Friday, May 16th and Happy Birthday to Pierce Brosnan I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Kennesaw State students protest losing Black Studies program Cobb Commuter Routes Consolidated, Free Cumberland Loop Cut Second Annual Paws Fest is May 17-18 Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on grass-fed beef All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: TOP TECH MECHANICAL STORY 1: Kennesaw State students protest losing Black Studies program Dozens of Kennesaw State University students protested outside the University System of Georgia offices against the termination of KSU's Black Studies degree program, citing it as a setback for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. The university attributed the decision to declining enrollment, but critics argue the process lacked transparency and undercounted students. Demonstrators carried signs and chanted slogans emphasizing the importance of diversity. The Board of Regents, which oversees such decisions, has not addressed the issue in its upcoming meeting. DEI programs face increasing opposition at state and federal levels, including legislative efforts in Georgia to defund them. STORY 2: Cobb Commuter Routes Consolidated, Free Cumberland Loop Cut Cobb County will eliminate the free Green Circulator bus loop near The Battery and consolidate three commuter routes (100, 101, 102) into the regional 484 Xpress route due to reduced ridership and the failure of a proposed transit tax. Ridership on commuter routes has dropped 81% since 2019, prompting cost-saving measures. The changes will save over $1.1 million annually, with funds redirected to other transit needs, including the 2025 All-Star Game. The county’s deal with ATL adds seven trips to the 484 route, covering most of the same stops, though the Marietta Transfer Center will no longer be included. STORY 3: Second Annual Paws Fest is May 17-18 The Avenue of West Cobb will host its second annual Paws Fest on May 17-18, featuring exciting DockDogs canine competitions like Big Air Wave, Extreme Vertical, and Speed Retrieve. Events begin at 10 a.m. each day, with finals on May 18 at 4:30 p.m. The festival also includes pet-friendly vendors, interactive booths, grooming services, and giveaways, such as doggy ice cream treats from Bark Street Petopia. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  Break: Ingles Markets 6 STORY 4: ‘A True Blessing’: New Pantry at Dunleith Fights Child Hunger Dunleith Elementary School in Marietta has opened a new food pantry, thanks to MUST Ministries and Kroger, to combat child hunger. Serving 50 families monthly, the pantry provides nonperishable food, produce, meat, diapers, and hygiene products. As a Title I school, 90% of Dunleith students receive free or reduced lunches, highlighting the need. This pantry is the fourth opened through a $207,000 Kroger-MUST partnership, which has established 18 pantries across Cobb and Cherokee counties. The initiative aims to reduce food insecurity, allowing students to focus on learning while addressing Kroger’s mission of “zero hunger, zero waste.” STORY 5: Marietta School Board Applauds Staff Support in Tentative Budget Approval The Marietta Board of Education tentatively approved a $167 million fiscal 2026 budget, a 5% increase from last year, focusing on staff raises and maintaining a flat 17.97 millage rate. The budget includes an average 3.3% raise for employees, with some reaching 6.4%, and allocates over 90% of the increase to salaries and benefits. Key allocations include $3.65 million for raises, $770,000 for new staff, and $2.6 million for insurance premium hikes. Public hearings are set for June 10 and 17, with a final vote on June 17. Additional approvals include funding for math programs, HR software, and school security. The Nats opened the doubleheader vs. Cleveland with their 3rd straight win, but that momentum was halted just a few hours later. Mark & Al reluctantly begin again with the bullpen, who overall had an awful Tuesday at the ballpark.  They inherited a 6-2 lead in Game 1, but the Guardians immediately scored six runs in the top of the 7th.  The offense bailed them out and then Kyle Finnegan notched his 100th career save.(7:10) The Nationals were trailing when Brad Lord departed Game 2, but the 'pen still managed to give up five runs in only three innings of work. Lucas Sims allowed three runs and his ERA is now up to 12.34.(14:30) Jake Irvin continued his season long trend of having his roughest inning in the top of the 1st. Irvin was pulled in the 6th and Al offers a suggestion of how the organization should consider handling his future starts.(17:30) Lord had a good outing, but all signs are pointing to him moving back to the bullpen once Michael Soroka returns from the IL on Wednesday.  Lord began the season as a reliever before he was thrust into the rotation due to surrounding injuries.(27:00) The offense came through with ten hits in the Game 1 victory.  James Wood went deep with a 2-run shot for his 10th homer of the year.  Dylan Crews had a RBI double to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th; shortly after the bullpen coughed up the lead.(29:30) The bats were quiet in Game 2, Riley Adams solo HR was the only source of scoring.  Josh Bell returned to the lineup after missing three straight games and went hitless in the cleanup spot.  The bright spot came from CJ Abrams as he drew a trio of walks in the leadoff spot. Abrams has played at a level where he might return to the All-Star Game this summer.(36:40) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the Rochester Red Wings, gives Nats Chat an exclusive report on what is happening at AAA.

Holy thunderstorms, Batman! The sky was lit-up during the overnight with lightning and rain cleaned up some of that sand on the roads. But clearing up for a beautiful Friday afternoon with high temps in the upper-70's! Unfortunately, it's going to crash back into the 40's this weekend with some snow possible. In the news this morning, a sentencing in a 50 year cold case in Dunn County, Elon Musk paid a man in Green Bay $1 million for signing a petition, around 60 Macy's stores will be closing soon, Governor Tony Evers launched a job portal for federal workers who got fired under the Trump administration, and a teacher in Wauwatosa is in some hot water after an email from 2023 surfaced where she referred to an eighth grader as a "hooker". In sports, the Brewers kicked off the regular season with a 4-2 loss to the Yankees in New York yesterday, the Bucks are back at home tonight against the Knicks, and the men's Sweet 16 kicked off last night. The men's & women's Sweet 16 continues tonight. Elsewhere in sports, NBA commissioner Adam Silver finally admitted that this year's All-Star Game was an unmitigated disaster and that the league is going "back to the drawing board". We let you know what's on TV this weekend and what's in theaters. And Doc joined us at 8:15am for the Racing Report, courtesy of County Materials in Holmen. A new ice cream is set to hit grocery store shelves that apparently tastes like breast milk, without using any actual breast milk. The FBI has recognized three young girls in the Seattle area who helped stop an attempted kidnapping last year…and check out this eighth grader who invented a seizure-detection device for her grandmother! Talk about a bright future! ICYMI, Hard Mt. Dew Code Red is coming out sometime this year and they're running a contest to "Save the Redheads". Also, Instacart is adding a new feature to help with poor substitutions when the item you ordered isn't available. If you're looking for a side hustle, there are "loyalty testers" out there who apparently get paid to lure people in committed relationships into cheating on their partner. And not that you need a reason/excuse to go on a vacation, but we talked about some signs that it might be time to take a few days off work. We talked last week about some of the new food items at Miller Park this year...and today we discussed some of the other interesting food offerings throughout the rest of the league in 2025. In today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about an idiot in California who broke into someone's house to commit a robbery while wearing an ankle monitor, a Michigan resident who died after receiving an organ transplant that was infected with rabies, a "cat butt" video game, a police chief that's accused of turning his station into something out of "Animal House", and a plumber that re-clogged a pipe after a restaurant refused to pay it's bill!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you thought Deflategate was the last of Tom Brady's antics, think again. However, does this agreement include Stafford visiting the home of Las Vegas Raiders minority owner Tom Brady? Jason and Steve Kim explore whether Brady is stepping over the line and tampering with Stafford's "limited" agreement with the Rams regarding his impending free agency. In lieu of an All-Star Game, the National Hockey League hosted a unique international tournament over 10 days in February 2025. It featured the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland. It was played under a political controversy in which President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada advocated for Canada to be the 51st state of the US and called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a governor. During the USA-Canada Round Robin game, Canadian fans booed the US National Anthem. That game featured three fights in the first 9 seconds. The action was truly best-on-best, and the NHL's top players rose to the occasion. Canada defeated the US in the championship game and took the trophy. Dan Rosen covers the NHL for NHL.com and is making his second appearance on the podcast (Episode 339). In this episode, Rosen depicts what it was like to be there in person. How can the NBA be fixed? Is the All-Star Game the problem, or is it just a symptom of a much bigger issue? The game needs to be fixed domestically rather than prioritizing this globalist agenda. Former ESPN broadcaster and sportswriter Bill Simmons brainstorms creative ways to get the NBA back on its feet. Jason expands on the conversation by arguing that the NBA should do everything in its power to keep freshman phenom Duke basketball star Cooper Flagg in college for as long as possible. Whitlock believes in the college blueprint — professional prospects should build a following in college and continue to develop their craft. Then, once they make the leap to the pros, they will be more polished players while also bringing a huge fan base with them. While the NBA faces major issues, the WNBA, on the other hand, is growing at an alarming rate — to the point where the league is considering freedom from the NBA's destructive narrative. The league that subsidized the WNBA's debt on a yearly basis has essentially been given the finger. In other sports news, the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off championship between Canada and the USA is on Thursday, and the hype surrounding this game couldn't be greater. It could very well be the most viewed hockey match in a decade. Steve Kim joins the show to weigh in on all these topics, as well as Serena Williams' strange attention stunt, Anthony Edwards not wanting to be the face of the league, LeBron James' beef with Doug Gottlieb, and Shedeur Sanders dropping a new song.
