The Phils approach the All-Star Break with questions, while maintaining Playoff position, neck and neck with the Mets atop the NL East. Zach Wheeler will be home resting instead of wasting valuable pitches in the meaningless All-Star Game. With an elite starting rotation, trade deadline moves for the team's struggling bullpen will determine the liklihood of a return trip to the World Series. With valuable prospects and trade pieces on the present club, Dombrowski will have options this month. The mystery remaining is how he will decide to move, or not move those pieces, and what value other teams believe they actually possess in a deal. The Sixers are in the midst of the summer league and Edgecombe looks like a player. Yet again however, the success of this basketball team next season will hinge on the health and availability of their former MVP Embiid as well as star Paul George. As the NFL offseason presses on and Training Camp is around the corner, we discuss Jalen Hurts and the landscape of NFL QB's through Super Bowl history as well as the present state, and look back at SBLIX. Patrick Bailey's walk-off inside-the-park homerun on Tuesday night is something that will be burned into Giants' lore for decades to come. Pagan's similar feat happened 12 years ago, and we still talk about it. This one was better. We open the episode discussing Bailey's round-tripper and how the Giants have picked themselves up after a horrific streak to end June. Getting swept at home by the Marlins and losing two of three to the lowly White Sox put them 9 games behind their rivals, but since then, they have won 6 of 8 and the Dodgers have lost 6 in a row, closing the gap to 5 games. Three Giants pitchers were selected to the All Star Game (Webb, Ray, Rodriguez) and the mid-summer classic will feature the ABS challenge system, which is eventually coming to the big leagues. Although Devers has been meddling in mediocrity since coming to SF (.225/2/9), Adames seems to be waking up, hitting .313 with a .910 OPS over the last 2 weeks. Justin Verlander is flummoxed, and although he isn't having a great year, it's not catastrophic. Even a pitcher with his stats (4.70 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) should have a couple of wins on a winning team. Yet, he is winless in 15 Giants starts. He'll tie the MLB record if he doesn't win his next start. However, the pen has blown 6 leads for him, and he has the second-worst run support of any starting pitcher in the bigs (26 runs in 15 starts). Heading into LA is big. The set up the rotation with Webb, Roupp, and Ray, but the Dodgers counter with May, Ohtani, and Yamamoto. They will be anywhere between 2 and 8 games back of the Dodgers after this series, a huge potential swing. www.torturecast.comfacebook.com/torturecast@torturecast

SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington and Evan Grant are joined by Joe Hoyt, covering the Cowboys in his return to the staff. [1:10] Kevin and Evan can't argue with the fact that Jacob deGrom was the only Ranger on the preliminary list for Tuesday's All-Star Game. Do they also fail to make any ripples at the trade deadline? Evan says he wouldn't have a problem if Chris Young played the cards in his hand. Kevin says he'd dangle Adolis Garcia in a deal. [22:10] Joe renders his two biggest questions for the Cowboys' season. The first: How will the offense assimilate George Pickens, who, despite massive talent, had problems in Pittsburgh. Lottery ticket: Can Cardinals score a transformative talent with No. 5 pick in MLB Draft?

Post-Dispatch podcasts page: https://go.stltoday.com/0hfn43 Please consider subscribing: https://go.stltoday.com/9aigz5 It has been more than a generation since the Cardinals picked in the top five for the MLB Draft, and in a week the Cardinals have a chance for a transformative selection that could come define their next era. A confluence of events meet them at the MLB Draft in Atlanta on Sunday as they hold the No. 5 pick a year after taking J.J. Wetherholt at No. 7, they are deep into a transition year with a new front office leader poised to take over, and they are certain to have access to one of the top three college pitchers available in this draft.  To capture and explore this moment in Cardinals' draft history, Baseball America editor in chief J.J. Cooper joins the Best Podcast in Baseball. With St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball writer Derrick Goold, Cooper discusses the scope of talent available in the 2025 draft, trends that suggest where the Cardinals will look, and the upside of the talent likely available to them at No. 5. Matt Holliday's son, Ethan, is not expected to get past the Colorado Rockies at No. 4. If he does get to No. 5, the Cardinals are poised to select him. If not, there will be a high-ceiling high school infielder available, an established college shortstop available, or at least one of the three top college lefties. Cooper and Goold discuss how the choice could reveal the Cardinals' view of their ability to contend. Florida State lefty Jamie Arnold would be a pick that reaches the majors within 12 months as more and more early picks are doing. Oklahoma high schooler Eli Willits, Reggie's son, would be a longer-term pick who might impact the Cardinals most as they enter the 2030s. Baseball America will flood the zone with coverage from the MLB Draft that begins in primetime Sunday night from Atlanta and concludes Monday. Follow Baseball America on YouTube for recent conversations about sleeper prospects in the minors, including Cardinals' Class AA starter Ixan Henderson.  The Post-Dispatch will be present at the draft to bring coverage of the Cardinals' first pick and then coverage throughout the week from the All-Star Game festivities at Atlanta's Truist Park.  In its 13th season as one of the go-to podcasts on Cardinals baseball, the Best Podcast in Baseball is sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis. It is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold.
