Between painting alongside her grandmother and watching her father build reproduction antique furniture, Rosa Leff grew up seeing no distinction between fine art and craft. What mattered was that things were made by hand and done well. It is with that in mind that she creates her hand cut paper pieces. Each of Leff's papercuts is cut by hand from a single sheet of paper using a knife. Her cityscapes are based on photos she's taken in her neighborhood and all over the world. While Leff is best known for her ability to capture thin tangles of powerlines and intricate brickwork, she also enjoys experimenting with novel media such as paper plates and paper towels. Leff delights in bringing a modern, urban perspective to a traditional folk medium. Leff serves on the board of The Guild of American Papercutters and is a member of The Paper Artist Collective. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States and in China. She resides in Baltimore with her husband and chihuahuas, Chalupa and Refrito. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? John Wells is an American rapper, producer, and songwriter from Baltimore, Maryland. Growing up around music, he always wanted to be an artist himself. At the age of 11, a friend introduced him to Eminem, inspiring him to write his own raps. From the ages of 11 to 15, he went though many phases of artists ranging from Tupac Shakur, to Lil Boosie, to Chance the Rapper. At the beginning of 2013, about the start of the second semester of his sophomore year in high school, he started playing video games every night with two friends from school, named Qwame Mundell, better known as QMD, and Tyrez Morton, who was already releasing music at the time under the name TC, better known as HB Rez. A few months of sleepless nights playing playstation passed, and he was introduced to Malik King, better known as 2k, another person to play playstation with every night. Around the end of April 2013, he was introduced to FL Studio by his friend, Jamal Scott, better known as Scotty Banx, who he'd met that year in an elective class for music video production at Kenwood High School. He'd always struggled with finding beats that he liked on YouTube. Inspired by a local young artist from Baltimore named Butch Dawson, who produced all of his own music, he decided he wanted to make his own. On June 27th, 2013, John Wells, at the time going by his nickname, Luckee, released his first verse that was featured on a song by HB Rez, entitled "DOPEBOY". Two days later, after a good response on the song, John, Tyrez, Malik, and Qwame were on the phone, playing playstation like they always would, when they decided they wanted to become a rap group. Being big fans of artists like, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Chance the Rapper, artists who often write based on their personal experiences to illustrate a general idea, they decided on the name Generation Why, eventually becoming Generation Y. Over the summer of 2013, two new members, Hassan Ricks, better known as Ali, and Johnny Martinez, joined Generation Y, making it a whole. Since the summer of 2013, John Wells has released multiple songs featuring members of Generation Y, local artists, solo tracks, a six-track EP with Generation Y, a beat tape inspired by the death of Billy Watts, a teen producer from Michigan who committed suicide, and produced his entire first project, entitled The KEILANI, which is set to be released February 22nd, 2015, making all of his own cover art throughout the whole process, and making many visits to the home of Scotty Banx, where he recorded almost all of The KEILANI. He says his sound is influenced by artists and groups such as Outkast, 2pac, Butch Dawson, Isaiah Rashad, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, King Krule, Lorine Chia, The Internet, Pink Floyd, Erykah Badu, Jay Electronica, Vince Staples, D'Angelo, and J Dilla, among many others, but he is mainly influenced by his own life, and everything and everyone that surrounds him. In his upcoming project The KEILANI, he tells stories of his life in great detail, some being as simple as trying to talk to a homeless woman when walking home from school, and sitting in a bar eating chicken wings while waiting for his father to drive him home, and some being as complex as his own thoughts of suicide, the effect of drugs on Baltimore, MD, and even his want for a child of his own. All of these subjects, and more, become simple, yet complex, through John Wells' music. The KEILANI is produced completely by John Wells himself, and mixed by Scotty Banx. He describes it as a self portrait. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Brandon Soderberg is the co-author of "I Got a Monster: The Rise and Fall of America's Most Corrupt Police Squad." He reports on police, drugs, and guns. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Intercept, Vice, The Appeal and many other publications. The explosive true story of America's most corrupt police unit, the Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF), which terrorized the city of Baltimore for half a decade. When Baltimore Police Sergeant Wayne Jenkins said he had a monster, he meant he had found a big-time drug dealer - one who he wanted to rob. This is the story of Jenkins and the Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF), a super group of dirty detectives who exploited some of America's greatest problems: guns, drugs, toxic masculinity, and hypersegregation. In the upside-down world of the GTTF, cops were robbers and drug dealers were the perfect victims, because no one believed them. When the federal government finally arrested the GTTF for robbery and racketeering in 2017, the stories of victims began to come out, revealing a vast criminal enterprise operating within the Baltimore Police Department. Cops planted heroin to cover up a fatal crash that resulted from a botched robbery. They stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, faked video evidence, and forged a letter trying to break up the marriage of one of their victims to keep his wife from paying a lawyer. And a homicide detective was killed the day before he was scheduled to testify against the crooked cops. I Got a Monster is the shocking history of the rise and fall of the most corrupt cops in America from Baynard Woods and Brandon Soderberg.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Back in 2010, Mowgli was finishing his final year at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, while a graffiti tagger started running rampant in the town of Blacksburg, VA. After months of seeing the same tags on campus, local businesses, churches, and the same alleyway he walked to class everyday, he decided to do something about it and make the change he wanted to see in the world. After reaching out to the business owner of alleyway, Mowgli was given permission to cover the tags and put up his own positive imagery up utilizing aerosol and hand cut stencils. After completing several pieces on the wall and collaborating with the Town of Blacksburg, he completed his first mural of the entire level of Super Mario 1-1 linking street art with one of Mowgli's favorite past-times. One day as he walked to class, there was a woman walking with her child ahead of him down the alleyway of the mural. The child exclaimed, "Mommy! Mommy! That's Mario!" jumping up and down with excitement as they continued down the alley. It is that moment and that feeling that has lead Mowgli on the path that he is still on today. In 2011, Mowgli moved from Baltimore, MD to Las Vegas, NV for a Marketing and Creative role. After winning a social media contest for emerging artists, he opened his first gallery show, 'Spraypaint & Whiskey' in 2012 at the Amanda Harris Fine Art Gallery. Since then he has showcased his artwork at Las Vegas' First Friday's and completed three additional murals in Las Vegas. While partnering with the community and utilizing his passion for people, Mowgli has had the opportunity to live paint and complete projects for; Life is Beautiful Festival, High Times' Cannabis Cup, Monte Carlo, Yusho, Dos Equis, Zappos, and Sapphire Day & Beach Club. Along with the help of his collectors, supports, and friends; Mowgli has been able to connect his artwork with celebrities and athletes: Conor McGregor, Jeff Bridges, Floyd Mayweather, Slash, Charlie Sheen, Ray Lewis, and Cain Valasquez.Mowgli returned to his hometown of Baltimore, MD in April of 2017. He is a commissioned artist utilizing hand cut stencils and aerosol to bring artwork to everyone. He believes art should be available to all walks of live and everyone should be encouraged to be creative and find their passion. His work is inspired by the people around him and anyone pursing their dreams. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? His five albums: Sound, Forthcoming, JDWP, Passage, and Travel were all produced without the use of sampling, with Patrick playing every note of every instrument. What is perhaps most astounding and perplexing to listeners is that there are actually no instruments…he crafts all of the instruments, and plays every note, electronically. Equally at home performing on stage with his band, behind two turntables, beatboxing, improvising, or playing a Mozart Concerto on stage with orchestra, Wendel Patrick has toured Europe on several occasions and performed throughout the world with renowned spoken word artist and poet Ursula Rucker (The Roots, 4 Hero). In 2014, Wendel Patrick traveled to Australia as a guest lecturer, speaking about music production and entrepreneurship in the arts at The Australian Institute of Music in both Sydney and Melbourne. In 2011, Wendel Patrick co-founded the Baltimore Boom Bap Society, with Erik Spangler (DJ Dubble8) that performs monthly improvised hip hop shows with hand picked musicians and emcees. The group's collaborative performance with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra of Igor Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale was recently named “Best Mesmerizing Performance of 2016” by Baltimore Magazine. Wendel Patrick's music has also been heard across the country on NPR stations, most notably on Out of the Blocks, an award winning radio documentary program he co-produces with radio producer Aaron Henkin for NPR affiliate WYPR that has been featured by the Third Coast International Audio Festival and Hearing Voices as well as on the BBC. Recent performances included a new collaboration between the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Boom Bap Society, on which Patrick's orchestral compositions were performed. An avid photographer and videographer, his photography has been exhibited in several art galleries including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Ralph Arnold Gallery in Chicago. Patrick shoots all of the accompanying documentary photography and videography for Out of the Blocks . Wendel Patrick/Kevin Gift majored in both music and political science at Emory University and earned his M.M. in Piano Performance as a scholarship student at the Northwestern University School of Music in Evanston Illinois. Patrick is a winner of the 2015 Baker Artist Awards' Mary Sawyers Baker grand prize and was a member of the faculty at Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland from 2001 to 2013 teaching piano, introduction to music theory, music history and electronic music production. He has taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art and at Loyola University Chicago where he was Department of Fine and Performing Arts Guest Artist-in-Residence for 2019. Wendel Patrick is currently a professor at The Peabody Music Conservatory - Johns Hopkins University where he teaches “Hip Hop Music Production: History and Practice”, the first course of its kind to be taught at a major traditional music conservatory anywhere in the United States. He has recently been named as the new host of the “Artworks” television program on Maryland Public Television/PBS.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Based in Baltimore, MD and founded in 2016 by Kendal Brown, 228 Grant Street Candle Co. is a black-owned brand featuring unique and curated deeply aromatic fragrance combinations chosen for every mood and every season. The name 228 Grant Street Candle Co. pays homage to the home of Kendal's late maternal grandparents in Danville, VA; a home characterized by simple acts of hospitality and the sharing of things made and cultivated by the founder's grandparents. Kendal came to candle-making after having been on a winding road of professional life as a minister, seminary admissions director and regional staff member of a denomination. Though all fulfilling roles, there was a deep longing for work that engaged more of his creativity, body and free spirit. The brand is currently carried coast-to-coast by nearly 60 retailers and has been featured on The Today Show, ABC World News Tonight and in The Strategist, Cosmopolitan, Essence and Esquire. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? In 2019, Donte Johnson joined the Revival Hotel team as general manager, and set things in motion to turn the hotel into more than just a place to lay your head or to grab a drink. Johnson is committed to ensuring the hotel is a space that is inclusive and welcoming to all. This is done through various efforts as part of the Hotel's social impact focus--- a plan launched in January 2020 with the help of the Georgetown Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation to elevate and support minority-owned businesses and develop and nurture relationships with local organizations in order to make an impact on the local community and beyond. To advance its social impact efforts, Johnson hired the hotel's first-ever Director of Culture & Impact, Jason Bass, who has spearheaded numerous efforts on behalf of the hotel including curated programming and events such as educational workshops, interesting conversations highlighting diverse voices from across the community (in celebration of Black History Month, Women's History Month, around medical cannabis on 4/20, Earth Day, etc.), art pop-ups, etc. Beyond their programming on-site, Revival works to support the Baltimore community through partnerships with local minority businesses, engaging in philanthropic efforts and providing assistance to the community wherever the need made be. Some examples of this include a commitment to engage with local and Black-owned businesses, which has resulted in vendor partnerships with Lor Tush (the hotel purchased a year's worth of toilet paper) and Art of Balance Wellness Spa, both of which are women and Black-owned small businesses in Baltimore, and a soon-to-be-announced partnership with Black Acres Roastery, a Black-owned artisan coffee roaster located in the Highlandtown district of Baltimore, as well as an internship program with Morgan State University and the ongoing fundraising effort with Black-owned label La Fete du Rose (owner is a Baltimore native) to benefit the Baltimore-based Learning to Live Movement, providing travel opportunities for high school students of color. The hotel plans to continue modifying its vendor/supplier list to support local and minority-owned businesses to provide opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses to grow and flourish. Throughout the pandemic, the hotel has provided free meals to those in need, discounted rooms to first responders and donated restaurant space to women- and Black-owned restaurants Urban Oyster and Breaking Bread (both which are still working out of the hotel to this day!). The vocal pop duo Outcalls has been dubbed the “electronic opera queens” of Baltimore. Led by Britt Olsen-Ecker and Melissa Wimbish, both classically-trained musicians, Outcalls creates genre-defying pop music that counters the tired narratives pervading much of today's popular songs. With compelling live shows that feature melodic and harmonic surprises, their voices can tickle your ear hairs one second and shake your teeth the next. No King, the latest EP, features “art pop songs” that unfold in chapters and have a cinematic quality. Unconventional band arrangements layer acoustic and electronic elements to create refreshing, dance-inducing, woman-fronted hits. The duo's latest single "Keep Falling Over" was voted the #1 Song of 2018 by 89.7 WTMD radio listeners in Baltimore.Olsen-Ecker and Wimbish are dedicated to actively building a stronger, more sustainable future for women in the music industry, both publicly and behind the scenes. Their innovative music and lyrical content offers a fresh, feminist perspective. Beyond the music itself, these bandleaders are creative risk-takers seeking greater independence as engineers and sound designers in the recording studio.Outcalls has toured throughout the United States and Canada. Their last single, “Mother,” was released on 2/6/2020.“With their glittering get-ups, engaging social media presence, and ambitious attitude, Peabody grads Britt Olsen-Ecker and Melissa Wimbish have catapulted themselves onto the local arts scene and created their very own genre along the way.” –Baltimore MagazineListen to our new single "Mother" here. Kotic Couture, a dynamic rapper and songwriter based in Baltimore City, isn’t here to fit the mold. Hailing from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and as a vivacious gender non-conforming person, they’re too busy breaking the mold. As an artist, Kotic Couture (pronounced kāˈädik ko͞oˈto͝or), came of age in Baltimore’s underground art movement and club scene, becoming a prominent fixture in some of the city’s hottest night time venues. Their music — a blend of high energy club, hip hop, and poignant lyricism — is infused with spoken-word poetry. They have said that they were drawn to Baltimore club music because it had less barriers for expression than more conventional hip hop arenas. That much is true. After performing before in years past, in 2018, Baltimore Pride invited them to perform because the city said it couldn’t happen without them. Azealia Banks, Cupcakke, and BBYMUTHA all share Kotic Couture as an opening act in common. Babe City Records, who released their first album “Diary of a Dreamer” in 2020, called them “introspective and buoyant.” Baltimore Magazine said they, “showcase a creative, colorful versatility, that’s all their own.” Neon mesh clad, complete with matching lipstick, and colored braid extensions, Kotic Couture is a force. The likes of which we haven’t quite seen before. Give their music a listen, and see for yourself. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Sydney Jamie Allen, aka aBaltimoregriot, is a visual storyteller who is both a native and current resident of Baltimore. Allen uses portrait and documentary photography to highlight the individuals and community spaces of black folk living in Baltimore. By doing so, Allen is able to recreate the narrative of life in Baltimore city. Today, a birthday tribute to our dear friend Gil Sandler. This Sunday, Gil would have celebrated his 96th birthday. His Baltimore Stories have delighted WYPR listeners for a decade and a half . Today, we share with you an interview recorded about six months prior to his final appearance on our show, in June of 2017, as we approached the 15th anniversary of the Baltimore Stories. This is the first time this interview has been broadcast.
On today's Baltimore Stories, Gil tells us about a transportation option that allowed riders to take in the ----charms of Charm City---- from a high perch.
It’s time to remember someone who understood better than anyone, the stories that echo around Baltimore’s stoops, kitchen tables and lunch counters. Gilbert Sandler, whose “Baltimore Stories” have embellished WYPR’s airwaves Friday mornings for 15 years, died of cancer this week at age 95.This morning we listen back to an interview with Gil Sandler, about his experience on the Baltimore City College debate team. The full show is here. Here is a link to the “The Gilbert Sandler Fund for Speech and Debate at City College----.
We come to you today with a heavy heart. Yesterday afternoon Gilbert Sandler, the great writer and raconteur died, after a long illness. No one knew Baltimore or wrote about its charms, its quirks, and its characters as well as Gilbert Sandler. He was a gifted and spirited story teller, with a great ear for the rhythm and the arc of the stories he told, whether or not he was writing a book, a newspaper column, or reading one of his popular Baltimore Stories here on WYPR. He began his career as a radio personality in 2003. Long before that, he had found his voice as a writer. Now, at the age of 80, he discovered his voice as an actual teller of tales. In all, he produced about 175 Baltimore Stories, with which he has delighted us every Friday morning for more than 15 years. Each one was beautifully and masterfully designed, with a graceful arc, and, very importantly, an abiding respect for the many quirky and colorful characters he introduced us to.Because so many Gilbert Sandler Baltimore Stories were about funny and often oddball people and events, it’s easy to overlook how important they are as documents that enlighten our understanding of our town in a fast-changing and tumultuous period in our history. In telling the individual stories of the people who populated and animated Baltimore from roughly the 1920s through the 1970s, Gil provided a window into the collective soul of our city, and like all great story-tellers, in so doing, he provided a window into our own souls, too. Gil’s stories were rife with vigor and energy and surprise. A seasoned hand at writing for print, in his ninth decade, Gil quickly learned how to write for the listener, not just for the reader. He understood naturally the particular potential for magic that can occur when a human voice connects with a human ear, and with a human heart. Gil connected with people from a very early age. He always said that he had been on the streets of Baltimore since he was five years old. That was in 1928. He fell in love with the city as a child, and he stayed in love with it until the moment of his last breath yesterday afternoon. He called his particular approach “Urban Journalism.” He was fascinated with the sinew and pulse of our city and the various paths that people took to fame, or infamy. And he wrote about all of his subjects, famous or not, with an unfailing decency and a deep and unmovable respect for their dignity. The great writer E.L. Doctorow once said that stories are important because they “propose life as something of moral consequence.” Gil understood this viscerally, and with unbounded compassion. In telling the stories of people and events in our community, Gilbert Sandler told the story of the 20th century, and how Baltimore shaped, and was shaped by, the American story. Over the last several years, my wife Linell and I and our friend Bonnie Legro delighted in having dinner with Gil and his dear friend, Sue Hess. We would ensconce ourselves at various restaurants, and inevitably, the evenings would end with singing. Often, but not always, these impromptu concerts delighted our fellow diners. We sang song after song from the “old days,” the ballads and romps and ditties from the time that Gil had come of age. He loved to sing, and he loved to be in the middle of the mix.Gil sang the way he wrote, with glee and a broad smile and the warmest of hearts. Last year, while he was recording one of his Baltimore stories, he treated our director and engineer Luke Spicknall to this bit of song:----I've stayed around, and played around, this old town too long. Summer's almost gone, yea, winter's comin' on.I've stayed around, and played around, this old town too long, And I feel like I've got to travel on...----Gilbert Sandler has now, to our great sadness, traveled on. His Baltimore Stories have ben archived at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, and we will continue to air them, for the foreseeable future, every Friday morning here on WYPR. After the holidays, we’ll share with you a longer remembrance of our dear friend, here on Midday. Gilbert Sandler was 95 years old.
On this Friday before Christmas 2017, a spritely and indefatigable 95-year-old raconteur joins Tom in Studio A. His name is Gilbert Sandler, and as WYPR listeners well know, Gil has been telling his Baltimore Stories on this station for the past 15 years. On this particular Friday afternoon, as he prepares to retire the series next Friday, the story he tells is the story behind this popular and enduring narrative.Gil and Tom are joined by Fred Rasmussen of the Baltimore Sun, a longtime friend and associate who provides a retrospective on the many quirky and fascinating characters Gil has introduced us to over the years.Next Friday, December 29th, will mark the end of Gilbert Sandler’s remarkable narrative run. That’s when we’ll hear Gil’s final Baltimore story, which he's already recorded. Fans will be pleased to know that Gil will remain on the WYPR airwaves in the New Year, as we transition to The Best of Gil Sandler’s Baltimore Stories. Stay tuned!
In part two of Dan's conversation with Gilbert Sandler, the teller of Baltimore tales talks about Baltimore after World War II and through the second half of the 20th Century. He gives his views of Baltimore yesterday and today, and takes a couple of nostalgic side trips to old Orioles Park and the Club Charles. Sandler is the writer and host of Baltimore Stories on WYPR. For more than 30 years, he entertained and informed readers of the Sun with his Baltimore Glimpses column, with descriptions of the way things used to be in the city. He is the author of several books about his hometown.Links:http://wypr.org/people/gil-sandler
Baltimore is home to one of the country’s largest Jewish communities, and beginning tonight they’ll observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish year. So today we look inside Baltimore’s Orthodox Jewish community, through the words of author Eli W. Schlossberg. He talks about his new book, “My Shtetl Baltimore, Stories and Recollections by a Native Son,---- a compilation of anecdotes about a lifetime in Baltimore.
In July 1942, American prisoners of war were performing Julius Caesar on a makeshift stage in Burma at the same time that the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra played the Hippodrome Theatre on Eutaw Street. In June 1944, more than 3,000 U.S. Marines died capturing the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean while fans back in Baltimore were cheering the International League Orioles in their successful bid for a championship. These are just two of the startling juxtapositions that Gilbert Sandler writes about in his account of life on the home front in Baltimore during World War II. Rarely seen photographs from the Baltimore Sun, the News-American, and the Afro-American bring to life the rich, personal anecdotes of wartime Baltimoreans and transport readers back to an indelible era of Baltimore history.Born and raised in Baltimore, and a service member in the Navy during WWII, Gilbert Sandler is author of Jewish Baltimore: A Family Album and the award-winning Small Town Baltimore: An Album of Memories. Sandler hosts the popular "Baltimore Stories" series on WYPR-FM. Recorded On: Tuesday, September 27, 2011
