Episode 662: The Exorcism of Roland Doe

Morbid

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2025 69:24

In the winter of 1973, director William Friedkin released his iconic horror classic The Exorcist, a film that has shocked and terrified audiences for more than fifty years. Based on William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name, The Exorcist tells the story of a young girl who becomes possessed by a demonic entity, and the two Catholic priests who attempt to exorcise the demon. Even more terrifying than the content of the film, however, was the fact that The Exorcist was supposedly based on a true story. William Peter Blatty had always stated The Exorcist was based on a supposedly true story he'd heard while at Georgetown University. According to Blatty, a Maryland boy, known as “Roland Doe,” had become possessed by a demonic entity and, among other things, underwent a negative personality change and began exhibiting impossible abilities including an ability to speak Latin. It was only through the dedication of one Jesuit priest that the boy was eventually freed of his possession and went on to live a normal life.Since the release of both the novel and the film in the 1970s, a great deal more has been learned about “Roland Doe” and the supposedly true story that inspired The Exorcist, raising many questions about the veracity of the original claims. Who was “Roland Doe,” and was he truly possessed by a demon, or just the intense emotions of an adolescent boy?Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAllen, Thomas. 1993. What a wonderful day to talk about The Exorcist. This week Mike, Brian, and Stephen start our discussion on one of the foundational films in modern horror, 1973's The Exorcist. For the first half of our two parts on this title, your hosts share their initial reactions to this masterwork, as well as how our thoughts on the film have evolved as we've grown older. From there we take a deep dive into the history of the film, including a look at its architects, director William Friedken and writer William Peter Blatty. We explore the exorcism case that inspired Blatty to write his novel, and the challenges in adapting the film without “creating a commercial for the Catholic Church” in Friedken's view. We discuss the brilliant cast, Dick Smith's astonishing makeup and the standout locations. From there we talk about the “curse” of The Exorcist as well as the unconventional and unsafe methods Friedken often employed that put his performers in harm's way. Finally, we explore the cultural impact of The Exorcist on its release as well as its place in horror's pantheon more than fifty years later. It's one of our largest, most in-depth episodes to date, and its only the beginning.

It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. Introduction   The exorcism genre holds a unique place in horror, often drawing on themes of innocence, spiritual warfare, and patriarchal power structures. While its narratives are typically formulaic, revolving around a “possessed” figure (often a young girl) and priests arriving to cast out the demon, the genre also reflects broader societal anxieties about bodily autonomy, religious authority, and family dynamics. Many exorcism films lean heavily on cultural tropes, with a few standing out for their engagement with more complex themes or departures from genre norms.    Today, we'll explore five significant exorcism films, from iconic classics to new interpretations, analyzing how each interacts with the genre's conventions and challenges them to varying degrees. Here's our list:   The Exorcist  William Friedkin's The Exorcist (1973) is the foundational work of exorcism horror, causing a stir for its visceral portrayal of demonic possession and controversial religious imagery. The infamous production faced numerous setbacks, often seen as reflecting the turmoil depicted onscreen. This film's critical reception and lasting impact reveal how effectively it tapped into societal anxieties of the 1970s.     Exorcist III Written and directed by The Exorcist author William Peter Blatty, Exorcist III (1990) continues the narrative with a fresh perspective, emphasizing psychological horror over shock value. Blatty's direction draws on philosophical themes, creating one of the genre's most introspective entries. Many consider it a more layered and, in some ways, superior work to Friedkin's original. The Exorcism of Emily Rose  The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) marks a genre revival that experiments with the "based on a true story" approach. This film combines courtroom drama with horror, exploring themes of faith, science, and institutional power. It questions societal definitions of sanity and the legitimacy of religious experiences in a secular world, creating a nuanced discussion on mental health and belief.   Late Night with the Devil The newest on our list, Late Night with the Devil (2023), departs from genre norms by framing possession within the setting of a fictional 1970s talk show. This film is a genre-bending take, blending exorcism horror with cultural satire on sensationalized media, reminiscent of the era's late-night television programming. It plays with the exorcism format while commenting on the media as a modern “exorcist,” claiming to expose dark secrets.   Il Demonio (The Demon) As one of the earliest entries in exorcism horror, Il Demonio (1963) is an Italian film often overlooked. It visualizes the exorcism genre's gendered dynamics, with a narrative that intersects spousal abuse, mental illness, and patriarchal control. The film uses demonic possession as a metaphor for the internalized violence faced by women under societal and marital oppression, offering a critical lens on traditional power structures.   These films offer a window into not only horror but broader social and cultural anxieties. Each one engages with themes of power, authority, and the societal “other,” reminding us of the genre's unique capacity to critique and unsettle dominant narratives.   Check out our new bi-weekly series, "The Crisis Papers" here: https://www.patreon.com/bitterlakepresents/shop   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. Both films feature visions of Hell's intrusion onto earth; two competing and complementary visions of evil, one from a gay British man and the second from a devout American Catholic. Will, Hesse and Brendan go deep on these films, highlighting in Hellraiser some of the most ghoulish practical effects ever put to screen, and in Exorcist III dissecting one of the most infamous jump-scares in film history.

On The Head of the Serpent 1987).

THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta The Exorcist (1973) A visiting actress in Washington, D.C., notices dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior and physical make-up of her 12-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, a young priest at nearby Georgetown University begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother's terminal sickness. A frail, elderly priest recognizes the necessity for a show-down with an old demonic enemy. The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin from a screenplay by William Peter Blatty, based on his 1971 novel of the same name. The film stars Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Jason Miller, and Linda Blair. The story follows the demonic possession of a young girl and her mother's attempt to rescue her through an exorcism by two Catholic priests. Blatty, who also produced, and Friedkin, his choice as director, had difficulty casting the film. Their choice of relative unknowns Burstyn, Blair, and Miller, instead of major stars, drew opposition from Warner Bros. Pictures executives. Principal photography was also difficult, taking place in both hot deserts and refrigerated sets. Many cast and crew were injured, some died, and unusual accidents delayed shooting. Production took twice as long as scheduled and cost almost three times the initial budget; the many mishaps have led to a belief that the film was cursed. The Exorcist was released in 24 theaters in the United States on December 26, 1973. Reviews were mixed, but audiences waited in long lines during cold weather; the sold-out shows were even more profitable for Warner, since they had booked it into those theaters under four wall distribution rental agreements, the first time a major studio had done that. Some viewers suffered adverse physical reactions, fainting or vomiting to shocking scenes such as a realistic cerebral angiography. Many children were allowed to see it, leading to charges that the MPAA ratings board had accommodated Warner by giving the film an R rating instead of the X rating to ensure the troubled production its commercial success. Several cities attempted to ban it outright or prevent children from attending. The cultural conversation around the film helped it become the first horror film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as nine others. Blatty won Best Adapted Screenplay, while the sound engineers took Best Sound. It has had several sequels and was the highest-grossing R-rated horror film (unadjusted for inflation) until It. The Exorcist had a significant influence on pop culture[3][4] and several publications regard it as one of the greatest horror films ever made. In 2010, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."[5]

The definitive, fascinating story of the scariest film ever made and its enduring impact in Hollywood and beyond-from the director's biographer comes a must-read for horror fans and cinema buffs, just in time for the movie's 50th anniversary and the release of the first movie in a new Exorcist trilogy. Includes a foreword by John Russo, author and cowriter of the seminal horror film Night of the Living Dead. On December 26, 1973, The Exorcist was released. Within days it had become legend. Moviegoers braved hours-long lines in winter weather to see it. Some audience members famously fainted or vomited. Half a century later, the movie that both inspired and transcends the modern horror genre has lost none of its power to terrify and unsettle. The Exorcist Legacy reveals the complete story of this cultural phenomenon, from the real-life exorcism in 1949 Maryland that inspired William Peter Blatty's bestselling novel on which the movie is based, to its many sequels, prequels, TV series, and homages. Nat Segaloff, biographer of the film's director, William Friedkin, draws on original interviews with cast, crew, and participants as well as revelations from personal papers to present an intriguing and surprising new view of the making of the movie, and its aftermath. Segaloff also examines as never before the keys to the movie's enduring appeal. Friedkin and Blatty's goal was far more ambitious than making a scary movie; they aimed to make people "think about the concept of good and evil." The Exorcist succeeds, and then some, not just by creating on-screen scares, but by challenging viewers' deepest personal beliefs-and fears.

Tale as old as time. No, not Beauty and the Beast: a story of bestiality and Stockholm Syndrome thinly veiled as a romance for the ages and cleaned up and sanitized by Disney for your viewing pleasure. No not that one, I am talking about a much older story: that of the eternal struggle of good vs evil. This theme is woven in the threads of almost all our stories at some level. If you are a Christian or even if you are familiar with Christian iconography, these are personified as the omnipotent creator and one and only God and Satan, the fallen angel and devil himself. In 1971, a humorist named William Peter Blatty published a horror novel that would be turned into a movie often dubbed the most terrifying film of all time based on this exact struggle. That novel and subsequent movie was, of course, The Exorcist. Spoiler alert: The Exorcist tells the story of an innocent young girl who becomes possessed by a demon after she uses a Ouija board and of the Catholic priests who exorcise said demon after must persistence and turmoil. Good triumphs over evil and there is much rejoicing. Where on Earth did Blatty come up with such a dark and disturbing story? Well, as it turns out, he did not need to look too far. The idea actually came from of an article he read in a Washington newspaper. This article was about the supposed real-life possession and exorcism of a young boy in 1949. Blatty was all in – he changed it from a boy to a girl and dramatized the events and the horror movie industry was never the same. So why are we at the Some Weird Podcast doing a whole episode about this? Simple: the real story was far more terrifying. Nowadays, the tagline “Based on a true story” is pretty loose but if we are to believe the diaries of the priests who were there in 1949, we can certainly say that truth is stranger than fiction or, if you are a Newfoundlander like us, we can certainly say that true story that inspired The Exorcist is some weird.
