As we wait for our next weekly show to begin we take a moment to talk about the first season of Pluribus, the latest program from the creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Those are two of the best series ever - is Pluribus in the running? And will we get into a very lengthy argument over a nitpicky detail in the show's premise? The answer to both those questions is the same. Be aware, this is spoiler heavy! Before that: a Doomsday theory. Stranger Things. The Martin Supremacy. Dark and ironic trivia. Plus, which of Derek's buddies would be best in an escape room. If you don't care about that skip right to 51:05.Next week we're watching The Love Boat season one episode four, starring Bill Bixby. Yes, The Love Boat. It's streaming for free on Pluto.Want your questions answered on the show? Send an email to ask.cinema.sangha@gmail.com and ask away, and ask about pretty much anything at all. Make sure your subject line contains the name of the show on which you want your question answered. One question per email, please, but feel free to send in multiple emails!Want to show the world you support this weird podcast? Reposted from Wax Episodic, which you can find at: https://podcastica.com/podcast/wax-episodic — Another killer episode, with Norm posing as a genetically engineered supermanager, Hank's montage of exploding mice brains, Lucy apparently recounting all of A Christmas Carol to Cooper against his will, or the tragic story of Maximus' losing his parents, among other things. It's sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen! IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, Pennywise stalks the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elme Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed. Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. Though Jane Austen went largely unrecognized in her own lifetime—four of her six novels were published anonymously, and the other two only after her death—her name is now synonymous with the period romance. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz choose their personal favorites from her œuvre—“Emma,” “Persuasion,” and “Mansfield Park”—and attempt to get to the heart of her appeal. Then they look at how Austen herself has been characterized by readers and critics. We know relatively little about Austen as a person, but that hasn't stopped us from trying to understand her psyche. It's a difficult task in part because of the double-edged quality to her writing: Austen, although renowned for her love stories, is also a keen satirist of the Regency society in which these relationships play out. “I think irony is so key, but also sincerity,” Schwartz says. “These books are about total realism and total fantasy meeting in a way that is endlessly alluring.”This episode originally aired on June 12, 2025. Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Pride and Prejudice,” by Jane Austen“Persuasion,” by Jane Austen“Emma,” by Jane Austen“Mansfield Park,” by Jane Austen“Sense and Sensibility,” by Jane Austen“Northanger Abbey,” by Jane Austen“Virginia Woolf on Jane Austen” (The New Republic)Emily Nussbaum on “Breaking Bad” and the “Bad Fan” (The New Yorker)“How to Misread Jane Austen,” by Louis Menand (The New Yorker)“Miss Austen” (2025—)“Pride and Prejudice” (2005)Scenes Through Time's “Mr. Darcy Yearning for 10 Minutes” SupercutNew episodes drop every Thursday. Reposted from Wax Episodic, which you can find at: https://podcastica.com/podcast/wax-episodic — An exciting finale that mostly delivered on what we asked for: A satisfying conclusion with some intriguing possibilities for the future of this series. Nice! Thanks to all of you from both Shawn and Jason for taking this ride with us! It turned out better than we both hoped, and we loved the back-and-forth with many of you guys along the way. Should Welcome to Derry be renewed for a second season, we plan to be back talking about it again!  Until then, please check out one or more of the other shows we cover. I (Jason) am so pleased with how each and every one is turning out, and I'm sure at least some of you would enjoy one or more of them. They are…. Other Wax Episodic shows: We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted shows: Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It's sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Showrun by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Podcast hosted by Jason and Karen! Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), and with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi. Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. A greedy corporate tech overlord transfers the consciousness of a group of terminally ill children into highly performant synth bodies. And the Xenomorph is in it, too. Also, Tim Olyphant! There's a mystery afoot on today's episode of Script Apart – and that mystery is how you write a film like Wake Up Dead Man, the new Knives Out movie from my guest today, Rian Johnson. How do you craft a whodunit that's simultaneously gripping, hilarious and loaded with weighty reflections on religion's use as a weapon of fear in our current political climate? In the words of Benoit Blanc, it “makes no damn sense” to me, “Compels me, though.”Which is why it was such a treat to ask the man himself. Rian's a filmmaker who you might know from 2005 high school noir Brick, 2008's The Brothers Bloom or the fantastic 2012 sci-fi Looper. He directed one of the best episodes of TV this side of the millennium in the form of Breaking Bad's ‘Fly' episode, and created the brilliant Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne. In 2019, he wrote and directed Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig as a Southern-accented sleuth, which was a huge sensation. A sequel followed in 2022, as part of a major deal with Netflix. And somewhere amid all that, he made a low-budget indie that probably completely passed under your radar because it was barely discussed upon release. Let me just check my notes here… Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Never heard of it personally.Wake Up Dead Man is maybe his most personal and politically-charged film yet, though, as you'll hear in this conversation. Rian's relationship with religion is… well, it's complicated. In this spoiler conversation, he tells me about his lapsed faith and story of growing up in the Church… before leaving it. It's a story that totally altered my perspective on The Last Jedi – a movie about lapsed faith – and shone a fascinating light on this latest adventure in the life of Benoit Blanc. We get into the overlap between the “cult of personality” church figurehead, Wicks, in Wake Up Dead Man and the politicians in our newspaper headlines each morning right now – many of whom position themselves of Christians and preach messages of fear; them against us. And Rian also tells me what the future perhaps looks like for him, twenty years on from Brick – the next steps in his storytelling to come.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. In Producing Precarity (NYU Press, 2025) Curtis Marez examines the television industry's practice of “offshoring” production to impoverished sites within the US. Marez, focuses on state efforts to attract film and TV producers to poor places with tax incentives, discounted public lands, and subsidized infrastructures. He argues that these efforts result in the redistribution of wealth from poor people of color, Indigenous people, and other taxpayers to Los Angeles-based media makers, while also diverting money that could be used for education and health care to the wealthy. The popular series produced in these places, such as Breaking Bad, The Watchmen, Lovecraft County, The Walking Dead, and Vida, are praised by critics and awards organizations and highlighted by streaming services for challenging genre, casting, and narrative conventions. However, many of these shows rely on racialized and gendered low-wage labor for production, and diversity, equity, and inclusion representations can sometimes perpetuate repression, such as depicting police as diversity champions. Producing Precarity examines how contemporary streaming shows from these areas promote racial inequality in ideology and content, as well as materially through their local production methods, and perceptually through streaming distribution modes that discourage viewers from understanding how TV is made. Marez also provides examples of local resistance, including movements against a police training center and a film studio in Atlanta, as well as anti-gentrification movements in Latinx neighborhoods of LA. This week, Cian and Kev dive into the beginning of the end for Stranger Things, breaking down the first half of the final season — what works, what doesn't, and whether Netflix's last true monoculture can stick the landing. From there, Kev introduces Pluribus, the unexpected and deeply strange new sci-fi series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, starring Rhea Seehorn — a bold creative swing that's flying under the radar. The conversation then turns sour as Amazon is caught using AI-generated English dubs for anime, sparking a wider discussion about AI, voice acting, and why this tech keeps making everything worse. A thoughtful, opinionated episode about endings, originality, and why supporting real artists matters more than ever.

Reposted from Wax Episodic, which you can find at: https://podcastica.com/podcast/wax-episodic — Fantastic episode this week. As IT stokes fear that drives friends and family apart, a few pockets of warmth, love, and connection bloom, and the show weaves it all together in a beautiful (and unsettling) way.  Next up on IT: Welcome to Derry: S1E7 “The Black Spot”. Let us know your thoughts! You can email or send a voice message to weallfloat@podcastica.com.
