Jack Viertel has quietly shaped Broadway for decades, guiding landmark productions from behind the scenes while rarely stepping into the spotlight himself. In this conversation, he opens up about the art and the business of theatre, reflecting on how shows get chosen, how failures and successes both shape a career, and why Broadway has always been in a cycle of decline and rebirth. We also wander into the bigger picture — what the industry is doing right, where it stumbles, and what it will take to keep live theatre thriving for future generations. Of course, Jack's influence isn't limited to the stage. He's also a writer with a brand-new crime thriller, The Glass Eel, co-written with his son Josh. Described as “Breaking Bad on the coast of Maine,” the novel dives into the murky world of baby eels, environmental stakes, and the dark edges of human ambition. Jack shares how the story came to life, what it was like to collaborate with family, and why storytelling — in any form — remains at the heart of his work. Jack Viertel served for decades as Senior Vice President and Creative Director at Jujamcyn Theaters, helping shepherd productions including Into the Woods, M. Butterfly, Angels in America, The Producers, Book of Mormon, and Dear Evan Hansen to Broadway. He was also Artistic Director of New York City Center's Encores! series, and is the author of The Secret Life of the American Musical, Broadway Melody, and now The Glass Eel, co-written with his son. Two fan favorites from the Star Trek universe—Brent Spiner (Data, Lore, Dr. Soong) and John de Lancie (Q), took the stage at FanX Salt Lake City to swap stories, tease each other, and reflect on careers that stretch far beyond the Final Frontier. What unfolded was a lively, heartfelt, and hilarious panel that explored everything from Breaking Bad and My Little Pony to truth-telling in acting and the evolving humanity of their iconic characters. Houston Roots and Astroworld Memories: Spiner began with stories about Houston, Texas, and their early days performing at Astroworld. What started as gunfighting shows quickly evolved into creative theater, with Spiner even co-writing a “medicine show” alongside fellow actor Trey Wilson. The pair reminisced about the unpredictability of live performance and the strange lessons learned under the summer sun. Breaking Bad and the Outsider Experience: De Lancie also shared his time on Breaking Bad, where he immediately sensed he was stepping into something special. “You can tell almost immediately whether the show is really clicking when you walk on the set. Everybody was playing at a high level.” As a guest actor, he described the balancing act of finding his place in a family that had already been working together for years. Star Trek used philosophy and morality as story engines: Spiner pointed to The Measure of a Man as a defining episode about personhood and slavery, while de Lancie emphasized Q's dynamic with Picard as a constant battle of wills. Both acknowledged the audience's role in shaping how they now see their characters and themselves. “We could not do our work properly if we went up there to lie. We actually are looking for the truth.” – John de Lancie Want more exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes stories from the people who bring your favorite characters to life? ¿Cocinamos metanfetamina junto a Heisenberg? Pues venga.

This week Dan and Chris take another break from their normal structure to continue our season by season retrospective of Breaking Bad. Is this show as good as history remembers it? Does it hold up to it's reputation? Let's discuss!
Chris Distefano and Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad 3/24The final year of my radio journey holds a special place in my heart, made even more poignant by the loss of my cherished friends, Carl Ruiz and Vic Henley. Reflecting on that time, I rediscovered the pure passion and exhilaration that drew me to radio in the first place. Amidst the chaos and challenges, we found endless moments of hilarity and camaraderie. Alongside Carl, Vic, and Sherrod Small, we shared unforgettable experiences both on and off the airwaves, our tight-knit bond shining through every episode. That year also marked Carl Ruiz's meteoric rise to stardom, inspiring me to launch the Opie Radio podcast with him. I'm immensely grateful to Erock, Clubsoda Kenny, Paul, and Louis for joining us on this wild ride. Get ready to dive into the rollercoaster of emotions—the highs, the lows, and the laugh-out-loud moments—that defined my last year in radio.
You've experienced life at the highest level: private planes, exclusive circles, red carpet events, and the luxury that money can buy. But beyond the accolades and access, have you ever found yourself asking, 'Is this all there is?' There's a silent struggle that often shadows success. Behind the velvet ropes and curated lifestyles, many high-profile individuals wrestle with an inner void—an ache that no amount of wealth, recognition, or adrenaline can truly silence. When the applause quiets and the entourage leaves, the stillness can feel suffocating. For some, that emptiness is numbed by alcohol or distraction. The result? A slow unraveling. Sometimes, it takes losing everything you thought mattered to discover what truly does. That was David Christensen's journey. Once immersed in the Hollywood elite and high-adrenaline adventures, yes, even Titanic exploration, David found himself at a crossroads as the lifestyle he built began to unravel.
