This week it's The Art (Nouveau) Show! Flowers, peacocks and sensuous drapes. Bejewelled women entwined in billowing hair and that classic black outline, that turns the dreamy into the bold – the NEW. Despite what we may think about the arts and crafts that came out of Belgium, France and  Czechia at the turn of the nineteenth century, Art Nouveau was considered to be an ultra-modern aesthetic. One artist who defined the style is Alphonse Mucha. We hear from Mucha's great-grandson Marcus Mucha and Mucha Foundation curator Tomoko Sato, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales exhibition Alphonse Mucha: Spirit of Art Nouveau. In South Australia artists like Maude Vizard-Wholohan were part of a newly empowered generation of female art school graduates who produced Art Nouveau designs while living in the first Australian state where women could vote (and the third in the world). Rebecca Evans is curator of design and decorative arts at the Art Gallery of South Australia, and traces the legacy of these artists. This first went to air Wed 19 Jun 2024

In honor of Alfonse Mucha's birthday, I thought I would post an encore of my mini episode about the poster that catapulted him to fame. In December 1894, Alphonse Mucha just happened to be in the print shop checking some proofs for a friend, when in walked an actress, Sarah Bernhardt in need of posters for her upcoming play. All of the regular artists she worked with were off for the holidays leaving Mucha as her only option. It was a tremendous stroke of luck for both of them as Mucha created a stunning poster that not only flattered the actress, it caught the attention of collectors all around Paris. People were cutting the posters off of displays and bribing the poster hangers so they could get copies, and the Mucha style laid the foundation for Art Nouveau.

This episode's guest is someone who has a background as an artist and has been working in galleries specialised on the period between 1880 and 1920 hosting exhibitions for more than 20 years, Thomas Negovan. Thomas has just published an amazing book on the pinnacle artist of the Art Nouveau movement, Alphonse Mucha and his masterpiece ‘Le Pater: Alphonse Mucha's Symbolist Masterpiece and the Lineage of Mysticism', originally illustrated and interpreted in the most occult and hermetic ways by the artist himself. Thomas was born and raised in a very working class area of the south side of Chicago. From his childhood and teenage years on the post-industrial-revolution period of the late 19th century resonated with him intensely especially because artists of this period expressed a deep interest in mystical thinking and metaphysics. His interest in this period made Thomas even release a wax recording produced without electricity and he cooperated with an artist to create an album cover with wet plate photography. In the show break you'll be able to listen to an amazing piece from the album that has been recorded just as if we were still in the late 19th century. Poster for an evening of theater honoring Sarah Bernhardt (1896) Zodiac calendar for La Plume (1897) Growing up, Thomas soon became fascinated with science fiction and fantasy literature and of course with the illustrations featured in those books by artists who were deeply influenced by Art Nouveau. Later he worked for a gallery with a specialisation on this period of time and learned that it was very difficult to get originals. In 1999 Thomas founded the Century Guild Museum of Art in California focusing on the research, preservation and exhibition of Art Nouveau and Symbolist work from Germany, Austria, France and Italy from the Industrial Revolution through the Weimar Republic. In this episode we will shed some light on this era of decadence and exhaustion after WWI and how the occult revival that started in the 1860s influenced the arts and vice versa. Of course, we will go in depths on why Thomas intended to publish this incredible book ‘Le Pater' in the first place, discuss why Alphonse Mucha's work seems to be ubiquitous but his name not as much, what exactly characterises his art and why whole generations of comic book artists seem to be obsessed with him. PLEASE CLICK AND VISIT THE FOLLOWING WEBSITES TO GET ALL THE INFORMATION ON THOSE EDITIONS OF  "LE PATER", ON THOMAS NEGOVAN AND ON THE CENTURY GUILD www.lepater.com www.thomasnegovan.com www.centuryguild.net Understandably, ‘Le Pater' will take up quite a lot of space in our conversation, we will talk about its creational process and shed some light on Mucha's motivation to present a series of artworks that have a highly occult and hermetic background. Thomas' edition of the ‘Le Pater' will be our guide to understand Mucha's intentions with his art as he spent 20 years of research on a popular artist whose masterpiece was not present so much nowadays. As a publisher Thomas wanted to recreate the original print as closely as possible, so the result is simply mind-blowing presenting itself in a 12''x16'' format (hardcover and limited edition, already available) and a slightly smaller 9''x12'' format (paperback, available in March). Don't miss out on the publisher's website!

Whether photographed in a coffin or depicted on an Art Nouveau poster, the French actor Sarah Bernhardt knew exactly how to get maximum publicity. Although her first outings on the stage were unremarkable, she refined her skills and rose to become the leading actor of her generation and a world-famous name. Her life off-stage was a further source of endless fascination, her eccentric and occasionally arrogant behaviour only adding to her allure. Her critics saw her as manipulative and hackneyed. For her admirers, seeing Bernhardt ‘die' on stage was a moment to be treasured for ever. Today we might find the late 19th-century acting style captured on film and sound recordings affected. But her legacy is being re-evaluated, as a woman who took control of her own destiny. Bridget Kendall charts Sarah Bernhardt's life and career with John Stokes, Emeritus Professor of Modern British Literature at King's College London, who's published widely on theatre history, including The French Actress and Her English Audience; Victoria Duckett, Senior Lecturer in Screen and Design at Deakin University in Melbourne and the author of Seeing Sarah Bernhardt: Performance and Silent Film; and Sharon Marcus, the Orlando Harriman Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Her 2019 book The Drama of Celebrity is an exploration of the processes that propel a figure such as Sarah Bernhardt to global fame. He joins me in this special bonus podcast episode to discuss the work of Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), especially his incredibly symbolic and deeply esoteric masterpiece, Le Pater. Mucha was a Czech painter, illustrator and artist who lived in Paris during the Art Nouveau period. His distinctive style is recognized today as being among the defining works of that period, and is probably best known for his posters promoting stage actress Sara Bernhardt. However, Mucha was also a Moravian Christian and Freemason, and his esoteric interests and mystical pursuits enfused the artwork of his incredible masterpiece, Le Pater. This is such an important piece of esoteric artwork that I agreed to produce this bonus episode to help Thomas get the word out about his Kickstarter to produce a paperback version of his book on Le Pater.

In this Quackcast we cover the Importance of good linework in comics and different line techniques such as Herge's Ligne claire, the traditional thick line for characters and thin for everything else as exemplified in the work of Mucha, variable line widths as in Manga, solid blacks like in American comics, and complex lines like Durer or Hyena Hell. I really seriously thought I could get an entire Quackcast out of the concept and techniques of linework, but honestly I was struggling… Okay, so linework constitutes the skeleton that most comics are built on, with the notable exception of painted comics, photo comics, 3D and vector comic among others… But for most comics line is a pretty essential element. There are a lot of different techniques involved in the use of lines. Herge popularised “ligne claire”, which means that all lines have the same thickness and that there's no line shading. A popular style that I was taut was to have thick lines around characters and overlapping elements, with thin lines for internals and backgrounds. This is popular in a lot of manga, US comics and famously the work of Alphonse Mucha. Part of my technique on Pinky TA involves making my lines grey, so that when I set the line layer to “multiply”, the lines take on some of the background colours beneath them and don't show up as darkly as traditional black lines. The work of Hyena Hell on the Hub is interesting for her use of very complex internal shading line to build up texture and shapes, this can also be seen in the works of Albrecht Durer. Manga is notable for its extensive use of very stylised shading, crisp lines and the use of variable line widths for outlines, while American comics make heavy use of solid blacks for areas of shadow, basically extending the width of the line as far and as solidly as it can go. How do YOU approach your linework? The music for this week by Gunwallace is for The Wallachian Library. "It's not just skill.  It's also how you present your work and talk about your work that adds to your creativity." "Taking it away from my computer and putting it into the world always helps me contextualize what I do and to see what it means to others and understand how that work is received outside of my own little bubble." "I've actually learned to turn off that part of my brain to not think too much about how something will be received because you never really know." "What I would tell myself if I could go back in time is to just not draw for really really long periods of time in a stressed-out manner." "Sometimes it's better to just not meet that deadline if it means your mental or physical health." "Drawing is just like everything I do -- I didn't even realize how important it was to me until I had to stop doing it." "I really felt like I had nothing to say artistically, because I just didn't fit what the teachers wanted.  I felt like my ideas were useless." "If you have attainable goals then you can really start enjoying what you do.  Just enjoying the feeling of being in a creative flow." "If you say 'I'm going to sketch for an hour,' that's attainable.  You're not saying what you're going to sketch.  You're not saying how good your sketches have to be.  You're just saying that it's going to be for an hour." "When you're just practicing, you don't know where it's going to lead and you shouldn't think too much about where it's going to lead.  You should just be in the moment." "My work has become a way for me to express myself and I feel so lucky to be able to do that as my job." "There was a certain level of self-acceptance needed for me to understand what was right for me." "Everybody's got their own way.  And I think if you search for your own way and you eventually find it, you get so much fulfillment out of it." Alphonse Mucha was "the" Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist of his time. He was known best for his distinct style. He produced many paintings, illustrations, advertisements, postcards, and designs. His Slav Epic paintings were used as a pan slavic unifying movement and an illustrated history for the Czech and Moravian peoples. The Czechs call him "theirs" and his art is a testament to forward thinking with an historic relevance to the time in which he lived.A show by podcastnik.com — visit the site for all projects and news.
