In today's episode of the Second in Command podcast, Cameron discusses the unconventional journey from COO to CEO, emphasizing that a mere fraction, possibly 5% of COOs, possess the entrepreneurial spirit necessary for transitioning into CEO roles. Highlighting his own path as a serial entrepreneur from a young age, Cameron outlines the unique experiences that shaped his capabilities to scale businesses effectively. His tenure at various entrepreneurial ventures, including a significant role at College Pro Painters and as COO at 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, demonstrates the critical interplay between entrepreneurial instinct and the disciplined application of systems and processes for business growth. This backdrop sets the stage for understanding the nuanced leadership dynamics in fast-growing companies. The conversation explores the specific challenges and mental shifts required for COOs aspiring to CEO positions. Cameron draws an analogy to blue and pink jobs to illustrate the necessity for COOs to delegate traditional operational tasks and adopt roles that may initially seem unfamiliar or trivial. This transition, according to Cameron, is crucial for scaling operations and necessitates a focus on vision, culture, and strategic leadership rather than the minutiae of day-to-day operations. The conversation touches on the importance of CEOs asking the right leadership questions that drive system improvements and strategic oversight, rather than getting bogged down in operational details. This shift in perspective is essential for nurturing a conducive environment for business growth and innovation.Cameron also imparts a resonant message about the essence of leadership and the fundamental goal of any business venture. He asserts that beyond the operational excellence and strategic foresight, genuine care for the well-being of employees is paramount. By prioritizing the human element and showing authentic concern for employees' lives beyond their work roles, leaders can inspire unwavering loyalty and commitment. This, Cameron believes, is the ultimate key to building successful and resilient organizations. The episode closes with a reminder of the transience of business achievements compared to the lasting impact leaders can have on the lives of those they work with.Enjoy! In This Episode You'll Learn:The rarity of COOs transitioning into CEO roles, noting that only a small percentage have the entrepreneurial DNA to do so. (0:59)Cameron's journey of entrepreneurship from a young age and how this shaped his success in various leadership roles, emphasizing the value of entrepreneurial thinking and systems in scaling businesses. (3:42)The necessity for leaders, especially those transitioning from COO to CEO, to delegate traditional tasks and focus on roles that drive company culture and vision. (5:29)The importance of CEOs asking the right leadership questions to ensure systemic efficiency and prevent operational pitfalls. So now that you’ve solved that problem, the question becomes, “How do we prioritize and convert our best applicants into interviews?” This applicant flow management and interview set up call stage is an unbelievably important step and one that entrepreneurs often don’t take seriously enough. Not Taking it seriously leads to you wasting your time on the wrong candidates, or worse - being no-showed by your interviewee. To walk us through this we’re lucky to have Danny Kerr, managing director at Breakthrough Academy. Before starting Breakthrough Academy, Danny was the head recruiter for all of Western Canada for College Pro Painters. He’s the best person we know at this critical flow management and interview set up stage. In this episode we cover: The most efficient way to categorise, process and schedule applicants How to treat referral candidates vs outside applicants The best way to get people to open up on the phone so you get a better sense of who you’re really talking to The questions to ask to draw out their true motivations When to bring up ‘Deal Breaker’ questions The best way to close out the call and transition to the next phase of the process See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

https://www.biggerpockets.com/show447 What do you want out of life? What do you want to accomplish in the next 3-5 years? When asked this question, most entrepreneurs give a pretty simplistic answer. Something like “Oh, we’ll get more clients by this time next year” or “I’ll buy two more houses and then I’ll be happy”. How often do we sit down and paint a picture of what we want our life to look like? Today we’re discussing Vivid Visions with their creator Cameron Herold. Cameron is a veteran in the business world, he likes to say that he was “groomed” by his entrepreneurial grandparents and father to become a success story. By the time Cameron was 21, he had a full-on business that had 12 employees, and at 22 he bought his first rental property. He later became a franchisee for College Pro Painters and was so successful that he went on to coach new franchisees. He’s partnered with hundred-million dollar companies, grown and sold businesses for millions, coached the CEO of Sprint, a monarchy in the middle east, has written 5 books, and runs the Second in Command Podcast, where he talks to successful COOs. Cameron is someone who clearly has accomplished a lot and has a TON of wisdom to share. Cameron has serious knowledge on business management and talks about the importance of the CEO and COO relationship. Cameron describes how a COO needs to be a partner to the entrepreneur (the CEO) and operate as the ying to the CEO’s yang. If you’ve heard the terms “the visionary and the innovator” from books like Traction, this is exactly what Cameron is talking about. If you’ve been wondering where the idea of a “plan” or “vision” comes into play, Brandon, David, and Cameron all discuss their “Vivid Visions” and how it’s led them to success in their life. Cameron coined the term “Vivid Vision” because most entrepreneurs were simply writing down a 1-2 sentence mission statement instead of creating a vision of what they wanted their company and future to look like. This vision not only helps you build a life you want by design, it also entices great executives, employees, and partners to join you on your path to that clear and decisive “Vivid Vision”. Cameron Herold is host of the Second in Command podcast and bestselling author of The Miracle Morning for Entrepreneurs: Elevate Your SELF to Elevate Your BUSINESS, Meetings Suck: Turning One of the Most Loathed Elements of Business into One of the Most Valuable, and the new books Free PR: How to Get Chased By The Press Without Hiring a PR Firm and Double Double: How to Double Your Revenue and Profit in 3 Years or Less (in its seventh printing). Herold is the founder of COO Alliance, which helps COO’s become better leaders. He is the mastermind behind hundreds of companies' exponential growth and has built a dynamic consultancy, including his time as COO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. His current clients include a 'Big 4' wireless carrier and a monarchy. Podcast Highlights Who is Cameron Herold? Cameron’s first entrepreneurial memory was when he was seven years old. He was cold calling dry cleaners about how much they would pay for coat hangers. His parents raised Cameron and his siblings as entrepreneurs right from the beginning so there wasn’t really a time before then when he wasn’t doing his own thing. Why Second in Command? Cameron started off his entrepreneurial career with College Pro Painters within a franchise which super charged his growth as an entrepreneur. He went on to work in three other companies where he was second in command and helped those companies grow. All that prepared him to take 1-800-GOT-JUNK from 14 employees to 3100 employees and that’s where he found the match between the CEO and the COO. A lot of the time the entrepreneurs that start a business have all the vision in the world but don’t have the skills they need to grow their business, so it makes sense to bring someone in who has those skills. The CEO in the early days of a business is the Chief Everything Officer, but that eventually evolves into the Chief Energizing Officer once the business gets going. When they transition in the later stage they can deliver on the why of the business but not necessarily the how, which is when the COO comes in. When should a CEO bring on the COO? You need to completely trust the person as your COO on day one. If you don’t have the trust level built up, you need to keep interviewing and doing reference checks until you can trust them with the keys to your house and password to your bank account. Try not to get wrapped up in the title, the COO could also be the VP of Operations or General Manager. You can find multiple people to shore up your weaknesses, the point is to find someone with skill sets that you don’t have. The entrepreneur needs to know what has to happen and the COO needs to know how it has to happen. They are the executors of the business and need to be given free reign to accomplish the entrepreneurs vision. Playing out of position The CEO and the COO work in tandem. Whatever the

Chris Igou is the Vice President of US Operations at Handyman Connection. Chris first got his start in the franchising industry when he was 18 and started working for College Pro Painters. It was here he found himself presented with an opportunity to become a franchise owner. He later went away from the franchising industry only to find that he missed it which led him to join Handyman Connection in 2013. Key Takeaways: [0:18] Today’s episode is brought to you by Franchise 5! The key to long-term success is through smart, strategic growth. To learn more about this program, head over to FranchiseEuphoria.com/Franchise5. [1:01] Our episode today features Chris Igou, the Vice President of US Operations and Handyman Connection, a home repair company. [2:09] Josh welcomes Chris to the show. [2:58] Chris got his start in franchising when he was 18 years old when he worked for a company called College Pro Painters and encountered the opportunity to be a franchise owner. [3:58] Handyman Connection is a home repair company that focuses on home maintenance repairs. They pride themselves on being a “once call, one connection” business that can handle repairs for a variety of different trades. [6:45] Handyman Connection spans coast to coast and has over 60 franchised locations. [7:30] There wasn’t a lot of competition at the time Handyman Connection got started. However, when the internet became more prominent, competitors were more easily accessed and began to pose a problem. [9:00] One of their biggest challenges today is finding quality franchisees who are ready to be their own boss and ready to leave their stable day jobs. [9:55] To secure their quality franchisee candidates, they make sure they provide them with quality information that is neither vague nor overwhelming. Then they’ll host a standard discovery day. The key is to making sure it is a favorable partnership for everybody. [10:57] On the franchise side, they utilize social media and are partnered with various coaches and brokers that will spread their name to franchisee candidates. [12:20] Handyman Connection has a franchise development team that vets all interested parties to make sure the basic needs are present and to be sure that they move forward with serious inquiries only. [14:00] Once a franchisee has signed on, they are then turned over to their various teams: Operations, Launch, Development, and Growth. These teams represent the different stages in a franchised location’s first year of life and the franchisees move linearly through the various teams in their first year of being open. [15:30] Handyman Connection went through an internal remodel when Chris joined them in 2013. Initially he took on all the roles mentioned above, but with the business demand, he decided to implement this coaching system for their franchisees so that they could move in the right direction and execute the brand properly. [17:23] Their corporate team is structured around a coaching mentality over the typical audit mentality that comes with corporate franchising teams. [23:05] The ideal franchisee for HC is not necessarily a “handyman” themselves. They’re looking for good business owners who is good at building their location’s team and finding the right people for specific customer needs. Cameron’s two most successful books ‘Double Double’ and ‘Meetings Suck’ cut through the nonsense of complicated business-speak, making the steps to uber-success super relatable and simple. He is well known for his Ted X Talk on ‘Raising Kids As Entrepreneurs’. Cameron got his first formal training and gained insight into how to grow and scale a business as well as how to coach business owners with a company called College Pro Painters. At 25 years old, he was one of the top sixty people in the company globally. Cameron then became a partner in a chain of collision repair shops and scaled that business until it went public -- it is now the largest collision auto repair chain in the world. He did the same as the president of a private currency company (similar to the Bitcoin of today). Cameron moved on to become the COO of The Rubbish Boys, which he rapidly expanded to the very well-known 1-800-GOT-JUNK, the world’s largest junk removal service. Since then (10 years ago) he has been coaching real businesses all over the world to major success, and is ever-developing his company, the COO Alliance. In this episode, Cameron gives us insight on the key factors for successfully hiring right to scale a business. Emphasis on starting each day as an entrepreneur with the proper mindset and leveraging your vision, subjects that are heavily covered in his book ‘Miracle Morning.’ Top 10 -TedX Speaker -College Pro Franchise -Systems -Entreprenuer cheat sheet -True effectiveness -Hiring A's to MIH -Power of culture -Franchisable models -Creating a life and the 5 f's -And much more! https://cooalliance.com https://www.cameronherold.com https://jakeandgino.com Check out the podcast for iTunes: iTunes Store - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/jake-gino/id1025080737?mt=2 Check out the podcast for Android: RSS FEED - http://jakeandgino.libsyn.com/rss Thanks so much for joining us again. Cameron Herold wasn’t the smartest kid in school. In fact, if he would have allowed his C-average in school determine his fate, he would not have achieved the level of success he has so far. From his earliest days, Cameron was destined to become an entrepreneur. He built and led several businesses — many you may have heard of, including College Pro Painters and 1-800-Got-Junk. He admittedly suffers from ADHD and believes this form of neurodiversity has allowed him to see the whole picture when confronted with everyday business challenges. He’s the author of three high-impact business books, “Double Double,” “Meetings Suck,” and the “Miracle Morning for Entrepreneurs.” Cameron has been called the "best speaker" by Forbes magazine publisher Rich Karlgaard. He’s also spoken in 28 countries around the world. This episode also happens to the first episode I’ve recorded live in our studio in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was an absolute blast. I decided to take the in-person opportunity and swerve into some lesser-publicly known interest areas about Cameron, including his Burning Man experiences, his fascination with art, and our shared love of music. This is a great conversation with the man known as the CEO Whisperer. Enjoy this one-of-a-kind episode with Cameron Herold.
