Yes, you write. But when it comes to marketing, you can do a lot more than that. Today, clients are looking for help from specialists like copywriters who bring more to the table. In this episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, I spoke with Emily Reagan about how writers can offer additional services and expertise to their clients. Emily helps virtual assistants step up into a more helpful role as Marketing Assistants, and it's something we think more copywriters need to consider. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff we mentioned: Atomic Habits Emily's Podcast Emily's Instagram The Authority Framework The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: You're a copywriter, but you can do other marketing stuff like design or email systems. Is there a need for that? This is The Copywriter Club Podcast. As a copywriter, you probably have a hand in all kinds of marketing activities—everything from the overall marketing strategy to brainstorming lead magnets, to creating and posting content, or writing and managing ads, to figuring out which email systems will help increase engagement and purchases… you probably already do a lot of this stuff. What's more, a lot of clients want smaller, more nimble teams these days, and that means working with people who can do more of the tasks they used to depend on an entire team to get done. Some people taking on these expanded roles call themselves marketing assistants. Whether that title works for you or not isn't important. What really matters is that there is a growing need for writers of all kinds to take on this larger, more inclusive role and contribute more, often using A.I. to bring it all together. My guest for this episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast is Emily Reagan. Emily started out offering marketing support especially related to Facebook ads, but she expanded beyond that to include copywriting and other marketing services. And she's spent the past couple of years helping others do the same thing. We talked about the importance of adding additional marketing services to your copywriting business to make yourself more valuable—maybe even indispensable—for your clients. It's yet another way to stand out from all the other writers out there who don't offer clients anything extra. While we talked, Emily also shared a lot of details about her business—she works with clients and helps other writers grow their marketing skills. As she tells it, her business grew serendipitously… going from one thing to the next as it made sense. It's not exactly a path that others can follow, but it is a strategy for finding your own path to the work you love doing. I think you're going to like this discussion. As usual, this episode is brought to you by The Copywriter Underground. You've heard me talk about how we've recently rebuilt The Underground dashboard to make it easier to find the ideas and insights you need. But as I started recreating this new dashboard, it occurred to me that no one has time to watch more than 70 different workshops—even for those workshops that help you gain the skills and strategies you need to build your business. So I've taken more than 30 of those workshops on finding clients, having sales calls, using A.I., building authority on LinkedIn, and dozens of others… and I've created playbooks that break down the ideas in the workshops into easy-to-follow steps. Each playbook is 3-5 pages long. You can read through one and implement the ideas in minutes. And then if you want more detail, you can watch the accompanying workshop. Each playbook even includes a checklist so you don't miss any steps and can make sure you get things done. I'm working on completing playbooks for all of the workshops and training inside The Underground. They should all be ready by the end of April. You can get the first 30 or so right now by visiting thecopywriterclub.com/tcu.

Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box
As subscription box business owners, we wear all the hats—marketing, customer service, tech, fulfillment—you name it, we do it. But trying to do everything can hold you back from growing your business. That's where hiring help–a Virtual Assistant (VA) or a Digital Marketing Assistant–comes in. If you've been thinking about hiring help but aren't sure where to start, this episode is for you! I sat down with Emily Reagan, who specializes in training smart women to provide digital marketing services to online business owners. Inside her Digital Marketing Assistant School, Emily teaches the core marketing skills businesses need, from SEO and blogging to email marketing and funnels and so much more. She also runs the Digital Marketers Workgroup, where experienced freelancers continue honing their skills. Emily brings online business owners' needs to her experienced freelance digital marketing assistants, often resulting in a match made in online business marketing heaven! I turned to Emily to hire my first VA who is still on my team many years later and has grown far beyond her original VA title and role. What is a Digital Marketing Assistant? You've probably heard the term Virtual Assistant (VA) before—it's a general term for anyone working remotely to help a business. A Digital Marketing Assistant is a specialized VA who focuses specifically on marketing tasks that drive growth for online businesses. A Digital Marketing Assistant can help with: Email marketing Social media management Blogging & SEO Funnels & automation Affiliate marketing Tech setup In short, they help you get more done in less time—so you can focus on growing your subscription box. If you're thinking: I'm not ready to hire someone yet, the truth is that by the time you feel ready, it's already too late. You don't have to hire a full-time employee. Start small! My first VA worked just 10 hours a week, and she got SO much done in that time. These team members often work faster and take things off your plate—especially those tasks you keep putting off. (I'm looking at you, tech stuff!) Instead of feeling overwhelmed and unproductive, focus on the things you love to do and those things that will move your business forward. And delegate the rest. Where do you even find a digital marketing assistant for your subscription box business? Emily makes it easy—just head to hireaunicorn.com and post a job. Up to 10 digital marketing assistants will reach out, and you can get on Zoom or Google Meets and have a conversation with the ones who seem to be the best fit. Sarah's tip: Personality matters. You want someone who's not only skilled but also a great fit for you and your business. Setting Your Digital Team Member Up for Success Hiring a digital marketing assistant is just the first step—making it work is just as important. Give both of you the best chance of success by: : Being clear about expectations Providing feedback Vetting before hiring Onboarding properly Emily said it best: “No one successful does it alone.” And something I say inside Launch Your Box and Scale Your Box: Hire before you feel ready. Because if you wait until you finally feel ready, you'll already be drowning in tasks that could have been delegated months ago. There are a lot of titles in the industry, and we understand that it can feel overwhelming to know which title and role you need to fill for your business. In today's episode, Emily Reagan explains how she landed on 'Marketing Assistant' as her title as she initially struggled to define how she assisted Visionaries. We compare the difference between Marketing Rainmakers and Unicorn Assistants and explore the point in your business where you would consider bringing on a Rainmaker to support the Assistant and relieve them of the duties that the Rainmaker should be fulfilling.Emily shares a typical day for a digital marketing assistant on behalf of an organization. I clarify what a Rainmaker does to help you understand the differences between these two team members. Then, we outline a Frankenstein role and how to avoid creating a role like this in your business by setting your team members up for success and getting the most out of them.If you need help determining what level of support you need in your business, listen to this interview as we help you identify which team member you need so that you can understand who you might need to hire to help support your marketing growth.Learn more about my guest:Emily Reagan is a jill-of-all-trades when it comes to digital marketing and techie skills. Being a part of a University is such an interesting world. You're essentially part of building and running a small city. Sometimes it can be hard to know what direction to take things. Do you treat it like a typical direct to consumer business? Do you treat it like B2B? And how do you really know who the target customer is? These are all things we are going to explore with today's guest, Emily Reagan the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at the University of Texas.Emily joined UT right at the beginning of the pandemic and during one of the worst winter storms Texas has ever seen. But despite those challenges, she knew that the best way to start her tenure at UT was by focusing on the foundation to all great marketing - relationships. “Relationships are really, really important. And, um, and marketing, the role of marketing in organizations is, is, is typically not the one calling the shots on the strategies or what we're doing or what we're not doing. Um, but they are critical in, in, you know, in smart companies, they're obviously at the table at part of those conversations, but they're, they're not necessarily the lead. They're often a partner, they're an influencer. And particularly in a B2B organization, they're very much a, an influencer and a partner to the sales team. And, um, and I really enjoyed that. And I enjoyed, um, the, the relationship building with the sales team and kind of understanding their world a little bit better. I had been doing a lot of work consumer marketing prior to that.So I hadn't really worked with a, you know, a software sales team. Mm. And so that was kind of a new experience. Yeah. Yeah. And, um, but I think, and the thing there is, is, is, you know, do what you said you were gonna do and, and build relationships. And because those are, you know, that's who you're really to help kind of make their job easier. And so I think that's just a really important thing regardless of what function that you're in sure is to understand who your, your internal customer is. Mm-hmm , and, and really being clear about what, how you can work together and how you can build trust and build relationship.”She shares so much insight on this episode. Not just about the university, but also her experience working with other industries prior to joining UT.You guys are going to get so much from this episode. The term ‘virtual assistant' wasn't a thing yet if you look back even just several years ago. But in today's digital age, it's considered one of the most in-demand online jobs there is. Emily Reagan is one of the first few virtual assistants (VA) who started a decade ago, long before she was able to refer to herself as one. Being a VA is something she saw herself doing for a long time since she's a military spouse moving from one city to another. A few years after her first stint as a VA, she now teaches digital marketing and helps women venture into being a virtual assistant career path.In this episode, we talked about how to apply and land a job as a VA, what skills and tools are needed to get that VA position, and the advantages of working in a digital space.Show Highlights:[9:51] Business owners are scared to hire, they want someone they can trust so they can keep it in-house.[40:24] You can be almost any kind of VA, like anything you used to do, especially in an office or for work, translated online. You just need your eyes open to that and you need to update with the lingo, and the software, and the platforms. [40:52] You can't go in with a negative attitude or a closed mindset. You have to be willing to take on that challenge and learn.Guest Links:Know more about Emily Reagan, her Digital Media VA Crash Course, and more resources through her website here.

Being a business owner often means wearing different hats in your business. One day you're a marketer, the next day you're an accountant, and the next day you're doing administrative work. But there comes a time in every business owner's life where it doesn't make sense to continue down the path of doing everything. In fact, doing everything is often what keeps you from growing your business effectively. So, you decide you're going to hire someone - usually you start with a virtual assistant. But you automatically start thinking about cost - and you have NO idea how to really onboard someone or what to give them. Today on the Mindset First Podcast I sit down with Emily Reagan - who describes herself as a jill-of-all trades when it comes to digital marketing and techie skills. She's worked as a behind-the-scenes digital media implementer and virtual assistant for a decade for online biz owner clients. She's a mom of four, Air Force wife, and founder of the Digital Media VA Crash Course, where she teaches women the digital marketing skills to get hired online as a unicorn virtual assistant. She shares all the details you need to know how to hire your unicorn to help you grow.
Emily Reagan is a mom of four, Air Force wife, digital marketing consultant and founder of vacrashcourse.com. As a scrappy military wife who moves every two years, Emily has worked in various jobs related to public relations, marketing, sports media relations, journalism and video production. Finally her random skill set paid off as a freelancer digital media “VA” (virtual assistant). Now she helps creative entrepreneurs take their talents online, grow their social media presence and build their sales funnels. She quickly booked out and didn't like turning down clients, so she trained her smart military spouse and mom friends to learn digital media tech skills and take on clients as their own. She calls her Digital Media VA Crash Course graduates “unicorn VAs” because they have all the resourceful qualities, online insight and implementation skills that online business owners are looking to hire first... aka that total magical package. Here's what we covered on the episode: Emily's Background () How emily and I met over a year ago, before the pandemic at dinner through Sage Polaris at the TCC IRL event The story of how Emily had her dream job, found out she was pregnant, moved again, became a stay at home mom, had a couple more kids, and moved a couple more times A friend of Emily's saw that a blogger needed help with a media kit and asked Emily if she would be interested; Emily said yes and explains that she googled what a media kit was because at that time social media was changing so much and she had been out of the workforce for a 4-5 years Emily explains how doing this blogger's media kit opened one door after another and introduced her to Google Analytics What's a Unicorn VA? Why Emily doesn't like the term VA because to her, she was never just a virtual assistant, she had so many responsibilities and did so many tasks that had a direct impact on her clients and their business What Emily teaches virtual assistants in her course is, get in, get your feet wet, learn the skills, figure out very quickly what you like, what you're good at, what you don't like and immediately start promoting yourself Promote yourself as a VA by taking on projects because so many businesses will hire in-house or hire overseas When Emily talks about unicorn VAs, she's talking about that first person you hire when you need help with everything, someone who can help with the administrative tasks, but can also help with the tasks that bog you down weekly When deciding what you should or shouldn't take on as a VA, Emily says know what your zone of genius is and start handing off the things you aren't good at Emily shares that when you have a skill that's marketable, you just need to learn the online way of doing that business and shares a real example of someone in her course When Emily first started, she kept her head down, said yes to the projects, had no vision but ended up booking out so quickly that she realized she needed to teach her other mom friends what she was doing because there was such a high demand for implementers How training 8 women to take on and subcontract client work validated for Emily that she could teach people and realized she needed to scale it How Emily's Business has Changed The story of how Emily helped a client with a million dollar launch, where she stayed up until 1am rebuilding the client's tech library and realized she didn't want to be doing that anymore Emily started to scale her course and put herself out there How quiz funnels were a great way for Emily to keep her hand in the pot, but get out of hourly rates When Emily pitched her first press kit, she charged $300 and shares she had some experience but didn't really know how to design, so ended up hiring it out Emily started doing Pinterest for $10/hr and says she loved it because it was stress free Now, Emily charges $100/hr and her day rates are $1,000 a day Don't Wait Until It's Too Late If you are in need of a VA, you can go to hire a unicorn.com and fill out a form that they'll post in their student Facebook group Emily's advice is to not wait until it's too late to hire someone to help you; she also says don't get stuck on 1 tech skill you need because someone will be able to learn it Even if a job listing has job requirements you don't meet, like needing 5 year of experience, Emily says put your name in the hat anyways Why Emily tells all her students who are new to talk to their friends because they probably know a business owner who you can get work from Emily tells us about the 4 women on her team and explains each of their roles, and shares that she does her own social media Connect with Emily on Instagram or listen to her Podcast, Unicorns Unite or fill out a form at hire a unicorn.com if you are in need of a VA Links mentioned: Emily's VA Crash Course Hire a Unicorn Connect with Emily on Instagram Listen to Emily's Podcast - Unicorns Unite Like what you heard? We're subscription box entrepreneurs, which means we're motivated by success and ready to take on new challenges as they arise. But we don't need to take on these challenges alone! Behind the scenes we can have a support system to help us stay on track and even expand without getting overwhelmed. This week we're talking about how Virtual Assistants can help take on some of those tasks and next level your business. Virtual Assistants Virtual Assistants are independent contractors who work flex schedules and have a negotiated set of hours they would commit to working on tasks that you would need from them. Being independent contractors means that while you are hiring them to help you with your business, you're only taking them on for a set number of hours or specific tasks rather than hiring a full-time employee which can be more flexible to your budget and specialized for what your business needs are. 3 Task Buckets: Admin, Creative, and Tech VA's are best used when you have certain tasks in mind for them, and some VAs specialize in certain tasks over others. I like to break what a VA can do for you into three task buckets: admin, creative, and tech. With Admin, you can find VAs to help you with customer service work such as answering service emails, especially cancellations like we spoke about in a previous podcast. They can also help with billing issues and bookkeeping, or really any of the nuts and bolts of running a successful business. On the Creative side, this can entail the designing of those customer facing marketing materials. Graphic design VAs can help build graphics for social media, custom emails, newsletters, worksheets, or e-books and make them look good to reflect how you feel about your business to your customers. They can help you brainstorm to figure out those ideas that you might have a blind spot to and having a professional for the creative side of business can go a long way. Tech focus tasks are a huge help getting you up to date on the latest and greatest tools available to entrepreneurs. Maintaining the back end of your website, integrating waitlists to email lists, optimizing website-plugins and making sure they're working properly... these can be hair pulling to learn if you're not tech savvy, so why not get help with it? Where to find a VA Finding the right VA for your needs takes a little bit of footwork but pays off huge. Finding Facebook groups for what tasks you might need are a good place to start as VAs are in those groups soliciting for work. As with hiring anyone, make sure you interview with the person to see if your values match up and be ready to take that leap if things work out. You can also try to find a VA through Emily Reagan's portal on her website, which we spoke about on the episode. Good Luck! Hey Mamas, another week, another day, but hello May! Our Covid Compassion Project series is still going strong and today we have a juicy, and much, much needed episode to help you with all things business and learning to adapt and pivot during these interesting times. We always hear the saying in business and life, "prepare for impact," but how often do we actually do so? Today's episode features Emily Reagan who is a mom of four, an air force wife, a digital marketing consultant and founder of vacrashcourse.com (http://vacrashcourse.com/). She has a background in journalism and electronic media. As a scrappy military wife who has moved every two years, Emily has worked in various jobs related to public relations, marketing, sports media relations, journalism, and video production. Finally her random skillset has come together as a freelancer “VA” (virtual assistant), where she helps creative entrepreneurs take their talents online, grow their social media presence and build their sales funnels. In today's episode, Sabrina and Emily talk about all things business, how to adapt, and of course how to prepare for impact. For many of us who are in business or who are considering starting an online business during a time of crisis, today's episode will shake you up and give you the encouragement and boost you need to jump feet first, all-in. So... without further adieu, here are our top takeaways from today's episode which we know will be highly valuable for all those tuning in or reading in: 1. Physical distancing, not social distancing. Why? Because now more than ever, we need community, we need connection. So yes, we are physically distant during this time, but socially more present than ever. Plug into online communities, podcasts. Have a porchside conversation with a friend. Better yet, mastermind with your biz besties and get the wheels in your biz turning, which brings us to our main point... 2. Adapt and pivot. Don't shut down. We repeat, do not freeze. Mamas, we know firsthand how it feels to have all this doubt and uncertainty swirling around when faced with crisis, but isn't that why we exist? Navigating a crisis is literally a mom superpower; we do this with our littles every single day. We do the damn juggle all day, everyday. Right now isn't so different. Use that fuel to launch your business, to make that side hustle your full time gig. To not go back to corporate. To forge your own path. For those of you in businesses that are a bit more brick and mortar, have a sit down meeting with yourself (and your team if you have one), and ask yourselves how you can pivot. What can you offer en masse at an accessible price that still brings home the income sustainably? Can you do online classes, courses, consultations, porch side deliveries? The world is literally your canvas right now. This is the much needed pivot many of us needed, the reset we were longing for (even if the circumstances are not ideal), the time we craved to work on our businesses and side hustles, the opportunity to create the life we desire, the type of "normal" we have the power to curate and create once things open up and everything is functional again. One thing is for certain, things will never go back to "normal,
