On the show, Alex and Calvin are joined by guest co-host Dr. Sarah Hae-In Idzik to talk with Corinne about her multifaceted analyses of the role of Asian American racialization in the construction of the concept of the human. We delve into Corinne's concept of "racial allegory," which illuminates how media and institutional narratives mobilize categories of difference, including Asian Americans, to stabilize the idea of "Western man".Our discussion touches upon the significance of the title Making the Human, unpacking how Asian American racialization and gendering contribute to the social formulation of the human. We explore key concepts such as the understanding of "Western man" drawn from Black Studies scholarship, while also examining the crucial relationship that Corinne charts between anti-Asian racism and anti-Blackness within communication and rhetoric studies. Corinne also explains how she applies the notion of racial allegory to a case study on Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, revealing how anti-racist discourse can be used to uphold racial hierarchies, and the strategic role of the victimized Asian student trope in this context. Furthermore, we analyze Corinne's intercontextual reading of the film Crazy Rich Asians alongside Daniel Patrick Moynihan's “The Negro Family” report, exploring allegories of family and mothering and the underlying racial narratives at play. Our discussion also considers the significance of animacy and the inhuman in relation to the boundaries of the human, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the racialization of Asian Americans as potential disease carriers. Welcome to Season 5, Episode 13! Have you heard of Walter Tin Kit Achiu? He was the first Native Hawaiian and first Asian American to play in the National Football League. Although his career was groundbreaking, he's largely been forgotten over time.  In this episode, we talk about his life, his football career, and what he did after he finished playing with the NFL's Dayton Triangles (yes… that was really the name of the American football team he was part of). Nicknamed “Sneeze”, he was a high level athlete all his life and broke barriers on the football field and in the wrestling ring.  We begin the episode by talking about some current events (the sad passing of K.W. Lee and the happy green-lighting of the Crazy Rich Asians show on Max). And we end the episode with the recurring segment of What are We Listening To? A phenomenal story, direction, great character development, performances, and a bangin' soundtrack to boot, all make Love & Basketball a wonderful movie to enjoy with even the deepest romantic skeptic in your life. Swish, swish, bish. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)Take a trip to Singapore with Rachel and Nick this week with 2018's Crazy Rich Asians, based on the book of the same name. Rachel Chu finds out her sweet and unpretentious boyfriend, Nick Young, is actually the son and heir to one of the wealthiest and most influential families in Singapore when he takes her back home for his best friend's wedding. Learning to navigate high society is difficult enough, let alone in a new country with Nick's overbearing family. Watching Rachel and Nick learn to navigate difficult family dynamics and fight for each other will warm even the coldest heart. This is a rom-com that everyone will enjoy. Hitch (2005)Our last film for the week is Hitch from 2005, starring Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James, and Amber Valletta. This is a film about learning to let down your walls just long enough for the right person to get through, even if you might get hurt. Filled with great one-liners, loads of laughs, and a soundtrack that will keep you dancing, Hitch is a solid choice for movie night. In this episode, I talked to Corinne Sugino, whose book Making the Human: Race, Allegory, and Asian Americans (Rutgers UP, 2024) examines how mainstream stories about Asian American success have come to serve harmful ideas about progress. At the turn of the century, Asian Americans have come to embody meritocracy and heteronormative family values, and more recently, some Asian Americans have become the face of law and order. These ideas become solidified in a variety of narratives, from blockbuster movies such as Crazy Rich Asians, to (supposedly) myth-busting documentaries such as Seeking Asian Female, to legal arguments against Affirmative Action. But these stories—usually stories about American citizens of East Asian descent—erase the diverse lived experience of Asian America. In this conversation, Corine Sugino also explains how we can draw on Black Studies, including scholarship by Sylvia Wynter and Katherine McKittrick, to develop a more capacious understanding of “the human” and antiracism. This provides a foundation for imagining solidarity across racial lines. About Corinne Sugino: Corinne Sugino is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Center for Ethnic Studies. Their research focus lies at the intersections of Asian American studies, cultural studies, rhetorical theory, and media studies. Corinne's first book project, Making the Human: Race, Allegory, and Asian Americans (Rutgers University Press, November 2024) explores how cultural and media narratives about Asian American racial and gendered difference naturalizes a limited understanding of what it means to be human. Beyond this project, her research interests also include discourses of false inclusion, Asian American grassroots media during the Asian American movement, and transnational racialization in Japan. If you're unfamiliar with the plot of Broadway stunner, Wicked, fear not, director Jon M. Chu's (Crazy Rich Asians) big screen adaptation is a splashy note-for-note faithful interpretation of the acclaimed musical. If your gateway is Gregory Macguire's book by the same name, expect more committment to the musical's book than his source material. Wicked, a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, tells the story of the classic's central villian Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West and it's symbol of goodness, Glinda the Good Witch of the South. It's story opens with a Glinda arriving in Munchkinland in a glimmering bubble. To confirms for the citzenry that the witch is dead. It's a majestic start complete with a spectacular ensemble number.  Under Chu's stewardship OZ comes to sparkling life. There are recognizable set pieces as well as a more expansive look at the land of OZ.  The film adaptation retains the "PG" light touch by inferring much more than showing the darkness decending upon the land. Cynthia Erivio and Arian Grande-Butera are hands down a triumph as the film's Elphaba and Glinda. Both their vocals and dramatic interpretation of the leads distinguish their performances from any that've come before. In this meticulously built world the duo lead their talent-packed ensemble to create one of the best film-adaptation of a stage production ever. Wicked offers plenty for those longing for bright and colorful escapism. You'll laugh, gasp, and be amazed at each cinematic success (enough to forgive its varied visual effects shortfalls).  The narrative leans heavily on its cast for its emotional peaks and valleys and they more ably respond. Christopher Scott's propulsive choreography delivers again and again. Erivo's blend of stoicism and defensive boldness aid a growing necessary edge. While Grande's pitch perfect switches between self-absorbsion, ambitious, perky benevolence adds the bounce and flair. Each balancing out the other in a delightful chemistry. But Holzman and Fox' decision to add only hints of the novel's deeper themes expose a script that fails to fully serve the narrative underpining all the visual pizzazz. Every shallow plot point and thin (secondary) character development between musical numbers turns into glaring oversight in the spotlight of Wicked's exhaustive runtime. So. if you were hoping that the extended (2 hours 40 minute) runtime - and cutting the story into two films - meant more (extremely important) parts of Macguire's Wicked would find its way into the screenplay, well then you'll likely come away disappointed. Perhaps the second half of this story coming November of 2025 will fill in those gaps. But despite this missed opportunity hindering Wicked from truly defiying gravity, its technical prowess behind and in front of the camera are worth a watch. Chu's sprawling production brings this origin story to life such verve and vibrancy your inner song-and-dance loving kid will not leave dissatisfied. If you're unfamiliar with the plot of Broadway stunner, Wicked, fear not, director Jon M. Chu's (Crazy Rich Asians) big screen adaptation is a splashy note-for-note faithful interpretation of the acclaimed musical. If your gateway is Gregory Macguire's book by the same name, expect more committment to the musical's book than his source material. Wicked, a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, tells the story of the classic's central villian Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West and it's symbol of goodness, Glinda the Good Witch of the South. It's story opens with a Glinda arriving in Munchkinland in a glimmering bubble. To confirms for the citzenry that the witch is dead. It's a majestic start complete with a spectacular ensemble number.  Under Chu's stewardship OZ comes to sparkling life. There are recognizable set pieces as well as a more expansive look at the land of OZ.  The film adaptation retains the "PG" light touch by inferring much more than showing the darkness decending upon the land. Wicked – the 20-year-old – smash hit on Broadway turns the story of the "Wizard of Oz" on its head. Now, the story of Elfaba the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda the Good Witch, and the Wizard himself is making the shift from stage to screen.
