On episode 230, we welcome Michelle Sherman to discuss mental illness within families, the missteps people make in attempting to address it, our tendency to personalize others' struggles, what happens when others aren't aware of why they're struggling and can't explain it, the 4Cs model of navigating mental illness in others, the effects and trauma and neglect, asking for support and overcoming the shame of doing so, and why having a mental illness doesn't necessarily mean one is incapable of being a good parent. Michelle D. Sherman, PhD, ABPP, is a board-certified, licensed clinical psychologist who is a nationally recognized leader in the family experience of mental illness and trauma. She is the editor-in-chief of Couple and Family Psychology: Research and Practice and worked for many years in the Veterans Affairs system. Timeless Teachings - Spirituality and Mysticism in Daily Life
Have you ever had a conversation with God? A real one, when God is actually communicating with you too? Our guest today John Roedel is an improv comedic, who has been called “The Unafraid Storyteller”, has "stumbled" into writing a few years ago as his life began to fall apart all around him. During his dark night of the soul, John began to have fake conversations with "God" on Facebook to poke fun at his spiritual and personal crisis. What began as a flippant way of making light of his doubts in the Divine turned into something he wasn't at all prepared for: God wrote back. Since creating the popular "Hey God. Hey John." blog on Facebook three years ago, John has tackled such topics as his journey to mental health wellness, his lack of faith, the joy and pain of raising a child with autism, and grief, all in the form of a simple conversation with "God."Eventually, these conversations transformed straight into poetry that has touched hundreds of thousands of people all around the world. Quote “A best friend is the only one that walks into your life when the world has walked out.” Shannon Alder Welcome to the Sensory Strides podcast. Observations of the world through activity, reading, listening, and everything else. The last two weeks have not been my best. I thought I was coming out of my depression along with the weather getting warmer. Then, I had an interaction with someone that shut me down. I felt belittled and dismissed. I shut down so much that I couldn't even talk with my husband. I needed to shut myself in my room alone for a few hours. It took me a couple of days before I was able to bring down the walls I had built up and interact with others on a more normal basis. Then, a series of smaller interactions kept me from climbing all the way out of the hole I was in. I relied on my different support systems and managed to feel strong enough to have a face-to-face conversation with the person that was most central in the different tensions. We had a great conversation and I feel much more positive going into this next week. It is important to have those crucial conversations when something isn't going the way you would expect, and you aren't sure why. You don't know what is going on in the other person's life that could be affecting them. Just like I am experiencing depression and know I am being more sensitive due to that condition, other people may have similar conditions that you aren't aware of. By talking to them on a personal, non-confrontational way in order to learn how to improve you open the opportunity for those more personal conversations and may learn more of the why from their perspective. It is also important to have support systems with different perspectives. Of course, I have my husband. I also have a very good friend that I rely on who is very analytical and process driven. Additionally I am part of an accountability mastermind group that I meet with every week. While the group mainly helps me with my fitness and activities external to my work environment – like my podcasts and speaking engagements – there is a large trust factor we have built with each other that allows us to share us successes and troubles candidly and know we will receive honest feedback. I am not sure where I would be right now if it weren't for these different people. I hope each of you have similar people that support you. On a positive, the weather has been very warm, my husband has been out working in the fields, and I've made it to the county park to hit the trails twice in the last week. Trails are so much more interesting than walking the same route through town. However, I would rather walk with my husband in town than alone on the trails. Thanks for joining me. Many of us are overburdened with information today. Constantly bombarded with anything and everything going on around us. How will we be able to truly live our lives if we are stuck consuming and muddling through the emotions and thoughts of other things? Today's episode is all about anxiety, a topic close to my heart, my hope is this will help you! As someone who deals with anxiety, and has for most of my life. I've had to learn to cope with my reality, the false reality that begins to form, and the reality I desire. In my experience, anxiety begins to take hold when I am living in a false reality. What do I mean by this?I really mean, my thoughts. Our thoughts can create the reality we are living in whether or not it is true. Our thoughts allow our mind to respond to something as if it is actually taking place.Anxiety is REAL, but it can be manufactured by ourselves. Armed with this knowledge, we can begin to alter and shift our thoughts to counter the approach of a triggering activity. What are triggering activities? These are different for everyone. Our brain has been trained to respond to different situations in different manners. Therefore, we have to be conscious enough to understand how we feel and WHY we feel that way.Anxiety is a secondary emotion, meaning it is a reactionary emotion stemmed from something primaryWe dive into FIVE ways to redirect anxiety and manage it well…Let's talk about how we can help calm our anxiety:1 - Learn to be patient. 2 - Recognize your triggers3 - Take Care of Yourself Physically4 - Be Mindful of What You Are Thinking About5 - Give Yourself GraceAnxiety is not something that has to dictate our lives. Our minds are capable of managing, and Christ can bear all our burdens. Don't forget what the Word says in Philippians present ALL concerns to Christ. No matter how out of sight they may seem. We dive into a story of Paul in Corinthians that sums up how I tend to frame my sessions of depression in a way that gives me TRUTH perspective. Sometimes, the best we can do is lean into the resources we have in our lives. Be that people like counselors, pastors, or loved ones. Giving ourselves boundaries, taking care of ourselves physically, praying and learning patience. If you are walking through the valley of anxiety right now, there is a way out, and I pray you find it. But in the meantime, don't miss what God may have for you right where you are.Share this episode and tag me PLEASE! In this episode of The Thought Vault you are going to hear from Christian author Elizabeth Laing Thompson. We discuss her newest book, All The Feels. Emotional Health is an imperative topic for overall wellness because the results in our lives stem from our reaction to our thoughts and emotions. Therefore, what we think and feel are true dictators to our life perspective and the trajectory of what we are doing. This interview is FIRE, you're going to have GREAT insight and takeaways from it.Highlights of the conversation::You describe three different kinds of feelers: big feelers, steady feelers, and reluctant feelers. Can you briefly explain these feeling types? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Are we allowed to express our real feelings to God in prayer—even when they aren't “righteous”? One thing I love talking about is our ability, God-given, to radically change how we live because of the power of Christ and him dwelling within us and the power of our mindset. I know you speak to this in the book about focusing our thoughts, can you speak on that? You write about trying to build a “happy house”—a home with a positive and open atmosphere where people are comfortable expressing their feelings in healthy ways. What are your best tips on how to create that kind of environment at home? In the book, you talk in chapter 4 about the need for us ( I'm paraphrasing) to recognize how to sit with emotions, process, and then tell them to leave. Can you speak to that, and share How the Bible can help us with painful feelings like anxiety, depression, and grief? Many people, especially big feelers, struggle with borrowing other people's burdens. What are some practical ways to develop emotional boundaries? What piece of advice would you give to someone at the very beginning of that journey? How can a better understanding of our emotions help us to have a more meaningful prayer life? Have richer relationships? Become the people God designed us to be? The message of Elizabeth's book, All the Feels, is very dear to me because I believe in the power of knowing ourselves more, and when it comes to thoughts and feelings, we need to have a deeper understanding of how they intertwine so that we can deepen our relationship with Christ, others, and ourselves. ***TRIGGER WARNING***This is a heavier episode and graphic details of suicide are shared. If you are suffering or recovering from a mood or mental disorder and/or suicide ideation, please listen with caution or choose to not listen at all. The last thing I would want is for hearing these things discussed in this episode to set you back in your healing journey or to trigger negative thoughts and feelings. Also, if you are a bit more sensitive or an empath, you also may want to listen with caution. This episode also contains explicit language. //Anna and Sarah speak about the loss of their brother to suicide and the trauma they experienced afterwards. Through the vulnerability and rawness of their story, they empower and educate others on this sensitive topic. We discuss the grieving and healing process, advocating for mental health, and options to help those struggling. Anna and Sarah hosted a Run for Mental Health event to raise awareness about the affects of suicide and mental illness education. The host, Whytli Rogers, attended the event with her foundation, End The Stigma, hosting a booth and speaker where she was able to connect with the sisters. She was deeply impacted by their story and wanted to bring their voices to her platform. Get ready! Actor and Life Coach Anthony joins the conversation on Cue To Cue! Anthony takes us on a journey today. He is opening up about his journey with anxiety and depression, how it has impacted him in his work as an actor, and how it has ultimately lead to coaching others globally on how to conquer and their own anxiety and how shows others how we don’t have to be a victim of mental illness. In this episode: How to recognize the “aha!” moments in your life How being present and vulnerable is one of the major keys to conquering your anxiety Why seeing yourself as an inspiration is not arrogant. It is imperative for your growth What being a life coach has taught him about emotions and translated into his work as an actor How he has gone from having crippling anxiety and a failed suicide attempt to coaching others in how to overcome their anxiety and depression. How we often believe we are treating anxiety when often times we are actually enabling it. The moment he felt for the first time that he could actually make a go of it as an actor and how that meant he had to abandon the idea that he wasn’t good enough. A little about Anthony: When it comes to anxiety and depression there are many who make the claim that they have some real answers. They often call them-self life coaches, healers, psychologists, mentors and any other number of titles. The shortcoming of many is that they either haven’t experienced anxiety or depression first hand or simply can’t relate and tap into the energy of their clients. Now with a global portfolio of clients, Anthony can be considered the ultimate “life coach”. With real-life testimonials from clients who have gone from homebound, to back out in the real world after just one session! Having the ability to motivate people is one quality that Anthony clearly possesses. But an almost spiritual connection, feeding off energy, is what truly sets him apart. Many say you can’t cure anxiety. And that is often a struggle for people to accept depending where they are at on their own journey. Many people spend years seeing medical professionals and taking various cocktails of medications, with the results being at best, that they are “coping”. While you could say Anthony’s approach is similar to cognitive theory and mindfulness, it is his ability to truly connect with others that sets him apart. He has a large array of videos on YouTube as well as conducts interactive live sessions in the FB group “Anxiety and Depression Support”. His first 1-1 session is always free as well! There is a lot of content that you can access before you even make the decision to pay for his services. After growing rapidly in popularity, Anthony has moved onto larger platforms and is the keynote speaker in many talks across the globe.
