We haven't touched on how to hire an architect or residential designer in quite a while, so here is another look at episode 68 with Jake Krowkoski. In this episode, you will discover…….- How do I know if I need an architect?- Where can I find architects online?- How can I tell which architect will be a good fit for me?- What should I bring to my interview with my architect?About our guestJake Krokowski is a Landscape Architect and Residential Designer based in Greenville SC, and founded JWK DESIGN in 2015 “to help families create their comfortable, modern homes”. He received his Bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture at Cornell University in 1999, followed by a Masters in Construction Management in 2003.Jake started his career in high-end residential work in the New York City area, but also spent years in resort planning & design, working in both San Diego and New York, on projects from Southern California and Baja Mexico to the Mediterranean and Middle East. He then put his construction knowledge to use in rebuilding the World Trade Center and surrounding streetscapes following the 2001 attacks, a project he says he's the most proud to have been involved in.But, following a move to Greenville with his wife Kate in 2012, a sometimes grueling schedule as a traveling construction manager for a hotel developer, coupled with the pending arrival of his first son pushed him to return back to residential design and start his firm in 2015, a move that he says “felt like coming home”. Since then he has added another son to his family, as well as a podcast and a couple YouTube channels!Learn more about Jake Krokowski Website: https://jwk.designYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtIpndhgB4YISmopKTAZHWwInstagram: jwkdesignFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jwkdesign/Houzz: https://www.houzz.com/pro/jwkdesign/jwk-designLinks and mentions from this episodeAIA.orgHouzz.comThanks so much for being with us this week. Many times we think we need to move to an English speaking country to improve our English. After my own experience of studying languages, studying linguistics and my own experience of teaching my students and watching many other friends and clients, I've seen again and again that you do not need to live in the local country to develop your speaking skills. In today's episode I share how you can develop your English speaking skills without living abroad or having many opportunities to speak. I also share some of the biggest mistakes that I have made living abroad and what I have learned teaching clients from all over the world who believed that they needed to move abroad to develop their fluency, and what happens when you are taken out of an English speaking environment. Times to check out: (01:57) This is what happens when I stop trying (06:16) Language learner's number one enemy (8:55) Why comprehension is not enough as a Design Professional (11:00) I could have had a very different experience (15:27) The harsh truth (18:17) What happens when you move back home (21:00) Create the opportunity If you would like more support with communicating your ideas and you'd like to build your confidence in speaking as a non-native English speaker and get support from me, then get your name on The Fluent Club waiting list. It is the last chance to join in 2022 so if you have been considering it, NOW is the time. It won't be opening again until 2023 and the price will be increasing. Don't let not living in an English speaking country or not working for an English speaking company or not having many opportunities to speak or not having English speaking friends be the reason that stops you from making progress. It's not a secret... Every day we are outsourcing more and more of our decisions to AI algorithms. Some of these decisions are frivolous, like determining if that's a cat in the photo. Other decisions are of much higher stake, like whether you will get that medical treatment. Especially with the last kind of decisions, we'd better ensure that these algorithms are designed and used responsibly. And according to Jillian Powers, service design professionals must play a vital role in this process. This means we need to get familiar and comfortable with this new technology. But how? Well, in this episode, Jillian gives a "data science 101" for designers. I assure you that there won't be any complex computer math that you need to understand. On the contrary, you'll hear that bringing the human perspective into the conversation is the thing that's currently missing. This is one of those episodes that shines a light on a blind spot that you didn't even realize you had. So grab your notebook and click the link below! I feel Jillian does a great job at demystifying AI to the point that it might even get you excited to get involved :) Enjoy the conversation and keep making a positive impact! --- [ 1. In this episode, Justin Smith, Principal with Start 2 Rise in Tampa, FL, sits down with us to discuss how he and his colleagues help AEC Design Firm leaders “build stronger Project Management playbooks to focus on growing their people and their business.” Justin has teamed up with Zweig Group to offer a groundbreaking Project Management training program to help PMs be more effective and efficient. The best part about the PM Training that Justin has created is that it was designed and delivered by actual AEC Professionals. Justin worked for more than a decade as a Structural Engineer, and he knows the project management challenges that firms face all too well. The PM Training focuses on four key areas: Time Management Communication - Ability to Understand and Be Understood Leadership Problem Solving & Conflict Resolution The question that Justin focuses on with AEC Leaders dealing with project management challenges is, “where are you now, and where do you want to go?” According to Justin, for us to have a successful outcome with PM Training, we have to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge our shortcomings so that they can be repaired, built up, and fortified. There has never been a better time to professionally and personally develop your team. Starting with a foundational approach to project management will help you chart a path to project success for your firm and your clients. Justin shares so many nuggets of wisdom in this episode. You will have plenty of notes and inspiration to move forward with. Job site related claims, including delay and bodily injury claims against design professionals, is a significant risk for every design firm. Understanding the role of the design professional in Construction Administration (CA) is critical when it comes to effectively managing this risk. In this podcast Dan and guest Jeff Coleman discuss the pitfalls and opportunities design firms face when it comes to construction administration.
We asked our previous guest, Kia Weatherspoon (episode 35 - May 3, 2021), for an intro to someone she'd want to hear from – The first name on her list: Jessica Caldwell.Jessica Caldwell is the founder of Folke Creative in Brooklyn NY, a boutique branding and design studio inspired by the stories of people, places, and things. She also runs the design blog: Design is Lit.Today, Jessica will let us in on her "messy" process of design and also provides some wise advice on how to conjure creativity. She starts her interview reflecting on a moment that eventually leads to a simple and beautiful statement from her: “Life is filled with little luxuries, little glimmers of hope and love… if you'll only just look for them." An alle weiteren Köpfe hinter dem DDP, also u.a. Kim Lauenroth, David Gilbert und Stan Bühne: wenn ihr wichtige Dinge ergänzen möchtet, seid ihr herzlich eingeladen, die Kommentare unter diesem Post zu nutzen oder - noch besser - selbst als Gast zum Outdoor Interview zu kommen... solange es das Wetter noch zulässt. Fühlt euch eingeladen!

Jake Krokowski joins me again for an episode on how to find the right design professional for your project. Jake is a landscape architect and residential designer from South Carolina. In this episode, you will discover……. - How do I know if I need an architect? - Where can I find architects online? - How can I tell which architect will be a good fit for me? - What should I bring to my interview with my architect? About our guest Jake Krokowski is a Landscape Architect and Residential Designer based in Greenville SC, and founded JWK DESIGN in 2015 “to help families create their comfortable, modern homes”. He received his Bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture at Cornell University in 1999, followed by a Masters in Construction Management in 2003. Jake started his career in high-end residential work in the New York City area, but also spent years in resort planning & design, working in both San Diego and New York, on projects from Southern California and Baja Mexico to the Mediterranean and Middle East. He then put his construction knowledge to use in rebuilding the World Trade Center and surrounding streetscapes following the 2001 attacks, a project he says he's the most proud to have been involved in. But, following a move to Greenville with his wife Kate in 2012, a sometimes grueling schedule as a traveling construction manager for a hotel developer, coupled with the pending arrival of his first son pushed him to return back to residential design and start his firm in 2015, a move that he says “felt like coming home”. Since then he has added another son to his family, as well as a podcast and a couple YouTube channels!
