In the fourth episode of the 4 Es series, Julia is joined by Sunita, whose experience spans across continents in the field of renewable energy. Leading in different contexts has taught her how to combine seemingly opposite ideas and the one she holds closest is her ability to balance humility with assertiveness. Every new context offers and opportunity to unlearn and re-learn, she say, for the pace, the language and the mode of working may change. This is where humility is necessary. At the same time, it is important to be confident and assertive when it comes to your subject matter. Sunita offers a range of tools and phrases she keeps handy when working with the various kinds of energy one encounters when leading a team. How can you learn to be empathetic but also have clear boundaries? How do you learn to run a successful and healthy team in vastly different context?About the Guest: Sunita Dubey is the Country Representative for the GEAPP in Vietnam and leads battery energy storage system work in the region. She has 25+ years of combined experience in the energy sector in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa. She has double master's in environmental science and energy policy and is a Chevening fellow.

President Macky Sall of Senegal is facing mounting pressure after the decision to postpone the scheduled 25 February presidential election to December. The opposition says the move is a “constitutional coup” but the president says more time is needed to resolve a dispute over who is eligible to stand as a presidential candidate after several opposition contenders were barred. Last week, three people were killed and hundreds arrested in protests against the delay of the election. Senegal has long been seen as one of the most stable democracies in West Africa. It is the only country in mainland West Africa that has never had a military coup. It has had three largely peaceful handovers of power and never delayed a presidential election. But is that about to change? And what will the consequences of any political, social and economic turmoil for a country with a young population? This weeks episode is the recording of a panel discussion on Ukrainian organiations access to international funding. The discussion was held on 14 March 2023 with the title: Small fish in a big pond: Ukrainian organisations' (lack of) access to international funding. The panel is a co-production by HERE Geneva and Trumanitairan.Val Hambye-Verbrugghen from HERE-Geneva moderated the discussion between the three panellists:Yuliia Chykolba the co-host of the Trumanitarian podcast series on Ukraine. Yuliia was born in Dnipro, Ukraine and first became involved with humanitarian action when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014. And has since then worked with humanitarian mine action in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. Yulia is a Chevening scholar and an alumna of the Department of War studies from King's College London. Marco Rotelli, who is the former UN deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, although Marco is speaking in his personal capacity at today's event. Prior to this role in Ukraine, Marco served as representative for Africa of the global NGO network ICVA, and in operations with NGOs and the UN in most of the major humanitarian crises since the early 2000s. Robert Serry, who is the former first ambassador of the Netherlands to Ukraine, and chairman of the foundation opendoorukraine.nl, who are currently actively involved in humanitarian early reconstruction activities in Ukraine. He has past experience in international crisis management, and sorry, is an international crisis management expert who has served in senior positions both with with NATO and the UN.The panel explored the following questions:1. What has been your experience of Ukrainian NGOs benefiting from the promptness and generosity of the international funding response? What have been enablers or obstacles to their access to funding? To what extent are the rules and bureaucracy in place at the international level suited to fund informal/volunteer initiatives?2. What needs to be done to ensure a better connection between traditional agencies' efforts and those of local volunteer groups in this crisis?3. How has the funding volume impacted the relationship between national and local NGOs and international actors? How complementary are they?4. An additional cut of the funding has gone to support States that neighbour Ukraine: what are the perceptions around this by different actors (local and national NGOs on either side of the border, coordination mechanisms, contributors to appeals such as those mentioned above)?5. Is there a moral obligation to stop collecting funds in scenarios such as these, where the amount raised is enormous?

Anjal Niraula on Nepal's Solar Revolution and the Future of Clean Energy

PODS by PEI

With the rapid de-escalation of the cost of solar PV technologies, and the conversations surrounding climate change, coupled with research suggesting climate change will indeed have an adverse impact on the flow, hydrology, and therefore, the overall electricity generation output of Nepali rivers, discussions about the uptake of other-than-hydro renewables have started to pick up momentum. To further complement Nepal's renewable energy potential, by 2030, Nepal has set an ambitious target to expand clean energy generation from approximately 1,400 MW to 15,000 MW, of which 5-10% (70 MW to 1500 MW) will be generated from mini and micro-hydro power, solar, wind and bio-energy. Of this, 5,000 MW is an unconditional target. The remainder is dependent upon the provision of funding by the international community. By 2030, ensure 15% of the total energy demand is supplied from clean energy sources. In today's episode, PEI's Saurab Lama sits with Anjal Niraula, the Chief Executive Officer of Gham Power, a renewable-energy-focused social enterprise based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Anjal is an off-grid solar expert, and he oversees Gham Power's R&D and product strategy – including business development, design, and engineering. His focus is on developing solar microgrids along with productive end-use loads. Anjal was a Chevening scholar at the University of Edinburgh where he studied Energy Systems. He is also a member of the Future Energy Leaders group with the World Energy Council where he works on the Energy Access task force. Saurab and Anjal discuss Nepal's solar industry and its feasibility in Nepal, where Anjal makes a case for a higher uptake of solar electricity within a hydroelectricity-dominated electricity sector. The two discuss the global solar uptake patterns and why Nepal's uptake has not followed similar trends and Nepal's own set renewable energy targets set through its Nationally Determined Contributions. They also discuss some important policy-level issues, including the role of governmental institutions, and the private sector, and evaluate their performance in promoting renewable energy sources. They end the discussion with some technical solutions, including the importance of battery technology and some recommendations for the future of solar energy within the country. 016: Childhood Obesity – With Dr. Judwin Ndzo

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) –  in 2019,  reports showed that 38.2 million children under the age of 5 years were estimated to be overweight or obese. Once considered a high-income country problem, overweight and obesity are now on the rise in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings. In Africa, the number of overweight children under 5 has increased by nearly 24% since 2000.  What makes this worse is the fact that most African countries have this mindset that being overweight has been associated with richness, health, strength, and fertility, whereas in the Western world, the slim body size is widely idealized. So children and teens with obesity are considered nourished and nice hence their obesity is less diagnosed. Today, we have with us Dr. Judwin Ndzo to share her experience as a pediatrician who deals with cases of child obesity on a daily basis. This episode is focused on the causes of child obesity, myths surrounding child obesity, and preventive measures we can put in place to ensure our children don't become obese. We also discussed the impact obesity has on children's mental health. I hope you learn and pick some key points from this episode – remember to share this episode and the lessons learned with your circles.   Meet Our Guest : Dr. Ndzo is a UK-based pediatrician who is passionate about helping children grow, thrive, and achieve their maximal potential in life. Early in her career, after graduating from the University of Buea, Cameroon, she worked at Solidarity Clinic in Buea, where she developed a passion for managing children. Her interest in nutrition led her to her job with MSF Swiss and later the French Red Cross in Garoua-boulaï, Eastern Cameroon where she worked in a refugee camp for almost 2 years, looking after malnourished kids. Following this, she won a Chevening scholarship to study for a master's in Public Health Nutrition at the University of Southampton, UK. The following year, she decided to start her residency in Paediatrics and became a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2021. She is keen to mentor and help other young Cameroonians pursue their career goals.  When not working, she enjoys traveling, working out, hiking, cooking, socializing, and hanging out with friends!   Contact Our Guest: Instagram: @aliehjudwin Linkedin:   https://www.linkedin.com/in/judwin-ndzo-16317b70   Things You Will Learn in This Episode:  [00:01 – 03:00] Introduction Getting to know our guest [03:00 – 15:00] Understanding Childhood Obesity What is childhood obesity? Understanding BMI & Growth Charts Obesity in Africa & risk factors Demographical data on obesity The impact of obesity on children's health [15:00 – 30:00] Mental Health of Obese Children & Myths of Obesity Mental health issues children face due to obesity The effects of bullying on obese children Myths surrounding obesity in Africa  The importance of eating healthy diets [30:00 – 42:00] Advise, Recommendations & Ways Out of Obesity Prioritizing breastfeeding and proper weaning Practice exercising and healthy meal habits in the family Advice to the teens facing obesity The importance of being sensitive when addressing obesity Being a good example and positive role model for our children Importance of family therapy and creating safe spaces for discussions around obesity [42:00 – 46:55] Final Words Dr. Ndzo's final words Anyoh's final words   Quotes “Yes, the most important thing is that babies eventually have food. But it's important to talk about the importance of breastfeeding. So we know that babies who are bottle-fed are much more likely to develop obesity in the future and alongside diabetes and or whatnot.” – Dr. Judwin Ndzo   “I see children with diabetes, with hypertension, with low self-esteem, all those things. It really bothers me to see obese children suffer such health problems, especially at such a young age and I think we need to start with the adults, we are we need to be role models to our children. Let's have healthy families because healthy families would lead to healthier communities.” – Dr. Judwin Ndzo   “I see a lot of Cameroonian men who are obese and some of them don't even realize that until they get diagnosed maybe with hypertension and diabetes, and then they start making an effort to want to lose weight. So I think we need to start by looking at our own selves as adults. We cannot be telling a child, you're obese and things when yourself you've not started with yourself.” – Dr. Judwin Ndzo   “So do that BMI test, look at a BMI chart, calculate your BMI, you can literally do it at home, measure your child's height and measure your child's weight. I think anything over 25 is overweight and then obese or morbidly obese. So if your child is falling within that range, then have an honest conversation with them. And you don't necessarily have to be condescending, but just try to see things that you can start by changing in the household. And also having that conversation with them.” – Anyoh Fombad   LEAVE A REVIEW and tell us what you think about the episode so we can continue putting out the best content just for you! Reverse-engineering his imagined past, Israeli author Yaniv Iczkovits follows his characters across the Pale of Settlement. The Slaughterman's Daughter, finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. With her reputation as a vilde chaya (wild animal), Fanny Keismann isn't like the other women in her shtetl in the Pale of Settlement—certainly not her obedient and anxiety-ridden sister, Mende, whose “philosopher” of a husband, Zvi-Meir, has run off to Minsk, abandoning her and their two children. As a young girl, Fanny felt an inexorable pull toward her father's profession of ritual slaughterer and, under his reluctant guidance, became a master with a knife. And though she long ago gave up that unsuitable profession—she's now the wife of a cheesemaker and a mother of five—Fanny still keeps the knife tied to her right leg. Which might come in handy when, heedless of the dangers facing a Jewish woman traveling alone in czarist Russia, she sets off to track down Zvi-Meir and bring him home, with the help of the mute and mysterious ferryman Zizek Breshov, an ex-soldier with his own sensational past. Yaniv Iczkovits spins a family drama into a far-reaching comedy of errors that will pit the czar's army against the Russian secret police and threaten the very foundations of the Russian Empire. The Slaughterman's Daughter is a rollicking and unforgettable work of fiction. Yaniv Iczkovits, born in 1975, is an award-winning author and screen writer. He has published four novels and one novella, and is now working on developing TV content based on his novels for Keshet and KI, Yes Studios, Endemol Shine and more. His books include Pulse (Hakibbutz HaMeuchad), which won Haaretz's debut novel prize and was translated into Italian; Adam and Sophie (HaSifriya HaHadasha), which won the Prime Minister's Prize for Hebrew Writers; Laws of Succession, a novella published in the anthology “There's a Story Behind the Money” (Achuzat Bayit). His third novel, The Slaughterman's Daughter, was published by Keter in August 2015 and is translated into 15 languages worldwide. The book was awarded the Agnon Prize – in honor of Israel's only Nobel Laureate for Literature – the first time the prize has been granted in ten years (2016). Iczkovits won the Ramat Gan Prize (2017) for literary excellence and the People of the Book Foundation Prize (2017), and the British Wingate prize (2021). The Economist and The Sunday Times chose the book as one of the best books published in Britain in 2020, and The New York Times and Kirkus chose the book as one of the best books to look forward to in 2021 in the U.S. In January 2022 the book was announced as a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. In August 2020 Iczkovits published his recent book, Nobody Leaves Palo Alto (Keter) which immediately became a no.1 best seller in Israel and won critical acclaim. Iczkovits studied at the Adi Lautman Interdisciplinary Program for Outstanding Students at Tel Aviv University, and during his Master's degree he spent a year at Oxford University as a Chevening scholar from the British Council. His doctoral dissertation dealt with Ludwig Wittgenstein's thought and analyzed the interplay between ethics and language. He taught for eight years at the University of Tel Aviv, and After receiving his Ph.D., he went on to pursue postdoctoral research at Columbia University in New York, where he adapted his doctoral dissertation into the book Wittgenstein's Ethical Thought (Palgrave Macmillan 2012). He currently lives in Tel Aviv with his wife and three daughters. (Photo by: Eric Sultan)

You will need to select three different master's courses. These can be three different courses at the same institution or three similar courses at up to three different universities. Chevening recommends selecting three similar courses at three different universities to increase the likelihood that you will gain entry into one of them. Please note that the course titles do not have to match exactly, but all three courses should be similar in content. You should select courses that reflect your current or future career goals. Eligible courses In order to be eligible, the courses you choose must be full-time, and: Start in the autumn term (usually September/October) Taught master's (i.e. not research-focused MRes programmes) Lead to a master's degree qualification Based in the UK Courses cannot be: Part-time Distance learning Less than nine months in duration More than 12 months in duration PhD or DPhil Taught with more than one month of study outside the UK The Secretariat will need to see evidence of an unconditional offer from one of your three-course choices in order to finalise your Chevening Scholarship. You are not permitted to meet a university's English language requirement by enrolling in, signing up for, or paying a fee for a pre-sessional English course. Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer-term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. Strengths: Outline of specific, concrete goals, which usually, therefore, seemed more convincing and achievable. Weaknesses: Applicants did not give a strong rationale, which made a potential clear career path unconvincing. Many applicants illustrated a desire to do a PhD in the post-study section. This is ambitious and realistic but wasn't always a convincing career goal on its own. List reasons why you want to pursue research work and how it plays a part in their longer-term ambitions. Career plans were too often poorly developed and it was not possible to discern how a Chevening Scholarship would be of benefit. Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form Strengths: A clear focus on study outcomes with evidence of research at the institution and course level. Having distinct paragraphs discussing their courses. Weaknesses: Not specifying their chosen universities or demonstrate an awareness of key details from within their fields. Applying for three very diverse course subjects did not inspire confidence in their research into courses and were frequently unable to give clear and coherent reasons for these choices. Cut-and-paste from university promotional material rather than real engagement with subject or course detail. Chevening uses independent Reading Committees to assess all eligible applications and these are some of the mistakes they noted in the networking essay Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. Link to Youtube Video I mention in teh podcast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73jTnJzP7jw&t=4s Strengths: Strong applicants use specific examples of their own networks, describing unique and diverse ways of maintaining networks, and discussed how they facilitate networking. Weaknesses: Could clearly evidence networking skills but few expanded on this. Merely joining a social media network is not the strongest example of relationship-building skills; go to specific detail on how and why creating and joining these networks had proved beneficial. Not connecting their networking with clear examples of using them at work - directly and indirectly with colleagues Not expanding how these relationships would help the individual in the future. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cynthiakimola/support

The question usually is: Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer. STRENGTHS OF THE BEST ESSAYS: Demonstrated clear examples of leadership and influencing with concrete results. MISTAKES CANDIDATES MAKE ON THEIR LEADERSHIP ESSAY Don't combine successful leadership qualities with evidence. Not giving recent or current professional leadership examples Assuming their position or role was in itself demonstrates leadership skills. The most common error - define leadership rather than provide examples of their traits General recommendations: Use the STAR (situation, task, action, result) approach when writing teh essays. Avoid “we” and “team” in this answer and place greater emphasis on their individual contribution, to achieve a higher score.
